PHILOSOPHY Unity Medical Center believes that each individual is a unique person who deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. We recognize that our people are our most important resource and, therefore, place a major emphasis on our staff development. We make a commitment to consumer-focused care and seek opportunities to serve the health care needs of our community. We believe that continuous quality improvement is essential in all we do and is a vital measurement of what we want to be.

WELCOME Dear Friends, Welcome to our very first UMC Annual Report! 2021 was a challenging year, but there were also many positives that we wanted to share with all of you that you will see throughout this report. Our greatest accomplishment was the completion and opening of our new state-of-the-art building we like to call “The New Unity Medical Center". Some of our patients have even nicknamed it "The Grafton Hilton"! Everyone who participated in this project deserves a round of applause as there were many challenges along the way and the Covid pandemic certainly did its best to stall us. But thanks to the sheer grit and determination of our team and the community we were able to bring the project to completion.

Given the worldwide health challenges, our employees have learned how to adapt and wear many different hats. I cannot say enough positive words about our team. Primary care will always be our bread and butter, but we are growing in all areas, especially adding specialties the community desires. For example, Dr. Darin Leetun performed the very first shoulder joint replacement surgery in Grafton. Since that initial surgery, we have performed scores more. Our patient volumes have been growing at a near double digit rate for several years in a row and as a result, we have added approximately 50 new jobs to our payroll over the past couple of years. These new positions are spread across many departments.

UMC has been honored with awards including Polar Business of the Year, a National award for Quality, and we were a key part of Grafton being named North Dakota Large City of the Year. Personally, one of the highlights of the year for me was when the UMC Care Team hosted a group of 60 ninth grade students from Grafton High School for a day of learning and job shadowing also known as Scrubs Camp. The next Scrubs Camp is on the schedule for March 2022 and participation is expected to more than double. Kudo’s to everyone who helps guide these students down the path perhaps towards a career in healthcare.

UNITY MEDICAL CENTER OVERVIEW UNITY MEDICAL CENTER PROVIDES ACCESS TO QUALITY HEALTHCARE FOR THE REGION. Unity Medical Center's Mission Statement Unity Medical Center and its predecessors, Grafton Deaconess Hospital, St Joseph's Hospital and Grafton Family Clinic have been a vital part of the Grafton community for more than 119 years. We were founded to serve a growing segment of our community in need of accessible services.

Today, Unity Medical Center is an incorporated, community-owned and operated health care facility.

Included within Unity is an 11-bed acute care hospital and two family care clinics licensed by the North Dakota Department of Health. Unity is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation and employs more than 160 people.

We have continued to grow with the help of our donors and volunteers that make our mission possible. Unity Medical Center has the support of the Auxiliary, Unity Medical Center Foundation, and the people of Grafton and the surrounding region. Funds raised through Unity Medical Center's donors are used to purchase needed items and equipment as well as for continuing education for our staff.

Our purpose still remains the same: bring services to those in need.

THE NEW UNITY MEDICAL CENTER Unity Medical Center recently completed a $24 million, 36,000sqare foot expansion to their current building which is 65 years old. The project included a new Surgery Center, Emergency Department, Rehab Services, dedicated patient floor, and a Clinical Education Center. The project funding was provided by USDA Rural Development and Bank of North Dakota, along with a Building Capital Campaign through the UMC Foundation.

The new Unity Medical Center will be serving the greater Grafton region for decades to come with a facility that is not only modern in appearance but is extremely functional and provides a higher degree of safety for patients and employees.

The will allow for recruitment and retention of outstanding care providers.

THE NEW SURGERY CENTER A 2015 Facility Study found that Unity’s surgery space fell 54% below the standard for square footage and the equipment was in need of upgrading. The new addition to UMC allowed for an expanded Surgery Department with modern technology and state-of-the art equipment ensuring both UMC providers and visiting specialists are equipped with the facility they deserve.

Patients will experience greater privacy with rooms specifically designed for surgical preparation and recovery, whereas prior they were prepped in a semi-private temporary space. With the expansion and improvements, UMC is able to offer additional surgical procedures performed by current providers and visiting specialists. UMC started offering orthopedic surgeries at the end of 2020 in partnership with surgeons from Valley Bone & Joint Clinic.

As a practitioner, to be able to assist with UMC's growth, by adding new clinical and surgery services is very satisfying to me and UMC is being very strategic to be providing a regional service such as othopedics.

THE NEW PHYSICAL THERAPY AND REHAB SERVICES The Physical Therapy (PT) Department saw a 30% increase in visits from 2014 to 2017, reinforcing the need for a larger space and more staff. The expansion project relocated the PT Department from the second floor to the main level, allowing easier access for patients as well as a larger space to allow for more equipment.

The move allowed for cardiac rehab and traditional motor skills PT patients to be able to receive services simultaneously, whereas the limited square footage in the previous space prevented it. A 4% increase in annual visits is projected.

The PT department recently hired two new licensed physical therapists, Bill Atwood, PT, DPT and Makenzie Miller, PT. They now have four physical therapists on staff to accommodate more patients.

THE NEW EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT The Emergency Department has improved convenience and efficiency for emergency personnel and greater privacy for patients and families experiencing a health crisis. The expansion includes a large heated ambulance garage, a decontamination room, two trauma bays and two treatment rooms.

The upgrades improved UMC’s readiness for emergency patients while ensuring a strong, ongoing collaboration with telemedicine emergency referral through Avera Health of Sioux Falls.

The Emergency Department has a team of dedicated providers, which allows the other providers to be available in the clinic full-time as well as hospital rounds.

THE NEW PATIENT FLOOR The second floor includes acute patient care and comfort with 11 spacious, private rooms that accommodate healthcare technology, larger, more accessible bathrooms, and increased space for visitors making a stay at UMC a better experience for both patients and their families. UMC kept seven patient rooms in the original building to use for overflow, increasing the total bed capacity by nearly 30% from 14 to 18 beds.

