WHAT A “BLOOMING” DAY!

Beautiful spring weather, top-notch, entertainment, market stalls, amusement rides, demonstrations and workshops all contributed to making the 2021 Mount Morgan Wattle Day Festival an enormous success.

The event was expertly compared by ABC Capricornia presenter, Paul Culliver.

The entertainment kicked off with Mount Morgan’s very own, Mount Ukes, following the Welcome to Country by Donna Anderson and official opening by Rockhampton Regional Council, Division 5 Councillor Cherie Rutherford.

What followed was a brilliant range of music from John Batley and family, Jodi Nichols and Amanda “Moo” Sealey. The last act of the morning session was the Sabaya Belly Dancers.

Life-long resident and devout Mount Morgan champion and stalwart, Bette Broom was awarded the 2021 Wattle Day Award in recognition of her many contributions to the Mount Morgan community.

The presentation of competition winners - Keilah Roginson (Prep colouring-in competition) and Victoria Connolly (Poetry winner) was the next event on the morning program.

Following these announcements, the entertainment was revved up for the 2020 Toyota Star Maker winner, Sammy White, followed by the headline act, Brad Butcher who was accompanied by Brendan Radford.

The stalls, workshops and demonstrations kept the patrons busy and entertained for the full five hours of the festival.

Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc President, Mr John Steinberger said he was extremely happy with the day.

“The weather was more than kind for the many hundreds that attended the festival, it was just a fanastic Mount Morgan clear Spring day.

“The artists performed beyond expectations, the activities and workshops pop up stalls were well patronised and stall holders kept busy throughout the day.

“The free amusement rides were popular for the younger generation.

“The volunteers who covered a range of duties from the preparation, operation and event closure on the day, did such a professional job.

“The Festival would not have happened without them.

“The whole show with the running entertainment throughout from what I saw was enjoyed by everyone.

Scores of people were seated in front of the stage and many others relaxing under the Federation Fig Trees as the music and humour of the festival sounds drifted over the area, just simply wonderful!

“Thank you to everyone who assisted, performed and attended,making this a great day for everyone,” Mr Steinberger said.

Audiobooks are an excellent way to enjoy books while keeping your hands free.

They are ideal for anyone who is unable to read a physical book or struggles to find time in their busy schedule to sit and read.

Rockhampton Regional Libraries have a wide range of audiobooks in different formats available to borrow or download.

What is an audiobook?

An audiobook is a recording of a book that has been read aloud.

The reader is often a trained actor or the author.

Sometimes the cover of an audiobook will state that it is ‘unabridged’ which means that the entire book has been read aloud and it has not been changed to better fit an audio format.

Audiobooks are available in physical format and digital format.

Physical formats include CD audiobooks (multiple discs) and MP3 audiobooks (one or two discs).

Digital audiobooks, also known as eAudiobooks, are available as downloadable files through an app or website.

90 YEARS OF MEMORIES

Edna James celebrated 90 years of memories with a small gathering of family and friends at her East Street residence. Edna was born in Wyndham and moved to Mount Morgan over 50 years ago. After the death of her first husband, Edna married Joe James.

Her three children, Charmaine, Rodger and Roslyn (pictured left) were present to help her celebrate her birthday, as were many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren (pictured below). Edna was a keen golfer and lawn bowler. She loves Mount Morgan and contributed to the Mount Morgan Girl Guides and the Presbyterian Day Care. She is now looking forward to celebrating her 100th birthday.

homework centre for high school Homework is an important part of every child’s education but finding the time to help your child get their homework completed can be challenging for your busy family. To ease the burden on families, Mount Morgan SHS has been successful in receiving a State Government grant to fund a Homework Centre.

The Homework Centre provides a supervised and suitable learning environment where your child can complete their homework before they come home from school or work on any assessments. In addition your child may also participate in other activities designed to support their health and wellbeing, such as reading. A healthy snack will also be provided every afternoon.

At Mount Morgan SHS the homework centre will run for one hour (3.10 – 4.10) on a Monday and Tuesday afternoon.

NEW PUBLICAN FOR RAILWAY HOTEL He studied for his Queensland Real Estate Licence, but due to the downturn in the real estate market in the area, he found it difficult to obtain employment in this industry.

He went out on his own for awhile, but couldn’t quite make it work - so he turned his sights on looking for an alternative career.

Paul has never been a publican before, but like his previous business of carpet cleaning pest control. Three years after starting this business in 2003, Paul brought a flood restoration business. Paul enjoyed being in business, but has taken some important lessons from his early foray into busines.

Mount Morgan’s Railway Hotel has a new publican.

