REGIONAL FORUM MEET ON THE MOUNT Mount Morgan played host to the seventh round of Central Queensland Regional Forum meetings on Monday, 27 September.

The forum meetings are held at different venues within the Central Queensland Region.

Forum members and invited guests had

the opportunity to hear a regional update from Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor, Tony Williams, a Mount Morgan mine site presentation from Heritage Minerals and a presentation about applying for grants. Tourism, agriculture, infrastructure, and Queensland’s ongoing economic

recovery will be the focus for the seventh round of Regional Community Forums on Monday 27 September.

Regional Community Forums are held periodically across locations in seven regional areas, hosted by local MPs and attended by Cabinet Ministers and invited community representatives.

“This round – the third for 2021 – will be an opportunity to map a path forward, putting plans into action and growing regional economies to continue to deliver good, secure jobs, Indigenous groups, and exservice organisations,” she said.

ROAD RUNNERS GO OFF-ROAD Rockhampton’s Road Runners went off-road on Sunday, 26 September when they held their first trail run on the Mount Morgan Mountain Bike and Walking Trails.

There were three runs - 3 km, 10 km and 20 km with more than 80 competitors competing across the three distances. Club President, Craig Elaurant was happy with the number of participants in what was the first event to be held in Mount Morgan.

“We normally get about 50 runners for a road run, but when we go off-road, the numbers increase,” he said.

He said he hoped that this would become an annual

event. While trophies were being awarded for today’s run, competitors would also be awarded points which go towards their yearly tallies.

“The trails are great,” Craig said.

Some of the runners got a little lost which meant their 20 km run was actually over 21 km.

DUST FLIES IN MOUNT MORGAN A busy, action-packed weekend in Mount Morgan certainly set the dust flying.

The weekend included a two-day Enduro held by the Capricorn Dirt Riders Club on Fernvale (off Golf Links Road) and the Mount Morgan Rodeo Association’s Junior Rodeo.

Both nominations and spectators were down on the 2020 Junior Rodeo, but there was still plenty of action from the bulls, barrels and broncs.

Local Barrel Racer, Lily Passmore (right) claimed the Under 11 Junior Barrel Race buckle and was the only Mount Morgan competitor to claim a first place. Full results and more photos in the next edition of the Mount Morgan Argus.

The Enduro saw just over 50 competitors take to the track in both Junior and Senior classes.

While the numbers were good, the Capricorn Dirt Riders Club’s Enduro normally attracts over this number with competitors coming from throughout Australia for the event.

Club spokesperson, Allan Gadsby said the reduction in numbers was due to Covid lockdown. However, despite these lockdowns, the twoday event managed to attract international competitor, Adam Giles. The club boasts over 350 riders that compete in the various events held at other tracks around the region.

A SPECIAL WATTLE DAY THANK YOU Each year at the Wattle Day Festival, Mount Morgan locals and visitors have had the opportunity to take home a Mount Morgan Wattle seedling. This has been made possible by Murray and Diane Hare and the Golden Mount Nursery. Growing these seedlings, especially during the dry times is no small feat. IT STARTED WITH A TABLE

It all started with a small table between the old Uniting Church and the hall a long time ago.

Helen Stratford asked Daphne and Brian Kennedy to try and improve the service of the Blue Care Car in Mount Morgan as it only came two or three times a week.

Due to the large elderly population in the town Daphne and Brian decided to sell second-hand items that people donated to raise money.

Everything purchased at the Trash and Treasure on Friday between 8.30 am and 12 noon and first Saturday of the month between 8.00 am and 12 noon goes to help improve the quality of life for the Mount Morgan community.

Clean and reusable donations are always welcome at Blue Care. These donations are quickly sorted and sold.

Daphne was President and Secretary and Mrs Hess was a willing helper and Jayne Farrell, in later years was Treasurer for a number of years.

Neil Morgenstern would sell his wares as well and give a large donation towards the cause.

Over the years the Blue Care service has improved a great deal and the community have reaped the rewards of the dedication of the willing volunteers.

The one small table has now become three separate areas of Hardware, clothing, shoes and household items.

The committee at the present time who help out are Marion Batchelor (President), Heather Barker (Secretary) and Margaret Hall (Treasurer).

Alan is the handyman and is only too willing to make improvements when the ladies ask.

