and connectedness for students and staff and to help students feel safe, calm, and ready to learn.

“It’s the little things that the dogs do naturally, that are targeted and rewarded, that end up making a big difference in the students’ lives,” Toni said.

“The simple action of patting or having contact with the dog provides them with joy and unconditional love. Just having the dog in the room makes the students feel calm and safe,” she said.

Toni said the dog’s presence provides reassurance when the students were taking academic risks and stepping outside of their learning comfort zones, like when reading out aloud or completing assessments.

They promote a safe and nurturing environment.

K9AA dogs reinforce positive relationships. Students who have experienced trauma often find it easier to build relationships with dogs than with humans.

The dog becomes a bridge - making a trusted connection between themselves and the student which then allows a trusted connection to be made between the student and teacher! K9AA dogs are trained to sense when the students need their help to regulate their emotions.

The unconditional love given by dogs is now being used within the school environment to help calm the student and reduce anxiety as students at Mount Morgan State High School have recently found out.

They usually go to the student, or the student can’t leave the dog’s side. It’s a simple but powerful process that the K9AA dogs excel at.

Canine therapy is starting to be used more and more.

It is not uncommon for therapy and assistance dogs to be seen in hospitals, age care and in courts of law.

Mount Morgan State High School has over the last couple of weeks had a special visitor in the form of Maggie - a K9 Assistance Australia labrador. Maggie is accompanied by Toni Richardson her handler.

The K9 Assistance Australia program in Central Queensland was started by Michelle Stokes (pictured above with Wilson) who saw the need to try something different for her students to increase engagement whilst at the same time providing emotional support.

Michelle has been taking wilson, a two year old German Shepherd, to Park Avenue State School every day for the last two years with great results.

Toni saw how well it was working and followed her lead by getting a K9AA labrador puppy, Maggie.

Maggie is now nine months old and attends three schools. Maggie attends Frenchville State School (two days per week), Mount Morgan State High School (one day per week) and Depot Hill State school (one day per week). The main aim of using these K9AA dogs in schools is to increase wellbeing

TUTU TUESDAY Mount Morgan State High School staff got into the TUTU spirit on Tuesday, 22-022022. This special day was one of the few pallindrome numbers which are few and far between.

Obviously, with that many “twos” it was only natural that the tutus were dragged out or brought for this occasion.

Tutu Day was celebrated in many countries.

Celebrating Gender Equality

On Tuesday, 8 March, the members of Mount Morgan’s Branch of the Queensland Country Women’s Association will hold a morning tea at the No 7 Dam, marking and celebrating International Women’s Day [IWD].

2021 INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

The theme for 2022 is “Gender Equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”.

This day, acknowledges the struggle women have had over the centuries to gain suffrage and a degree of equality. Originally, IWD was celebrated on 23 February, but this was changed due to the widespread adoption of the Gregorian calendar.

In 1908 women in New York marched for shorter hours, better pay and voting rights – to many the cornerstones of equality. The first National Women’s Day was held in 1909. The rest of the world followed suit – Denmark, Austria, Germany and Switzerland (1911) and Russian women, while campaigning for piece, observed their first IWD – they later went on strike in 1917 for “bread and peace”.

It wasn’t until 1975 that the United Nations first celebrated IWD – 21 years later the UN announced its first annual theme – “Celebrating the past, Planning for the Future”. By the Year 2000, the world had moved on and in many spheres, feminism wasn’t a popular topic. This led to the internationalwomensday.com platform being launched to re-energising the day while at the same time celebrating and making visible the achievements of women while continuing the call for accelerating gender parity.

In Australia, International Women’s Day has been informally celebrated since the early 1920s.

The first Australian IWD rally, organised by the Militant Women’s Movement of the Communist Party of Australia, took place on 25 March 1928 in the Sydney Domain. IWD marches in Sydney and Melbourne occurred in 1931.

IWD gained momentum in Australia around the time of the Second World War. Activists such as Jessie Street campaigned for women’s rights as workers, as women at the time were often paid only 54 per cent of men’s wages.

During International Women’s Year in 1975 large marches marked International Women’s Day. The Whitlam government supported a series of events throughout the year including the Women and Politics Conference in September, which examined how women were represented in Australian politics.

Priorities put forward for Federal Budget

Council recently put forward eleven priority projects for consideration in the Federal Budget.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said Council is taking every opportunity to ensure our region’s voice is heard on the national stage.

“Each year the Federal Government calls for submissions as part of the budget setting process,” Mayor Williams said.

“The projects we have submitted are the same eleven we announced as our federal election priorities in November, and which we’ll continue pushing for beyond the election cycle if they remain unfunded.

“These are the projects that Council has identified as some of the most critical for our community, and which we are eager to work with other levels of government to deliver.

“The list includes projects that are absolutely essential - such as support to provide sewerage infrastructure for our community and water security for Mount Morgan.

“It also includes projects that will build on our strengths as a regional community and help support our cattle farmers, unlock more opportunities for agriculture and benefit defence.

“And, of course, there are priorities that will enhance

our social infrastructure. Community-building projects like the redevelopment of the Pilbeam Theatre and the Botanic Gardens and Zoo, which will mean our children see our region as a place to stay because they have the opportunities and they have the lifestyle.

“Ours is still a country that is built on its regions, and as the Federal Government works through the budget process we hope communities like ours and the projects we need to deliver aren’t forgotten.”

