MBCC AWARDS WINNERS DINNER 27TH JANUARY 2025

TOGETHER, WE RISE, UNITED WE STAND STRONG.

As I step into the vibrancy of Spring 2025, I find myself reflecting on a remarkable year of triumphs, challenges, and milestones that underscored my dedication to community empowerment and the recognition of unsung heroes. My journey throughout 2024 was marked by significant accolades and culminated in the most successful Multicultural Business and Community Champion (MBCC) Awards event to date.

One of the most notable highlights of my year was receiving the prestigious Beautiful Survivors Award from Leaders of All Nations International at the Houses of Parliament in September. This honour was a testament to my resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to uplifting others. Known for my ability to inspire through personal experience, this recognition at such a distinguished venue further cemented my status as a formidable force in community advocacy. In 2025, I was further honoured as the Woman of the Year for Business at The Power of A Woman Awards, I was truly humbled by this.

I acknowledge and applaud my dedicated team, expressing deep gratitude for their unwavering support as I continue to break barriers. Their commitment has played a crucial role in amplifying my mission and ensuring that the work of recognising and uplifting others continues with strength and purpose. Unity is strength, and as I often say, united we stand strong.

FOUNDER AND CEO REFLECTION ON 2024 AS I EMBRACE SPRING 2025

The pinnacle of 2024 achievements was the MBCC Awards ceremony, supported by our invaluable sponsors, held on 30th November at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole. The event attracted over 1,000 attendees, making it the largest and most successful in the awards’ history. The evening was a grand celebration of excellence, recognising outstanding achievements and inspiring stories from a diverse range of individuals and communities. The electrifying atmosphere and heartfelt tributes left a lasting impression on all who attended.

Since founding the MBCC Awards in 2016, I have watched it grow into a prestigious event that champions diversity and honours individuals who selflessly contribute to society. The 2024 ceremony was a testament to this mission, setting a new benchmark for future events. LEADING THE CHARGE FOR DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

Natasha Broomfield-Reid, founder and director of Diverse Matters, is a force to be reckoned with in the world of diversity and inclusion (D&I). With a career spanning over two decades, Natasha’s journey has been shaped by her unwavering passion for social justice, her lived experience as a Black woman, and her dedication to creating equitable opportunities for all. Speaking with Natasha is like catching a spark of energy; her enthusiasm and commitment are infectious.

A LEGACY IN HER NAME

Born in Nuneaton, a small town near Coventry, Natasha’s double-barrelled surname, Broomfield-Reid, is a testament to her mother’s feminist values. “It wasn’t common at all when I was growing up,” she explains. “But my mum went to deed poll to ensure her name—and ours—reflected both sides of our heritage.” This fusion of identities symbolises Natasha’s approach to her work: inclusive, intentional, and unapologetically authentic.

FINDING HER PATH

Natasha’s career began in community work. From mentoring African-Caribbean and mixed-race children in Warwickshire to supporting the unemployed through the government’s New Deal scheme, she has always focused on amplifying underrepresented voices.

Her pivotal role came in 2003 when she joined Victim Support, a national charity. Initially working as an area manager in Birmingham, Natasha quickly saw the need for a dedicated focus on diversity. “Birmingham is incredibly diverse, and I felt strongly that we needed to support all victims—regardless of their language, disability, or background.”

Her efforts led to the creation of a national diversity role, which she held until 2015. It was during this time that the seeds for Diverse Matters were planted. “People kept approaching me for advice or support with D&I work, and I was often using my annual leave to help them,” Natasha recalls. After being made redundant in 2015, she took the leap, launching Diverse Matters officially in January 2016.

WHAT DRIVES HER WORK

Natasha’s passion for D&I stems from her own experiences and her desire to empower others. She has worked tirelessly to address disparities, particularly in Black and mixed-heritage communities.

“I’ve always been passionate about young people,” she says. “The statistics are heartbreaking—Black and mixed-race children often enter primary school ahead of the curve, but systemic issues mean they don’t always achieve their full potential. I’ve seen this happen for decades.”

Even now, Natasha runs a Black girls’ group at her son’s school to provide representation and mentorship. “The school has no Black staff, so I wanted to create a space where the girls could see their potential and feel valued.”

NATASHA BROOMFIELD-REID

THE IMPORTANCE OF ALLYSHIP

For Natasha, allyship is about action. “It’s not enough to say you’re an ally. Are you speaking up? Are you challenging inequities when you see them? Are you educating yourself about others’ lived experiences?

