REDEFINING MENOPAUSE SUPPORT FOR BLACK WOMEN
Beverley Powell, a semi-retired life coach and licensed menopause champion, has spent over 40 years championing diversity, equality, and inclusion. Now, she is transforming menopause support for black women, addressing unique challenges that are often overlooked.
Empowering Women Through Menopause
For over two decades, Beverley has focused on supporting black women, who often face distinct challenges during menopause. “Scientifically, we know black women may experience menopause earlier and for longer,” she explains. “But systemic discrimination, ancestral trauma, and workplace biases make it even harder.”
Stress from micro-aggressions and high cortisol levels can lead to severe health risks, including heart disease and stroke. Beverley emphasises the need for emotional and psychological well-being alongside physical health. “I encourage black women to burn the ‘superwoman cape’ and prioritise self-care over societal expectations.”
Personal Experiences Shape Advocacy

Beverley’s advocacy is deeply personal. Menopause took her by surprise in her early 50s, with erratic periods, sleeplessness, anxiety, and a loss of confidence. “I didn’t feel like the same Beverley,” she recalls. Seeking alternative support, she turned to a Chinese practitioner, whose advice on warm, nourishing foods was transformative. “Switching to soups and bone broths regulated my body temperature and marked a turning point.”
These experiences fuel her mission to create safe spaces where black women can share, support, and feel understood.
A Lifetime Of Service
Beverley’s career in public service, spanning the NHS, police, and prison system, has been defined by her commitment to social justice. Growing up as the only black child in her primary school, she experienced racism early, which ignited her drive to create change. Her achievements include mentoring colleagues, designing diversity training, and advocating for equality.
UBUNTU AND LIBERATION
Guided by the African philosophy of ubuntu—“I am because we are”—Beverley believes in collective success. She is also embracing rest as an act of resistance. “For generations, black women have been expected to keep going. I’m learning to say no and prioritise myself.”
Building A Legacy
Focused on legacy, Beverley is writing a book to share her knowledge and experiences. “It’s for little Beverley and every young woman seeking a better path. I want them to know they can succeed without sacrificing themselves.”
Beverley Powell’s story is one of empowerment, education, and inspiration. Even in semi-retirement, her mission is far from complete.