The Mount Morgan Tailings Processing & Rehabilitation Project aims to create

The cost is $6.80 per item for Centrelink / DVA card holders, and the price varies item to item for those who do not have any concession card. Cardiac Rehabilitation: The Cardiac Rehabilitation clinic is held on Mondays and Wednesdays. Clients may be referred by their GP, or they may self refer.

Please contact Administration at MMMPHS for a referral form if you wish to self refer. The Cardiac Rehabilitation program includes a Nursing Assessment, an Exercise Physiologist Assessment and if applicable a ten week gym program and five education sessions. This is a tremendous service to have available locally and our Community is encouraged to utilise this if applicable.

The bowls day is also a Memorial Bowls Day for Alex Teeney, who started organising these days in the late 1990’s.

Alex Teeney, was born in Ireland and came to Mount Morgan after the Second World War. During his time in Mount Morgan he contributed to many community organisations - particularly Rotary.

What better person to start a St Paddy’s Day Bowls day than Alex?

Alex epitomised the famous Irish sense of humour.

Sadly he passed in 2012. No matter where he travelled in his life, Alex always remembered Ireland fondly.

The bowls day starts at 9 am. It’s $10 per person and there will be raffles and barbecue lunch as well as prizes for the best dressed.

So, if you are Irish, or even if you are not, come along and support a worthy cause, remember Alex, but most of all have fun.

Bring out your green! St. Patrick’s Day—observed every 17 March—is packed with parades, good luck charms, and all things green. The event started as a religious holiday, but over time it’s become a celebration of Irish culture.

CELEBRATED SAINT St. Patrick might be the patron saint of Ireland—but he didn’t always live in Ireland. Patrick was born in Britain in the fourth century and didn’t arrive in Ireland until he was 16 years old, when he was sent to work in the country. After he arrived, Patrick became interested in Christianity and started teaching others about the religion. He is said to have converted many of the country’s residents to Christians, and now St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on the day Patrick supposedly died.

MYTHS BUSTED St. Patrick was a real person, but some of the traditions associated with him and the holiday are actually myths. For instance, you’ll often see the fourleaf clover depicted on St. Patrick’s Day. However, according to legend, Patrick used a three-leaf clover, or shamrock, as part of his teachings. Even though it's possible for a shamrock to grow a fourth leaf, a four-leaf clover is just considered a symbol of good luck.

Movie Review OLD HENRY “Oh yeah - that guy...Love that guy!” You know the ones. You’ve seen them in a hundred movies, liked and loved their performances, laughed, cheered and cried with them, but most of us never did learn their names.

That used to be Tim Blake Nelson, but not so much anymore. Always creating great support characters in films like DONNIE BRASCO, HAMLET 2000 and THE THIN RED LINE, Tim really got to showcase his amazing talent to the world for the first time in a major way when he teamed up with George Clooney and John Turturro to co-star in Joel and Ethan Coen’s genius reimagining of Homer’s Odyssey, O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU. (If you haven’t seen this brilliant, hilarious film, you must - no education can be complete without it.) Since then Tim Blake Nelson has made around sixty big movies, fifteen television shows, and he’s locked in to another half-dozen at least in the pipeline for the near future.

In fact many animals found throughout Europe and North America don’t live on the island of Ireland—the ocean keeps the critters away.

GOING GREEN The fact that Ireland is an island—as well as green with leafy trees and grassy hills—means that the nation is sometimes called the Emerald Isle. But the colour that people originally associated with St. Patrick was blue! (Some ancient Irish flags even sport this colour.) Green was finally introduced to St. Patrick’s Day festivities in the 18th century, when the shamrock (which is, of course, green) became a national symbol. Because of the shamrock’s Page 14

VET NEWS Cats and Grooming

Whilst cats are pretty good at taking care of themselves, many domesticated felines still require regular beauty services from their human family members!

Grooming Most cats benefit from a light brushing session twiceweekly to help remove loose hairs, particularly during seasonal changes when they can shed more fur.

However, long-haired, elderly or obese cats may require daily grooming assistance to prevent mats, particularly around their bellies, bottoms, tails and legs. This involves a slicker brush or de-shedding tool to remove loose hairs, as well as careful combing to remove knots. Any mats should be trimmed off with pet-safe electric clippers rather than scissors.

Ask our team for help if you’re having trouble keeping your fluffy cat sufficiently groomed. In these cases, we may discuss a twice-yearly “lion clip” for them, which will minimise any home grooming requirements (and looks adorable). This is performed under light to moderate sedation to prevent any undue stress.

Claw trimming Largely indoors or elderly cats will generally require claw trimming every two-to-three months to prevent painful claw overgrowth. If you’re unsure how to safely trim your cat’s claws without hurting them, our friendly nursing team can provide you with a demonstration. It can also help to check out this general claw trimming advice on the International Cat Care website.

Depending on your cat’s temperament, we recommend either distraction with a tasty lickable treat pouch or gentle restraint by wrapping them in a thick blanket (called a “purrito!”) to peacefully achieve claw trimming. If your cat is uncooperative, give our team a call to discuss the best option for your pet (usually a combination of gentle sedation and claw trimming by our experienced staff).

With your assistance, your cat will be looking “purrfectly” groomed in no time!

The Golden Mount Festival Association, Mount Morgan Inc would like to thank Eric Stevenson from Mount Morgan Outdoors for donating a metal detector for a raffle. Tickets will be on sale in the next couple of days.
