Paegan Lemire (pictured left) was named Dux of Mount Morgan State High School winning the Tomky’s Memorial Award at the annual Awards Night held on Tuesday, 25 October at the Mount Morgan School of Arts.

Paegan was also awarded Top Senior Science, Biology and English Student.

“If you’re unable to attend the information session, don’t worry, you can still have your say on the pool redevelopment by completing a survey to share your thoughts.

"The aim of the survey is to help us capture the community’s feedback so we can gain an understanding of what they want before we progress to the final design stage.

"Community members can complete the survey online, drop into the Mount Morgan Customer Service Centre and complete a hard copy, or attend the community information session.

MOUNT MORGAN CITIZEN’S CLUB Congratulations - Mount Morgan Citizens Club would like to congratulate the Mount Morgan 5th Lighthorse Regiment and thank Mount Morgan RSL Sub-Branch for allowing us the honour to witness and be involved in their celebratory photos, after their glorious win of the QMI Cup. Well done for making Mount Morgan proud, and we extend our utmost respect for all their endeavours.

On Thursday, 3 November the Mount Morgan Rotary club hosted three students from the Mount Morgan High School who had attended a school camp on North Keppel Island in July.

A total of 32 students and the school Guidance Officer Raelene Robinson, who also attended the Rotary meeting, spent three very busy days at the camp which focussed on personal development, team building, local history, and developing friendships.

The students, Grace Schulz, Mystique Lemire, and Axle Royes, each gave a short presentation to the club members on what they gained from the experience.

Each student said they had been surprised at how much they got out of the program, such as the benefits of working as a team, self-confidence, strengthening existing relationships, making new friendships and overcoming fears. They also appreciated learning about the original island inhabitants and some of natures creatures observed in the water and on the island.

Guidance Officer Raelene was able to tell the club members that the students were judged to be the tidiest group to camp at the Island and it was a real pleasure to be involved with this particular group, and see the improvement and development in the students as a result of their involvement in the activities.

Rotary Club President Craig Edmonston said that the presentations by the students were quite impressive.

The Rotary club provides funding to the program and club members believe this is a very worthy community project to be involved in.

“It was simply a delight to see such a positive result for the members, and the students easily convinced the members that they should continue supporting the program,” President Craig said.

DANCE –Coming up on Saturday, 26 November we will be holding a MINER’S BUSH DANCE, continuing our renovation fundraising efforts for The Soldier’s Rooms. Live music will be supplied by Capricornia Dance Exchange, with a lucky door prize, and some fantastic raffle prizes, including an artwork generously donated by renowned local Artist, Nicholai von Tonslaman. The bar will be operating, and light snacks and refreshments are available. Massive thank you to all who supported our fundraising Dance held last month. We had a great turnout despite lots of Halloween activities going on around town and raised some well needed dollars for continued restoration of the Hall. A huge shoutout to the boundless spirit of our fundraising team for all their efforts.

RENO’S - Well it certainly has been a busy year, with fundraising in full swing, maintenance and improvements ongoing, and lots planned for 2023.

If you have a special skill, are handy on the tools or just want the camaraderie of working with a fun bunch of people with the common goal of preserving the Mounts history and community service, why not join up. Part of preservation is collating historical information, as well as documenting people’s personal experiences and events that have shaped The Soldiers Rooms, so if manual labour is not your thing, we have opportunities for all capabilities or to share your story.

MOUNT MORGAN ARTS PRECINCT – Handover is set for 15 November! Exciting times, with many thanks to Rockhampton Regional Council for their ongoing assistance navigating this journey. You may see some sweet miniature buildings popping up around the place for donations. The end of October and beginning of November is always a busy time in Mount Morgan and this year is running true to form with a range of activities being held over the last weekend in October and the first day of November.

The busy weekend started off with “Pink Night” at the Grand Hotel, where brave souls had their heads or beards shaved to raise funds for Cancer. This evening has become an event with almost $3000 being raised for Cancer.

The Halloween Walk with a bumper turnout of mums, dads, children and pets. Organised by Donna Anderson and crew, this walk was one of the biggest in recent times. Even the Rainbow Cafe and Wee Doo Deliver got into the “spirit” with decorations and enough sugar to keep the kids awake for days on end.

LIBRARY NEWS Remembrance Day On the eleventh of November we commemorate all who have fallen during war and conflict with Remembrance Day. One Mount Morgan resident who fought during World War I is Major Roderic Stanley Dallas. Roderic Dallas attended school in Mount Morgan and worked for the assay office of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Co. He was fascinated by aeroplanes and even designed his own seaplane before travelling to England to become an airman.

Roderic Dallas was made a Major in the Royal Air Force in 1918 and sadly perished in battle the same year. If you would like to read more about the life of Major Roderic Stanley Dallas a biography is available from Rockhampton Regional Libraries. Australian hawk over the Western Front by Adrian Hellwig was published in 2006 and can be placed on hold to borrow through any Rockhampton Regional Library.

By reading about the past we can better understand our present. Many people enjoy reading about the inventions and equipment used in battles of previous wars. Need help finding history books about the World Wars? World War I and World War II books can be found in the non-fiction section of the library at the dewey call number of 940. Ask library staff to help locate other great resources on weapons and warfare as well as military history in the collection.

