CQ Collection strikes gold A slice of Mount Morgan’s rich history is being added to the CQ Collection thanks to a generous donation from long term local Dr Athol Brewster, officially received on 17 July.

Rockhampton Regional Council Spokesperson for Communities, Councillor Drew Wickerson, said

the donation sketches a picture of life in the Mount Morgan area and further afield.

“I am honoured to officially receive this donation as part of the Rockhampton Regional Libraries’ CQ Collection,” said Cr Wickerson.

“Dr

distinguished life as a teacher, humanitarian, scholar, and academic both in Australia and India.

“His generous donation–which includes a selection of school books and academic works as well as memoirs, photographs, Continued on Page 2

Cr Wickerson said civilisations and communities must respect their heritage.

“Those that do not are destined to repeat the same mistakes and to neglect opportunities to build upon the great achievements of our ancestors,” Cr Wickerson said.

“That is the reason why RRC is so sincerely grateful for visionaries like Dr Athol Brewster who has generously donated such an invaluable collection to the community. Through his words, writings and historical artefacts, Dr Brewster takes us on journey into our rich, vibrant and sometimes turbulent past and back again.

“Within the lines of a previously forgotten attendance record, letter

or card, we are transported to a Mount Morgan school classroom to relive the learnings of a wideeyed young student, to the trenches of a grotesque world war where a youthful digger has just penned a few optimistic lines home to his mother or into the life of Dr Brewster himself as he travels the tropical subcontinent of India! Of course, the invaluable material donated by Dr Brewster would have little meaning if simply stored in a musty cardboard box somewhere.”

He said the outstanding work of the Rockhampton Library History Unit would ensure that this material would be carefully documented, curated and catalogued to possibly discover linkages that weave and thread into the overall fabric of our Regions rich tapestry.

“By conserving and sharing these narratives, the stories of our history, our community will indeed be strengthened,” Cr Wickerson said.

Divisional Councillor Cherie Rutherford said that she is excited to see Dr Brewster’s donation added to the collection.

“The Mount Morgan records in The CQ Collection paint a great picture of the heritage of this area,” said Cr Rutherford.

“There are family records, minutes from Mount Morgan Council meetings, and photographic collections.

“Dr Brewster’s donation is going to make a wonderful addition to the story these records tell about Mount Morgan. I’m excited for those who will go through this collection in years to come and discover some fantastic gems.”

COMMUNITY GROUPS HELP FIRE VICTIMS together to help the family involved. Mount Morgan IGA helped out by accepting donations and turning it into shopping vouchers.

The Mount Morgan Rodeo Association members and helpers have been busy collecting pledged donations of furniture and household items.

These items were stored at the Mount Morgan Showgrounds. Rodeo Association President, Mrs Barbara Gould was really impressed with the generosity of Mount Morgan people.

“The community always bans together and it’s good to see that this community spirit alive,” she said.

Small communities are known for banding together and supporting people in dire straits.

OLD SCHOOL BICYCLE SHOW A SUCCESS

Sunday morning was a beautiful winter’s day in Mount Morgan, at 8 am, the gates were opened to let the people waiting to bring their bikes in for the 2020 Central Queensland Old School Bicycle Show and Swap Meet. The sun was shining and there was no wind, it was perfect. The field started to fill up quickly as people wheeled their bikes in, and the swappers and sellers set up there stalls.

At 10 am the public started flowing in to admire the bikes and doing deals with the sellers. The swap area was busy for most of the time. I spoke to a few people that told me they found some good bargains, one person I know found a part that he never thought he would ever find. Some people were lucky to find parts to finish builds. It is always a challenge when rebuilding a twenty to fifty year old bicycle back to its original condition to find all the period correct parts. That is part of the attraction of events like this, bringing like minded people together.

Peter Mc drove his van up from Grafton full of parts to sell. Other people came from Mackay, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Maryborough, as well as the Rockhampton region to show off their bikes, sell and buy parts.

The field was very busy with about 70 machines on display. With a very good cross section of bikes, although there were only two BMXs and three MTBs, the rest of the categories were very well represented. The actual quality of the bicycles on display was higher than last year. It made it hard for the judges to pick between so many beautiful well turned out machines, in one category the difference was the quality of the saddles, another category was won because one bike had the most period correct parts. The bicycles are all over 20 years old, riders will change things when parts wear out or become outdated. I will change some of the categories for next year’s show to better suit the bikes that are being bought in to display.

During the day a steady stream of people came in to look and the bicycles and chat to the owners who where never far away. Lots of folk had lunch at the hotel, the roast lamb was excellent and kept the kitchen busy.

