Using our water wisely

Rockhampton Regional Council and Fitzroy River Water are calling on residents to get on board with National Water Week, which this year is all about reimagining our water future.

Rockhampton Regional Council Water and Environment spokesperson, Councillor Donna Kirkland, said the Reimagining our Water Future theme was a vital one.

“Access to clean water is hugely important to our daily lives, and it’s down to all of us to protect our water environments and resources, and use water wisely,” said Councillor Kirkland.

“We all need to think about how we use water now and what changes we can make to ensure there’s enough water for everyone in the future.

“We are incredibly lucky in the Rockhampton Region to have the Fitzroy River Barrage. It provides a level of water security that lots of other places in Australia don’t have.

“However that doesn’t mean we can take it for granted! It was full in February, and now it’s down to 87%. In Rockhampton we actually use 350 litres of water per person, per day, which is the highest in the state.

“Mount Morgan residents – who are doing a brilliant job under the water restrictions as the dam level is low up there – are using just under 300 litres of water per person, per day.

“As we get into the warmer months about 75% of all our water usage is actually outside, so think carefully about how you water your garden and which plants you use.

“We only have what’s in the barrage, so whenever you’re taking a shower, washing dishes, or washing your clothes remember that each drop is precious.

Cr Kirkland said Rockhampton Regional Council would be sharing daily tips on social media this week.

“Every day this week we will post a graphic on our Facebook page sharing a water wise tip.

“For example we use more water in our bathrooms than anywhere else inside the house, with showers accounting for nearly a quarter of household water use.

Could you knock two minutes off your shower time? You could save around 30 litres of water per shower if you do!

“As it gets hotter we will all want plenty of glasses of cold, refreshing water. It makes such a difference to keep a jug of cold water in the fridge – running the tap until it’s cool can waste up to 15 litres a minute! We all know how important and valuable water is – let’s look after it together.”

Now more than ever is the time for everyone to be water wise.

Adelaide resident Bob Nunan, who visited his former hometown of Mount Morgan recently took this photos of the No 7 Dam. Many residents will remember Bob, who is a former employee of Mount Morgan Limited and his wife Joanne who worked in reception at the Mount Morgan Hospital for many years.

Mount Morgan Farewells Loyal Resident Mount Morgan residents said “Goodbye” to a loyal citizen with the passing of Mrs. Jean Jenkins, of 5 Bridge Street on 11 October.

Jean was born in Mount Morgan, received her education at the Central and State High School and after studies accepted an office position at Mount Morgan Limited. Jean married very young in life and settled in Bunbaberg for some years.

Later, Jean returned home to Bridge Street with her young son as a single Mum. She then returned to the office of mount Morgan Limited. Jean was a member of St. Mary’s Church of England and for a number of years was on the management committee for the St Mary’s units.

Her talents and keen interests were in the Arts and Craft Group and the Railway’s Carriage Group.

In later years her health did not allow much mobility so she became one of the trio who has produced the “Pride in Your town” article for the Argus. Jean’s knowledge of Mount Morgan’s history was a terrific asset.

We thank you Jean for your contribution and interest over many years in Mount Morgan. You will be missed my many. Rest in peace.

Movie Review HIS DARK MATERIALS THE GOLDEN COMPASS is a spectacular Academy Award winning movie with truly amazing special effects and a jaw-dropping cast - Sir Ian McKellan, Sam Elliot, Nicole Kidman, Ian McShane, Daniel Craig, Christopher Lee, Tom Courtenay, Freddie Highmore, Kathy Bates, Kristen Scott Thomas and more. This film cost US$180 million to make, an impressive amount of money even today, let alone back then in 2007. It was to be the first from a trilogy of books written by Philip Pullman and published in ‘95, ‘97 and 2000, titled The Golden Compass (alternative title The Northern Lights), The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. They are brilliant science-fiction fantasy adventures set in parallel worlds with elements of retrofuture steampunk, witchery, treachery, science and magic. They are known collectively as HIS DARK MATERALS. Sadly the second and third movie have not, to date at least, been forthcoming... However - and happily even better, HBO & BBC

One have released a lavish, highquality production of HIS DARK MATERALS in the long form which is fantastic because as a series there is more time to flesh out the story properly with more detail and better explanation; as it should be really.

Lord Asriel is a polar explorer, adventurer, researcher and scientist. His research into The Dust has led him to believe in the existence of a multiverse of parallel worlds and he means to prove it beyond doubt once he secures enough funding from his fellow scholars and universities.