Paul Gleeson (pictured above), a former Redland City Councillor and businessman took on the leasehold of the hotel on 1 September 2021.

Paul first ran for Council in 2012 and was elected. He was reelected in 2016, but missed out at the 2020 elections, winning the primary vote, but losing out after the distribution of preferences.

Paul said even though he enjoyed his time on Council, he would much rather run his own business.

“I am pretty happy not to be in Council any more.

“I said the week I got into Council

that the day that bureaucracy became the norm, that was the time to get out.

“Once you have run your own business, it’s hard to work within the boundaries of bureaucracy,” he said.

During his time at Capalaba, Paul spearheaded the formation of the Bayside Blues Festival, Fire charity concert and the Redland Sporting Foundation.

The sporting foundation raised funds to encourage children to play sport.

The funds were used to help with the sporting costs for lower socioeconomic families.

After his defeat at the 2020 Local Government election, Paul started to look around for a new venture.

Paul bought a motor home and started travelling around, visiting different areas in country New South Wales before heading up to Queensland where he visited Emu Park, Yeppoon and Mount Morgan.

He was in Mount Morgan in June, but decided that the town was promising, especially with the possibility of the mine reopening.

“I said to myself - imagine if the mine never reopens - can I live in the town and the answer was yes.”

He particularly likes the fact that many of the old buildings and homes in the town had been restored.

It was the historic feel of the town that made him decide to “make a go” of the pub and live in Mount Morgan.

$2500 Lorna McDonald Essay closes soon Arts Central Queensland’s Lorna McDonald Essay Prize is back for 2021 with a $2500 prize purse to celebrate local stories.

The award honours Rockhampton historian Dr Lorna McDonald, with a first prize of $2000 and a $500 runner-up encouragement award.

The annual competition is open to essays of 3000 to 5000 words exploring any aspect of Central Queensland: history, art, lifestyle, science, the natural world, personal accounts, and untold stories.

It’s free to enter and has no age or location limits.

Prize Coordinator Mark Svendsen said the award celebrated the life and work of the late Lorna McDonald in collecting, interpreting, recording and writing the history of the Central Queensland region.

Judge Roger McDonald, Dr McDonald’s son, said he was looking for overlooked and underrepresented aspects of the Central Queensland experience.

“Looking out across the paddock on a beautiful morning it is so MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

easy to take many aspects of the environment for granted: the underlying geology, the birdlife, the Aboriginal history to name but a few,” Mr McDonald says.

“We want to hear all of what makes Central Queensland tick.”

The 2021 Lorna McDonald Essay Prize is open for entries until September 30.

‘Why do I have to desex my dog/cat?”

The most commonly asked question we receive from clients is ‘Why do I have to desex my dog/cat?”. The common answer of course is to prevent unwanted litters, however there are other options to consider.

Some owners put off desexing their dogs due to thinking about having a litter at some stage down the track. What people often forget are the costs involved in breeding pets. Consider if your small breed dog was mated with by a stray dog who was much larger than your dog. This could then cause issues when it came to giving birth and can often end in having to do an emergency caesarean costing thousands. Another thing most people don’t know, is that desexing your pet also helps to prevent your pet from developing mammary tumours, ovarian cancer, prostate and testicular cancer.

Desexing isn’t as scary as some people think. Your pet will only be in hospital for the day and can go home later that afternoon once they have recovered from the anaesthetic. ‘… Whilst Mr. Stubbs was resident in Mt. Morgan and for some years that followed, he took great interest in local activity. He was one of the foundation members of the Mt. Morgan Brass Band [in 1889], and an active member for 25 years. For part of that time he was conductor. He had his own string orchestra which was in great demand for dances, church, patriotic and social functions …’ (‘Obituary. Mr U. Stubbs’, The Central Queensland Herald (Rockhampton, Qld. : 1930-1956), 29 July 1954).

My great-grandfather, English-born Upsall Stubbs (1868-1954), was a gifted musician. He played string, woodwind and brass musical instruments in various Mount Morgan bands and orchestras from the late 1880s to the early 1900s.

A white sheet was placed behind the musicians to block out the background, but you can still see a glimpse of his house on the left.

Music has played a special role in my family for generations. Upsall’s daughters, Gertrude and Gladys, were pianists and singers. His youngest granddaughter, my mother, Lilyan, studied piano and singing at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. By the time I was in primary school, I was the school’s pianist.

The Mount Morgan Rodeo Association Inc will hold its Junior Rodeo on Saturday, 18 September.

Recently the Rodeo Association received a muchneeded grant of $3500 from the Rockhampton Regional Council through its Community Assistance Program.

MUSEUM NEWS Mount Morgan Historical Museum is pleased to announce the winners of the Show Day Raffle and Father’s Day Raffle and would like to thank everyone for their generous support.

