This edition we leave out history tales and go more light hearted. This article will be remembered by the older generation but for our youth a tale of yesteryears trials. It is remembering Mom’s Clothes Line. The clothes line was wire extended from one corner post of the yard to another post opposite. One of the very special items was the wooden prop that used to push the clothes line up so the sheets, pants etc did not brush on the ground and get dirty. At times men would go around in trucks selling props as they were an absolute necessity on wash day. It was generally one of the children’s jobs to go with a clean rag and wash and wipe the wire line so as all dust etc was cleaned off before hanging. There were strict rules on how the washing was to be placed on the clothes line and here are a few. Socks by the toes not the top and pants by bottom cuffs not the waistband. You had to hang whites with whites and to be hung out first. Monday was wash day! Never hang clothes on Sunday for Heaven’s sake! Sheets and towels to be on outside lines so your ‘‘unmentionables’’ could be hidden from busybodies. Clothes off the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the basket ready to be ironed. Following is a poem that describes the messages that could be obtained by what was hanging on the clothes line. No need for newspapers and television in those bygone years. A clothes line was a news forecast, to neighbours passing by, There were no secrets you could keep, when clothes were hung to dry. It also was a friendly link, for neighbours always knew If company had stopped on by, to spend a night or two. For then you’d see the “fancy sheets’’, and towels upon the line, You’d see the ‘‘Company table cloths’’ with intricate designs. The lines announced a baby’s birth from folk who lived inside, As brand new infant clothes were hung so carefully with pride. It also said ‘‘On vacation now’’ when lines hung limp and bare. It told ‘‘We’re back! When full lines sagged with not an inch to spare. New folks in town were scorned upon if wash was dingy and gray, As neighbours carefully raised their brows and looked the other way. But clotheslines now are of the past for dryers make work much less, Now what goes on inside the house is anybody’s guess! I really miss that way of life, it was a friendly sign When neighbours knew each other best...by what hung on the line. It does bring back memories, does it not?

Champion Gardeners Front page article continued - full story Terry and Dian Kelleher of Mount Morgan have taken out the Champion Garden of the Mount Morgan and South District along with two encouragement awards at the 2013 Betascapes Spring Garden Spectacular. Congratulations also goes to W & D Stacey of Mount Morgan who took out an Encouragement Award for Best Use of Native Plants for the Rockhampton Region. Champion Gardeners’ win very encouraging Congratulations to Terry and Dian Kelleher who scooped up a Champion award along with two encouragement awards in the recently announced 2013 Betascapes Spring Garden Spectacular. Rockhampton Regional Council’s premier garden competition ran for two months with judges critiquing gardens between Monday 2 September and Friday 6 September 2013. The winners, including Terry and Dian, were awarded their $1000 voucher on Saturday 14 September at the Botanic Gardens Tearooms. “We were really surprised to win and we only entered the competition after a few friends said we should,” Dian said. “Win or loose, we just really wanted our garden to be a peaceful and restful place for our friends and family – we’ve even had a few people just pop in, sit down and take a break relaxing in the front yard!” Dian and Terry have a strong passion for gardening and are true green thumbs, spending every day pottering around. “We love gardening and spend anywhere from an hour to four hours a day, even weekends!” Dian said.

“It’s been seven years of building up literally loads of soil from rock and clay and now we’re really excited to have our favourite roses and wisterias blooming beautifully.” Council’s Parks and Recreation Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the Kelleher’s had a wonderful garden which they should be very proud of. “Their garden is very relaxing and colourful and looks really lovely from the street,” Cr Rutherford said. “I can see why the judges selected their garden as Champion for Mount Morgan along with their two encouragement awards for Best Flower Garden and Best Home Garden on town water. “Local residents should take a stroll past and admire its beauty and they’ll see Terry and Dian’s hard work as talented gardeners.” You can view Terry and Dian Kelleher’s garden at 23 Crown Street, Mount Morgan.

