Another Successful Season –Willie Boland
Academies and Merrion Kickers
Wehave had increased numbers for our Saturday morning Academies in Colaiste Eoin which also includes Merrion kickers, which is for 3 to 4-yearolds to prepare them for the Academy. These Academies are also run by some of our young coaches to encourage them into the coaching and for them to also develop. We have an u7 team for the second half of the season.
This is the first steppingstone for all involved to be introduced to 5-a-side football within the club at U8s.
Teams
We have 48 underage boys’ teams that play across Saturday and Sunday ranging from U7 to U18. We also have 4 senior teams that compete in the Leinster Senior League and the LFL. On the girls’ side we have 16 teams that compete on Sundays.
Overall, we have 68 teams in the club with over 1,000 players along with close to 200 volunteers helping out with the clubs. We also have three LOI teams – An U13 Development squad to prepare the players for LOI football as well as an U14 and U15 LOI squad that represents UCD/MMYFC in the National League.
Schools Programe
Each week I go into local schools to take some football sessions during
and after school to promote the club. This year I have been in 5 different schools including Oatlands, Mount Anville, SST Mount Merrion, Our Lady’s Grove and St Raphaelas.
Goalkeeper Sessions
We provided GK sessions every Thursday night which catered for goalkeepers from u11 to Senior within the club.
Coach the Coach Sessions
This season we provided Coach the Coach sessions for 5v5, 7v7, 9v9 and 11v11 teams within our club. We also introduced the Coaching Manual to our coaches to help with planning for their sessions and being able to have plenty of resources to explore.
Players
We have had players from both the boys and girls section attend ddsl representative training and games from age groups U12 to U15. In total 9 players from our club spent the season with their squads. We have also had a player picked to represent the ddsl at the Kennedy cup this June. From our u13 Premier squad, 7 players will progress to our LOI
development squad once the season finishes. This brings the total players to progress from Mount Merrion to the UCD LOI teams to 30 in the last 5 years. We have had 3 players who came through the academy make their first team debut for UCD, 2 of those players being just 16. We also have had three players pick up international caps at u18 and U16 levels.
Honours
U14 Girls – Cup Winners
Congratulations to our U121 boys, U15-1 Boys and U14 girls for winning their cup finals out in the AUL in May. Also well done to our U12 prem who reached the National cup semi finals before losing to eventual winners Shamrock Rovers. Our U15-1 Sunday side reached their second National final in two years where they played Cherry Orchard.
Final Note
A final note to say thank you to all the players for their commitment, effort
and application each week at training and games – to the managers for their unbelievable commitment and enthusiasm to help improve our players – to
coaches for supporting the managers and volunteering their free time every week –to committee members for their continued support in striving to improve the club at every level and of course the parents for supporting and encouraging their children when representing the club. I hope everyone enjoys the experience of the Mini World Cup and once again thank you all for your efforts for this season.

U15 UCD/MMYFC
Our UCD/MMYFC U15 team have started their season well, recently completing the LOI first phase where they have played 10 games as part of 'Group A'. In a very tough group consisting of Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians, Bray Wanderers, Klub Kildare and Wexford, the boys have amassed 5 wins, scoring 22 goals in the process, all while playing an entertaining brand of football. The most notable scalp came as a 4-2 win at home
against Bohemians, where we raced into a 4-0 lead after 65 minutes only for Bohs to score a couple of very late consolations. James Loughnane leads to scoring charts for the boys, with 8 goals in his 9 appearances. Narrowly missing out on this year's elite phase, the lads will now be looking forward to both the cup & shield campaigns getting underway in the coming weeks. As always, you can keep up to date with our LOI U15's through the FAI Connect App and the fantastic UCD/MMYFC social media pages.

MOUNT MERRION F.C. Player Pathways
THE CLUB PHILOSOPHY
The club objective is to play football at the highest level possible, across every age group & across every league entered in to. The club will achieve this by utilising a style of football that is attacking & skilful in its nature. The club will continually endeavour to facilitate matching player’s talent with the appropriate level of challenge & participation.
A player centred approach will be employed by all coaches & managers. There will be a focus on performance & development rather than results. Players will be encouraged to make their own footballing decisions in an effort to increase learning. The club also recognises that fun & social inclusion is important for all teams regardless of league or ability.
LONG TERM PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY
Active Start Stage – Ages: 2, 3 & 4
Soccer contributes to the well-being of children by engaging them in the sport, while teaching them basic movement skills. At this introductory level, the objective is to get moving, keep active & have fun, in a safe, low pressure, positive learning environment.
Fundamentals Stage –Ages: 5, 6, 7 & 8
At this stage, individual player development is paramount. Players at this stage are totally self-centred & the primary focus should be on individual, technical ball mastery. Coaches should create a stimulating learning environment where the atmosphere is one of freedom and fun.” A “positive coaching” philosophy is vital at this stage.
Learning to train stage –Ages: 9, 10 & 11
The effect of the role-model is very important at this stage. Children begin to identify with famous players and successful teams, and they want to learn imaginative skills. Skill demonstration is very important, and the players learn best by “doing.”
Training to train stage – Ages: 12 & 13
Awareness of tactics within the game becomes an important facet of the learning process. Players tend to be self-critical and begin to question more, but they are also beginning to form a strong commitment to the team.
Training to compete stage –Ages: 14 & 15
Athletes who are now proficient at performing basic and soccer-specific skills are working to gain more game maturity as they learn to perform these skills under a variety of competitive conditions. Players must have a sound understanding of the game principles and concepts.
Training
to win stage – Ages: 16+
The majority of the player’s social, physical, technical, tactical, and psychological qualities are now fully established, and the focus of training has shifted to optimisation of performance. The focus at this stage is on the maximisation of all capacities, in an effort to produce good people as well as good footballers.
Active for life: Retention & Recruitment stage – Ages: All
The recruitment and retention of players, coaches, referees and administrators is key to the ongoing development & long term future of Mount Merrion Youth F. C.