Allyship is about actively dismantling barriers, not just standing by.”

Her work often involves guiding people to confront uncomfortable truths. “Many people have never thought about the Black experience until they’re faced with it. When they learn about systemic racism or the lived realities of Black communities, the reaction is often shock. But education is power— it is about knowing better and doing better.”

THE CHALLENGES OF ADVOCACY

Natasha’s career has not been without its challenges. She has faced racism and bias throughout her journey, from being told she needed to “change” to progress, to having her ideas ignored until someone else repeated them.

“There’s often a double barrier for Black women,” she explains. “You face challenges as a woman, and then you add race to the mix—it’s layers of oppression.”

However, Natasha has remained steadfast. “I’m hard-headed,” she says with a laugh. “I’ll do what I need to do, but always with kindness and integrity.”

SELF-CARE AS RESISTANCE

Amid her demanding work, Natasha prioritises selfcare. “Every two weeks, I have a 90-minute massage. It’s non-negotiable. Once, I cancelled because I was too busy, and I realised that was a mistake. Now, I never miss it.” She has also taken up swimming and enjoys holidays to recharge. “Barbados is next on my list,” she shares with a smile.

LOOKING AHEAD

As a mother to 12-year-old Tyrell, Natasha’s hopes are deeply personal. “I want him to be positive, humble, and hardworking. I want him to believe in himself and reach his potential.”

For Natasha, her work is about legacy—paving the way for the next generation while continuing to challenge the status quo. “I love what I do. It’s about bringing people along, educating them, and creating change. One person at a time, we can make a difference.”

Natasha Broomfield-Reid is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. Through her work, she continues to inspire and empower others, leaving an indelible mark on the journey toward equity and inclusion.

REDEFINING MENOPAUSE SUPPORT FOR BLACK WOMEN

Beverley Powell, a semi-retired life coach and licensed menopause champion, has spent over 40 years championing diversity, equality, and inclusion. Now, she is transforming menopause support for black women, addressing unique challenges that are often overlooked.

EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH MENOPAUSE

For over two decades, Beverley has focused on supporting black women, who often face distinct challenges during menopause. “Scientifically, we know black women may experience menopause earlier and for longer,” she explains. “But systemic discrimination, ancestral trauma, and workplace biases make it even harder.”

Stress from micro-aggressions and high cortisol levels can lead to severe health risks, including heart disease and stroke. Beverley emphasises the need for emotional and psychological well-being alongside physical health. “I encourage black women to burn the ‘superwoman cape’ and prioritise self-care over societal expectations.”

PERSONAL EXPERIENCES SHAPE ADVOCACY

Beverley’s advocacy is deeply personal. Menopause took her by surprise in her early 50s, with erratic periods, sleeplessness, anxiety, and a loss of confidence. “I didn’t feel like the same Beverley,” she recalls. Seeking alternative support, she turned to a Chinese practitioner, whose advice on warm, nourishing foods was transformative. “Switching to soups and bone broths regulated my body temperature and marked a turning point.”

These experiences fuel her mission to create safe spaces where black women can share, support, and feel understood.

A LIFETIME OF SERVICE

Beverley’s career in public service, spanning the NHS, police, and prison system, has been defined by her commitment to social justice. Growing up as the only black child in her primary school, she experienced racism early, which ignited her drive to create change. Her achievements include mentoring colleagues, designing diversity training, and advocating for equality.

BEVERLEY POWELL

UBUNTU AND LIBERATION

Guided by the African philosophy of ubuntu—“I am because we are”—Beverley believes in collective success. She is also embracing rest as an act of resistance. “For generations, black women have been expected to keep going. I’m learning to say no and prioritise myself.”

BUILDING A LEGACY

Focused on legacy, Beverley is writing a book to share her knowledge and experiences. “It’s for little Beverley and every young woman seeking a better path. I want them to know they can succeed without sacrificing themselves.”

Beverley Powell’s story is one of empowerment, education, and inspiration. Even in semi-retirement, her mission is far from complete.

ROBBIE GEE ON COMEDY

Mental Health, and the Importance of Telling Black Stories

ROBBIE GEE INTERVIEW

I sat down with comedy actor Robbie Gee at The Glee Club in Birmingham for a candid conversation about his incredible 37-year career in entertainment, his journey with mental health, and the importance of Black people telling their own stories.

RG: As far as I’m concerned, I’m surviving. I’m a survivor. It’s one of those things where I like to think I’m pretending, standing in my shadows. I don’t want them to find me out. I act like I don’t know, like I’m just pretending.

