All aboard the New Mount Morgan Driver Reviver Site

A passionate Mount Morgan community, as well as the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), Rockhampton Regional Council and 4RO radio station, turned out last Thursday to open a new Driver Reviver facility at the Mount Morgan Railway Museum and Visitor Information Centre.

Mr Colin Edmonston, Regional Road Safety Manager with TMR, indicated that the Driver Reviver Program has operated for over 28 years with more than 50 established sites across Queensland.

"Now we're excited to have Tourism Queensland on board,

with 20 Visitor Information Centres coming online to expand coverage across the state's road network,” he added.

Mr John Steinberger, President of Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc. [MMPAD] highlighted that the iconic reminder of Central Queensland's rich gold mining history provides an ideal location for travellers to stop, revive and survive, as well as learn a little about the region.

"I commend MMPAD’s personnel and volunteers for their efforts in establishing the program to this point and know that the travelling public will be offered a friendly smile when they get their cuppa," he said.

Acting Mayor, Councillor Neil Fisher, who also supports the new site said it provided a great opportunity for the Mount Morgan community to play a role in road safety servicing traffic using the Burnett Highway.

Adjusted WTS hours from February

Rockhampton Regional Council this week decided to roll out new hours at the Gracemere and Mount Morgan Waste Transfer Stations starting Monday, 1 February 2021.

Waste and Recycling Councillor Shane Latcham said the Council table carefully considered a number of factors and this decision balanced customer demand with operational efficiencies.

“This can be a bit of a balancing act between providing the best level of service at the most efficient return to ratepayers,” said Cr Latcham.

“In making this decision we looked at the data on when our Waste Transfer Stations are at their quietest and made small reductions at those quiet times. Going off this data, we believe that community members shouldn’t be impacted by these changes, yet we will see some real cost savings.

“We’re not trimming the operating times too much, but this way we’ll still be able to provide an exceptional level of service while avoiding some of those quiet hours.

“We will also be exploring the feasibility of other solutions for our Waste Transfer Stations in the future to ensure the best service for our communities.

“These changes won’t come into effect for a while, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank the communities in Gracemere and Mount Morgan for their understanding.”

Division 4 Councillor Ellen Smith said the new hours would continue to see 7-day a week service at the Gracemere WTS.

“We know that this will be a change for the community but the data tells us that most people don’t use the station in the times we’ve changed the hours so the community shouldn’t be impacted,” Cr Smith said.

Division 5 Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the Mount Morgan community would also see the changes come into effect.

“Customer demand on Tuesdays and Thursdays is currently quite low, which gives us confidence that we can achieve cost savings and still continue to meet the needs of the Mount Morgan community,” Cr Rutherford said.

Mount Morgan Waste Transfer Station will be closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays and will be open from 9 am to 3 pm on all other days.

Waste Transfer Stations at Bouldercombe, Bajool, Alton Downs and Bushley will not be affected.

This was a different ceremony than in previous years due to COVID-19.

Next year will be a new era for the Year Six students, as they will be starting Year Seven at the Mount Morgan State High School.

All Year Six students completed their introduction to life at High School earlier in the term.

BUSY WEEK ON THE MOUNT

Mount Morgan is preparing to celebrate Christmas with several activities been organised by Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc [MMAPD].

MMPAD has again organised the Buy Local Promotion and Light up for Christmas and as a special treat this year, MMPAD is organising the Twilight Carols at the Mount.

The carols evening will be held at the historical Mount Morgan Railway Station on Friday, 18 December.

Gates will open at 5 pm with the carols starting at 5.30 pm. Foot traffic can access the Railway complex through the northern and southern end gates.

Leading the carolling will be local musicians, the Mount Ukes, Cammo, Hammo and Suzie and Sing Australia. Drinks, tea, coffee and sausage sizzle will be available Parking is available at the Glen Gordon end of the complex and disability parking will be at the opposite end. There will be drop off zones at each end.

Covid-19 restrictions will apply and patrons will be expected to sign in.

The organisation’s President, John Steinberger said it had been a difficult year for everyone and it was good that the Buy Local campaign gave a lift to local business and of course great times for the winners.