I had recently purchased time trial / triathlon bike from Phil Anderson, a famous Australian cyclist from the 1980s; in 1981 he was the first Australian to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France. Phil’s bike was used in a guess the weight of the bike competition.

The bike weighed 7. 64 kg, the winner was Elizabeth G who came in at 7.62 kg.

The best in show bike is voted by the public, this year it was won by John Fisher and his beautiful Malvern Star Skidstar GT. A real labour of love, this bike has been restored to its original showroom condition.

ILLEGAL DUMPING COSTS RATEPAYERS Rockhampton Regional Council is urging residents to do what they can to help prevent illegal dumping in our Region.

Spokesperson for Waste and Recycling Councillor Shane Latcham said that a recent incident highlighted how one person’s decisions can affect everyone.

“A few weeks ago we had somebody dump 50 industrial paint tins–which are classified as regulated waste–at a closed roadside bin station in Marmor,” said Cr Latcham.

“It is disappointing that there are some people in our community who think the rules don’t apply to them.

The result was that ratepayers have had to wear the $2700 it cost to have these cans removed and disposed of properly.

“I’m sure that residents in our Region can think of many ways their rates could be better spent than cleaning up someone else’s dumped rubbish.”

Spokesperson for Local Laws Councillor Ellen Smith said the matter was being taken seriously.

“While most people in our Region have more respect for their community than this, the bill for illegal dumping can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars a year,” said Cr Smith.

“Our Local Laws Officers are committed to investigating incidents like this, and will issue serious fines to offenders.

Spokesperson for the Environment Councillor Donna Kirkland said residents shouldn’t underestimate the impact illegal dumping can have on our environment.

“Dumped waste is not only an eyesore, it pollutes our environment and diminishes enjoyment of our public places,” said Cr Kirkland.

“There are appropriate means for waste removal and disposal. Thankfully the majority are aware of the negative consequences to community and environment when shortcuts are taken. Together we can support the message that illegal dumping is simply unacceptable.”

Illegal dumping fines can be upwards of $2135 for individuals and $6672 for corporations.

People may have heard the expression, “Taming the Tiger”, well Colleen Saltmer (Ede) of Colleen’s Hair Salon believes it should be “Trimming the Tiger”, especially when she has none other than local identity, Tiger Dobson sitting in the chair (pictured).

Hairdressing, for Colleen has been the family business and it was only natural that she would follow in the family’s footprints, especially since her parents owning a chain of salons in Rockhampton.

Her family has not only left its mark on the beauty world, but the Saloon Car Racing fraternity which was started by Colleen’s father and brother.

Colleen has worked from her current salon in Morgan Street, since 2000 and is now one of two Morgan Street businesses that have been operating for 20 or more years. The other one is Fox Video. Colleen also operated the Bella Donna Salon in Morgan Street in the late 1970’s, which followed many years managing cattle stations throughout Australia with her husband, including one of the outstations of Victoria River Downs, one of Australia’s largest cattle stations.

Colleen loves listening to her clients talking about their lives “I love listening to them talk about where they have been and what they have done. They lead interesting lives,” she said.

Some aspects of hairdressing have changed over the years, especially the hairstyles.

“The styles these days are more casual then the used to be,” she said.

Colleen calls Mount Morgan home now.

“I love Mount Morgan and the people I know are mostly lovely people,” she said.

When asked what the secret to business success in Mount Morgan was, Colleen felt that it’s all about meeting the needs of the town.

“You have to look around and see what the town needs – get to know the town and the people,” she said.

Movie Review KILLING EVE Oksana Astankova, codename Villanelle, is based on real-life assassin, La Tigresa, who was convicted of twenty-three separate murders in the 1990’s; and those are just the ones they knew about. La Tigresa (The Tigress) was an agent, operative and hitwoman for the Basque separatist group, the ETA. (The Basques are a European ethnic group with their own ancient language and culture, indiginous to the regions of northern-central Spain and south-western France.) La Tigresa’s real name was Idoia Lopez Riano and she was renowned for her legendary prowess in all things amorous. She was also a psychopath and completely without empathy.

Our girl, Villanelle is all of that. She can also be completely dispassionate while working but then erupt with exuberant giddy pride in her own performance. She may be charming, delightful, almost normal, but she can be at her most dangerous when acting happy, innocent, playful and naughty. Our Villanelle is a very complicated kitten.

Eve Polastri (the brilliant Sandra Oh, GREY’S ANATOMY) on the other hand is bored. She works for MI5 and she has a particular interest in female assassins, their psychologies, skills and methods. But here she is bogged down in protection roles and witness handling. So Eve decides to do a little unauthorized behind-thescenes investigating on her own into one of her

clients. Of course, she is found out and fired.

