Ten years of consecutive service of five of Mount Morgan’s Queensland Fire and Emergency Service personnel was recognised recently at an awards service in Rockhampton on Wednesday, 8 June.

Dale “Flip” Toby (19 years - National Medal for 15 years service to an Emergency Service and 10 Year Medal), David Lodewikus (32 years Second Service Clasp), Damien Mitchell (10 years Service Medal), Wayne Ireland (first 10 Years Service Clasp) and Kevin Porter (38 years Dilligent and Ethical Service Service Clasp). Collectively the five QFES personnel have more than 120 years of continued service to the QFES. Rural Fire Officer, Kevin Coughran was presented with a medal and certificate for his high level of support to the Mount Morgan Community and key stakeholders throughout Operation Coolburn in 2021.

MOUNT REAL ESTATE STILL IN BOOM PHASE If you are thinking of selling your Mount Morgan house than now is the time to do so according to Discover Real Estate Agent, Angela Douglas.

“Real Estate in Mount Morgan has been in a boom phase since approximately eight weeks after Covid hit Australia,” Angela said.

“The only slow downs we have had are the usual industry wide ones such as the Federal elections, which always slows down the real estate market across the whole country.”

“We started off the pandemic with nothing happening in real estate. It was silent. Then we had people running to here (regional areas) to get a away from Covid. Then people were heading for regional areas to get a from lockdowns and restrictions (QLD). Then we had people moving to the regional areas because they realise they didn’t have to live in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane anymore. They could live wherever they wanted and work from home remotely, still make a good wage but have a lower cost of living by moving regional. You can get so much more dollar for dollar in a regional township than you can the cities, she said.

In general, owner-occupied homes bring more stability to an area. Traditionally for the last near 30 years Mount Morgan has lived off its rental market.

Investors could buy here and be instantly positively geared.

“They could buy the property, rent it out very quickly, cover the rates, mortgage and insurances with a little left over. Now days, people are applying that to a home they live in. They can sell up down south, come here and buy a house outright, renovate it/tidy it up and end up with a very nice house well and truly under $300k,” Angela said.

According to Realestate.com.au there has been a 41 percent increase in the median house sale price this year (2022) alone, while another website shows that the median over the course of the last few years has gone from $89,000 to $140,000.

Ms Douglas said there were very few rentals available.

“As soon as one goes on the market they have multiple applicants,” she said.

“Mount Morgan is a beautiful town, packed full of history, charm and character with good, down to earth people in it. People from other places are now starting to recognise this as the perfect place to live, grow a veggie garden, get some chooks and raise a family.”

Realway Real Estate Principal, Mr Vince Agius said there had been an increase in sales for Mount Morgan during the past 18 months, with an increase of 26.8% in the past 12 months.

“Our agency did not receive a serious hit or low through the pandemic, the activity was still very consistent through this time (2020-2021). We did have to do business slightly different through this time with videos calls or facetime with our clients and/or tenants and ensure all our clients, tenants and trades people were safe through this period,” he said.

“Buyers in the town are a combination of investors and owner occupiers. with a 50/50 scale of buyers looking to start investing in CQ or move into Queensland away from hustle and bustle of big cities. We are working with buyers from VIC, NSW, ACT and WA on weekly basis.”

“There is a demand for rental properties and sale stock in Mount Morgan, We have experienced 0% vacancy rate for several months,” Mr Agius said.

INDIGENOUS GIRLS ACADEMY AT MOUNT MORGAN HIGH Mount Morgan State High School [MMSHS] has starting running an Indigenous Girls Academy (IGA) in partnership with CQU. The IGA runs each Friday at the Yarning Circle. Students had a wonderful time exploring their individual and group values with Program Support Officer – Charise Lousa from CQU. The Indigenous Girls Academy is predominantly aimed at connecting Indigenous Girls to their rich culture, each other and the wider community. “We already provide the infrastructure and services for them because we know they are more a part of our community than they are Livingstone’s. And they want to be part of ours,” he said.

Rockhampton Regional Mayor, Tony Williams and Councillors Cherie Rutherford and Drew Wickerson were in Mount Morgan last Thursday (16 June) and again on Saturday, 18 June espousing the cause of a “yes” vote to bring the Northern Suburbs back to the Rockhampton Regional Council.

Over the next week every enrolled elector in the Rockhampton Region and Livingstone Shire will receive a letter from the Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) asking electors to vote on whether they support the Northern Suburbs coming home.

STATE SCHOOL P & C Athletics Carnival Tuckshop.

The P&C would like to thank all our volunteers who assisted in the canteen at our schools Athletic Carnival on Tuesday, 21 June at Newman Oval. It is always a great fun day, and allows parents and carers the opportunity to assist while also being able to watch the events. Children love to see someone they know serving at tuckshop at school or events, and helping out is very rewarding for individuals who are able. Once again a big thank you!

The Penny-farthing is a bike you will not see at the bike show, maybe next year. Pennys or high Wheelers or ordinary were very popular from 1870 to 1890. The large high front wheel gives then a smooth ride and they can go fast. People used to race them, and enthusiasts still do, to this day. There are a couple of world-renowned Penny-farthing builders in Australia, so if you really what one, you can have it built to your size.