The grass is looking greener for the Mount Morgan Golf Club

The Mount Morgan Golf Club will be seeing some exciting changes in the upcoming weeks, thanks to an impressive donation from the IGA, Mount Morgan. A sum of $5,000 was presented to the local club at a special presentation on Saturday, September 14. The funds have been donated in aim of assisting the local group rebuild after extensive damage to the club during the January flood event. The sum will be used to rebuild one of the club’s damaged golf cart bridges, as well as repairs to their car park and further repairs throughout the club. The funds were supplied as part of the IGA Community Chest, which saw a total of $157,000 raised to support the recent spate of natural disasters across Australia. These funds are currently being donating to Queensland flood affected community groups, with the Mount Morgan Golf Club chosen as one of the recipients. Discussing the donations, Brett Bugg, Retail State Chairman for Queensland and Northern NSW said: “As IGA stores are independently owned and operated, we are happy to still be supporting those communities that are rebuilding their lives after these devastating disasters which hit the state hard for the second time.

“The IGA Community Chest donations will be a real help to those on the ground that are still picking up the pieces, some who unfortunately haven’t been covered by insurance.” IGA Mount Morgan owner, Hugh McGilvray said the local team were excited to play a part in this assistance. “IGA has been supporting the recovery effort since day one and has assisted victims in the centre of the devastation in any way we can. “We’ve been amazed at the response to our efforts – it’s very rewarding to see what a positive impact we have been able to make on people’s lives,” Hugh added. The Community Chest initiative is a program that operates all year in IGA supermarkets across Australia. A percentage of sales are given back to the community when customers purchase an IGA branded product. Community Chest and other associated IGA community programs have raised more than $60 million nationally since its inception, with more than 7,000 recipients, including schools, community groups, charities, sports clubs and other local organisations throughout Australia. Parks and Recreation Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said it was important that the local community were fully informed of the outcome from the consultation process and had an opportunity to consider options before a final decision is bought down by Council. “I want to ensure we do everything possible and exhaust all avenues before Council makes a final decision on the Caretaker’s Cottage,” Cr Rutherford said. “I’m going to speak to those community members who are passionate about the Cottage staying and discuss the feasibility of a number of options which were raised during the consultation period. “I would like to invite anyone who is interested in the future of the Cottage to attend a town meeting on Wednesday 2 October so that we can discuss the ideas in more detail.” Council has previously held a town meeting and distributed two different surveys to capture the community’s thoughts and ideas going forward. “We needed to let the community know the current state of the Cottage and to gauge their views on what to do with it,” Cr Rutherford said. “In terms of the future direction for the cottage, 59% of survey respondents requested that the building be removed and 41% of respondents requested that the building be restored. By Heather Quarry Coming into this world in a quaint booming mining town has many advantages. The advantages are heightened when ninety years later you can still say you love the place where you were born. Heather Maxine Purdie was born at home in Byrnes Parade, Mount Morgan on the 17th of July 1923. With four brothers and one sister there was always plenty to do around the Mount and boredom was never an issue. She attended Mount Morgan State School then the Technical College (now the local High School). Her dad was an MC at the local dances and was strongly involved with the Australian Labor party. Her mum loved sewing and fancywork. After her mum passed away Heather and her sister found poetry that her mum had written but never did anything with. Heather also loves writing poetry and says it keeps her mind active. Growing up, Heather loved the outdoors. The children around Walter Hall used to get together and walk for miles. They would often walk to the mine site but knew they were never allowed to go inside for safety reasons. Scaling trees and crossing the Number Seven Dam wall was a regular occurrence. Spending time together with her brothers and friends outside was always enjoyed by Heather. She preferred it then and still does prefer being around natural people that are down to earth and honest. Being surrounded by nature always gives her something to smile about. At school Heather loved English. “I wasn’t a lover of Maths at all” she jokes when asked about her favourite school memories. “I loved all sports but I could never run very hard” she chuckled. Overhead and basketball were two sporting activities she remembers enjoying. In later years she played cricko (like cricket but designed for females) and then got involved in lawn bowls until an injury prevented her from continuing. Heather received a medallion 2 days before her ninetieth birthday that she shows with pride when telling how she loved lawn bowls. Apart from a few years in Brisbane (moved because her fiancé at the time moved there with his family), Heather states very strongly “I was born in Mount Morgan, went to school and worked in Mount Morgan, I married in Mount Morgan and I will die in Mount Morgan.”Heather and her fiancé Arthur Harold Purdie, who was born just outside Rockhampton, came back from Brisbane and married at the Presbyterian Church in the Mount. Heather wore a long white laced wedding gown and had roses in her bouquet. “I love roses. My favourite flowers.” Her sister was bridesmaid and one of Arthur’s brothers was the best man. Heather has one daughter. She would have loved more children but it wasn’t possible. She says with pride how she loves her daughter, son-in-law, grandchildren and great grand children. Her daughter and son-in-law cook meals for Heather. Her favourite food is tripe but she doesn’t have it anymore because she says people don’t like cooking it. She says her brother in law, Bob cooks tripe perfectly.“It has to be cooked properly” she states strongly.“Next to tripe I love stews. You can’t beat a good stew.” For breakfast Heather loves eggs on toast. Employment for Heather has always been office based. She has worked as a Clerk in various places around Mount Morgan and in Brisbane.