Happily though, Carolyn Martens (fantastic Fiona Shaw, HARRY POTTER), head of the Russia section of MI6, is aware of Eve’s particular passion, and snaps her up for a special assignment. She recruits Eve into a secret division within MI6 which is chasing an international assassin who calls herself Villanelle (Jodie Comer is perfect).

Eve’s dreams have all come true. She’s finally able to focus on what she really wants to do and what a remarkable subject she’s been given... She becomes captivated, enchanted by Villanelle. Inevitably, they cross paths and that enchantment evolves into full-blown obsession.

Our Villanelle becomes aware of the game and she in turn becomes fascinated with Eve. Before long both women are obsessed, each with the other. Let the games begin...

Luke Jenning’s brilliant writing delivers an intense, masterful blend of comedy and terror, action and drama, thrills and grey-matter teasers... Beautifully filmed in Tuscany, Paris, Berlin, Bucharest and London, KILLING EVE is also a visual delight and a little European Holiday in these housebound times. The rating is welldeserved at MA15+ for “strong themes, violence and sex scenes”.

A British red telephone box & Mount Morgan

By Catherine McIntosh, descendant of the colonial Stubbs family of Mount Morgan Continued from the last issue….

A traditional British red telephone box in the rural English village of North Cotes is an unexpected place to come across a display featuring memorabilia associated with Mount Morgan. North Cotes is in the county of Lincolnshire, about a four-hour drive north-east of London. My maternal great-grandfather, Upsall Stubbs (1868-1954), left his birth family in North Cotes for a new life in the Colony of Queensland in 1886. Soon after arrival, he found work at the newly-formed Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company. Sadly, Upsall never had the opportunity to return to North Cotes and see his birth family again. However, his sister and North Cotes resident, Gertrude (‘Gert’) Stubbs (1879-1951), sent him dozens of postcards and family photographs to remind him of his homeland. Her material was the catalyst for my journey to Lincolnshire in 2018 and 2019.

Thanks to Gertrude’s postcards with pictures of her local area - villages, towns, buildings and gardens were familiar to me during my visits. Most significant to me was her postcard showing the tiny village of Tetney Lock (near North Cotes), where Upsall was born and after which he named his Moonmera farm.

The exhibit brings together two very different worlds - North Cotes and Mount Morgan - into one special place to create the perfect curio. It comprises more than twenty labelled images, covering three sides of the booth. My village contact tells me that ramblers spend up to half an hour reading the material and taking photographs of the red telephone box and its display.

My dear great-Auntie Gert could never have imagined that her correspondence about the price of flour and sugar, Sunday school picnics and wash days would be returned to her village from Australia a century later and cause so much interest.

The author, Catherine McIntosh, is a Sydney resident. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and a Bachelor of Laws. She has worked mainly in the corporate sector. Her current interests are Mount Morgan history, family research, writing and French.

Upsall Stubbs’ life in Mount Morgan and Moonmera is displayed at the Mount Morgan Historical Museum.

‘Dear brother, do you remember this place? You will see the old home in the back’, wrote Gertrude on the back of her Tetney Lock postcard.

Tetney Lock today looks nearly the same as it did a century ago in the postcard picture. The original family home still stands next to the historic Crown and Anchor Inn, overlooking a canal and a small bridge (I was lucky enough to see a pair of white swans swim by).

Some of Gertrude’s postcards and photographs to her brother are displayed on North Cotes’ red telephone box (now a free book library). They provide an insight into her life and local area in the early twentieth century.

One special photograph captures the only time both parts of the family came together: the occasion of Mount Morgan-born Private Stubbs visiting family in North Cotes during his leave from the French battlefield. He is pictured in army uniform with his Auntie Gert, who is wearing a full-length black Victorian dress (and her trademark round glasses).

The exhibit wouldn’t be complete without some material of Upsall’s new life in the Antipodes. The display shows photographs of Upsall’s young family and the famous Mount Morgan gold mine. A photograph of Upsall in Mount Morgan Brass Band uniform is also included.

Secondary School students in Central Queensland are being encouraged to tread the boards in a new drama competition to be held in September, the Bard Awards 2020.

An initiative of Rockhampton Regional Council, The Bard Awards is an opportunity for students to rehearse and perform a dramatic work, and receive professional advice and assistance along the way.

While the term ‘bard’ is often used to refer to William Shakespeare, the competition will cover the wider definition, ‘story teller / poet.’

