IRONSTONE EXTREME - ENDURO

Ironstone Extreme - from Page 1 Mankind has always tested itself against nature and the natural elements and the recently held event just outside of Mount Morgan, Ironstone Extreme, certainly provided a test for man and motorcycle.

Ironstone Extreme was the second race of a five-event championship program conducted by Grassroots Enduro Australia and was held on the weekend of 25-26 June. The names of the events – Insane Ride, Goldfields Extreme Kosciusko Killer, Hill Storm Challenge and of course, Ironstone Extreme, are indicative that the events are not for the faint-hearted or the unskilled rider!

Grassroots Enduro Australia is Australian Hard Enduro that established and promotes a national series the Australian Hard Enduro Championship.

Company Director, Greg Peterson said an event was held on the property in 2021 and the location of the property being close to the township of Mount Morgan, its proximity to the Rockhampton airport and the fact that the property itself offered a great variety of terrain made it a strong consideration for the 2022 championships.

More than 250 riders registered for the Ironstone Challenge.

“It was a true national event with riders attending from every state and territory of Australia, the majority from New South Wales and Victoria,” Greg said.

“I saw the ironstone Mountain name on the bus shelter and later discovered Mount Morgan used to be called Ironstone Mountain. I wanted to incorporate Ironstone into the name of the event, in recognition of the town,” he said.

Grassroots Enduro Australia was started in 2019 by two passionate hard enduro riders – Greg Petersen and Ryan Peterson after they held several hard enduro races in 2017 and early 2018.

The series consists of five races, this year we have an additional event later in the year with a top international rider, Mario Roman from Spain” Greg said.

With the 2022 event done and dusted, Greg has indicated that he would love to come back in 2023 with an even bigger and better event.

The events main sponsors were Endurogear.com. au, B n B Off Road engineering, Sherco motorcycle Australia, Rack n Roll motorcycle carriers, Zac Speed Australia, Dirt Bike burrito podcast Goldentyre Australia and Pulse Media.

MOUNT MORGAN CELEBRATES NAIDOC Mount Morgan celebrated NAIDOC Week both at a High School and community level.

Mount Morgan State High School held NAIDOC celebrations, including a Kup-Murri in the last week of school. Other activities included boomerang and

rock painting and spear throwing.

A mosaic mural, which was designed by Jade Goodwin and worked on by students during the 2021 NAIDOC celebrations was presented to the Gangulu Elders.

The Kup-Murri feast was prepared by Flip Toby and Ray Blucher and included beef, pork, chicken, potato, sweet potato, pumpkin, carrots and damper.

The community NAIDOC celebrations were organised by the Mundagutta Youth Program organisers and included a march from the Mount Morgan School of Arts to the Green Shed in Boyd Park where a range of activities were held including painting, weaving, learning about smoking ceremonies and the Gangulu language which was led by Natalie Forder.

Over 25 youths participated in the activities for the day celebrating the theme - “Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!” Mundagutta activities are held every Wednesday at the Green Shed in Boyd Park from 4 pm.

Fourteen months after moving to Mount Morgan and taking on the ownership of the Mount Morgan Motel and Van Park, Kristie and Keith Lavell are still living their Mount Morgan Dream!

The past 14 months have been busy ones for Kristie and Keith, originally from the Yarra Valley, with the continued refurbishment of the park and motel.

As well as improving the aesthetics of the park, Kristie and Keith have also been updating logos, brochures and their website.

IMAGINE ROTARY - INTO THE FUTURE

The Rotary Club of Mount Morgan annual handover evening on 30 June was tinged with sadness as the club farewelled one of its members.

Helen Jessop, who has been a member of the club for over 10 years left Mount Morgan last Friday (1 July). As well as a farewell gift she was presented with her second Paul Harris Sapphire for her service to Rotary.

Outgoing President, Rosemary Izzard, outlined the activities that the club had been involved in over the past 12 months and how the club had achieved the 2021-2022 Rotary Motto - Serve to Change Lives.

Some of the major projects for the year was the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program, the Leadership Camp, the erection of a flagpole at the Mount Morgan State High School and the rejuvenation of the East Street Visitor and the Frank Golding Lookout signs.

The 2022-2023 Rotary Year has already proven to be a ground breaking year for Rotary International (RI) with Canadian Rotarian Jennifer set to become RI’s - the first female president in the 115 years of Rotary’s history. Incoming President of the Rotary Club of Mount Morgan, Craig Edmonstone reflected on the 2022-2023 RI theme - Imagine Rotary.