There are four rooms with ceiling mounted Hoyer lifts ensuring greater safety for patients and staff and an Activities Room for Swing Bed Therapy patients.

The patient floor also features two negative pressure rooms reserved for patients with infectious illnesses. The system maintains a lower pressure inside the rooms than outside, keeping dangerous airborne particles contained. The contaminated air is removed via an exhaust system equipped with purifying filters that clean the air before it’s pumped outside and away from the facility, while non-contaminated filtered air flows into the room.

THE NEW EDUCATION CENTER The primary feature of the third floor is the Rural Medical Education Center which provides a contemporary environment for ongoing education. There is one large classroom which can be subdivided down to three smaller classrooms, as well as a private conference room for education coordination. With today’s health providers being asked to stay current on a wide range of professional development topics, continuing education classes can be delivered right at UMC via remote-access technology. Time and money are saved on what would otherwise be staff absences.

The University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences as well as other medical education institutions partner with UMC as a rural training site. UMC is the region’s healthcare education resource and will be able to expand its offerings in the community via the Rural Medical Education Center.

THRIVING THROUGH COVID Patient safety has always been a top priority for Unity Medical Center. The latest technologies and safety measures have been incorporated into the new building to ensure the wellbeing of patients and visitors. This includes UV light technology that purifies the circulating air in key locations throughout the building.

Four sets of Surfacide Helios® UV-C units are used daily to disinfect patient rooms, prep/recovery rooms, operating suites, the ER, and everywhere else in the facility where direct patient care is provided. The disinfection system is the world’s only patented, triple emitter ‘robotic’ UV-C light solution to rapidly eliminate and prevent the spread of deadly pathogens.

The design of the new building works well during a pandemic as the patient rooms are private and extremely spacious while the hallways throughout the building are wide, allowing for social distancing.

UMC staff are in constant contact with the ND Department of Health and Walsh County Public Health to stay informed on what’s happening locally and around the state and the in-house Covid Committee and infection control coordinator/RN facilitate training and education for staff.

All staff, medical and administrative, as well as visitors, are required to wear masks while they are in the building.

Also, all patients and visitors are screened as they enter the building.

AWARDS 2021 Polar Business of the Year Unity Medical Center was honored to be the recipient of the 2021 Business of the Year Award from Polar Communications. A business must be nominated by a Polar employee based on the following criteria: business excellence, customer relations, community service, recognition of achievement, and innovation of products and services.

More than 50 UMC staff and board members attended a surprise award ceremony on May 25. Polar CEO, Karl Blake presented the award to UMC CEO, Alan O'Neil and UMC Board President Jo Petersen also said a few words.

2021 Performance Leadership Award for Quality Unity Medical Center was recognized by The Chartis Center of Rural Health and the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH) with a Performance Leadership Award for Quality.

This award is based on the results of the Hospital Strength INDEX, which is a comprehensive and objective methodology developed by the Chartis Group for assessing how rural hospitals are performing. The INDEX is based entirely on public data sources and it encompasses all 1800 Critical Access Hospitals in the US along with ~900 rural and community facilities. There are eight performance pillars in the areas of quality, outcomes, and patient perspective, and Chartis percentile ranks each hospital’s performance against the full cohort of rural hospitals. Award winners are those facilities that ranked in the top quartile (75th percentile or above) in either quality, outcomes or patient perspective.

NEW SERVICES/EVENTS Allergy Testing Grafton Family Clinic offers in-house environmental and food allergy testing for ages six months and up. The test is a safe, needle-free skin test with results available within 15-20 minutes.

Orthopedic Surgery Dr. Darin Leetun from Valley Bone & Joint Clinic started seeing patients in Grafton in April 2020 and started performing shoulder surgeries shortly after. Dr. David Schall, also from Valley Bone & Joint, has plans to start performing total knee surgeries in Grafton in December 2021.

Mobile Surgical C-Arm UMC recently acquired the newest C-Arm in the state of ND with help from a Bremer grant and the UMC Foundation! A C-Arm is a portable x-ray machine that can be used in the operating room.

Prenatal/Postpartum Fitness with BIRTHFIT UMC Physical Therapy Department launched a six-week prenatal/postpartum fitness program, instructed with concepts from BIRTHFIT, led by Jordan Miller, PT, DPT, CSCS. This program is for women of ANY age who are trying to conceive, are currently pregnant or are postpartum.

Scrubs Camp UMC hosted the first annual R-COOL-Health Scrubs Camp for almost 60 Grafton ninth grade students on March 24, 2021. This was a partnership with ND Center for Rural Health, North Valley CTC and the Walsh County JDA. Students got to attend five, 25-minutes classes on various healthcare careers. The goal is to expose students to different in-demand healthcare careers available in rural northeast North Dakota. UMC received a $2,500 grant from ND Rural Health.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT Unity began a capital campaign in 2018 to support the expansion project, and to date donors have raised $892,652 toward the project.

That number is still growing. To thank our major campaign donors ($20,000+), the UMC Foundation board devised naming opportunities that showcase our community’s support to rural healthcare. The latest named space in our building is in memory of longtime Grafton resident Lynn Ebert. His gift to Unity has been endowed with the North Dakota Community Foundation and will benefit UMC annually in perpetuity. To recognize Lynn’s generosity, we are naming our new Surgery Center in his honor.

About half of these capital campaign gifts have been used for construction needs, including but not limited to HVAC, ER equipment, fire alarms, wayfinding signage and rooftop LED lighting.

Capital Campaign donors received a commemorative brick from the actual building project. They symbolically show that when a number of community members come together, they can physically build an amazing space brick by brick.
