a cut above the rest

Traditionally Friday afternoons at school go by rather slowly with anticipation for the weekend increasing with each passing minute.

However, on Friday, 18 June, Mount Morgan State High School held an air of festivity as the principal, teachers, school nurses, counsellors and students lined up to lose their hair - all for a good cause.

The World’s Greatest Shave supported fundraising for blood cancer research.

Mane Street Hair Studio owner, Kodie and employee Sharnee were on hand to ensure that locks, mustaches and beards were taken off cleanly.

The afternoon started off with a sausage sizzle cooked by members of the Rotary Club of Mount Morgan. Principal Dan Petersen lined up to lose his beard, mustache and hair, while Student Advice Counsellor, Ben Lodewikus had his goatee and mustache shaved.

Young student, Dakota Bergin (pictured below with Kodie from Mane Street Hair Studio) donated 20 cm off the length of her hair for a wig, while PE teacher, Lachlan Jones, found out how painful leg waxing was.

A fundraising goal of $5000 was set and at the start of the Friday afternoon event was well over $4000.

SES OPEN DAY

Mount Morgan State Emergency Service held its first Open Day on Saturday, 12 June.

This was the first of many Open Days to be held throughout the Rockhampton Region in June.

The SES unit teamed up with the Local Disaster Management team to educate visitors on preparing for disasters. The Open Day was held at Mount Morgan’s SES unit depot.

As well as the SES Open Day members of the QFES and Calliungal Rural Firebrigade hosted an information session at the No 7 Dam on Saturday afternoon.

Mount Morgan Rodeo Association is preparing for its next big event for 2021 - the Junior Rodeo to be held on 18 September.

Recently, Vice-Preisdent Juerge Veber and Secretary, Marie Maroney presented a $500 cheque to Mount Morgan State High School Captains Bailey Caitlin and Lanie Martin for the assistance provided from the May Weekend Rodeo. This will go towards the Senior’s Formal Fundraising efforts.

celebrating 100 years

Volunteers and townspeople gathered at the Mount Morgan Historical Museum on Saturday, 12 June to celebrate the 100th birthday of the 1921 Buick Hearse.

Donated by the Tucker family (of Tucker and Nankevill Funeral Directors connections) in the 1960’s, when the museum was located in East Street.

The Buick was the first motorised hearse in Mount Morgan and was last used in 1961 for the funeral of Gwen Scott’s (treasurer at the museum) grandmother.

Paul Tucker, the grandson of the hearse’s owner was on hand to cut the cake which was made and decorated by Gwen Scott.

The cake boasted a picture of the hearse. The hearse still works (although it is in need of a few minor repairs), but at 100 years, it could be forgiven for needing a part or two.

Local Funeral director Brian Glover, drove the hearse in the Golden Mount Festival about three years ago.

Getting in and out of the driver’s seat is also a feat in itself as Dianne and Robyn (pictured above) found out. Even Paul Tucker tried the driver’s seat for size.

Rockhampton Regional Councillor Ellen Smith was also in attendance. Cr Smith marvelled at the etched glass on the hearse.

The Mount Morgan Historical Museum is open seven days a week from 10 am to 4 pm and houses the many treasures of Mount Morgan’s wonderful past.

From time to time, items such as the hearse, a special bicycle and a 1942 International Fire Engine are taken out for special occasions.

FROM DREAM TO REALITY

On 24 June, Stephen Smith’s dream of owning a games and toy store will become a reality.

Steve is a collector at heart and it gives him great joy to share his love and passion for collecting with other people.

The newest business in Mount Morgan will open it’s doors at 98 James Street, which is the old picture theatre.

Steve is a little nervous about the potential for success of the store, but he is prepared to give it time.

In fact, Steve’s store is a veritable Aladdin’s cave of treasures.

Originally from Battle Creek, Michigen in the United States, Steve migrated with his family in 1968.

The family started their Australian journey in Sydney. Over 10 years ago, Steve ended up in Mount Morgan. During this time Steve volunteered a the Dee Bowls Club and continued his market forays looking to expand his collections.

He now has a shop full of toys trading cards, games, old bottles, fossils (some of which he has found locally) - the range is phenomenal. His store was made possible by a bequest from his late father’s will. Steve invested some of the money into starting the store.

The store will open Thursdays to Sundays initially, but may change if longer hours are required.

“I am here for the long haul,” he said.

“This is the first real big thing I have done in my life,” he said.

It’s no small feat when you look around the store and see the phenomenal variety of collectables that Steve has on display and for sale.

Collecting has always interested Steve and he often looks around at markets and in second hand stores to add to his stash of comic books, coins, figurines or other collectables.

“There are a lot of people who collect items such as Ooshies or the like,” he said.

“I have plenty of those as well.”

NETBALL TEAMS BRING HOME THE GOLD Mount Morgan State High School’s (MMSHS) Netball teams gave it their best shot in the netball Grand Finals in Rockhampton on Friday, 18 June, winning two out of three of their Grand Final matches.

Three teams qualified by winning their respective games on Thursday, 17 June.

The first game was the year 9’s who played a hard game against Rockhampton Girls Grammar.

Unfortunately on the night, the Girls Grammar team proved too strong for Mount Morgan. The coach was Lachlan Jones. The Most Valuable player for the team was Ailsa Williams.

The next game was the year 10’s against the Rockhampton Grammer School. This was an extremely hard and close game for the girls.

At full time the teams were a tied at 27-all and they had to play an extra 10 mins, then at the end of 10 mins the teams tied again.

They had to then play on until one teams was two points ahead.

DOG FEES TO INCREASE FROM 1 JULY Rockhampton Regional Council has today announced an increase in annual dog registration fees from 1 July.

