Big celebrations set for the Big Dam this Australia Day The Mount Morgan Dam has certainly been proving a popular place for many during the school holidays, and this Australia Day is sure to be no exception.

Local residents are invited to come and celebrate Australia Day at the Big Dam on Saturday, January 26, along with the official opening of the Dam’s new district playground.

The morning will commence with the official opening of the playground at 8:30am; carried out by MP Ted Malone – Member for Mirani, and Assistant Minister for Emergency Volunteers, with Councillor Cherie Rutherford- Chair of Rockhampton Regional Council’s Parks and Recreation Committee.

The playground, which was completed at the end of 2012, comes complete with two picnic tables, chairs and double plate barbeque, 11 different types of playground equipment, outdoor gym equipment and a new car park. The new district playground was funded by Rockhampton Regional Council, the Queensland Government and the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program – Infrastructure Subsidy 2012-2013.

The official opening will then be followed by the local Australia Day Celebrations, held from 9am until midday.

The program for the local celebrations include kids’ rides, face painting, market stalls, and live music.

Food and drinks will be available, with a free sausage sizzle also part of the program (limited numbers, so be early to enjoy the traditional snag on the barbie!)

The event is one of four for the region hosted by the Rockhampton Regional Council, with programs also scheduled for Gracemere, Rockhampton and Yeppoon.

The Rockhampton Heritage Village is the location for Rockhampton Region’s Citizenship and Australia Day Awards Ceremony this year, taking place at 10am.

The new playground for the Mount Morgan Dam is proving popular with young locals and visitors alike. The official opening of the playground is set for this Australia Day, at 8:30am. With so many headlines on the devastating fires of today all throughout Australia which are causing so much heartache and sorrow perhaps the fire history of our town would be of current interest.

The first fire was in 1896 which destroyed the entire business section of East Street but thankfully the buildings were rebuilt. In 1922 the second major fire destroyed the buildings of Kelly and Sons, general store, Duffy Brothers Drapery Shop and an auctioneering business of Hempenstall Brothers.

Sadly these businesses were not replaced. They were established between the Leichhardt Hotel and the grounds of the Central State School. Unique features of these businesses were the names of the businesses implanted in the footpath by white pebbles. This remarkable art work disappeared when the Council at the time re surfaced the footpath with bitumen. Older locals shed tears when this historical lettering was hidden.

Many towns’ folk in 1923 saw fire destroy the lower end of Morgan Street including the School of Arts, St. Elmo’s Boarding House, Imperial Hotel, Argus Printery and a feed store. Only the School of Arts was rebuilt in 1923. St. Elmo’s boarding house was a two storied building which was a very impressive construction in that era. Three boarders of that time included young Englishmen who had just arrived in the Mount looking to work in the mine, one being father of a Pride member.

The next fire is well known as it was the 1925 underground mine fire. This added to the industrial problems of that time and resulted in the liquidation of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company.

Our fifth major fire occurred on December 11th 1939 (Speech Night) when 17 shops in Morgan Street main business centre were destroyed. Of course Morgan Street was rebuilt.

Fire is the most horrific of disasters and so to all the people of Tasmania and other centres of Australia, we express all our sympathy and caring.

How fortunate we are that the Mount has such dedicated community spirited people that in their own time they regularly visit the Big Dam, collect all the rubbish that has carelessly and thoughtlessly been thrown around and deposit it in the Bins leaving the area in pristine condition. Our Big Dam is for the enjoyment of everyone but we all have the responsibility to THINK CLEAN – BE TIDY and use the BINS. A small effort by adults and children will have our lovely picnic area always a delight to enjoy - minus rubbish. If you do not use the BINS take your rubbish home. To the dedicated folk who willingly do this clean-up task, we express our BIG THANKS but we sincerely hope that those people who are careless about their rubbish soon become responsible citizens and your free time can be enjoyed in other pleasures.