The Show Day Raffle was drawn by Noel Baker. First prize was won by Debbie Day and second prize was won by Leonie Eilers. The Father’s Day raffle was drawn at IGA by Jorja McFarlane on 4 September 2021. The winner was Zoe Scott with Kel Herbener

winning second prize. All raffle winners were notified by phone and posted to facebook and Mount Morgan Pride. A special mention was given to Pippa Baker for the donation of the Weber barbecue, and to Shirley O and Beris Austin for their kind donations of prizes.

Movie Review MILITARY WIVES Inspired by the true story of events that unfolded in 2010, MILITARY WIVES illustrates just how hard it must be for a person to wait at home or on base while their husbands, partners and loved ones are deployed into areas of great risk, danger zones around the world. The worry, the anxiety, the one occasion when you wish time to speed up and return your loved one safely to you soon is cruelly dashed when time perversely slows to a dreadful drag. The imagination must be tightly checked and controlled as well. The last thing you’d want is to let that run wild. Best to stay busy and focussed - but on what exactly?

With their partners away serving in Afghanistan, a group of women on the home front come together to find that focus. Could it be knitting? Movies? Crafts? Exercise classes? Cooking? It all seemed a

bit ho-hum to most of the girls. But then one of them suggested they form a choir, a MILITARY WIVES choir. They get to work to find that they love it, and it’s not long before they find themselves at the centre of a media sensation and on their way to becoming a worldwide movement.

Inspired by what has now become the global phenomenon of MILITARY WIVES’ choirs, our story celebrates a band of misfit women who would not under usual circumstances gel, blend or even get on with each other.

In fact some of them must make a conscious effort to put their claws away in the presence of certain members of the group.

However, when they gather on the military base to sing together, magic unfolds as they are woven into one beautiful, united musical body, and they begin to heal each other.

DEE RIVER OLDIES Through the generations Mount Morgan has had its fair share of ups and downs, but wherever you travel you will always meet someone who has lived or have family here. There is a real sense of pride and passion for the town and the people. Keeping a positive outlook and working to make our town the best place to be is not easy, but it is a goal to aim for each new day. Getting out to our meetings and morning teas is a way of meeting up with other members and catching up with what is happening around the town.

As unexpected bonds of love and friendship flourish, music and laughter transform their lives, helping each other to overcome their doubts and fears for loved ones in combat.

Despite the dour subject matter this film is light, happy and uplifting. Deftly handled with a light touch, empathy and great humour

by Director Peter Cattaneo and writers Rosanne Flynn and Rachel Tunnard, MILITARY WIVES will give your heart a little squeeze while you’re cheering and laughing out loud.

As of today there are now seventyfive MILITARY WIVES’ choirs throughout the UK and overseas, including in Australia. “In harmony there is strength.”

MILITARY WIVES is rated M for ‘sexual references and coarse language’ (we’d give it a PG13) and it runs for 108 minutes.

We have our next meeting on Tuesday, 21 September 2021 and the September morning tea is on Wednesday, 22 September 2021. We have a guest speaker on the day from the Queensland Ambulance Service. READY FOR THE FIRE SEASON Are you getting ready for the upcoming fire season?

The Calliungal Rural Fire Service Brigade is.

Winter in Mount Morgan is a relief from the heat of the summer season and makes it easier to do tasks to prepare for the rest of the year. For the Calliungal RFS Brigade at Mount Morgan it is a time when preparation activities for the upcoming fire season are done.

Activities such as developing new infrastructure to support firefighting activities. As water is a vital part of firefighting, the commissioning of new bulk water storage tanks is a vital support for the firefighters.

So the Brigade First Officer, Kevin Coughran, would like to thank the Fire and Vermin Team of the Department of Resources for their assistance with providing a new 20,000 litre water tanks to assist with the cool season burns that the Brigade has programmed for the upcoming few months.

These Hazard reduction burns are aimed to provide a protective ring around the town of Mount Morgan and other local inhabited areas, reducing the chance of a wildfire impacting properties. So, while the weather remains cool, do not be alarmed if you will see hazard burns conducted at various places in the Calliungal area.

The Brigade is also conducting Community Education activities advising people to prepare for the coming fire season, to plan what to do in an emergency and to reduce the hazards around their properties.

Remember, in an emergency, you need a plan. You need to ask yourself - If you leave early: • Do you have a Bushfire Evacuation Kit with your family’s important items and equipment needed to relocate which you can quickly and easily access and take with you at short notice?

• Have you left your property well-prepared to withstand a bushfire?

• Does everyone agree on the plan to leave early and know what to do?
