Mine Drill Press

Pride in your Town This edition we are going back in time to the radio station of the ABC in the 50’s and 60’s or there about.

It is a reflection on a man who was very popular at that time and so well known to most householders.

His name was Russ Tyson. Russ was born in Brisbane in 1920 and died at the old age of 94 in 2014. His first broadcasting appearance was at the age of seven when he had to shout “Peanuts Lollies and Chocolates” on 4 QG. He spent five years war service in the Indonesian area and then after returning he joined the ABC in 1939.

He became very well known for his “Breakfast Session” and “Hospital Hour”. In his lifetime he was an untiring worker for charities and was an Honorary Board Member of the Queensland Society for Crippled children, and many more. We have taken pieces from his book “Russ Tyson’s New Philosophy” printed in 1970. They make for enjoyable reading with humour and deep thoughts.

What is a Grandma?

A grandmother is a lady who has no children of her own, so she likes other people’s little girls. (A Grandfather is a man Grandmother. He goes for little walks with the boys and they talk fishing and things like that).

Grandmas don’t have anything to do except be there. It is enough if they drive us to the supermarket where the pretend horse is, and have lots of coins ready. Or, if they take us for walks, they slow down past pretty leaves and caterpillars.

They wear glasses and funny underwear.

They don’t have to be smart, only answer questions like why dogs hate cats, and how come God isn’t married. They don’t talk visitors talk like visitors do, because it is hard to understand. When they read to us, they don’t skip words, or mind if it is the same story again. Everybody should try and have a Grandmother, because they are the only grown-ups who have time.

I found this old drill press in someone’s garage. I was told by the current owner that he bought it of an old bloke; this guy claimed it came from the Mount Morgan mine workshop; I have no reason not to believe him.

Say “I think I’ll put on the kettle”.

It is made by W. E Tozer & Sons Engineers, Machinery and Electrical Merchants East St Rockhampton. This company would have been like a Bunnings, but on steroids, they sold picks, axes, pumps, brass fittings for plumbers, welding rods and fluxes as well as engineering tools like this drill. Tozer’s engineering works was started in 1910, by Mr W. E. Tozer, he emigrated from London in 1899. He worked around CQ in mining operations until moving to Rockhampton. In 1931 he built a modern shop on the site to cater for the retail trade, his 3 sons were made partners in 1936.

The drill originally ran on 3 phase power, but it was converted to run on 240 volts after it was removed from the mine. To adjust the speed of the drill the operator Ode to the Kettle.

The company did lots of engineering work around CQ, including work for the US army during WW2, and of course around Mount Morgan and the mine. In November 1954 the company sold out to Intercolonial Boring Co. Ltd, a Brisbane based company.

So going by the above information this drill press would have been delivered to the Mount Morgan mine between 1936 and 1954, it’s a nice piece of history.

Top year Students were:Students, parents, teachers and the community came together on Wednesday the 2nd November 2016 to recognise the achievements of students from Mount Morgan State High School. The School of Arts resounded with applause for the entrance of Staff and the Graduating Class of 2016.

After the strains of the National Anthem had faded Principal Trevor Rickertt addressed the attentive audience who were eager to show their support for the wonderful accomplishments of the town’s school students and staff.

Over 160 Academic and Merit Awards were presented to students on the night for excellence in varied Academic, Cultural and Sporting fields over numerous subjects.

School Patron Miss Irene Sturgess proudly presented the Prestigious Tompky’s Memorial Prize for Dux of the School to Kiera Martin-Bray who also took out the Gladstone Port Senior Bursary and the CQ Vice Chancellor Rockhampton Award.

The Caltex Alrounder Award was presented to Zara Benjamin.

Rotary Bursaries were presented to Joshua Grange, Nicholas Van Dreumel, Raven Tattan-Dullahide, Janaya Bray, Tara-Lee Hoani & Annalise Cant.

Lest We Forget 11/11/2016 98th Anniversary of Armistice which ended the First World War. (1914-1918)

Each year on this day

Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11 am, in memory of those who had died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.

