It is interesting to learn how horses played such an important role in the development of the Mine and the commercial and social life of Mount Morgan in early days.

From 1882 to 1928, horses played an important part in the Mine’s operation and at the beginning of operations all ore was carted from the mountain top to the battery by horses and drays. By 1896 large amounts of timber were used by the Mine and all had to be hauled by horse teams. At the peak of the wood carting era up to 150 horse teams were operating in the district. Horses were used in all sections of the Mine. They hauled the molten slag from the furnaces, hauled ore from underground stopes, surface transport and engineers used them to manoeuvre heavy machinery into position.

Horses worked on shifts also and they walked down the Linda Shaft- each with a feed bag and a candle lantern hanging from its collar for the 8 hour shift. At the end of each shift they walked up the Linda Shaft but then galloped to the stables for their shower, grooming, and feeding. The first stables were at the Lower Yard but were replaced in 1919 by new stables at Walterhall as the original stables became untenable and so were demolished. The Walterhall stables were designed with great thought and many horsemen from all parts of Australia came to study the design of the stables. One item that was built as part of the intensive complex was the concrete silo for the storage of the corn. This silo still stands proudly in the Walterhall area. Everything possible was done for the comfort of the horse.

Of course the health of the horses was of paramount importance so their weight, diet and teeth were examined regularly and their shoes were made by teams of excellent farriers. Their collars and harnesses were made by crafted tradesmen in Rockhampton.

The Mining company owned a 500 acre paddock at Hamilton Creek about 3 miles from the stables. The horses were taken there every Saturday and then returned to the stables on the Sunday afternoon. Most of the horses were waiting at the gate on the Sunday afternoon. Sadly, it was in 1928 when liquidation happened that all Mine horses were sold.

In the commercial world, horses were used for the delivery of bread, mail, all groceries from the stores, items direct from the Railway Goods Shed, wood and even the icecream man had a horse driven cart. Before the railway line was constructed, teams of horses had to bring all supplies from Kabra up Razorback.

Socially horse riding on a pleasant Sunday afternoon was not only enjoyed by the male population but the town boasted of some fine lady riders also. It was a lovely time of life.

For many people, recollecting what you were doing this time a few years ago can probably prove a challenge.

Though for local couple Dennis and Marie Johnson (pictured), it’s a time they recall all too well.

It was during September 2010, that Dennis received the shock of his life – diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer.

“Marie and I hadn’t long moved to Mount Morgan and I’d been doing a lot of renovation work to our home,” Dennis said.

“I remember just not feeling well. Marie kept at me to go and see a doctor, and like most males I put it off for a while,” he laughed.

“I ended up going, and it wasn’t long after that I received the diagnosis.”

Describing the feeling of receiving the news, Dennis said: “It was like hitting a brick wall.” “ It was a real shock,” he said.

“The form of cancer made it more surprising I think breast cancer is just so uncommon in men.”

Dennis is now hoping to show his admiration for the Palliative Care staff members, by raising funds for the Palliative Care Unit and cancer research and prevention.

“I will be hosting a community dance at the Community Services Hall this month in aim of raising funds,” he said.

“The staff at Palliative Care do an amazing job. They assist people during one of the toughest times in life.

“I just wanted to do something in appreciation of all that they do and I’m hoping that with the support of the community, we can see funds raised for cancer research, prevention and support.”

A donation box can be found at the Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Office (61 Morgan Street) for those unable to attend the event, but interested in making a donation.

Dennis’ diagnosis lead to a mastectomy shortly after, followed by four months of intensive chemotherapy.

Now, with just two years until he is in full remission, Dennis says he looks back on 2010 with appreciation for all who provided him support.

“It wasn’t a good time that’s for sure – and not just for me, it was really hard for our family and friends,” Dennis said.

“But we were given so much support through it all. For me – Marie of course was my rock, and also our family and friends.

“The staff at the Palliative Care unit in Rockhampton were also just incredible.”

It couldn’t have been better weather for some fun at the Mount Morgan Dam last Sunday, as hundreds enjoyed the warm sun, blue sky and the range of activities on offer for Mount Morgan’s Silver Wattle Day. The community fun day, which was hosted by Mount Morgan Promotion and Development, was held in celebration of National Wattle Day, the Mount Morgan Wattle and Father’s Day. The event kicked off at 10am, and treated attendees to live music- presented by a number of impressive local artists, bush poetry- by Bob Pacey, market stalls, children’s amusement and even some fantastic water fun.