News from MMPAD

Hi Argus readers, Firstly, Happy New Year!! We are back in action after a two week holiday here at Mount Morgan Promotion and Development (MMPAD), and are excited to let you know of a couple of our current projects.

Restocking the Mount Morgan Dam: Currently we are raising funds to help purchase a number of fish fingerlings to help restock the Mount Morgan Dam. This is an annual project for MMPAD, and is part of a Restocking Management Plan for the Dam. Each year, native fish are purchased through fish hatcheries and released into the Dam. Although these fingerlings are quite tiny when first released, within a couple of years they are fit for legal catching size and help to see the Dam further stocked.

Last February saw over 7,000 Golden Perch Fingerlings introduced to the Dam as part of the project. This year we are hoping to introduce another 8,000 Golden Perch.

We are on our way to seeing this into fruition, thanks to the generous support of the local community for our fundraisers so far. A huge thanks goes to all who purchased tickets for our Christmas Hamper last year! All proceeds have been put towards this year’s restocking. We hope to raise the final sum in the upcoming weeks and see the new inhabitants of the Dam introduced in Feb/ March.

Mount Morgan marketing: Have you been hearing Mt Morgan ads on the radio this holiday season?… These are part of a school holiday advertising campaign, encouraging visitors to take a trip and discover Mount Morgan.

Thanks to the great support of 12 local businesses, we were able to collaborate a collective advertising campaign during December, which resulted in the production and airing of three radio advertisements. Each ad has been playing on Hot FM and Sea FM over the school holidays.

December also saw MMPAD welcome the company, Maddog Productions to Mt Morgan, where they captured footage of the local area and a lovely local family. This footage has been worked into two short commercials, presenting some of the great things to see and do in the Mount. Thanks to the support of the local businesses involved in the holiday campaign, this commercial is currently being aired on TV. Be sure to keep an eye out for these on Channel Ten, One and 11.

MMPAD Christmas Hamper Winner:

Congratulations to Maggie (pictured below) who was the lucky winner of the MMPAD Christmas hamper and wheelbarrow.

Maggie purchased her winning ticket when visiting Mount Morgan from Rockhampton for the Christmas Tree Festival in early December.

A huge thanks to all who bought tickets and helped MMPAD put funding towards restocking the Mount Morgan Dam with fingerlings.

Saint Mary’s Church Hamper:

Congratulations to local resident, Thorlene Curtis who was drawn the lucky winner of the Saint Mary’s Church Christmas hamper and wheelbarrow.

For most people learning to play an instrument, the idea of quickly taking the stage in front of a large crowd or performing a solo audition for a university acceptance remains just that... an idea; not something most would feel confident doing within a short time of picking up their instrument.

This certainly wasn’t the case however for local resident, Isaac Fox; who has recently been accepted to study a Bachelor of Music at University, playing two instruments (one which he began learning the same year of his university acceptance).

For his audition, Isaac played a Bossa nova version (modern trend of samba and jazz styles) of Fred Astaire’s “The Way You Look Tonight”, along with a vocal piece of John Mayer’s “Who Says”.

The young talent will begin his studies in March of this year, where he will be provided with specialised individual music training over the next three years.

“Of course the dream is to become a professional singer/ songwriter” Isaac said when asked about his aims following graduation.

Last month the gifted local graduated from the Cathedral College (TCC), Rockhampton with news that he had been accepted into CQUniversity for bass guitar; an instrument he picked up just six months prior. He will also be playing guitar; an instrument he began playing in 2011.

“I would also really like to teach music.” He said.

“My Dad has played the guitar, and he taught me a little.”

Isaac said, discussing his extraordinary journey from beginner to university acceptance.

Isaac will be heading to CQUniversity this year, studying a Bachelor of Music.

Having both bases covered, Isaac is also looking to complete a postgraduate in secondary education.

“I decided to play when I went to TCC and got involved in the music class they had on offer.”