More than that, Lord Asriel has a theory that once proven, those parallel worlds could be accessed if he can acquire the right source of energy in sufficient quantities.

This is pure heresy to the ruling Magisterium. The Dust, the multiverse, parallel cities are all serious threats to their power, their government, their control of the people - their very existence.

This heretical scientist must be stopped at all costs.

Tonight though, Uncle Asriel is on a much more desperate mission.

The life of his baby niece, Lyra Belacqua is in mortal danger and he must get her to safety. Despite the flooding everywhere, he has to try to reach Jordan College in Oxford where he can claim the protection of the Scholars for the baby girl. If he can leave her with them she will be safe as their ward. She can grow up within the cloistered walls of an ancient college while receiving the best care and education possible.

Apart from the danger that already threatens Lyra there are also “the Gobblers” out there. They are stealing children from the poor and the Gyptians. Why? What are they doing with these children?

James McAvoy does a terrific job as the young Lord, and the rest of the cast are excellent as well.

The censors have rated this show with an ‘M’ for ‘mature themes and violence’, but really it is made for family viewing and I wouldn’t have gone beyond PG13. You be the judge.

“There is a lot of violence towards children in the world and this gives me an opportunity to help them,” he said.

The annual Change Maker Awards were held online last Friday night and while the store didn’t win, Kelly Webster (Pictured below with employee Drew) operator of the Container Refund Point (CRP) in Mount Morgan, said it was an honour to be a finalist.

“Everyone who were finalists deserved to win, but Barcaldine’s True Value Hardware’s initiative was a worthy winner,” she said.

Mr James Flaherty & the Royal Hotel

‘… Securing employment with the Mt. Morgan Goldmining Company, he [James Flaherty] worked in the top crusher until a serious accident necessitated the amputation of his right arm [in 1896]. He was the first patient of the late Dr. Richards, who had then made a start in the town, and the doctor took a great interest in Mr. Flaherty, who practiced writing with his left hand, with the result that when he was ready to start work he was an adept penman.

The company then gave him a position in its main ticket office which he held for 17 years, being classed as one of the smartest employees engaged in the company’s time office.

Later Mr. Flaherty applied for a hotel license, which was granted [in 1897 by the Mount Morgan Page 12

Licensing Authority, with the abovementioned Dr. Richards as the newly-appointed Licensing Magistrate], and he erected the Royal Hotel, first known as the Champion [on the corner of Dee and Champion Streets] … [The hotel] was leased to Mr. Flaherty’s brother, who stayed there for some years. It was then leased to such well known men in the liquor traffic as the late Mr. Charlie Nash, Mr. Jack Murphy, Mr. Bob Anderson and several others ...

Recently it was pulled down and re-erected at Thangool [near Biloela] …

Mr. Flaherty was a great speculator. He built many homes and sold them … He was always behind any mining speculation …

She was one of many local female licensed victuallers (often widows), including Mrs Sarah Heiser (Hotel Metropole, East and Hall Streets) and Mrs Lucy Emily Moulds (Grand Hotel, Morgan and Central Streets) (see e.g. ‘Licensing Court’, Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton, Qld.: 1878-1954), 2 April 1908). ^ ‘The Royal Hotel was shifted in portions from Mount Morgan to Thangool by train … The contractors worked during May and June and the hotel was opened for business on 2nd July 1930 …’

Pride in Your Town

Congratulations to painter, Shae at the News agency, on his handy work. It certainly looks as though their business will have a new bright look and how that will help brighten up our main street. They deserve our best wishes and local custom, as times are not good for any business in these uncertain times, but let’s hope their efforts are rewarded.

This episode will test all your memories as we are going back many years to a town long gone but great to recall some of those days.

Can you remember when the Mine was working, the hooter blowing the change of shifts etc, the blasting and the noise of the trucks hauling water etc.? Those noises were part of our life at that time and it would be good to hear some of them again now. Remember seeing the men coming off shift carrying their lunch box with the towel thrown over their shoulder?

I wonder how many got arthritis in their shoulders from carrying the damp towel? Days of a good era gone by.

How about the pleasure of your grocer delivering your order to the kitchen table (no virus) which he delivered by horse and cart from his shop? The sugar was in a brown paper bag, while the flour was in a calico bag which was later washed by the housewife and used for many and varied items but it was never thrown out.

some ice for your ice box. Of course your essentials for keeping items cool was your canvas water bag, or the hanging safe with the mesh ends for air circulation and the butter in a clay container with a lip space to add the water. Do you enjoy your refrigerator?