The celebrations also saw a number of attendees given the opportunity to take home their very own Mount Morgan Wattle seedlings; raised and provided by local garden guru, Murray Hare.

With the day now all wrapped up, MMPAD President John Steinberger says the committee are looking forward to doing it all again.

“We are really happy with how our first Wattle Day celebrations unfolded,” John said.

“We have been receiving positive comments from the community, and everyone really seemed to be enjoying themselves on the day.”

“This is definitely an event we hope to host annually, and we are looking forward to making it bigger and better as we go ahead.”

Following months of recent refurbishment works, the Grand Hotel is certainly living up to its name.

The local hotel has officially unveiled a grand transformation of their bar, following a complete renovation.

“The bar works were about three months in the making,” Grand Hotel manager, Andrew Smith said.

The refurbishments follow a number of exciting alterations for the historic hotel over the past three yearswith the introduction of a bottle shop and family bistro, renovations to the hotel’s toilets and an interior and full exterior paint job.

“The works have included the full removal of the previous bar, followed by the introduction of the current customised service area.

Andrew said the Grand Hotel team is thrilled with the upgrade.

“It is great to see the works fully completed and our whole bar area looking very impressive,” he said.

“The bar is now about three times the size and there’s now a much larger seating space for our patrons.”

With the bar renovations under wraps, Andrew said the Grand Hotel team are now onto their next renovation plan.

“We are aiming to see our pool room turned into a gaming room,” Andrew said.

“This is going to be a bit of work, but we hope to have it completed by Christmas.”

If this is so, then the recent opening of a new business in town couldn’t have been more timely.

“We’re not aiming to be overly fancy; we just want to serve people good food at a reasonable price.”

Local residents, Leeanne Bowen and Lynette Cox officially opened the doors of their first business last Sunday – on the 1st of September and the first day of Spring.

“Well Leanne’s nickname is Frog,” Lynette said when discussing the name of the new business.

“A friend and I were trying to come up with a name and we decided to blend Leanne’s name and nickname for a bit of fun, and it just stuck.”

Now operating six days a week, Lee Frog’s offers a range of lunch meals and coffees and sweets during the day, with pizzas available from the early evenings.

The launch of the new business is proving exciting times for the duo, with the business already receiving a number of positive comments and repeat customers.

When asked about the motivation behind their new business endeavour, they laughingly replied: “I think it was insanity.”

“But in all seriousness, we did it because we love to cook.” Lynette said.

The Mount Morgan State High School will soon commence an exciting new health education program, in collaboration with Bidgerdii Community Health Service.

“These will be used as part of our education program with the School, and will welcome the children and parents to do some planting.”

The State High School hosted an afternoon tea last Thursday to officially discuss the new program; welcoming staff, agency representatives, local students and their families.

The event also marked an opportunity for the School to welcome the health service to Mount Morgan, with the clinic officially opened in Morgan Street last month.

“We are looking forward to starting up this program with the local students,” Bidgerdii Community Relation Manager, Poyana Pensio said on the day.

“The name of the program is “Binbi Meta” – which means “healthy dwelling” in English.

“It is a program funded by the Government, and provides service to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,” Poyana said.

Bidgerdii Community Health Service operates the Mt Morgan Medical Centre (83 Morgan Street).

“The program welcomes students as well as their families and looks at health, wellbeing and lifestyle changes and the range of activities associated with this.”

Poyana said that one of the activities to be included as part of the program is gardening – with an opportunity to engage in both theoretical and practical learning.

“The open area behind the local clinic has recently seen some changes - with two large new large garden beds introduced,” he said.

Repairs to Mount Morgan Range - update: It almost seems an understatement that the reconstruction of the Mount Morgan Range is proving a challenge.

Despite the setbacks, the Department said that work is advancing steadily.

Complex design tasks, steep terrain and further slips have been just some of the difficulties for the crews who have been working to see the road reopened to traffic.

“Since January, reconstruction works have progressed significantly and specialist Transport and Main Roads teams and external contractors have been working tirelessly to re-open the road as soon as possible.”