SHORT FILM RECALLS THE TRAGEDY OF THE “MOUNT WHEELER” (GAI-I) MASSACRE A nine minute short film starring local actor Clint Lennox (pictured below during production) will screen at the Melboune Underground Film Festival

in October. In “Curlew” Clint plays “Donald” a soldier who is haunted by the events that took place during the Mount Wheeler Massacre in the early 1900’s where more than 300 Darumbal people were killed by the Native Police Inspector Frederick Wheeler by forcing them off the cliff. The mountain is located between Rockhampton and Yeppoon and was handed back to the Darumbal People in 2007. In 2018, the mountain’s name was changed to Gai-iafter an indigenous warrior. This name-change was granted after lobbying by the Darumbal people.

Mount Jim Crow’s name was changed to Baga - also an indigenous warrior.

Clint, along with fellow actors Tegan Devine, Connor French and Josiah Taylor recount this time of tragedy.

The film was made near Canal Creek at Shoalwater Bay in June of this year.

“Curlew” written by Travis Hock, was originally performed as a play at the Rockhampton Heritage Festival.

According to Clint, his performance in “Curlew” is his best performance to date.

“Everything went right during filming,” he said.

The film has also been entered into other film festivals.

MMMPHS NEWS

In 2020 our facility conduced a community-wide survey relating to services provided by our facility.

Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, responses were down on those received previously. From the responses received, our community indicated they need clarification on several areas. There were also some suggestions about improvements, which are already under discussion with our CAN (Community Advisory Network), as we formulate the Multi Purpose Health Plan for the next three years. As is often the case, not all suggestions are feasible, however consideration will be given to all ideas.

Doctor Stability: This was a common, recurring item raised during the 2020 survey. As most of you will be aware, we have now achieved stability with our Medical Staff. Drs Sattar and Sajjad have commenced their permanent positions here and are also working at Mount Morgan Medical Centre. Dr Clark continues his part-time role here. Unfortunately, due to Covid 19 lock downs, he was unable to attend for a short period, but is now back on board.

Bed Availability: Our facility has 10 Residential beds.

Our facility is usually at capacity with these, and we operate on a waiting list / needs basis should a vacancy occur.

Our Acute Ward also has 10 beds. Occasionally there will be times when a bed is not available, however in most instances, clients requiring admission are able to be accommodated. If a client is transferred to another facility (e.g., Rockhampton Hospital) it is often for specialised care, which cannot be provided at our facility.

Maternity Services: Our Hospital conducts weekly Ante Natal clinics (by appointment only). Ante Natal ladies are seen using a shared-care model.

This means that most of their visits are conducted here and that they are referred in to see a Doctor at Rockhampton Hospital prior to their expected delivery date. Some high risk clients may need to attend Rockhampton Hospital as their care needs are outside of our scope of care.

Meet, Sip Create – The next Meet, Sip, Create will be Thursday, 7 October. What can I say about these evenings? Thanks so much to the fabulous Maria for making it all happen, am absolutely stoked with the laughs, sharing and caring. If anyone is looking to connect in their community, then this is for you!

There were nine awesome individuals who turned up last Tuesday evening, some to create art and craft, and others to enjoy the conversation. The thing is, I need to work on my focus, because there were so many interesting conversations, I swear my head is on a swivel, and another thing….my sides hurt from laughing! Thanks for a fun night!

Wattle Day – Just a short note to say thank you to the organisers of the Mount Morgan Wattle Day Festival.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day, and hope everyone enjoyed making their Wattle print tote bags. We had a whopping 97 bags painted with varying designs, and even had to use one of the promo bags for our last group of four. All different ages and skill levels saw some fantastic works created, and with visitors from as far as Cairns who declared they will proudly showcase their Mount Morgan Wattle Day bag, it’s lovely to know our celebration sentiment has spread far and wide.

Indigenous clients are often seen by the Gumma Gundoo Health Service, who use rooms here to conduct their clinics.

Ante Natal clients are all issued with a Pregnancy Record Book. This book is kept by the clients and should be presented to the Clinician at each appointment.

This greatly assists the attending Nurse / Doctor, as all vital information regarding the pregnancy is recorded in this booklet.

Late in their pregnancy, all Ante Natal clients are offered a visit with the Maternal and Child Health Nurse. This assists with continuity of care in the post-natal period. Whilst in Maternity all clients are referred to Maternal and Child Health, unless they refuse, and are contacted by the Clinician to organise ongoing appointments for the infant.

news Over the last few months, a few local riders have been travelling to Gympie area to compete in Team Penning weekends.