Donuts were taken home last week, and it was wonderful to see so many excited people collecting their orders. We appreciate all who purchased in support of P&C activities.

When the “Safety Bicycles” appeared in the late 1880s the Penny-farthing fell from grace. Easy to see why, it’s a long way to fall. The comfort of pneumatic tires and chain driven gears made many of these old bikes obsolete. Over the years the triangle or diamond frame became the most popular, with the “banana frame” popular for the ladies.

Netballers wave the Mount Flag

The Year 11 and 12 team won easily in their Grand Final.

Mount Morgan State High School had a great season of Netball.

There were many displays of sportsmanship and great netball skills throughout the 8 weeks of competition despite the rain. The Year 7C team made it to the finals and played Rockhampton Girls Grammar School but unfortunately did not come away with a win.

The Year 8 and 9C team showed outstanding sportsmanship throughout all of the weeks. The year 10C team showed their performance in the last quarter to win in the final against Rocky Grammar School on Thursday night.

The year 10C team then played in the Grand Finals against North Rockhampton High School placing as runners up. The game was in very close contention.

Movie Review THE NORTH WATER

It is hard to make the judgement, the statement that this is the very best show I’ve seen in the past year - so let’s just say instead that I’ve certainly not seen anything better than THE NORTH WATER in at least the last twelve months.

It has been a week now since we watched this amazing film and still it invades my thoughts, uninvited.

The unbelievable cast they have managed to assemble represents the cream of serious talent and to see them all together in one epic tale is a gift beyond expectation.

Scottish actor and film-maker Peter Mullan who won our lasting admiration with his gritty and real performances in TYRANNOSAUR and WAR HORSE; English actor Tom Courtenay who has been a genuine movie star since the 1960’s with movies like DOCTOR ZHIVAGO & KING RAT, and he still works full time today with several movies each year; fellow Englishman Stephen Graham won us over way back in 2000 in SNATCH and has drawn us in with his warmth and charisma in many films since then; but the true revelation of the THE NORTH WATER was the amazing transformation of Irish actor Colin Farrell whose performance was as scary as it was mesmerising.

Colin is back. He has never turned

in a better performance than he has in this lead role of Henry Drax, a violent, physically powerful man, all at once charming but lethal, friendly but deadly, likeable but despicable. You can’t help but be drawn to him albeit at your own risk, even though repulsed by what he is. His performance was masterful, dominant, menacing and riveting.

A British, English-Canadian and French-Canadian coproduction, THE NORTH WATER is magnificent to look at and it takes us to a part of the world we rarely see on film, The NorthWest passage. This is a route through the Artic Ocean that was long thought to be a myth, with the USA and Canada on one side and Russia on the other, connecting the Atlantic with the Pacific Ocean.

A very harsh part of the world with almost no people but mountains of ice and a multitude of enormous, hungry polar bears.

Henry Drax is a harpooner, a savage killer and a brutish force of nature. In 1859 there were no harpoon cannons. The killing was done up close and personal, by hand with a large, barbed spear, from a timber rowboat called a whaler.

It was cold-blooded, ruthless and very dangerous work

that required hard and powerful men, and Drax’s philosophies, his total amorality had been shaped to fit the harshness of his world. He is setting sail on a whaling expedition to the Artic with Patrick Sumner, a disgraced ex-army surgeon who has signed up as the ship’s doctor.

Hoping to escape the horrors of his past, Sumner finds himself on an ill-fated journey, trapped on a ship with a murderous psychopath.

In search of redemption, he had hoped to lose himself in the tough physicality of the voyage, but instead his story becomes a harsh struggle for survival in the ferocious elements of the Artic wasteland.

THE NORTH WATER is a long show but it is totally captivating and you won’t want to leave it, so be sure to put it on early. The censors often baffle me. This is without question an R-rated movie but they’ve given it an MA15+ for ‘strong themes, violence, coarse language and hunting violence’.

Just be careful who watches it with you.

YEPPOON PROBUS CLUB VISITS Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc [MMPAD] hosted hosted 32 members of the Yeppoon Probus Club (left) on Thursday, 16 June.

Probus members were given a full guided tour of the Railway Station (including 3D movie and soundscape) as well as a ‘hop on bus” tour of Mount Morgan before having lunch at Grand Hotel.

This is the first large tour of the year, with additional tours expected in the coming months.

LORNA SET TO CELEBRATE 103 YEARS

She lived through the Great Depression and a World War, witnessed man walk on the moon, and observed amazing technological advancements in our society.

And soon Lorna Craney will celebrate her 103rd birthday!

The Mount Morgan woman will turn 103 on 11 July – making her the same age as world famous companies Electrolux, Bentley luxury cars, Hilton Hotels, and United Artists movie studio!

Lorna, who lives at the Carinity Summit Cottages aged care community, was born in the bush near Wagga Wagga in rural New South Wales in 1919.

