CAMPAIGN FOR NATIONAL RESEARCH UNIVERSITY Texas State University — Our Legacy

A Vision for the Future of TXST

Texas State University offers an outstanding educational experience through nine academic colleges, 200 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degree programs, and hundreds of student activities and programs to better prepare its graduates for fulfilling careers, leadership positions, and civic engagement. It has evolved over its 125-year history to become a leading university in the Southwest and to prepare students for successful careers in multiple areas. Our legacy as a school devoted to preparing new teachers remains with us today as a commitment to applied research that changes the world.

Like Texas, our university is growing. We have added students and degree programs, built state-of- the-art facilities, and raised our research profile. Texas State University is a national research university on the path to achieving the R1 Carnegie classification. The process will include earning access to the state’s National Research University Fund. TXST has already surpassed the research expenditure metric with $110 million in research expenditures in 2022, which is comparable to other Carnegie R1 institutions in the country.

As the university’s student population has grown — from 303 in 1903 to over 38,000 in 2023 — our San Marcos and Round Rock campuses have also expanded. Today, Texas State consists of a 491-acre San Marcos campus, a 101-acre Round Rock campus, and about 4,000 additional acres in academic, agricultural, research, and recreational areas. While more than 95 percent of our students are from Texas and represent the rich history and diversity of our state, students come from every state and 75 countries around the globe. As we become a National Research University, Texas State offers opportunities for discovery, collaboration, and innovation to faculty, students, and companies throughout the region. The university’s faculty are engaged in research and development totaling more than $110 million in annual expenditures.

Our athletic programs continue to compete in regional and national arenas. We have a strategic plan that entails investments in the people that are driving the university’s growth — students, faculty, researchers, scientists, authors, and scholars. Specifically, Texas State has identified funding priorities to ensure a continued legacy of excellence. These priorities define the Texas State of the future and are within our reach with the support of Bobcat alumni and our friends.

 We are on a thousand-mile journey in the pursuit of Hopes & Aspirations High. So far we’ve trekked about six miles. We’ve already made tremendous progress toward our goals and have taken bold steps to bring our vision to life.” - PRESIDENT KELLY DAMPHOUSSE

A FOCUSED VISION FOR THE FUTURE Our Vision for the Future of TXST is driven by our Run to R1 and Elevate Student Success goals that define our NEXT IS NOW campaign priorities: • Provide more students entry to college, strengthen our research capabilities and teaching support with increased Ph.D. graduates and expansion of the Round Rock Campus. • Provide more student success and leadership programs that help our students grow academically and personally and make our graduates more competitive in the job market. • Elevate our football program and renovate the Football Performance Center to enhance our overall student-athlete experience to put us on par with our peers in the state of Texas and nationally. • Fund construction and renovation of campus facilities, like the new music building, to match the caliber of students and faculty we are recruiting.

RUN TO R1 Texas State aims to become a nationally recognized research university within the next decade and to do so it must continue to accelerate our Run2 R1 by enhancing scholastic achievement, boosting faculty reputation, increasing Ph.D. graduates and post-docs, and increasing research productivity. To help further our R2 R1 and position Texas State on the national stage, we need: Academic Scholarships: Scholarships provide financial resources for ambitious, hard-working students to support them in pursuing their dreams and completing their degree. Academic Programs: To keep up with Texas’ evolving workforce, the state must produce a greater number of qualified workers in key areas, including the health professions, education, computer science and engineering, which are driving innovation in business and technology. We choose the direction of degree programs based on Texas Workforce data and input from our industry partners and advisors. We are constantly adding new degree programs, tailored specifically to meet workforce demand. Funds to support excellence in teaching and research help our students and our state’s economy. TXST Round Rock: Projected population growth in Austin demands that we expand TXST Round Rock to provide affordable, high-quality, and convenient higher education access to tens of thousands of additional future students. Ph.D. Graduates and Post-Docs: Run to R1 investment in research assistantships and tuition scholarships will support more Ph.D. graduates and post-docs to allow for devoted concentration on research.    Professorships: To recruit and retain distinguished, student-centered faculty, the university seeks funding for endowed professorships. These positions enable talented faculty to pursue research that addresses crucial issues in such areas as water conservation, nanotechnology, and forensic anthropology. Chairs: Endowed faculty chairs are special academic appointments that are vital in recruiting distinguished faculty who will lead the university in advancing its reputation nationally and internationally.

STAR PARK

To help fuel the economic development of Texas, the university operates the Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Park, a 58-acre complex focused on innovations in materials and life sciences, engineering, and computer information technologies. STAR Park is expanding. A second building will be added to the facility to serve as a technology incubator/accelerator for start-up and early-stage research. Over $411K has been raised for STAR Park since the launch of the campaign.