“We have the draw in the morning and then roll right on that afternoon with the Twilight Carols. It’s Christmas let’s put people in the spirit to celebrate Christmas.

It promises to be a family oriented evening of merry Christmas entertainment,” he said.

The Christmas lights competition will be judged on Thursday, 17 December after 7 pm and the draw for the Buy Local Promotion will take place on Friday, 18 December at the rotunda in Morgan Street at 10 am.

As well as drawing the winners of the Buy Local Draw, MMPAD will also announce the winners of the Christmas Lights on Friday morning in Morgan Street.

The year has been one of uncertainty, however through it all we remain committed to seeing our hall thrive once again. It has been frustrating awaiting bureaucratic wheels to turn. However, we hope things can be clarified by early next year, and we can proceed ahead with grant applications, hall improvements and community events.

BETROTHAL AT FAMILY HOME

Two former Mount Morgan women, Areeftha Fay-Tull and Korinda Hayes have excelled in a recent graduation ceremony held at the Northern Territory Resort of Yulara.

The Awards were held on 5 December at Yulara, with Areeftha presenting the Graduate Address. Areeftha also won the William Angliss Institute Award for Academic Excellence. The ceremony completes Areeftha’s Certificate III in Hospitality.

Korinda received Front of House Excellence award in her Certificate III – Hospitality – Front Office training.

Both Areeftha and Korinda received full time employment with Yulara Resort, which will also provide them with many career options in the future.

A small gathering of family and friends witnessed the betrothal of Jarrad Traynor, son of Ian and Keri Traynor to Maria Scott from Hawk’s Bay, New Zealand.

Maria is the daughter of Warwick Scott and Brenda Matthews.

While any betrothal or wedding is special, this one was made even more special by the attendance of Keri Traynor, who has been in Carinty for the past 20 months.

Up until three and a half years ago, Keri worked alongside husband, Ian in the Mount Page 8

Morgan Post Office and was considered one of the best post mistresses, Mount Morgan has had. The Ceremony was held at Ian and Keri’s home in Thompson Avenue and was attended by Ian and Keri’s daughter, Nicole, Ian’s brother and sister-in-law and his best friend. Maria’s, grandmother, parents, siblings and friends were Skyped in across the Tasman to witness the proceedings.

Following the ceremony a small circle of friends joined the celebration lunch.

Supporting them on the night was Areeftha’s mother Amanda, Jennifer Lodewikus, Lesley Scorgie and William and Clive Hayes.

The graduation attendees also had an opportunity to visit Uluru, Kata-Juta and the Fields of Light.

“I was very proud of both girls for their achievements and the fact they have a career,” she said.

QCWA NEWS

New Challenges, New Beginnings 2020 well you could say it has been anything but a regular year. It has made people think about how they do things yet at the same time people have also needed help in many ways. Contacting people by phone to check if family, friends or colleagues were ok, has been one form of communication that has been used. We all have been impacted by this year’s turn of events mainly being the pandemic that has struck the world and is still a serious situation.

Many associations and groups have been impacted as the normal yearly ways of fundraising have been removed and new ways of fundraising have been implemented.

Social distancing, limited numbers at functions and constant necessary cleaning has all played a part in holding and not holding functions. The Mount Morgan Branch of the Queensland Country Women’s Association [QCWA] has been affected like many other organisations in our area. The local cent sales and hoy days have been cancelled. This has also impacted on keeping the maintenance on the CWA Hall up to standard. The increase in Insurance premiums and the work that needs to be done on the hall have all been discussed.

Last year we had 14 members and due to members leaving town, health concerns and decrease in the number of members, it has been decided to put the hall on the market for sale. Yes, that is right it has been a hard decision to make, but it is what we must do. After the founding members working hard to have a hall and after being in use as a QCWA Hall for 68 years, the members and the hall must part ways. Until the time comes the hall will still be used by the branch for branch meetings but once sold the members will seek a new meeting place. ‘’The Branch will not be closing’’. I would like to make it clear that the branch is alive and well. Yes we are seeking new members and we will look at different avenues such as night, weekend or

Mount Morgan Multi Purpose Health Service Community Advisory Network Update

Community Advisory Network: Earlier this year our Service conducted a Community Survey. This is a necessary process as the tenure of CAN Members is three years and needs to be reviewed at this stage.