Isaac continued learning guitar, adding the bass in his senior year. He also took part in a number of the school’s musical competitions along the way– including the Catholic School Music Festival in Brisbane, which saw Isaac a part of TCC’s string orchestra, along with the school’s string ensemble for last year’s Regional Battle of the Bands (which saw his group win the Gold Award).

Isaac said his interest in learning the guitar and bass was sparked further following an Open Day at CQUniversity.

“In all honesty, I didn’t really give much thought to studying music at a university level.” Isaac said.

“I just didn’t really have much of an idea of how it would help long term or what you would even do.

“At the Open Day though, they detailed all of the things you could do through their courses, and it really gained my interest.”

The exciting news of university acceptance followed a month after Isaac performed a solo audition at the University; part of the criteria to seal a spot with the institute.

Mount Morgan will soon see a new edition to its swimming complex.

Rockhampton Regional Council is installing a new wading pool into the facility, and Councillor Cherie Rutherford, Chair of Council’s Parks and Recreation Committee knows that this resource won’t go unused within the Mount Morgan area. “$100,000 has been budgeted for the new wading pool which will be approximately 9m x 6m, oval in shape and will slope from flat to 400mm in the centre,” explained Cr Rutherford.

“This will allow the water to lap over the front edge of the pool, and will be a gold pebble smooth non-slip finish to give it a real beach affect.

“This is great for young families in the area to get out with their kids and be healthy and active, and it is great to see this resource within the Mount Morgan area.

“Work on the wading pool is scheduled to start in April 2013 and will take approximately one month to be completed.”



The 2012 Junior Season started off with low team numbers for both the Under 10 and Under 12 Teams. Luckily for us though, there were a handful of willing Rockhampton kids wishing to only sign on with the Mount.

With little to work with we combined the training sessions, and this appeared to be very successful.

Throughout the season, our sides always had the problem of being the smallest club in the competition, but that never worried our youngsters; always giving it their all.

The eight week competition saw our under 10’s and 12’s prove their skills, with both teams losing just one or two games in the season. Along with their impressive team work, we are also very proud that half our under 12’s filled the Brahmans Under 12’s Rep Team this year which was an exceptional end to the season for all.

We look forward to kicking off the Juniors again, later this year.

Thanks again to all who played, you all did a great job and played well in your teams.

Grilled fresh black figs drizzled with honey & balsamic vinegar, and vanilla ice cream with Balsamic Chocolate sauce: ©Mountain Mick Blake, Baree

I got the figs at the market, fresh straight off the tree… so last week I created this for my loving Wife “Karin”, my family and friends, and found that grilling the fresh black figs drizzling, and warming them through with honey and balsamic vinegar is a match made in Heaven.

Vanilla ice cream balances the sweetness of the dressed figs with the bitter/sweet of the balsamic vinegar and rich dark chocolate in the sauce. The balsamic vinegar and rich dark chocolate in the right balance is also a match made in Heaven. The only thing is, you only can get fresh figs once a year.

Ingredients: You will need 1 to 2 large figs (black or white) per person, Balsamic vinegar and honey for drizzling Method: Okay, cut the figs in half long ways, and lay them skin side down on a greased baking tray. Now, simply drizzle over the figs the balsamic first and then drizzle with the honey- now in the oven at 180°C for 20 minutes or under the salamander/grill for about 5 minutes.

Now serve with homemade vanilla ice cream (store bought is okay) and drizzle this with Balsamic Chocolate sauce (see below for steps on this).

Balsamic Chocolate Sauce: Ingredients: 350g bitter dark chocolate 70% cocoa butter 2 Tblsp balsamic vinegar 200ml Sweetened condensed milk 200 ml skim milk Method: Put the whole lot in a 1lt microwaveable jug. Heat on high for 2 minutes; whisk with wire eggwhisk and stir until all chocolate is broken up and the sauce is smooth.