Shared Values In pursuing our mission, we, the faculty, staff, and students of Texas State University, are guided by a shared collection of values: • Teaching and learning based on research, student involvement, and the free exchange of ideas in a supportive environment; • Research and creative activities that encompass the full range of academic disciplines—research with relevance, from the sciences to the arts, from the theoretical to the applied; • The cultivation of character, integrity, honesty, civility, compassion, fairness, respect, and ethical behavior in all members of our university community; • A diversity of people and ideas, a spirit of inclusiveness, a global perspective, and a sense of community as essential conditions for campus life; • A commitment to service and leadership for the public good; • Responsible stewardship of our resources and environment; and

ELEVATE STUDENT SUCCESS Texas State is a big university with a small school feel. Our students’ growth — academically and personally — is the priority in all we do. Students need support to meet the expectations of a rigorous academic environment. TXST strives to provide conditions that support all Bobcats who are committed to their academic pursuits to ultimately walk across the graduation stage! Our faculty and staff must remain intentional across all student support programs and services to impact student success outcomes. To create the synergy to do even more and achieve profound, institutional-level transformation, we have created a new Division of Student Success to better coordinate the delivery of student success initiatives to support our student success goals. To give students the tools they need to make their mark on the world, areas in need of support include: Student Success Initiatives: We have the fifth-highest graduation rate among the 38 public four-year universities in Texas. Support for campus speakers, internships, study abroad, 350+ student organizations, entrepreneurship programs, service-learning and intramural sports give students enriching experiences and build a strong campus community that is essential to ensuring students thrive at Texas State. Leadership: Programs that help shape future leaders require greater funding. Programs such as The Leadership Institute, LeaderShape-Texas State and the Emerging Leaders Retreat, instill integrity; promote ethical behavior, inclusiveness, and social responsibility; and teach values-based decision-making skills. Career Development: Funding is needed to enable students to experience learning opportunities on and off campus, including alumni networking activities and on-campus events with corporate and industry leaders. Such events help prepare students for success in the world beyond college.

• Continued reflection and evaluation to ensure that our strengths as a community always benefit those we serve.

SUPPORTING COMPETITIVE TEAMS More than 400 talented, passionate, dedicated Texas State student- athletes demonstrate outstanding accomplishments both on the field and in the classroom. Texas State seeks to elevate student success by raising funds to better support our student-athletes who compete in a range of sports in the Sun Belt Conference. Our NEXT is NOW campaign is seeking private dollars to support these Athletics priorities: Student-Athlete Scholarships: Endowed scholarships provide a permanent source of funding for top student-athletes and demonstrate alumni support for our teams. Athletic Programs: TXST has 16 NCAA men’s and women’s Division I teams. Building a strong athletic enterprise requires support for student-athletes, such as academic advising, nutrition, training, and airconditioning. Athletic Facilities: Division 1-caliber facilities are essential to enable our students to compete at the highest level. Our top priority is to renovate, enhance and expand the south End Zone Complex for our football program.

BUILDING WORLD-CLASS FACILITIES FOR STUDENT LEARNING While the university has made significant progress in building new facilities, as we Run to R1 Texas State remains critically short of space to address projected student enrollments and build new academic programs. What’s NEXT for TXST includes these cutting-edge facilities: New Music Building: A 21st-century state-of-the-art facility consolidating musical activities into one building, providing a collaborative learning environment to match our nationally recognized artistic and educational reputation and reflect the caliber of our students and faculty. Renovations to Meadows Center: Renovations to Spring Lake Hall at the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment to better share the practice and science of conservation with the world.

04

South Endzone Complex: Renovation of the South End Zone Complex with expanded practice and training facilities to better equip our student-athletes so that they may reach their full potential. STAR Park: Funding will support the construction of a stateof-the-art research lab at STAR Park that will provide structural testing for concrete beams, materials, and other technologies. The Connected Infrastructure for Education and Demonstration of Applied Research (CIEDAR) lab is a new research strategy for Texas State. The facilities being built under CIEDAR will have embedded smart technology, including smart floors and smart walls. A second building will also be added to STAR Park to serve as a technology incubator and accelerator for start-up and early-stage businesses involved in research on campus.

 As we accelerate our progress toward becoming

an R1 institution, we will stay true to Texas State’s long-standing commitment to teaching, studentcenteredness, and student success. In fact, when done right, becoming an R1 institution will honor this rich history and preserve this unique identity. Teaching and research are two sides of the same academic coin. Research professors are not merely the disseminators of knowledge, but the creators of new knowledge. They incorporate their discoveries (and the process of discovery) into course materials, teaching students valuable critical thinking skills. Students who are immersed in rich research environments are better prepared for successful careers, they graduate on time, and they get jobs.”

- PRESIDENT KELLY DAMPHOUSSE

DOING MORE WITH MORE

TXST is serious about investing in our new shared vision for the future of our university. Doing more is essential to catapult TXST to the NEXT level in our teaching and research mission. Our Run to R1 achievement will not only improve student success outcomes, but it will also: • Bring more resources to the university. • Expand degree offerings. • Attract high quality students. • Increase the number of assistantships for students. • Make our graduates more competitive in the job market. • Attract high quality research faculty who will provide students with expanded opportunities to engage in research. • Increase the value of a TXST degree. Most of the improvements we strive to make require significant funding, achieving “more with more” requires us to have more revenue and resources, and NEXT IS NOW is designed to help inspire and secure the investments to bring our Hope and Aspirations High vision for the future of TXST to life.

R1 - NATIONAL RESEARCH UNIVERSITY Texas State University is committed to achieving What’s NEXT as a preeminent national research university in research and academics, and in promoting an exceptional student experience. Our campaign is on track to raise $250 million to advance initiatives focused on ensuring student success and becoming an R1 university. Since 2014, the campaign for a national research university has generated $215 million contributed by 49,000 donors, and increased Texas State’s endowment from $165 million to $334 million. The NEXT IS NOW campaign with the support of alumni, partners, and friends will help us achieve our Run to R1 goal as we seek to build a better, more efficient, and sustainable future for Texas and the nation.