In the week she was born, Australian tennis player Gerald Patterson won his first Wimbledon title, the first Citroën motor car was sold, and the first two-way crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by airplane took place.

Lorna has lived in Mount Morgan for 35 years and enjoyed playing lawn bowls before moving into Carinity Summit Cottages aged care eight years ago. She has six grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren.

She is one of around 4,500 people aged 100 years or over living in Australia. When she became a member of the exclusive ‘100 Club’ for centenarians in 2019, she celebrated with a party, birthday cake, and a letter from the Queen – as well as a special present.

Lorna marked her special milestone by fulfilling a dream: seeing the sights of Mount Morgan while cruising around as a passenger in a classic 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible sports car.

Lorna is the third oldest resident living in Carinity’s 12 aged care communities across Queensland, which are located between Townsville and the Gold Coast.

Lorna lived through the Great Depression, raised by her father and grandfather before moving into a convent until she was 10.

Lorna moved to Brisbane as a teenager and later supported the war effort by working at Archerfield Airfield.

While in Brisbane she met her future husband James Craney, a Mount Morgan boy. The couple had two children and lived at Salisbury in Brisbane until the 1970s before relocating to Mission Beach in north Queensland, where Lorna worked at the local motel.

LIBRARY NEWS Free library programs @ Mount Morgan Library We know you visit Mount Morgan Library for the great selection of resources and services and the friendly welcoming atmosphere, but did you know that if you happen to drop in, you may also find that a free library activity is taking place?

Take a few minutes to see what is on offer in the space and join the fun – the sessions are open to all ages, interests and abilities.

Read‘n’Rhyme story sessions are held every fortnight at 9:30am on Monday.

The children’s corner of the library is set up with cushions, scarves, a bubblemaking machine and a felt board, and provides the perfect place for families with young children to join in the fun. These bouncy interactive early literacy sessions feature singing, playing, talking and reading stories. Upcoming Read‘n’Rhyme sessions will be on Monday 30 June, 4 July and 18 July.

Crafters’ Circle is a new adult group which takes place every Monday afternoon from 2:00pm. Bring your current craft project along and settle in for conversation and companionship with other craft enthusiasts in the comfort and warmth of the library space. While

LEGO® Club targets builders of all ages and is a free maker space with lots of blocks provided to participants every Wednesday afternoon from 3:00 to 4:30 pm. The back of the library is transformed into a hive of energetic STEM activity with a host of creative constructions made during the afternoon. LEGO® Club is a drop-in session with no bookings required.

The libraries also host other information sessions on an irregular basis across all branches.

Currently, Financial Information Seminars are being held, with a very successful session at Mount Morgan on 3 June.

But don’t worry if you missed it – Gracemere Library is hosting an Age Pension and Your Choices session on Monday 18 July, starting at 9.30am. Presented by a representative from Services Australia, this session will cover retirement choices, income and assets, deeming, gifting and work bonuses – as well as online services and concessions.

Come along to the session on Wednesday, 24 August from 10:00am and have a chat to your local officers about crime prevention.

These informal outreach activities are designed to reduce barriers about talking to the police and are free and open to all.

But it’s not just programs on offer! Every month there are two new activity booklets to pick up, one with word puzzles and trivia quizzes to challenge all ages, and one full of colouring, craft and jokes. Based around what’s happening in the month, the June booklets are chocka-block with winter, World Environment Day, World Rainforest Day and Rockhampton show activities.

Colouring competitions are also held throughout the year, often in association with the Pilbeam Theatre or cinema. Pick up an entry form for the latest competition and go in the draw to win free tickets to the show.

Gracemere and Mount Morgan Early Years Place The Gracemere and Mount Morgan Early Years Place offers targeted parent and play programs for local families and children aged 0 to eight years.

The purpose of these programs is to support families in strengthening their relationships and attachments with their children – whilst connecting them to relevant services and other members of the community.

These programs are designed and run by Christine, Zoe, and Michelle; whom all share experience in and a passion for the early childhood development profession.

The program timetable changes every school term and is available upon registration of interest via Facebook or phone. Services include onsite playgroups, parent and infant sessions, Queensland Child Health Nurse check-ups, mobile playgroups in the Bouldercombe and Gracemere areas and individualised support where necessary.

POLICE NEWS

Greetings to the Mount Morgan community. I just wanted to touch on a few reminders in relation to road and community safety.

Firstly, a short science lesson regarding sound waves. They actually travel further in cold weather which is not good news for your neighbours should you decide to host a noisy party. Please be mindful of this and show respect for neighbours trying to sleep.

We are still seeing quite a few drivers being detected travelling over the speed limit, especially along James Street. Bar the school zone times, the speed limit is 60. Mount Morgan is densely populated along James Street and there is no reason to be travelling 60+. Please leave a few minutes earlier if you want to arrive at your destination ahead of schedule.

Quick reminder to keep your homes and businesses locked at all times. We are seeing some petty theft offences around town which is surprising considering the quality of CCTV cameras in some of our businesses. If you are going to steal you may as well smile since you will be recorded and receiving a visit from the Police shortly after.