Anzac Park, Mount Morgan echoed with the haunting and emotional sounds of the Last Post and residents gathered to pay their respects to those who had given their lives for freedom.

The Last Post is one of a number of bugle calls in military tradition that mark the phases of the day. While Reveille signals the start of a soldier’s day, the Last Post signals its end.

Mike Johnston compared the ceremony and the address was by Lay Minister Peter Edman.

The 5th Mount Morgan Light Horse Troop provided the gun salute of honour.

Many who attended the ceremony laid wreaths on the Cenotaph and their clothes were adorned with the familir red poppies.

During the First World War, red poppies were among the first plants to spring up in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium. The poppy soon became widely accepted throughout the allied nations as the flower of remembrance to be worn on Armistice Day. After the second World War the name was changed to Remembrance Day to commemorate all the fallen. suffered for Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts.

At 11 am on the 11th November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare.

The allied armies had driven the German invaders back, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months.

In November the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted allied terms that amounted to unconditional surrender.

In 1997, Governor-General Sir William Deane issued a proclamation formally declaring 11 November to be Remembrance Day, urging all Australians to observe one minute’s silence at 11 am on 11 November each year.

2016 Premier’s Reading Challenge

Golf Club News

The Kindy Investigator’s Classroom children aged 3 to 5 years attending Red Frog 4 Early Childhood Education were invited to join in the 2016 Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Kindy age children can experience books through shared reading, listening to stories or reading picture books.

The aim for the 2016 challenge is to reach a total of two million books read. As well as being fun, the challenge aims to boost children’s literacy skills by encouraging children to read widely for pleasure and learning, to develop their imagination, and to cultivate a passion for literature.

Every student who completed the challenge received a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier. The Mayor Margaret Strelow once again presented the Kindy Investigator children with their Certificate of Achievement.

Kindy Student AmbahLeigh Wright presented the Mayor with a Thank You card, finger printed and signed by the children. Following the presentation invited family and friends enjoyed morning tea to celebrate this special occasion.

Rodeo News

Mount Morgan Rodeo Assoc held an afternoon of barefoot bowls at the Dee Bowls club last Saturday. An enthusiast crowd completed 10 ends with the winning team being Sarah (Silver Wattle Caravan Park) and Wayne(Golden Nugget Hotel) . The booby prize went to Ian (Mount Morgan Post Office) and his team.

Nancy Daniels from the rodeo association “a great time was had by all and they certainly seemed to love my hamburgers, so I’d say it was a another great day” Big News for the Month of December. The Mount Morgan Rodeo Association will be having a ham wheel outside IGA every Saturday in December. Four Spins every week!

Saturday the 5th of November saw the Rodeo Association hold their fundraiser Ambrose tournament.

Due to some big events either side of the weekend, we had a smaller than usual turnout, however managed to raise $150 for the Rodeo Association. A lot of fun was had though, with Jai Browne and Scotty Elliot taking out the title.

Novelty Family Fun Day. Last weekend was a fundraiser for a deserving family to help keep them together. There were many fun events, such as the Marshmallow Drive, Pirate Play and Soooper Looong Driver Tee Off. Get out of Jail Free cards kept things interesting, and everyone had a thoroughly good time. A big thanks to the Rodeo Association who supplied and cooked their famous sausage sizzle once again, we all love a good snag on the barbie, and you guys do a great sausage sanga!

Congratulations go to Travis Ireland and Jai Browne who were overall winners, Simon Moss and Cody Brown nett winners, Kathryn Trevor, Jesse Brown and Nathan O’Brian for longest drives and Cody Brown for taking out the Marshmallow Drive. So wonderful to see our experienced members teaming up with our junior players, I am sure much useful advice was given and learned. Well done on a fantastic day. A driving force behind the event was Melissa Lee, and the $750 donated to help the cause, could not have been accomplished without her. Thankyou to all for your hard work!