The reconstruction works follow the extensive damage caused during the January flood event which saw 35 landslips along the highway.

The difficulties have caused a number of setbacks for the crews, who had originally hoped to see the road reopened last month.

“Initially the rebuilding task was anticipated to take six months, but is more difficult than expected due to the very steep terrain, further slippages, accessibility constraints and complex design challenges,” a Transport and Main Roads spokesperson announced last week.

“If there are no further rain events, we’re confident that the Mount Morgan Range will re-open to traffic in early 2014.”

Early works have included the removal of debris and the completion of a full geotechnical assessment, followed by the current major reconstruction efforts.

The Department said that heavy earthmoving equipment is presently being used on three fronts to stabilise loose rock and soil above the highway.

Funding for the reconstruction works is being provided through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), a joint federal and state initiative.

Under NDRRA, the federal government provides 75 per cent of the funding, with 25 per cent from the state government.

Young locals learnt about the environment and its sustainability in an impressively entertaining way last month, when they were paid a visit from the children’s entertainment service provider, Possum Music.

A successful parenting and early childhood program celebrated its birthday in Mount Morgan last week, with a special celebration at the Mount Morgan Dam.

Children and parents from Kindy Care, the Red Frog, B4-Learner Pre Prep class, Prep and Year One classes, and the HIPPY Program came together at Mount Morgan Primary for the special event.

The show, entitled “Something Very Fishy”, was hosted by Kathy Possum and took attendees on an underwater musical adventure; learning about the marine environment, sustainable fishing, and pollution.

Pictured: Possum Music, who have performed at the Kindy Care over the past two years, paid a visit to the Mount Morgan Primary School last month – hosting an engaging and interactive show for a number of young locals.

The Red Cross operates the Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY) locally, providing a free home-based parenting and early childhood enrichment program for families with children aged four and five years.

Local Red Cross coordinator Imogen Gregg-Auriac said the two-year program develops the foundations for learning in the home in the crucial early years.

“Delivered through both home visiting and parent groups, HIPPY provides free activities, books and materials to families as well as dedicated support from a home tutor,” she said.

“The activities provided are both fun and educational and can help children learn key skills before they start school.”

The program also continues to support families in the first year of prep school.

The local celebration involved local families holding a play date at the Mount Morgan Big Dam last Wednesday, September 4th.

The team provided platters of food and plenty of fun with outside games, as well as a drawing competition with the children, on the theme of my time with HIPPY. HIPPY is an international program which has been operating in sites around Australia since 1998.

The program is funded through the Australian Government and is licensed by the Brotherhood of St Laurence. The Australian Red Cross is proud to be the partner agency coordinating HIPPY locally.

The Mount Morgan Library was transformed from its usual tranquil setting on Thursday, September 5, when it played host to the Let’s Read Party!

Many local families took part in the event, which was held in celebration of Let’s Read’s sixth year in the community.

The morning included the judging of the Let’s Read Photo Competition, some fun learning the bongo drums, outdoor play with a parachute, morning tea, a celebratory cake, colouring in, and of course – reading.

A very big thank you to all who entered the Photo Competition during the lead up to the event, and to all who came along on the day and helped make it so much fun.

Last month saw the Rockhampton Regional Council host its annual Multicultural Morning Tea in Mount Morgan.

Around 30 people took part in the event, which also coincided with the Golden Mount Social Group’s regular meet at the Mount Morgan Community Services Hall.

Attendees enjoyed morning tea and a catch up with friends as part of the event, as well as the opportunity to learn about other cultures - with attendees from various cultural backgrounds in attendance on the day.

The morning also included free information sessions on health and wellbeing, with presentations from Queensland Mental Health and Australian Hearing Services.

The Supporting Women Scholarships program is a Queensland Government initiative which provides real opportunities for Queensland women. In 2012–13 more than 120 women across the State commenced studying with the assistance of this Scholarship. Now in its second round, the Department of Education Training and Employment is once again pleased to offer scholarships to women who are interested in pursuing study and employment in traditionally male dominated fields and skill shortage areas. Scholarships of up to $20,000 are available for study from Certificate IV level through to postgraduate. Scholarships are open to women who are leaving school, returning to study or changing career.