DEE RIVER OLDIES At our October Morning Tea, members had a chance to see some photos projected on the history of Mount Morgan. These were a collection of photos taken through the years showing the town and how it has grown over time. Many photos brought back memories and showed the newer members what our town was like.

Movie Review 1883 In YELLOWSTONE, John Dutton is a sixth-generation homesteader, devoted father and the patriarch of a volatile, complicated, powerful family 0f ranchers. He controls the largest contiguous ranch in The United States, operating in a corrupt world where he must defend his property from politicians who are compromised by influential oil and lumber corporations, land grabs by heartless and amoral developers seeking to make billions, and constant conflict with the others surrounding his borders - an expanding town, an Indian Reservation, America’s first national park... All of this amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds and hardearned respect - but John Dutton (Kevin Costner) is not alone. By his side and watching his back is his ex-navy seal younger son Kayce; his brilliant but emotionally catastrophic daughter, the lovely, ruthless viper Beth; his notentirely-trustworthy older son, attorney and aspiring politician, Jamie; and his fiercely loyal righthand-man and enforcer, Rip (Cole Hauser) who was taken in by John Dutton as a runaway boy. The legacy John Dutton is protecting and would surely die for is Yellowstone Ranch, a legacy built

from the foundations laid down by his great-grandfather, Jim Dutton.

In 1883 Jim Dutton (Tim McGraw), his wife, daughter and son leave the post-civil-war poverty and sickness of Tennessee behind and head west in search of a new and better life. After every major war there is a ‘wild’ period of violence and crime as young men who have been trained to kill return to civilization to find their circumstances much diminished.

Many no longer fit in, can’t get what they want and need, so they simply decide to take it, often with violence because now they know how. WW1, WW2; and the same is true for The Civil War in the USA - that’s how the ‘Wild West’ began. So, the trail west was wild, dangerous and overrun with bandits.

Jim was a captain in the Confederate States Army (The Grey). A highly skilled leader and combatant, Dutton was wounded, captured and imprisoned in a Union (The Blue) prisoner-of-war camp for years. Hardened by his experiences he now cares little for anyone else but his family who are everything to him.

Below the Troop commemorate Beersheba Day at ANZAC Park on Sunday, 30 October. The Mount Morgan Troop were granted Freedom of the Town of Mount Morgan in 1996. The battle of Beersheba took place on 31 October 1917 as part of the wider British offensive collectively known as the third Battle of Gaza. The final phase of this all day battle was the famous mounted charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade. Commencing at dusk, members of the brigade stormed through the Turkish defences and seized the strategic town of Beersheba.

What became of the Lundager Girls?

Else

The eldest sister, Else (‘Elsie’), studied dressmaking at the Mount Morgan Technical College in the early 1900s. She later worked in retail, probably in a dressmaking and garment cutting role at one of the draperies in Morgan Street, such as Stewarts, D. D. O’Connell or Woods & Co. Mr and Mrs J. H. Lundager moved from Mount Morgan to Gordon on Sydney’s North Shore in about 1920. Elsie and her sister, Hulda, followed them. After their parents died, the sisters moved to the nearby harbourside suburb of Mosman. Never forgetting their Mount Morgan heritage, the sisters attended a ‘Back-toMount Morgan’ celebration with other former Mount Morganites in Sydney in 1950: ‘… the period at the dinner table extended to about two and a half hours and we all expected the neighbours to complain at the laughter, when, during reminiscences of Mt Morgan days, old "attachments" were recalled…’ (‘Mt Morganites in Sydney’, Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton, Qld: 1878-1954), 31 March 1950).

Elsie remained in Mosman for the rest of her life and never married.

She passed away in 1953 (aged 70).

Concluding the series of the Lundager sisters, some information about their later lives seemed apt. While the four sisters followed different paths, they shared a strong bond with each other. This connection was fostered during their formative years in Mount Morgan with the support of their parents and community.

Best remembered as the subject of her father’s well-known portrait of the little Mount Morgan girl with her cat and doll from about 1894, Hulda became a Mount Morgan music teacher: ‘Miss Hulda Lundager, Dee Street, Mount Morgan, resumes tuition, pianoforte and theory on Monday 26th January …’ (‘Professional’, Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton, Qld: 1878-1954), 22 and 23 January 1914).

Hulda went on to study nursing and qualified as an obstetric nurse in Sydney in 1924. She enjoyed a long career.

It appears that Hulda, who remained single, moved from Mosman to Ipswich in her later years to be close to her only remaining sibling, Mary. She died in Ipswich in 1970 at the age of 82, outliving her sisters.

Mary Mary was a teacher at public schools in Mount Morgan, Toowoomba and Brisbane. However, her career was cut short in 1927 (aged 34) because she was required to resign before she married (which was generally the case for women in those days).

Mary died in Ipswich in 1968 (aged 74). She was survived by her husband, John Hamilton Craies (1894-1979), and daughter, Helene Alma. Her daughter was J. H. Lundager’s only grandchild, who passed away in Ipswich in 2018 (aged 89).

Alma Alma also became a Queensland public school teacher. She taught in Mount Morgan, Townsville, Boonah and Brisbane.

Alma died prematurely in Brisbane in 1953 (aged 55), the same year her eldest sister passed away.

She never married.