MS: I can relate to that. You’re doing it though, right?

RG: Yes, definitely. I started professionally in 1987, and to this day, I still pinch myself—not just on the good days, but every single day.

MS: Were you the funny one in your family, the one who always told the best stories?

RG: Maybe, but I don’t think I stood out in that way. We’re all jokers in my family. We come out of the shade and tell stories, re-enacting them with all the peaks and drops that make them come to life. It’s just how we live.

MS: I see you primarily as a comedy actor. What projects are you currently working on?

RG: Honestly, I still pinch myself. Right now, I have two series on Netflix—Supercell and Sexy Beast. I also have a role in Extraordinary on Apple TV. These are all significant series roles, and I can’t quite believe I’m here.

MS: The life of an actor can be challenging, especially when facing rejection. How have you navigated your journey in terms of mental health and confidence?

RG: That’s a deep question. If I open that box, it would take a while. But I’ll say this: You have to find your own mental stability and maintain it. For me, it’s all about simplicity. I’m a member of a gym, and I’ve got a cinema membership. I go to late-night screenings three times a week. And I make sure to get a steam and a massage regularly. That’s my way of practising self-care. I also walk a lot. It’s about finding what works for you. Everyone’s different, but it’s crucial to commit to something that helps keep you grounded.

RG: Without COBO (Comedy of Black Origin), we wouldn’t have the visibility we have today. But I’m not Black for just one month. As much as we joke about it, we only get one month to celebrate our history in the entire year. When I was getting the train here, I noticed the counter where they sell tickets had posters of Black figures like Nelson Mandela. They’re put up for one month and then stored away for the next eleven. It’s strange. I don’t know what the answer is, but we have to accept it for now—otherwise, we wouldn’t have anything.

MS: That’s a valid point.

RG: Yeah, we’re Black all year round, and we can’t hide it. I’ve been thinking a lot about Black History Month. For me, it’s every month. We’re constantly telling our own stories. I often think that we should have recorded our ancestors’ stories much earlier. Eddie Nestor once said we should have captured our parents’ stories before it was too late.

Whether they were part of the Windrush generation or not, we have so much to learn from their experiences.

The hurdles they faced, the rejection they endured—it’s all part of our history. When we capture their stories, we create a record of history.

We must continue to share our struggles, our successes, and our culture, because when we’re gone, how will the next generation know who we were?

Robbie Gee continues to be a trailblazer in comedy and acting, all while advocating for the importance of telling Black stories and celebrating our culture every month, not just during Black History Month.

WEST MIDLANDS COMBINED AUTHORITY: POWERING REGIONAL GROWTH

The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) is a key driver of economic growth, transport improvements, and skills development in the region. Established in 2016, it brings together seven local councils, businesses, and stakeholders to create a stronger, more connected West Midlands.

Under the leadership of Mayor Richard Parker and Deputy Mayor Sharon Thompson, WMCA is focused on boosting infrastructure, creating jobs, and supporting local communities. Transport is a top priority, with significant investments in the Metro tram network, bus services, and rail links to enhance connectivity across the region.

WMCA is also committed to skills and employment, ensuring residents have access to training and career opportunities in sectors such as digital, engineering, and green energy. Initiatives like the Adult Education Budget and Skills Bootcamps help bridge the gap between education and the job market.

Sustainability is central to WMCA’s vision, with ambitious plans to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2041. Investments in clean energy, electric vehicle infrastructure, and green jobs are helping to create a more sustainable future. Through innovation and collaboration, WMCA continues to shape a thriving, inclusive West Midlands, making it a great place to live, work, and invest.

DAMIEN MORGAN

40 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE: SOPHIE’S JOURNEY IN HAIRDRESSING

A Childhood Dream Turned Reality

For Sophie Spence, hairdressing was not just a career—it was a lifelong passion. From the tender age of five, she dreamed of working in beauty. Though she initially aspired to be a beautician, her journey naturally led her to hairdressing, a profession where her creativity could truly flourish.

As a teenager, Sophie began styling her friends’ hair at school, plaiting and experimenting with different techniques. This hobby soon became a source of extra income, and when she left school, she pursued an apprenticeship under the Youth Training Scheme (YTS) at Martin James. This was the beginning of a remarkable journey in the hair industry.