“So, for just a moment, let’s imagine that Rotary did not exist and we did nothing about polio, clean water, disease prevention, childhood reading, peace, kindness and hope. Imagine if Rotarian did nothing about drought assistance, bushfire destruction or flood recovery,” Craig said.

“Now imagine what our communities would look like if there were no Rotary clubs, or indeed no other Page 6

similar community minded organisations doing their best.”

“There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that our communities are much improved because of the work of each and every Rotary Club. The Rotary Club of Mount Morgan has always been active and well regarded in the District.”

“The Club always punches above its weight and has continued to provide regular community service despite difficult local conditions.”

MIRANI MESSAGE DEE RIVER OLDIES With Stephen Andrew, MP After over 30 years of lows and highs concerning water, the Mount Morgan Gold Town Community strikes it rich with the $40.4 million pledge from the current Government to commit to building a Pipeline and reservoir from Gracemere to Mount Morgan’s No.7 Dam. It’s been long overdue and more than deserved after the contributions Mount Morgan has made to our country and state.

WATER is the issue on everyone’s lips and access to a reliable water supply for the township and surrounds will stabilise the town’s future, so I will be making sure that this is a priority and work progresses quickly to proof the town from future water shortages and restrictions.

Additional benefits include the option to construct a secondary parallel-pipeline that has been identified by Heritage Minerals, concerned with the transportation of processed Iron Pyrite in a slurry form to a collection point situated in Gracemere.

This will provide a safe sensible way to transport the abundance of Iron Pyrite from the Mount Morgan Mine site down the range using the same environmental footprint and will eliminate trucking ore via the Razor Backs, subverting dangerous dust and reducing trucks having to traverse the back roads and highways.

It was so good to catch up with our members at the June monthly meeting and the musical morning tea.

There was a good roll up of members who enjoyed the morning out with good songs and toe tapping music. We are planning our ‘Christmas in July’ and staying local this year. We will be going to the Grand Hotel, Mount Morgan on Wednesday, 27 July 2022.

Entry will be from 11.30 am, with lunch served at 12.30 pm. The cost is $10 per member for lunch plus $5 for the raffle. Money to be paid by Tuesday 19 July, 2022 to secure your seat.

Our ‘Damper Day at the Hall’ is planned for Wednesday, 24 August 2022 starting at 11.00 am.

Mark it on your calendar. The cost is $5 and will include mince and rice for lunch. There will be a lucky door prize and raffle on the day.

A very big thank you to our members who help out where they can. Their donations, time and help is appreciated and we thank all our members for coming along. New and existing members are welcome.

This will deliver a double hit outcome for the township; water supply for the town and less toxic pyrite to leach into the Dee River.

We need this actioned as soon as practicable to aid in the reduction of ongoing environmental damage and to ensure reliable water supply to the town and surrounds.

I will be engaging with the Minister for expansion of water infrastructure to incorporate another pipeline into this project concerning reliable water supply for the Fitzroy Agricultural Corridor, in an effort to build the agricultural sector and to bolster these communities as well.

In the pursuit of awareness concerning current and pending projects, we will be keeping the community in the southern part of the Mirani electorate informed via our column here in the ARGUS; I will be providing updates on all matters on a regular basis that have an impact on Mount Morgan and surrounds.

COUNCIL CONNECTION WITH DIVISION 5 COUNCILLOR CHERIE RUTHERFORD This month marked an historic moment for Mount Morgan as we welcomed the $40.4million funding commitment from the Queensland Government toward the much-anticipated water pipeline.

This commitment, together with the federal funding of $3.5million and Council’s contribution of completing the business case can now see this project through to completion. This has been something this Council has been actively lobbying for, both at the federal and state level, so it was music to our ears - as I imagine it was for all of you.

It is just amazing to think that the Mount Morgan community will soon have a secure permanent water source which not only benefits the residents today but will allow the town to grow and prosper in the future.

I want to thank everyone in Mount Morgan for their patience, while Council did the necessary work to secure the funding. While it will take around two years to build, I am just thrilled that this is now firmly in our sights.

From here, the next step will be to progress with the detailed design, and we will be talking to the community as we move towards construction.

Another project for the Mount Morgan community is of course, the redevelopment of the pool into a new aquatic precinct.

You may have noticed fencing being erected around the pool which is purely a safety measure in place while the pool is drained this month.

I know I have said it before, but Council is committed to consulting with the community during the design phase for this project. This facility will be for you the people of Mount Morgan, so of course we want to make sure that it will meet your needs, both on completion, and for generations to come.