At Home Care Grants Program “At Home Care Grants” assist young people with high care needs currently living at home and at risk of entering aged care facilities.

One off grants of up to $10,000 are available for equipment, home modifications or services to assist young people between 18 and 65 who are living with a disability to remain in their own home for as long as possible. Hi Argus readers, Well what a busy but fantastic day we had at the Mount Morgan Dam last Sunday for the Silver Wattle Community Fun Day!!

We had a great day, and going by the feedback we have received, those attending did also! We have been blown away by the positive comments regarding the event, and sincerely thank all for your feedback.

This was our first official event held in celebration of National Wattle Day and Mount Morgan’s Wattle, and we are very happy to announce that it is something we are looking to celebrate annually.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all who came along to the event. A big thanks also goes to: our volunteers; all of the fantastic performers on the day; the amusement operators; all market stall holders and the event’s sponsors– Stanwell Corporation, Rockhampton Regional Council, Silver Wattle Caravan Park and TMC Tours.

A special thank you also goes to Kyel Roberson (Strings) for being MC for the day; Curtly Toby, for conducting the Welcome to Country; the Mount Morgan High School, for kindly providing additional safety wear for our water events; and Murray Hare and family for raising and supplying the large number of wattle seedlings for our special event completely free of charge.

We look forward to bringing you details in the very near future on another community event we are looking at hosting later in the year... so watch this space!

Child safety is everyone’s business in Mirani electorate Child Protection Week has kicked off in the Mirani electorate with the community getting together to remind people that child safety is everybody’s business.

The week, which runs from 1–7 September 2013, aims to raise the profile of child protection issues as well as teaching children and young people how they can best protect themselves.

I encourage everyone to get behind Child Protection Week and take part in local community events to help remind us that we all play a part in making our state the safest place to raise a child and acknowledge the hard work done by individuals and community groups to promote the safety, wellbeing and provide child protection services to some of our most vulnerable children and young people.

Mountain Mick’s Stuffed Chicken Kiev Burger (Patties)

A new fad that’s the chatter is “Stuffed Burgers”. This is not new, but it’s a cool way of making a plain burger or patties or giant rissole into an awesome tasting meal with a twist. You can use any kind of mince and the stuffing is up to you. Here I’ll show you my take on one of many different ones I’ve made.

Please enjoy!

Shopping list: • 1 kg of minced chicken thigh fillets • 2 eggs • 1 ¼ cups bread crumbs • ½ teasp sage powder • ½ teasp ground pepper (white or black) your choice • ¼ cups of olive oil for cooking in .

(For Garlic Butter mix): • 1 cup butter or margarine • 3 tablespoons of crushed garlic • Good pinch of salt • Good shaking of pepper - about ¼ teaspoon • ¼ cup dried parsley • 2 teasp cream Method: First, simply mix all of the ingredients for the Garlic Butter Mix together and put in the fridge to chill.

Next, to your chicken mince add garlic, pepper, parsley, sage, salt, eggs and bread crumbs. Mix by hand until all is fully mixed together.

Now, divide the mixture into quarters. Take 2/3 of each quarter and make a ball. Now flatten down to 25mm thick.

Then, make a bowl inside the patties and fill with some of the garlic butter. Now take the other 1/3 of the make a ball now flatten out to 10mm thick. With this, cover the garlic butter mix and seal it up.

Now cover with bread crumbs and repeat with the other three lots of mince.

Now fry in a little oil on medium heat for 10 minutes each side or bake in 170C pre-heated oven for 45 minutes on shallow baking tray. Turn over half way.

Serve with chips or German potato salad. I’d serve it with an ice cold German beer or an Australian white wine or something fruity.

Free writing workshop!

Budding young writers in Mount Morgan will have the chance to attend a free writing workshop with talented author Royce Bond at Rockhampton Regional Libraries during the September school holidays.

The writing workshop will cover practical tips for aspiring authors, including how to reveal the personality of a character; how to plan a chapter using visual clues and music; and offer the chance to purchase a signed copy of the author’s works.

Young authors will need to bring a clipboard with pens, pencils and story samples.

Friday 27 September (10am – 11.30am) Mount Morgan Library (School of Arts) Royce will also present one workshop for adults interested in writing for children at the Library on Saturday 12 October starting at 12 noon.