Unfortunately, due to Covid 19 the responses were limited as some Clubs/organisations were on a forced hiatus. Recently our CAN reviewed the responses and conducted interviews for nominees.

The names of the successful applicants will be published in the New Year.

We would like to acknowledge the current CAN members who have very generously given of their time over recent years. CAN Members not only attend bi-monthly meetings but are often called upon to be representatives on interview panels and are important contacts within our Community. These members contributions to our service are important and their suggestions and advice is invaluable and very much appreciated. We would also like to acknowledge the service of some of our past members, who for various reasons, have resigned from the CAN during their tenure. Thankyou also to members who have chosen to withdraw at the conclusion of their tenure.

The Mount Morgan Mine Company donated funds to the branch over the years and now the Council and Stephen Andrew MP and other MP’S have helped over time, along with many local residents.

We would like to continue to be a part of the Mount Morgan Community.

We would like to continue to help others, lobby governments to improve education, health, road safety, age care, living conditions MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

and much more as we have done for many years. If you would like to join us and become members of the QCWA, please do not hesitate as it is very rewarding. The Golden Mount Festival Association recently held its last attempt at forming a new committee to potentially have the festival operational in 2021. Whilst some new members came forward and we were able to form a new committee, it’s still a long road ahead to a successful festival.

The new committee consists of President Kerrilyn Page (returning to the Festival after almost 10 years), Vice President Daryl Jacobson, Treasurer Kylie Donald, and Interim Secretary Cassandra Donald.

We also welcomed some new members on the night, thank you so much for signing up.

The committee now faces the task ahead of pulling together a festival in a short time frame and in Covid-safe conditions! Quite a task. We would dearly love new members and volunteers to be friends of the Festival to help out.

We also are very keen to have a very inclusive festival welcoming all businesses, clubs and organisations to jump on board and work with us to do the very best we can.

POLICE NEWS Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the Mount Morgan community. We have had a very interesting year with many trials and tribulations. This has given the spirit of our community the opportunity to shine through and show that small towns are the best place to live and work. Covid-19 is still with us so continue to social distance and practise good hygiene. I want to touch on a few topics before the year is finished.

Please lock your doors and secure your property this holiday season, especially if you are going away. If you are drinking these holidays then ensure you do not drive. The Queensland Police will be out in force, not just in Mount Morgan. What a shame it would be to finish the year without a drivers licence.

You will have noticed there are now signs prohibiting off road motorbikes and motor vehicles at the dam.

Enforcement action will be taken against persons breaking these rules. If you have any issues regarding these restrictions or the new mountain bike trails, please liaise with the local council.

Regardless of your opinion of the situation, one thing can be agreed upon and that is mountain bikes and motorbikes cannot operate on the same trails. This will only lead to serious injuries for both parties. In the meantime why not ask Santa for some mountain bikes for you and your family to try out the trails?

You might enjoy it.

Lastly, our station counter will be operating in a reduced capacity over Christmas due to resources being deployed in response to Covid19.

NO7 GALLERY UPDATE What a huge year it has been for No7 Gallery! Things have been difficult for everyone with Covid restrictions, however it is a timely reminder with a bit of a scare recently, not to let our guard down this festive season.

We must continue sanitizing and social distancing for the sake of keeping loved ones, especially elderly and the vulnerable, safe from Covid. During a few days of waiting for test results, it is phenomenal how far and wide acquaintances, friends and family can travel and how many people they can come in contact with.

The numbers are staggering, and contact tracing must be a difficult job. Enough of that, but please everyone, take care.

Over the holiday period, our well received Retro Explosion Exhibition continues, with some lovely Christmas stock thrown in, until March when we will be unveiling “Diversity”. This will be a culmination of cultures, abilities, evolution and conservation. All Artists are welcome to submit works, and anyone interested in performances or cuisine, we would love your input for the opening showcase, Saturday 13th March.