Concept designs are underway now and we will be bringing these to the community for your feedback in the coming months.

Finally, you may have noticed the vote to bring the Northern Suburbs home to the Rockhampton Region has been underway.There may be some of you asking the question, ‘How will this affect me?’.

What I will say is this – this decision will absolutely affect you here in Mount Morgan. Just like it will affect the all the residents across our region, from Gracemere to Gogango, Bajool to Berserker and everywhere in between.

More people, mean more voices advocating for the important infrastructure that we need to grow our community –like the pipeline, or the new aquatic centre!

Rockhampton Region rates money is already going to infrastructure that is being used by residents in the Northern Suburbs. By voting ‘Yes’ you are not only supporting the wishes of those residents, but it allows them to contribute to the community that they actually live in.

The cost of them using our assets without our Council receiving any rates revenue means that cost is instead worn by our current Rockhampton Region ratepayers, so this is balancing what is currently a very unfair ledger. Not only that, but these residents have voted three times to be part of the Rockhampton Region, and have simply been ignored. If you want to support them, vote ‘Yes’ and help them be part of the Rockhampton Region. While the online vote closed at 5pm on Monday 4 July, there is still an opportunity to have your say.

If you have not yet voted and perhaps you still have the letter from the Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) sitting on your kitchen bench, or up on your fridge, you can return a postal vote.

The ECQ will be accepting postal votes up until 5pm Thursday 14 July.

MOUNT MORGAN STRATEGY UPDATE Rockhampton Regional Council’s Tourism and Economic Development arm Advance Rockhampton gave Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc [MMPAD] an update on the General Permission Areas (GPA) intended for Mount Morgan at a recent MMPAD meeting. Council is currently looking at a Land Management Plan and awaiting their legal team to write up the relevant paperwork for the Horse Creek area. The site has infrastructure including ample car parking, amenities and Department of Resources permissions. Advance Rockhampton is also working on a Tourism Promotion Plan for the prospecting experience.

The Leydens Hill site has several issues which need to be resolved before it can go ahead. These include lack of amenities, car parking, entry way and proximity to the river which all need to be resolved before moving forward with the site. The opening of the Gelobera Forest area has been put on hold. Advance Rockhampton have also had staffing issues following the departure of the former officer who was working on the GPA activation. However, this issue has been resolved with a recent appointment being made.

Other discussion points included: •Proposal for Mount Morgan: Advance is working on a “Larger Visitor Point of View” to target visitors to the region and in particular Mount Morgan.

•Rocky Bike Trail: Mountain Bike event 9-10 July attracting a pathway of 300 people and will visit the Mount Morgan Bike trail.

• Tourism App for Mount Morgan to allow visitors to access a self-guided tour of the town, similar to the Rockhampton Zoo currently in use.

•Mine, Caverns, Mine Museum General Office: No update at this stage. Jamie McKenzie, who will be leading the Mount Morgan Strategy is keen to meet with MMPAD and the community as soon as possible to give updates on above as well as the Mount Morgan Bike Trail, inspection and maintenance. He will also give feedback from the Mountain Bike Event in July.

Cardiac Rehabilitation: Cardiac Rehabilitation services are available here in Mount Morgan and is run on a Monday and Wednesday each week. A referral to this service is needed, however clients may also self-refer, should they not wish to go through their GP. The program usually consists of an initial assessment by the Cardiac Nurse and Exercise Physiologist, followed by a ten (10) session gym program and 5 (five) education sessions. The program is concluded by a post assessment by the Exercise Physiologist. Heart Failure clinic clients do have a slightly different program, to the standard rehabilitation one, but this too is sometimes available here.

Movie Review DELICIOUS I decided early in the piece that after Mururoa Atoll, The Rainbow Warrior and France’s single digit salute to Australia and our sister New Zealand, we would not be supporting them by buying any French films, ever. But their movies are so good... The acting, the sets, production values, scripts, costumes - all wonderful.

So, in the end we drew a distinct line between French art and French politics and ever since we’ve carried the best of French films. Even when that man of Napoleonic stature Emmanuel Macron recently threw all of the toys out of his cot because Australia cancelled a contract that the French were not fulfilling, and he sulkily and petulantly said naughty things about our Prime Minister - even then we defended French art over French politics.

When you watch DELICIOUS you’ll understand why.

piece of work, replete with humour, delightful and luscious, but filled with dangers overt and covert, tensions sexual and political; and swift twists and turns of events...