Councillor for Planning and Regulation, Grant Mathers, said the annual fee will increase by $10, with the exception of pension card holders which will remain the same.

“We all know that ensuring your dog is registered is an incredibly important part of pet ownership,” Cr Mathers said.

“Because it is so important, we have resisted putting up fees for a number of years, but we’re at the stage now that it’s necessary to ensure we continue to carry out effective animal management for our community.

“Registration fees collected by Council are designed to cover the costs of animal management in our Region.

“The fees go toward the range of animal management services that are offered by Council – from maintaining the animal management centre and rehoming animals to patrols and education programs.

At home with Knox D’Arcy

English-born Knox D’Arcy was an original investor in the Mount Morgan [gold mining] Syndicate, formed in 1882, which turned into a limited liability company on 1 October 1886. The company’s share price skyrocketed in 1888, making Knox D’Arcy, the company’s largest original shareholder, a very rich man.

Knox D’Arcy is pictured (standing centre) with his family in the garden of his beautiful Rockhampton property, ‘Ellen Vannin’*, in about 1885 – when he was a solicitor in Rockhampton and a member of the Mount Morgan Syndicate. He is likely to have inherited the property from his Irish-born father, Rockhampton solicitor, William Francis D’Arcy, who died suddenly at ‘Ellen Vannin’ in 1870 (aged 60).

Knox D’Arcy relocated to England in the late 1880s.

A true entrepreneur, he would then risk his entire Mount Morgan fortune to search for oil in the Persian oilfields, resulting in the establishment of the AngloPersian Oil Company in 1909, which later became British Petroleum (BP).

He never returned to ‘Ellen Vannin’. * Variations in the spelling exist. It’s possible the property was called ‘Ellan Vannin’.

LIBRARY NEWS Dick Roughsey (aka Goobalathaldin Roughsey) Way back in 1974, the celebrated author and illustrator Dick Roughsey (right), or Goobalathaldin Roughsey from the Lardil language group on Mornington Island, visited the North Rockhampton Library to share his love of traditional stories with groups of local school children in an important author tour to the region.

Poised on the cusp of significant literary success, his well-loved picture book The Giant Devil Dingo had just received a Commendation from the CBCA Picture Book of the Year Award in 1974, with The Rainbow Serpent, about Goorialla, the Rainbow Serpent, looking for his own tribe in Cape York Peninsula area, later to win various awards including the 1976 CBCA Picture Book of the Year Award and Fellowship of Australian Writers Patricia Weickhardt Award to an Aboriginal Writer in 1976. Roughsey, who started writing in his 50s, went on to write and illustrate a number of other picture books, poetry books and autobiographies before passing away in 1985 at age 61.

The Rainbow Serpent (immediate right) has been recently re-published in 2011 to entice and delight a new audience of readers, with a number of titles available for lending through Rockhampton Regional libraries. Rare copies of other titles by Roughsey are available for reading in our Rockhampton History Centre, which is open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.

Fast forward to 2021 and the present CBCA Shortlist shows many more wonderful resources written for children by First Nations’ authors.

A captivating title in the CBCA Award for New Illustrator is Shirley Purdie’s My Story, Ngaginybe Jarragbe featuring the autobiographical story of the famous Gija artist as told through her paintings accompanied by Gija and English text. Glorious earth colours convey meaning to the print text in a deeply profound story for all ages.

As a pioneer in protecting and promoting First Nations’ culture, Goobalathaldin Roughsey’s passion for art and supporting cultural heritage projects were important in introducing Aboriginal culture to Australian children.

NAIDOC Week (4 – 11 July) with its theme of Heal Country, calls for all of us to continue to protect our nation’s lands, waters, sacred sites and cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction.

The filmmakers would like to thank them for their tireless hard work, good humour, and most of all patience that is, with our inability to properly use the internet. (Dude, you’re still on mute.)”

Such was the adventurous, pioneering craziness of moviemaking during a global pandemic, where the magic-makers were driven by their need to work, their love of this project and their total and complete faith in the talents and abilities of their fellow, suitably distanced co-workers.

And we must say, rarely have we seen a movie so well received, so loved and raved about as RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON.

Time after time, viewer after viewer...”Ooh, that was soo good!

Heart. They grew apart and often bickered with each other. Time passed...

Long ago, in the idyllic world of Kumandra, people and dragons lived and worked together happily and in harmony. The earth was a paradise. It prospered and thrived under this wonderful partnership, as did their farms and communities.

Then came the dreaded Druun.

Dark and sinister monsters that petrified every living thing upon contact, these Druun spelled the end of paradise, of mankind, of everything... The fear and the threat of total oblivion loomed over the heads of all Kumandra, until the noble dragons stepped up and sacrificed themselves to save humanity.

Now, 500 years later, those same sinister monsters, The Druun have returned; and this time the people don’t have the dragons to protect them. But Raya believes there could be one last dragon.

She’d been training as a warrior under her Dad, Chief Benja whose dream was to reunite all five tribes and remake Kumandra, and she believed that now she was ready.

She had to be! With her wit as sharp as her blade, it was now up to this one lone warrior to track down the last dragon and stop The Druun for good...

Paradise was lost. Kumandra was no more. The people survived but it was not the same.

They split into five separate tribes, each named for their location along a huge, dragon-shaped river- Fang, Talon, Spine, Tail and

Volunteering - We have welcomed some wonderful new volunteers over the last few weeks, who are putting their individual stamp on the space, with their music, and practising their art/craft, etc. We have a fortnightly weekend position available, either one or both days as suits, from 10am -2pm, however we can be flexible should anyone want shorter hours/ earlier start, etc.