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted” as the great Aesop once said. These words were brought to fruition when Mark Ricks of Feel Good Promotions and Eve-lyn Rogers from the Golden Mount Festival, showed there is a lot of kindness in this world and in particular Mount Morgan. On Sunday 13th November customers and visitors to the IGA Supermarket were offered free coffee, tea, water and cordial as part of “Kindness Week” promotions.

In the spirit of the day, Amy arrived with slices of watermelon for Captain Kindness and Kindness Girl to hand out to everyone. It is wonderful to see the public get involved in the cause. Thank you everyone.

Ingredients:6 Tablespoons of butter ½ cup caster sugar 1 egg 1 ¾ cup of self raising flour ½ cup jam Pinch salt Method:Beat butter and sugar to a cream.

Add the egg and beat well. Add vanilla.

Gradually add sifted flour and salt.

Mix into a stiff paste. Take small pieces of mixture and roll into balls.

Placed on greased trays. Make a hollow in each with the floured end of a wooden spoon.

Place a little jam in each biscuit.

Bake in a moderate oven until golden brown.

New Music School Coming Soon Mount Morgan will soon welcome a new business to Morgan Street when Cammbo’s School of Music opens its door. Local identity Peter Camm is expanding his already successful business to include Mount Morgan as well as Rockhampton.

85 Morgan Street, next door to the Historical Museum, will soon echo with the sound of music when lessons begin in the store. Peter will offer Guitar lessons in all styles from beginners to advanced and beginner sax, clarinet and trumpet. The store will also offer guitar strings, reeds, and music books for sale.

Peter has kindly agreed to bring some friends along and entertain at the Christmas Tree Festival.

The Baralaba and District Historical Group Inc made a one-hour bus trip to Mt Morgan on Saturday, 29 October. For some travellers in the group there were memories of five-hour railway trips from Baralaba to Rockhampton via Mt Morgan. Morning tea in the pleasant surroundings and amenities at the Dam was a good start to a day divided between the two museums, where hosts Rhonda and Gwen and their staff were very welcoming. Lunch on the railway platform was a perfect feast.

However, this is not just a recommendation for all other groups to take advantage of Mt Morgan hospitality. My main purpose here is to point out some historical facts which link the two towns of Mt Morgan and Baralaba.

In drought years of the early 1900s coal seams were discovered in or near the bed of the Dawson River. Roughly 20 years later there were two operating underground coal mines in Baralaba with some of that coal being transported by rail to Mt Morgan. One of the two mines, the State Coal Mine was totally devastated in the 1928 Dawson flood. The second was owned and operated by the Mt Morgan Gold Mining Company Limited with various name and shaft changes until it became the Dawson Valley Colliery. It was closed in 1969 when the Mt Morgan mine converted to diesel fuel for its smelters.

Many early miners and their families moved from Mt Morgan to settle in Baralaba from about 1916 onwards.

Baralaba Railway Station Mine managers, engineers, builders, electricians, apprentices and office staff would be based in either Mt Morgan or Baralaba as their jobs required.

In July 1917 the Dawson Valley Rail line connecting Mt Morgan and Baralaba was officially opened. It was to have two main functions with the first being to service the coal mines.

The second was to provide stations and sidings for people in remote farming communities like Buneru, Rannes, Kokotungo and Kooemba, all familiar names to anyone who travelled the Mt Morgan-Baralaba line before its closure in 1987.

Timetables varied but initially there were three coal trains a week, with passenger services on Fridays and Sundays. As with mining, there were many railway employees who were based in both Mt Morgan and Baralaba.

The Baralaba History Group focuses on collecting and digitising photographs as a means of recording Baralaba’s history. If you have any mining and railway photos of our towns and our shared history, would you please consider letting us copy them to add to our collection.

2017 is an important year for Baralaba when we will celebrate 100 years since being officially named in 1917. A ‘Centenary Edition’ calendar with historic photos of town and district has been produced for sale, while a special day will be held in July at the Baralaba Historic Village, to commemorate the coming of the railway to town.