Her first job was in Gallieh’s Drapery Store in Morgan Street. Her boss was going to open another shop but the big fires hit the town at that time and Heather says “it burnt me out of a job.” She also went to the post office when the big exchange was there and was employed at the Mount Morgan Hospital which involved admitting and discharging patients. “I loved it there.” One of Heather’s passions was to become a nurse but it was a position she never got the chance to undertake. Health wise Heather has proved to be a true survivor. She was diagnosed with Lymphedema when her daughter was in high school. All these years later she is still vibrant and tries not to let it get her down. She moved into a unit in John Cani and says she felt contented and really at home as soon as she walked through the door. Having her independence is very important to Heather and she loves the people around her. Playing the piano was one of her loves but she couldn’t take her piano to the unit with her so it now lives in her daughter’s home. “My fingers ache since I’ve not been playing the piano but I still manage to do most of the things I want to. I still love playing cards with friends.” Recently, Heather had her ninetieth birthday and received eighteen birthday cards and two birthday cakes to celebrate her milestone, as well as many birthday wishes sent across the Internet. She collects pigs “not live ones” and clocks, and is very proud of her collection. Her favourite colours are red and pink. Country and Western is her favourite music. Her favourite drinks are water and weak tea with no sugar. Heather held a learners permit but never drove a car. There were always buses or trams when she was in Brisbane, and in the Mount, everything was in walking distance. She prefers the compassion and respect that used to be around years ago that doesn’t seem so apparent these days and likes people to look her in the eyes when they speak to her. Her mum and dad always looked people straight in the eyes when speaking. One had blue eyes and one had brown eyes. Honesty is something she believes should be utmost with people. She is still an outspoken woman but doesn’t like nasty tones when people speak. Her favourite saying is “Looks are only skin deep and ugliness to the bone” and believes a person’s life is what they make it.

This issue of the Argus brings you a new inclusion – “News from the Mount Morgan Museum”. The Museum team will regularly bring you news and updates from the local Museum as well as an interesting snippet relating to a piece found in one of the building’s impressive exhibits.

“Post”mortem:

Heading through the Museum, in the Town Section of Gallery 2, a portion of a white post can be found attached to the gallery wall. On first glance, this post is seemingly plain, though when reading its accompanying information piece, it’s evident that it is far from ordinary… The story behind this post: In 1906 large square posts were erected at certain street corners in the centre of Mount Morgan. To these posts were tacked the local funeral notices. The posts were painted white and were kept strictly for this use. Over the years the posts become studded with tacks (as can be seen in the post exhibited) as local legend claimed that it was unlucky to remove the tacks. The custom of tacking funeral notices to these posts continued for a number of years. You can learn more about this interesting display, as well as many others in the Museum.