The Team Penning events are a great fun weekend, meeting new riders of all ages and having fun working cattle in a smaller arena.

The weekends are long but are so enjoyable. So from here after a few discussions lead by Tony Harney in the CQ region last month, the club was born. From a few discussions to a committee being formed – Central Queensland Cattle Working Club (CQCWC) was established on 21 August 2021. The committee consists of riders from different backgrounds of equestrian disciplines with a common goal – to form a local cow working club.

The club’s main focus is for local riders from ages 5 – 99 years with having a local presence to encourage, empower and support our keen riders while having fun, meeting new people with the same interest and learning lots of difference skills to build a partnership with their horses.

CQCWC has established a strong foundation and with social media , this has shown an interest of over 724 people with active members of 322 on Facebook in a 12 day period.

PROMOTING THE RUOK? MESSAGE

“RUOK” Day was celebrated on 9 September. It is a day to really take a good look at ourselves, our family, friends, and work mates and see how we are all travelling mentally. 2020-2021 have been tough years for everyone, what with Covid, lockdowns, working or schooling from home, and not being able to see family and friends. Mental Illness can affect anyone at any time and for no apparent reason.

Keeping an eye on ourselves and those close to us and knowing where to turn when help is needed goes a long way toward healing.

Some of Mount Morgan’s Emergency Services personnel spent a bit of time together on recently at the Mount Morgan Fire Station thinking and talking about “RUOK” Day as they had a photo shoot.

Dressed in different uniforms, showing different aspects of their work, and each holding an “RUOK” card, the members showed that, no matter what they were doing, what age or gender, anyone can be affected by mental illness at any time.

Present were representatives from the Fire Brigade, Ambulance, SES, and Calliungul Rural Fire Brigade.

Due to lack of time, the local police could not be contacted to take part. Hopefully a full turnout will be available next time.

As most of our local Emergency Service members has seen and experienced some disturbing things during their service, they all know the importance of self-care and watching your mates.

As a group, they do watch out for each other. But they also watch MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

out for you, their community.

Movie Review CRUELLA When we settled down to watch CRUELLA we thought, this’ll be pleasant, this’ll be nice. It is Disney after all, always worth watching but, you know, family fare. Wow, were we in for a surprise. In fact, to be honest it only just scrapes in under the PG13 measuring bar, so probably not a movie for the littlies...But we were blown away.

CRUELLA is phenomenal.

new friends Jasper (Joel Fry) and Horace (Paul Walter Hauser), until, as a young “lady” in her late teens one of her dreams comes true. Circumstances and friends combine and we find Estella (Emma Stone) first meeting and then working for the world’s leading fashion designer, Baroness Von Hellman (the elegant but deadly Emma Thompson).

This origin backstory brilliantly reveals how Estella, a gifted, non-conforming young girl with big dreams is ostracized and intimidated because of her cleverness, her determination to be different and her poliosis (when a person is born with or develops a patch or swathe of white or grey hair, while the rest of their hair maintains natural colour).

Through the fruits of hard work, trials and tribulations, jealousy and competitiveness, the devastatingly chic Baroness morphs from Estella’s cold mentor into her ruthless nemesis, thus setting in motion the course of events and revelations that will unleash Estella’s dark and wicked side, causing her to become the ultra-fashionista genius-villain CRUELLA... Watch out, she’s bent on revenge, driven by fury and she’s about to wreak havoc.

We had a guest speaker from the Queensland Ambulance Service at the September Morning Tea on 22 September 2021. They always have very informative information to pass on to our members.

Incidentally, a group of young Australian fashion designers were so rapt, impressed and in love with CRUELLA’S fashions that they’ve been inspired to put together an entire CRUELLA-style line. Check ‘em out if you like the cut of their jib.

The October Morning Tea will be the last held for the year as we have the Christmas Lunch at the Grand Hotel, Mount Morgan on the last Friday in November.

It will be held on the 26 November 2021 starting at 11 am. The cost is $15 (being $10 for the lunch and $5 for the raffle). Other raffle tickets can be purchased on the day.

Yes, we are talking about Christmas. Where has this year gone? It has certainly flown.

Keeping busy gives us a reason to get out of bed.

Having a focus for the day ahead, even if it is just enjoying a cuppa or reading a book is important.