FROM HOME BUSINESS TO SALON

OWNER

Sophie’s career evolved as she gained experience working in various salons, including Scissor Trix in Birmingham’s Bullring. However, she quickly realised that working for others was not for her—she wanted the freedom to create her own space.

Before opening her first salon, Sophie ran a successful home-based business for seven years. As her client base grew, it became overwhelming to manage within her family home. She knew it was time to separate her work from her personal life. With the support of her father, she found a small unit, transformed it into a fully operational salon, and thus, Tegur Hair Salon was born.

THE MEANING BEHIND TEGUR

Rather than naming the salon after herself, Sophie wanted a name that reflected culture and identity. She found inspiration in an Ethiopian book, where she discovered the word “Tegur,” meaning “hair.” Though the original pronunciation was different, she kept the European-friendly version, giving her salon a unique and meaningful identity..

BALANCING BUSINESS AND FAMILY

Running a business while raising five children, including twins, was no easy feat. Sophie often had to juggle salon appointments with school runs, sometimes leaving mid-session to pick up her children. The financial uncertainty of self-employment was another challenge—balancing bills, rent, and family expenses required careful planning.

Despite the struggles, Sophie persevered, driven by her love for hairdressing and her commitment to her clients. She became widely known for her precision cuts and signature styles, with clients frequently recommending her work.

A STRONG BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP

In a move to expand her business and ease some of the pressures of sole proprietorship, Sophie partnered with Sara Hart, a close friend with whom she shared deep family ties. They established a new salon on Coopers Road, marking the start of an 18-year successful business partnership. This collaboration allowed Sophie to reduce her working days to three per week, giving her more balance in life.

A THERAPIST BEHIND THE CHAIR

Beyond styling hair, Sophie recognised the deep emotional connections formed in a salon. Clients confided in her, shared their struggles, and found comfort in her chair. To better support them, she pursued counselling qualifications, further enhancing the nurturing atmosphere of her salon.

THE NEXT GENERATION STEPS UP

With 40 years in the industry, Sophie is now looking towards the future. Her daughter, Pariece, has followed in her footsteps, mastering braiding, natural hair styling, and intricate designs. With her own brand, BTS, she has built a strong clientele, including male customers seeking specialised styles. Sophie hopes that one day, her daughter will take over the family business, allowing her to step back, enjoy her grandchildren, and embrace retirement.

A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE

As Sophie celebrates four decades in hairdressing, her journey stands as a testament to resilience, passion, and the power of community. From humble beginnings to a thriving salon, she has not only built a business but also nurtured a space where clients feel at home. Her story is an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs, proof that with hard work, determination, and a love for what you do, success is inevitable.

A TRUE LEADER, CHANGEMAKER, AND ADVOCATE FOR COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT

A Multi-Faceted Powerhouse

Kadi Wilson, the winner of the Senior Leader of the Year award at the MBCC Awards, is a woman who embodies leadership, resilience, and a deep commitment to community development. Despite her numerous achievements, Kadi remains humble, often questioning the title of ‘senior leader.’ Yet, her work speaks volumes about the impact she has on individuals and communities alike.

A true multi-faceted powerhouse, Kadi operates in various capacities, including community work, project management, and entrepreneurship. She has fostered over 11 children in her 13-year fostering journey, providing stability and love to those in need. Her entrepreneurial spirit shines through her ventures in property, a former music and dance studio, and an online travel business.

EMPOWERING OTHERS THROUGH LEADERSHIP

Although she doesn’t readily identify as an entrepreneur, her work reflects the qualities of a visionary leader. Kadi actively nurtures and uplifts people, ensuring that those with passion and drive find opportunities to succeed. Her 160-strong youth project is a testament to her commitment to supporting the next generation, not just in words but in action.

FINANCIAL LITERACY AND GENERATIONAL WEALTH

Financial literacy is another key focus for Kadi. She realised early in her business journey that financial education was essential for sustainability. Through self-education and surrounding herself with knowledgeable individuals, she developed a strong understanding of generational wealth, trusts, and financial planning.

PHILANTHROPY AND SOCIAL IMPACT

Her philanthropic efforts extend to raising funds and awareness for Sickle Cell charities, a cause close to her heart. Her cousin’s struggle with Sickle Cell motivated her to ensure those affected receive the necessary support and resources.

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2025

Kadi’s journey has been shaped by her experiences, including living in New York, where she honed her entrepreneurial mindset. Through self-care, travel, and goal setting, she maintains balance while juggling multiple responsibilities.