Entries, by individuals, pairs or groups, can be a performance of a traditional or contemporary monologue, duologue or group scene. Students will perform before adjudicator Tegan Devine at the Walter Reid cultural Centre in September. Prizes will be awarded and feedback will be provided.

Students will also be encouraged to attend a series of workshops in the lead up to the performances.

“This is a great opportunity for students to further develop their dramatic skills,” Rockhampton Regional Council Community Services Spokesperson Cr Drew Wickerson said.

“Rockhampton has produced some great performers over the years and I hope that The Bard Awards will help future generations develop their interest in the performing arts.”

The Bard Awards will be adjudicated by Tegan Devine, Principal/Owner of Devine Drama and Dance. Tegan has a wealth of experience in theatre. She holds a Graduate Certificate in Creative Industries, Bachelor of Performing Arts, Advanced Diploma of Film, Theatre & TV Acting and she is a NIDA Young Actors Studio graduate and WARD Acting Studio graduate.

She has also trained and completed short courses with Zen Zen Zo, TAFTA, La Boite Theatre Company and Sydney Dance Company.

“I am very excited to be part of this project,” Tegan said.

“The fact that it is a competition as well as a learning opportunity will be of immense benefit to local drama students.”

“Transformation” Exhibition up and running What a whirlwind few weeks at the Gallery. Since re-opening, after closure due to Covid 19, we have received many visitors, both local and tourists.

Piper, she often has children following her lead, and will joyfully engage in childlike whimsy, encouraging their emerging artistic talents. We all adore her!

The support our own townsfolk have shown has been phenomenal, and we would like to say thanks for buying local!

It really has been a noticeable increase in dollars injected into our artistic community.

Sinclair Oldfield – Another Artist we know, who also contributes to the running of the Gallery, through her continual support in any way needed. She has done front of counter, has brought in works when we have had a shortfall, and has lent an ear when a sounding board has been required to work through issues. Sinclair’s professional presentation has been a source of inspiration, as well as her huge heart!

Our latest Exhibition, “Transformation”, commenced on Friday, 10 July with an all day viewing, and a special transformation smudging ceremony using crystals and sage, performed by local Daryl Jacobson (Pictured right) from Acacia Owl Dreaming. After some Sacred Sound teachings to the group that reverberated around the space, and some inspirational words, good vibes could be felt all around. A fantastic way to start the Transformation Exhibition.

Artists came and went during the day, which was lovely for visitors to put a face to an artwork. There were no nibbles and drinks this time, due to Covid restrictions, however a virtual tour of the new works was posted on the Mount Morgan Gallery Facebook page.

Acknowledgement must go to the Gallery Volunteers, as they spent the day before exhibition opening, pulling down all the older works, and prepared the space for hanging. As usual they did an amazing job! Last edition we introduced our front of house Volunteers, so this time we would like you to meet those behind the scenes Volunteers, who occasionally appear to fill a day when we get stuck, but perform many tasks and inspire out of public view.

Karen Dollery – An Artist we have introduced before, Karen also assists with exhibition setups, stands in for front counter and workshops, and completely embodies the sharing, caring nature of creatives. Like the Pied Page 12

very lucky to have her, as well as all of our amazing Volunteers.

“Transformation” will run until 4 November, so plenty of time to check it out! To all Artists out there, our next Exhibition will be “Retro Explosion!” commencing Friday, 6 November, with a “Happy Days” Opening Event, Covid permitting.

Deb Dawes – What can we say about this lady! Miraculously there if you need a hand, no matter what it is! Need food, she will walk in with lunch…need muscle, tada…. she is there helping with the lift…. never asked but always offering, her willingness and reliability make her an invaluable friend and asset to the Gallery Team!

Robyn Watson – Robyn is an Artist, who we would love to see have her own Gallery one day!

She has immeasurable talent, and a vast collection of work, yet chooses to assist our little venture when needed. Robyn has stood in for opening up the Gallery, talked through ideas and supported our Exhibitions in many ways. We are

Pride in Your Town

Having checked with the Mount Morgan Historical Museum the dollars are coming in slowly so do not forget if you have a little spare money please remember the Museum. It still has a very big insurance to pay and we must not close our Museum. Every little helps. This week we pay tribute to some of the very famous talented women of the world that were the first to succeed in their chosen professions.

Can you imagine there once was an Empress of China…..? Wu Zetian the only woman in the history of China to assume the title of Empress Regnant came to the throne using her looks, cunning and connections to rule one of the largest empires of the world. She ruled in all but name for more than three decades (from 655 to 690) before breaking all precedent by founding her own dynasty and reigning as emperor for another fifteen years.