Cemetery research:

We have had a dedicated research team, looking into the cemetery plots. We are currently looking into a number which are unmarked and would greatly appreciate any assistance with this. If you are caring for an unmarked grave, and would like to see these details included in our research, please contact the Museum.

Interested in local history?:

The Mount Morgan Historical Museum is looking for new members for the new financial year! There are no obligations to work, simply sign up and support your local town museum. Each member receives a membership card for the year, with one free admission to the Museum upon signing up. For more information, stop in at the Mount Morgan Museum: 87 Morgan Street or phone 4938 2122.

Hi Argus readers, Well, we are now up to issue 19 of the Argus – with only six issues left for the whole year! If you have an event coming up between now and the end of the year, please feel free to let us know. You can let us know about your event and/or pass on an inclusion or story idea for an upcoming issue by either: emailing our office: mmpad@bigpond.com/ stopping in: 61 Morgan Street, Mount Morgan or finding us on facebook: Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Incorporated. Along with the Argus, we have also been busy of late with a number of community projects. Here is an update on a couple currently underway… Mount Morgan’s History – for junior readers: One of the projects for MMPAD over the past months has been the development of a children’s book detailing Mount Morgan’s history. Our project officer, Camille Steinberger has recently completed the research and compilation of the book’s draft and, thanks to funding received from RADF, this has now also been professionally edited. The draft is a total of ten chapters and includes details of the area before it was “Mount Morgan”, the discovery of Ironstone Mountain, the establishment of the township, the mine and its changes and eventual closure. Along with factual writing, the content also includes “Did you Know”, “Fast Facts”, and “Meet a Local” – which present facts on a particular topic, from current Mount Morgan residents. With the first stage of this project all wrapped up, we are now onto the second stage – which includes the illustrations and type setting. We are currently looking into possible funding opportunities to assist this stage, and look forward to providing you further details in the near future. A new stage curtain for the School of Arts: Speaking of grant funding, MMPAD has also been working with staff of the State High School in seeing a new customised house curtain acquired for the School of Arts Hall stage. This will see an impressive addition to the refurbishments that took place at the area in 2011 and will allow the stage to be used to its full capacity. We are very pleased to announce that more than half of the required sum has successfully been sought by a number of local community groups, as well as Stanwell Corporation. We are currently awaiting news on our final grant application for this project. Want to stay up to date on all of MMPAD’s projects?: You can stay up to date with all of the happenings at MMPAD by collecting a copy of our regular project reports. These reports are compiled by our Project Officer and provide detail into our past, present and proposed projects. You can collect a copy of the latest report from our office or pass on your details for an electronic version.

Garlic, Lemon & Chilli Prawns

Help for my husband A poem by Alma Graham My husband’s not as young as he was He’ll never see 70 again Some things he has to do can become A bit of a strain His brain says “I can do it,” but his body says “no so,” “At your age you should put on the breaks And take it a little bit slow” But he’s always in the middle of it When there’s something to be done He strives on doing everything and looks as though it’s fun

This my take on a prawn dish I tried many years ago in a Asian Restaurant in Melbourne, it is as nice as a part of an Asian feast or as a main meal. It’s quick and very tasty, hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Mountain Mick Ingredients: 500g green prawns peeled 2 med onion thinly sliced 1 tblsp oil 3 tblsp of crushed garlic 1 tblsp hot chilli flakes (you can use less, yes you leave it out if you don’t like chilli) ¼ cup parsley flake (add to stock) 2 tblsp light soya sauce 1 tblsp sweet paprika 1 tblsp sugar salt & pepper to taste ¼ cup spoon lemon juice 500ml stock (I use chicken) 1 heap tblsp of cornflour in water as a paste for thicken. 500g Mixed Asian Frozen Vegies (your choice)

