BY KIA FARHANG mfarhang@mndaily.com

Summer constr uction on new apar tments in the Marcy-Holmes neighbor-

hood is forcing some current tenants to move out earlier than expected. Several residents living on 15th Avenue in MarcyHolmes will have to move out to make way for new apar tment buildings built by Dinkytown Rentals and CPM Proper ty Management.

While some tenants have said they were told about moving out months ago, others said they were given little notice. Owners of both Dinkytown Rentals and CPM said they’re of fering alternative housing for displaced tenants. Psychology senior

Max Zimbel said one of his roommates got a call in early May letting her know they had 60 days to vacate their house on 15th Avenue between Seventh and Eighth Street streets u See MOVE-OUT Page 7 Construction is set to begin on the new apartments this summer.

Failed bonding bill delays U renovations The bill included about $110 million in University funding. BY CODY NELSON cnelson@mndaily.com

The r enovation and reconstruction of several University of Minnesota buildings will have to wait another year after funding was cut late in the legislative session. A bonding bill that included almost $110 million for the University failed days before legislators adjour ned, leaving projects across campus unfunded and some at the school disappointed. Though legislators don’t often pass larger bonding bills, which fund public works projects, in odd-numbered years, some indicated they

would take advantage of the year’s low-interest rates and fund more projects, said University Chief Financial Of ficer Richard Pfutzenreuter. But the original bill failed to get the votes needed to pass, and buildings like the Bell Museum of Natural Histor y and Tate Laborator y of Physics will remain the same a year longer. The bill also allocated $35 million for upkeep and renovation of University buildings. A smaller bonding bill was later passed but funded mostly renovations to RELATED CONTENT See more, as well as a list of bills passed this year that could affect students u See Page 4

Chris Cramer didn’t sleep much last semester. The chemistr y professor and four other University of Minnesota professors are volunteering hundreds of hours to teach free massive open online courses this summer. MOOCs are open to an unlimited

number of people from anywhere in the world who have access to the Internet, and the University’s MOOCs have drawn anywhere from about 8,000 to more than 16,000 students so far. “I’ve probably put 400 hours into preparation,” said Cramer, whose course started May 20. “That’s a lot of time.” Cramer isn’t the only one logging long hours on his MOOC. A University of Minnesota student was killed last week in a motorcycle accident, authorities announced Tuesday. Patrick Buxbaum, 30, was on his motorcycle at the intersection of 27th Street and Emerson Avenue when he rode into the rear driver-side of a limousine headed south on Emerson, according to Minneapolis police Sgt. William Palmer. The accident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. on May 19, just blocks away from his Minneapolis home, according to the Hennepin

Danita Brown is busy. She’s planning a June wedding, moving to a new state and prepping to be the University of Minnesota’s new vice provost for student affairs and dean of students. After a five-month search, she’ll step into the position July 31, taking over for Jerr y Rinehar t, who began his retirement in April after seven years in the position and 35 at the University. Brown’s experience in student affairs and her references made her a “persuasive” choice for the position, said Senior Vice

President for Academic Affairs and Provost Karen Hanson. “She was uniformly described as somebody who was a charismatic and caring student affairs leader who had great relationships with the students [and] with her staff,” she said. The vice provost for student affairs and dean of students oversees a “huge portfolio” of activity at the University, Hanson said, including the Department of Recreational Sports, Boynton Health Service and Student Unions and Activities. More broadly, the dean of students is responsible for ensuring student success outside of the University’s academic mission, which is still crucial for academic u See PROVOST Page 7 Brown hopes to increase greek enrollment at the University.

Authorities have yet to reveal the circumstances leading up to the crash but said Buxbaum was found dead at the scene of the crash. Buxbaum was not wearing a helmet, Palmer said. Buxbaum, who was originally from Sidney, Mont., was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and had served overseas in Japan. After four years in the militar y, Buxbaum moved to Minneapolis to attend Minneapolis Community and Technical College, later transferring to the University. Minneapolis police and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner are continuing their investigations.

Local four-star basketball recruit Reid Travis places an added emphasis on relationships when looking at his college options. “That’s one of the biggest things for me,” said Travis, a junior at DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis. “You want to build a relationship with the staff because that’s who you’re going to be with for four years and that’s who’s going to be guiding you.” For a new Gophers basketball staff hoping to lure the 2014 recruit, one relationship has proven vital. Gophers assistant coach Ben Johnson also played high school basketball at DeLaSalle. He led the Islanders to state titles in 1998 and 1999.