With ruthless determination she wielded power and influence, subjecting China to some positive programs, and some say, helped bring more equality between the sexes. Her mere presence on the throne was an infuriating challenge to Chinese orthodoxy, which insisted that no woman could or should meddle in politics, much less take on the imperial ruler. Even when she was long gone, the complex figure of Wu would be equally maddening to historical commentators to come.

Warrior Queen of India. (1205 1240).

A descendant of the Turkish Muslims who invaded India in the eleventh century Razia was the only woman ever crowned in Delhi Sultanate, which ruled parts of India from 1210 to 1526. Reigning as the fifth Mamluk Sultan in Delhi from 1236 to 1240, she was the first woman ruler in Muslim and Turkish history.

To some she was ruthless, to others revolutionary .That she was controversial almost goes without saying: on average during her time in power, she had the second lowest approval rating of any post war Prime minister.

Her reign was short, but impact grand: during that time she established schools, academics Page 14

An English Lady… Margaret Thatcher. After the 1979 election Margaret Thatcher became the first female Prime Minister of England.

After some problems with her Party she resigned her position in November 1990.

My policy she said in her early years are not based on home economic theory but things I and millions like me were brought up with: an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay; live within your means; put a nest egg away for a rainy day; pay your bills on time; and support the police.

After her resignation a poll was held and over 50% had said that on balance she had been good for the country. Margaret Thatcher remained a revolutionary figure who revitalized Britain’s economy: impacted the trade unions and put MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

the Unighted Kingdom on the path to recovery and long term growth.

Australia. We followed England with the first female Prime Minister with Julia Gillard but as that is so recent we will not pass comments as we leave that to our readers. We do wish to mention two great Aussie women who were firsts in their chosen fields.

One is Dame Quentin Bryce.

Quentin Bryce was born in Brisbane in 1942 and spent her early years at Ilfracombe. In 1965 she graduated with degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws. She has enjoyed such a rich and distinguished career as an academic, lawyer, the rights of women and children and the welfare of the family.

She received numerous awards both on fields in Queensland and Australia.

Special contribution made by her was advancing rights and equality. On September 5 2008 Quentin Bryce was sworn in as Australia’s first woman to hold the position of Governor General. She is still very active in Australian society and brings forty years of experience.

Our final lady who is a first is Dawn Frazer. Larrikin Dawn is so well known and will be for years to come as possibly the greatest female swimmer of all time. Her greatest achievement was in October of 1962 with the time of 59.9 seconds when she was the first woman to break the one minute barrier in the 100 meters freestyle.

Dawn won 8 Olympic gold medals. Dawn, to this day is so involved with all sport, a great role model and a supporter of all sports people.

Meanwhile, to make the filling, place bourbon, chocolate, sugar and golden syrup in a small saucepan over low–medium heat and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until chocolate melts and mixture is smooth. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly. Add eggs and whisk to combine. Scatter pecans over pastry base and pour over golden syrup mixture. Place on an oven tray and bake for 35 minutes or until filling is browned and firm to the touch. Cool in pan to room temperature.

6. Cut pie into wedges and serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice-cream.

INGREDIENTS FILLING 60ml Rye bourbon 150g (2/3 cup firmly packed) brown sugar 100ml golden syrup 100g dark chocolate buttons 3 eggs, lightly beaten 240g (2 cups) pecan halves

This rich and indulgent pecan pie is sure to be a hit at your next BBQ or party!

SHORTCRUST PASTRY 200g (1 1/3 cups) plain flour Pinch of salt 125g chilled unsalted butter, chopped 1 egg, lightly beaten METHOD 1. To make pastry, combine flour and salt in a large bowl. Add butter and, using your fingers, rub into flour mixture until it resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Make a well in centre of flour mixture. Combine egg and 1 tablespoon iced water in a small bowl, then pour into well. Using a round-bladed knife, stir until mixture forms a dough.

2. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and shape into a 2.5cm-thick disc. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

3. Preheat oven to 200C. Place dough on a lightly floured work surface and roll out to a 30cm diameter disc. Line pan with dough, then trim and discard excess. Refrigerate for 15 minutes.

PUBLIC NOTICE MORGAN STREET WI-FI Rockhampton Regional Council wishes to advise that from 3 August 2020, the hours of free Wi-Fi in Morgan Street will be reduced, and will no longer be available between 10pm and 5am.

The hours will be reduced in line with other Council operated public areas in the Region, and are being carried out due to recent reports of minor vandalism.

The reduced hours will be trialled during the winter period, with further changes to be advised at a later date.