We have missed our Friday No7 Art Squad immensely, so look forward to resuming

workshops in the New Year. We have an exciting collaboration commencing in January, with The Queensland Art Gallery| Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Children’s Art Centre and Regional Services that has been adapted from the exhibition “Now is the Time”

by Raquel Ormella. Her works take influence from activism, particularly environmental, and it will be exciting to explore and engage with our youth around social awareness and environmental factors that will impact their futures.

To summarize 2020 on a positive: Amazing Volunteers, supportive platform for Artists, thankful for local engagement and travelling visitors, grateful for a beautiful shopfront makeover, fantastic exhibitions, local business collaborations, support of worthy charities, and excited for an amazing 2021!

LIBRARY NEWS December is the start of summer, and that means the Summer Reading Club is here again! This year’s theme is Myths, Legends and Fairy tales, and encourages the discovery of tales of wonder and adventure.

Libraries are celebrating a little bit differently this year, with a lucky door competition and some great prizes to be won. To enter, simply fill out an entry form each time you come into the library. The more times you visit, the more entries Page 14

is fast approaching and we are all very busy getting ready for the festivities. If you’re stuck for ideas, the libraries have many resources to help you in planning and preparing your celebration.

From wrapping techniques and decorating to baking and cooking, you’re sure to find something that will help you get your Christmas sorted. With your library card you can borrow up to 20 items (with a maximum of 5 DVDs) so make sure you come in and stock up before the Christmas closures. If you get caught up in the holiday rush and find yourself short of movies or reading material, our online resources will see you through. Wally Hall Golf Day

Mount Morgan’s Wally Hall Memorial Golf 3-Ball Ambrose was played on 28 November - a little later than normal due to Covid-19.

Eleven teams braved the heat of the day. The winners were Lance, Shai and Lindsay (pictued below with Andrew Pearce and Cheryl Hall) with Simon, Melissa and Jackie as runners-up.

The Hall team of Barry, Dylan and Tom came in third.

Pinshots were handed out on each hole. Raffles were held throughout the day with proceeds going to the Queensland Cancer Council.

Thank you to the Mount Morgan Golf Club for everything. Hope to see you again next year.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year And thanks for another year of happy friendship

END OF AN ERA FOR MATT & CLAIRE

When school finished on Wednesday, not only did it mean the end of the school year for students and teachers alike, but for Deputy Principal Matt Winning and fiancee Claire Lauder, it represented the end of an era. Claire started teaching at Mount Morgan High in 2014 and Matt in 2015. Over the years Matt and Claire started a relationship and eventually became engaged. The couple are expecting their first baby early in the new year. The school, for Matt and Claire was their first choice for teaching and both are sad to be leaving, but are excited about the arrival of their son, their new life and their new teaching positions, although Claire will be on maternity leave in 2021.

Matt will be teaching at Coolum State High. Claire when she returns to teaching will be at the newest school in Queensland - Baringa State Secondary College at Caloundra.

Red Hill State School 1900 - 1931

School opening ‘A large number of parents and 180 children were present at the opening of the Red Hill school … This school has been a long felt necessity on the Tipperary Hill side of the town … The present site was granted in May, 1897 … The school and teacher’s residence were estimated by the department to cost £920 …’ (‘Opening of the Red Hill School’, Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton, Qld. : (1878-1954), 26 January 1900).

Prize-giving ‘The breaking-up of the Red Hill School, with the annual distribution of prizes, took place on Friday afternoon [16 December 1904]. The members of the Committee and several of the parents of the children were present. The Chairman of the Committee (Mr. L. Courtney) distributed the prizes and congratulated the winners on their success* … After the children had sung two or three numbers, three hearty cheers were given for Mr. Baldwin [the head teacher] and his assistants, the Committee and for Misses Wilder and Kearney [assistant teachers], who had donated special prizes for needlework. The singing of the National Anthem [‘God Save the King’] brought the proceedings to a close …’ (‘Red Hill State School’, Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton, Qld. : 1878-1954), 20 December 1904).