PATERSON WINS SPORTS CARNIVAL Paterson House was the winner of Mount Morgan State High School’s Athletics Carnival held on Friday, 24 July.

Paterson 1st: 1194 points, Gordon 2nd: 952 points and Kendall 3rd: 550 points. Gordon House won the War Cry and Tug-o-War while Kendall was awarded the “cleanest house”.

The Principal’s Cup for the Fastest in the School was awarded to Zayveon Leisha and Lilly Passmore.

FLOOD ASSISTANCE RECOGNISED

During January and February of 2019 several hundred State Emergency Service (SES) personnel were deployed to the Townsville area to assist the community after the worst flooding event in Townsville’s history.

This flood was preceded by a slow moving but vigorous low - pressure weather event situated to the east of Mt Isa that dumped 1259mm of rain at Townsville Aero Club over nine days. During this time SES received 4900 requests for assistance.

One of our long serving (30 years) Mount Morgan SES members Jason Moran (picture right) was one of the SES members who was deployed to Townsville during this event and at our last training night Local Controller, Eddie Cowie, presented Jason with the prestigious Commissioners Commendation Certificate ‘for his exemplary support during the 2019 Townsville Floods’.

Jason is one of a select group of SES personnel from around the state who was presented with the Commendation. Late last year at a presentation ceremony at SES Area Office, Jason was also presented with a National Emergency Medal Clasp – Townsville Floods 2019.

On the same night two of our newer recruits, Riley Lewis and Brayden Sealy (pictured right) who joined the Mount Morgan SES Group two years ago were promoted to the rank of Field Operations and were presented with their letter of appointment and epaulettes by Group Leader Lyn Porter.

To achieve this rank both members had to participate in SES roles and functions to an acceptable standard and hold their current rank of Community Member for 6 months and successfully complete the following training: SES Induction, Community Volunteering, Safety, General Rescue, Casualty Handling, Ropes, Knots & Holdfasts, Ladders, Emergency Lighting, Operate Communications Equipment, First Aid and Storm & Water Damage Operations.

Both members have shown they are committed to the service by making themselves available to attend all activations and training sessions and using their initiative to complete routine tasks and maintenance.

They have organised and ran training scenarios to hone our skills and have already completed some of the high-risk courses towards their next rank.

Congratulations to you both and keep up the good work!

LIBRARY NEWS Minions, Mango and Jigsaws Colouring competition winners Tomas, Aurora and Eliza Wanstall were thrilled to pick up their free passes from the Mount Morgan Library recently to see Gru: The rise of the Minions at Birch Carroll & Coyle Cinemas. The library holds various competitions throughout the year, so make sure you visit often to find out what’s happening.

Fans of the Minons will find some great resources on the shelves to extend their love of the charming yellow characters, such as Minions - Banana!, a graphic novel by Colin Renaud featuring the mischievous little henchmen. Written in a comic book style for junior readers, the book combines two volumes from the Minions series.

LEGO® lovers will find a useful information book in the collection devoted to making simple Minion characters and accessories with LEGO® blocks. Klang Joachim’s Minions: Cool projects for your LEGO box is sure to inspire and delight. An added bonus for locals is the LEGO® Club which meets every Wednesday afternoon at the library – why not come along and try out some of the designs?

And of course, there are Minions and Despicable me movies on DVD that are also available for loan.

Jigsaws lovers unite! Another exciting addition to the collection is a range of jigsaws for all ages, available for loan from each library branch. Jigsaws are available for a normal three-week loan and can be reserved from other Rockhampton libraries. WALLY HALL MEMORIAL GOLF DAY Near perfect weather heralded the 2022 Wally Hall Memorial Golf Day held on Saturday, 26 June at the Mount Morgan Golf Club. The course was in great condition with some excellent scores recorded.

Thirteen teams of three competed in the three-person ambrose. All prizes and trophies were donated by the extended Hall family. The Mount Morgan Golf Club would like to thank them for their continued support and sponsorship.Numerous raffle prizes were on offer and Sharryn Hall and helpers did a brilliant job raising $900 for the Queensland Cancer Council.

AGM Mount Morgan Citizens Club Inc held its AGM on Sunday, 26 June.

Despite long term advertising, there was a relatively disappointing turnout of Members.

Be sure to check emails, texts, the Argus and Facebook as this is where notice of meetings is shared. We were able to make quorum, and proceeded with the meeting, and election of the Executive positions.

We thank those willing to put their