From now on things will be better And he can take it a bit slower One thing he has wanted for many a year, He now has a ride on mower The smile on his face is broad and wide , So much pleasure it did give But now he has built an extension to one of his sheds To give it somewhere to live Guess what now he’s made a little trailer for the mower to tow He hooks it up, chucks in the chainsaw and he’s ready to go Down our lane to some fallen trees before he thinks of turning Because we need lots of firewood to keep the home fires burning Did I say he should be slowing dow? I must be a bit of a dill I should know him well enough by now To know he never will Have you written a poem or short story that you’d like to see featured in our “Creative Contributions”? Email: mmpad@bigpond.com

Method: Firstly cook off onion thinly sliced. Once it starts to brown add prawns, cook for 2 two minutes. Now add garlic, chilli, paprika & sugar. Stir on high heat until shrimp starts to turn pinky/orange colour then add lemon juice and soya sauce. Cook for a minute or two. Add hot stock bring to boil. Now add cornflour paste to thicken the sauce. Cook only until sauce becomes clear now add pre-cooked Asian vegies (I heat them for 10 minutes in microwave) now add little salt and black pepper to taste Serve with noodles and a ice cold drink, your choice somethink not to sharp. ...Enjoy Mick.

This issue of the Argus we bring you an inclusion from a Rockhampton resident, Mr James Lindley. A big thanks to James for sharing his story with us, and the interesting connection he and his family have with the local area. James Robert Dee Lindley was born under a bullock wagon on the banks of the Dee River near Mount Morgan in 1911. Hence the “Dee” in his name.

The Dee River, winding through Mount Morgan, was once lined with a number of Mount Morgan’s famous Swinging Bridges.

My sister, Joan Jacobsen who lives on James Street, has a close attachment to Mount Morgan if only for that reason. Our father told us that his parents did not quite make it to medical attention before he decided to arrive.

Our next installment of Photo Flashbacks presents the former Tipperary Point Suspension Bridge during the 1970s.

How brave and resourceful those old bush people must have been to take such a momentous happening in their stride. Joan and I often wonder whether they continued on to hospital after the birth, or returned to Dundee. Perhaps one day we might discover if any record of admittance to Mt. Morgan hospital is recorded for the 7th. September, 1911. Older Mount Morgan people will remember the state of the roads at that time, or even fifty years ago, and I am at a loss to understand how a very pregnant young woman, carrying her first child, was so resilient to the rough passage of the steel bullock wagon wheels over those unsealed roads.

This Bridge was one of six original suspension bridges in the local area, built in the late 19th Century. Each bridge was constructed to provide pedestrians easy access to the mine and the township. The Tipperary Bridge in particular provided easy access for many miners in the immediate area; heading to and from the Mount Morgan Mine from this section of town. It also provided access for many townsfolk heading from Tipperary to Red Hill. A very big thanks to Rockhampton resident, Lionel Reeves for supplying this photo.

Father’s Day this year, Joan and I visited the Dee River and, although we had no idea where the birth took place, we were astounded by the roughness of the country. During our visit, a beautiful old hotel caught our eye and the plaque on the wall explained that an air-raid warden manned the ‘bell tower’ during the Second World War. It makes us wonder if there are any other stories of hardship, or just plain Australian ‘guts’, that could be told by those tough old Mount Morgan people who are still with us. Mount Morgan Rail Bridge Update The Mount Morgan Rail Bridge was badly damaged early this year in the January/February rain event after a car and a large tree hit the main pillars of the bridge. Rockhampton Regional Council has carried out preliminary investigations into the damage sustained and the structural integrity of the bridge. As a result, engineering consultants were engaged to

investigate options on how to successfully stabilise the bridge and a report is being developed. At this stage, Council has been advised not to access the bridge due to the identified safety concerns and risks associated with its stability and maintenance. A more comprehensive report will be delivered to the continuing Council meeting in November and the community will be provided updates after that meeting.