Looking ahead to 2025, Kadi is focused on completing her masters in counselling and psychotherapy while deepening her communityengagement, particularly in tackling youth violence. A natural leader, she continues to inspire through action, proving that true leadership is about service, impact, and unwavering dedication to making a difference.

EMPOWERING WOMEN AND BREAKING BARRIERS

Maz Alexander, a London based mother, social worker, mental well-being coach, stand-up comedian, and author. Her book, Arise Kintsugi Queens, draws inspiration from the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with gold. “It’s a metaphor for life,” Maz explains. “Despite traumas and adversities, we remain valuable and can emerge stronger.”

Maz’s book challenges “toxic positivity”, the pressure to stay optimistic at all costs. “Emotions like sadness and anger are natural responses to trauma. Suppressing them can hinder healing,” she says.

She also critiques societal expectations, particularly the “strong Black woman” archetype, which often suppresses vulnerability.

Comedy is another avenue through which Maz addresses mental health. “Making people laugh brings me joy,” she shares. “I talk about my scars rather than my wounds, turning pain into laughter.” Comedy, she believes, allows serious messages to be delivered in a palatable way.

As a coach, Maz helps professional women overcome imposter syndrome, set boundaries, and rebuild confidence. “Boundaries are essential,” she asserts. “They protect our health, time, and energy. Without them, we risk burnout.”

Maz also highlights how life transitions, like menopause, can unearth unresolved traumas. “These transitions bring emotions to the surface. Open conversations can normalise these experiences and encourage healing.”

Driven by purpose, Maz uses her experiences to advocate for underrepresented communities. “It’s okay not to be okay,” she reminds us.

Through her work, Maz inspires others to embrace their imperfections, challenge societal norms, and thrive.

How Dyslexia Inspired Silent Snow

As a dyslexic parent, reading aloud to my children was a struggle. I vividly remember my six-year-old daughter correcting a word I mispronounced—I felt like I had failed. The pressure to read perfectly drained the joy from storytelling. But instead of giving up, I turned to my strengths: creativity and imagination.

I began crafting bedtime stories from scratch, weaving adventure and magic into each tale. Without text to trip over, storytelling became a joy rather than a challenge. My children loved our shared imaginative journeys, and bedtime transformed into a cherished time of connection.

Fifteen years later, while walking in nature, I reflected on my journey. I knew many parents, especially those with dyslexia, faced the same struggles. What if a book could free them from the fear of misreading? The idea for Silent Snow was born— an illustrated story designed to inspire parents to create their own narratives, using imagery as a guide rather than relying on words.

Drawing from my love of nature; Highland cattle and the peaceful beauty of winter—I envisioned a world where imagination flourished. With the incredible illustrator Helen Turner bringing my vision to life, the magic unfolded. Publishing felt daunting, but with guidance from my friend Keisha and Marcia Publishing, my dream took shape.

Holding the first copy of Silent Snow was deeply emotional. It wasn’t just a book—it was an invitation for parents to embrace storytelling in their own way. I hope it empowers families to rediscover the magic of imagination, proving that storytelling has no limits.

For me, Silent Snow is just the beginning, a testament to creativity, confidence, and the boundless joy of sharing stories beyond the page.

On 16th January, 145 delegates from 46 UK organisations gathered in Birmingham for the Women In The Shade 2025 conference, organised by Co-Founders Marcia Ore and Karen Geddes QPM. Hosted by BT Group, the event focused on the underrepresentation of Black women in uniformed services. Officially opened by the Lord-Lieutenant of West Midlands, Dr Derrick Anderson CBE, delegates were welcomed by Simon Foster, West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, and Neil Tipping, BT Group.

The conference featured a range of insightful speakers, including Grace Ononiwu CBE, Dr Shungu Hilda M’gadzah, and Nicolle Ndiweni-Roberts. Attendees also heard via video message from The Rt Hon Anneliese Dodds MP, Minister for Women & Equalities, who spoke the contribution of Black women in strengthening workplaces and communities.

Panel discussions included “Navigating Change: Empowering Black Women In Leadership & Mental Health” and “Amplifying Voices: Advancing Inclusion and Wellbeing across Sectors.” The event culminated with a powerful address from Kerry-Ann Knight, who shared her experience winning an employment tribunal against the British Army.

“Delegates were given the opportunity to develop supportive networks and were provided with tools and resources, including a 30-day journal created by the event organisers in collaboration with Marcia Spence Publishing.” Marcia Ore reflected, “This conference underscored the significant role we all play in promoting systemic change.”