What about receiving your mail?

The postman arriving on his horse and blowing his whistle to let you know you have a letter or if you had received a telegram the lad on his bike would deliver it. Phones were manually operated at the Post Office and sometimes the operators were a wealth of local gossip ----but no one cared. However they were always very helpful in locating the caller required. To make a long distance call two red boxes were situated at the top of the Post Office building steps (now not used) and you would call the operator give her the number you wished and then wait to receive advice to the box where your call would come through. Technology has certainly moved fast since then.

Did you enjoy riding on a steam train to Rockhampton, putting your head out of the window and getting an eye full of soot? Or maybe you were one of the thousands who went to the Linda Picnic. What a day that was at Emu Park! The children devoured too many ice-creams and lollies, got far too sunburnt, Dad enjoyed a glass or too many and poor Mum was exhausted having spent the previous week cooking and preparing all the goodies to enjoy. A very special day in the Mount Morgan calendar.

I want to start by again touching on property security.

We are still seeing some property crime occurring in the town. Please ensure you lock your house and your vehicle at all times. If you own a vacant dwelling in the division then please install security cameras at a minimum. Please review whether you need to Page 14

How many things can you recall of all these that we had in the by- gone days. Some of the many businesses we do not have in these times. Three or four men’s tailor shops; two in Morgan Street and one or two in East Street. Mr. Sid Core the boot repairer man in East Street, the” emporium” of Miss Trot, the Chinese shops of groceries and lollies and John Kelly’s electrical shop, to recall just a few. How about three taxi’s, Bill Watts and “Froggie” Jones jewelry stores, and men’s hairdressing salons.

Then of course the enjoyment of local dances four or five times a week, two picture theatres, ice from the ice works, the Salvation Army band playing every Saturday night in Morgan street, five or six Church services on a Sunday for family devotion, and so our list can go on. Sometimes reflection is pleasant and recalls a life of much simpler things and a society that was not so switched on. Life today with all its modern gimmicks and technology and fast pace has improved many things but perhaps society has paid a price with the loss of some simple pleasures of life. Some of us have been fortunate enough to enjoy the slow pace of yester years as well as the more hectic of today. It is a golden experience to have enjoyed the calmer life style and now experience the fast lane.

MOUNT MORGAN MULTI PURPOSE HEALTH SERVICE NEWS Medical Staff: Our facility has had constant medical coverage over recent months. This has been especially important during Covid-19. We have been very fortunate to have the services of a relieving Senior Medical Officer on a full-time basis over the past few months. Another Doctor also continues to work part-time for our Service.

Medical Recruitment: We currently still have a vacancy for a Permanent Medical Officer and ongoing recruitment efforts have been continuing for this. Advertising has occurred locally, intrastate, interstate, nationally and internationally.

A specialised skill set is required for Doctors wishing to work at our facility and this requires extensive recruitment endeavours. More information on this will be published at a later date.

Pathology Specimens: Our pathology specimens are collected, for transportation to the Laboratory at Rockhampton Hospital, at approximately 2pm Monday – Friday.

October is Breast Cancer Month: Our facility is fundraising for Breast Cancer month. A raffle of “pink” goodies is being conducted. Tickets are $1 each and are available from the Hospital Reception or the Mount Morgan Medical Centre (GP Clinic).

PINK LADIES:As part of Breast Cancer month, we are selling pink “ladies” for $2 each. People are encouraged to purchase one of these, write their personal message on them and place in the lawn in front of the flags near the Hospital entrance.

Community Advisory Network: As most of you will recall, our CAN renewal process was started earlier this year. A survey was conducted and the results tabled at our CAN Meeting. Unfortunately, Covid-19 commitments resulted in a delay with our renewal process. We would like to thank our current CAN members who have agreed to continue in their roles, until the renewal process can be finalised. It is anticipated that the renewal process may be revisited prior to Christmas and new CAN members inducted early in 2021. More details will be provided when available.

Covid-19 Testing: Our Nursing staff has been conducting Covid-19 Testing for our community.

Anyone who is unwell, or who requires a Covid-19 Test is asked to call our Hospital (ph: 4912 5100) during office hours to make an appointment (usually 11am, but prior to 2pm Monday-Friday). Clients are asked a (standard) series of questions over the phone and an appointment time is then offered.

Clients are asked to present to the Ambulance Entrance, as close as possible to their allotted time and to ring the buzzer on the exterior wall. A Nurse will then attend and conduct the testing. Results are generally available the following day.