* Prizes were given for general proficiency, drawing, home exercises, needlework, writing copies, memorisation, sums, good behaviour, the most popular boy and the most popular girl. There was a special prize for the best drawing of a map of England. c.1912 / Mount Morgan / Red Hill State School / Some pupils on the grounds of the school and a teacher walking towards the school building in a long dark dress / The school opened on 22 January 1900 for boys and girls aged 5 to 14 years / Original teaching staff: head teacher to 1913, Mr Daniel Baldwin, and two assistant teachers / Six months after the school’s opening, 340 pupils attended the school with a floor space for 150 children, requiring urgent additions to the original building and additional teaching staff / The school could be accessed via a swing bridge over the Dee River / The Great Depression caused the permanent closure of the school on 31 May 1931.

Movie Review THE SILENCING Rayburn Swanson (Nikolaj Coster - Waldau, A.K.A. Jamie "Always Pay Their Debts" Lannister from GAME OF THRONES) is the best hunter and trapper in the entire Boundary Waters Wilderness region, much to the chagrin of his lovely teenage daughter Gwen.

She loves her Dad dearly but she strongly disagrees with the huntersurvivor ethic in the 21st Century.

She'd rather he protected the animals than hunted them. And that's not all that she disapproves of - Gwen is worried that her Dad drinks too much...

Driving home, near dark, confident in her love and dismissive of her concerns, Rayburn resists her protests and stops to buy more alcohol. Having quickly grabbed his favourite bottle from the store, he stepped out into the cold evening air and headed for his truck. But then - where was Gwen? She wasn't where he'd left her with the vehicle, she was nowhere in sight. Rayburn called out and searched and searched...

Gwen had vanished, disappeared - she was gone...

Five years later and still no Gwen.

Rayburn has slipped perilously into a downward spiral of alcoholism and self-destruction. After Gwen disappeared (was kidnapped?) he swore off hunting and trapping. He decided to help the very animals he used to kill by establishing a selfsufficient sanctuary that borders the vast inhospitable wilderness beyond. Covering a total of around fifty square miles, in honour of his daughter, Rayburn named this place Gwen's Wildlife Sanctuary.

Now he spends his days drinking and monitoring the animals' activities through a series of closedcircuit cameras dotted throughout his secluded property. One day rolls into another until... There! On that monitor; a strangely shaped shadow moving like a hunter quickly and stealthily through the forest. Was it a man? It had to be, but if so he was covered from head to foot in some kind of creepy shaggy suit. Was that a weapon, that weird object in his hand? And what was he hunting..?

Rayburn quickly scanned ahead through the monitors. What? Was that a girl running for her life? The shadow appeared to be gaining

on her. Oh no! She looks like Gwen... Could it be? Rayburn reaches for his rifle...

So begins one of the best thrillers we've come across in quite a while. Enthralling, intense and totally gripping, THE SILENCING will hold your attention through all of it's creepiness, twists and turns and visceral action sequences.

A USA/Canadian co-production made in Canada, THE SILENCING was written by Micah Ranum, directed by Robin Pront and co-stars Annabelle Wallis.

THE SILENCING is properly rated at MA15+ for "strong themes and violence" and it runs for an hour and a half where you won't even want to stop for coffee.

Pride in Your Town

Goodbye, Good Luck and Thank you.

About three months ago, the then trio (before Jean’s passing) decided that after presenting the article, ” Pride in Your Town” for 12 years, and never missing an edition it was time we called it a day. We have run out of history items, interesting facts, and unusual stories, so this is our goodbye song. The then trio has enjoyed all the effort that has been spent and we do hope our readers also have enjoyed some articles over the past twelve years. We thank you for the comments you have passed on to us, some that you enjoyed certain editions and others you found a trifle uninteresting. All welcomed.

We sincerely hope that some energetic person or persons will carry on with a Pride article. We also hope you will keep in mind the motto of “Think Clean ----Be Tidy and take care of your town. If you have any spare-time, please do some volunteering work as all committees need assistance. Again, thank you for your interest over the past twelve years.

The above screws, nails, wire and glass is just a little sample of what was collected at three spots at the No. 7 Dam. It was brought into the Argus by a regular walker at the dam.

The “Pride” team has, over the years, espoused the cause of keeping the town and surrounds clean and tidy. While litter of any kind is particularly unappealing, this type of “litter” is dangerous not only to vehicles, but more importantly to humans, pets and wildlife.

The dam is a recreation area for many children and it would be dreadful if a serious injury was to occur as a result of this type of littering.
