Pride in your Town

The following is a paper I discovered recently and perhaps Baree was in the shire of Calliungal originally but around locals would like to read it also. We have only used a little of the full story. If any local would like to read the full contents a copy will be available at the local library or at the Railway Museum / Tourist Information Centre.

The story of Baree, written by the late Fred Cole in 1973.

Baree is a small suburb of Mount Morgan and is two miles from the Mount Morgan Post Office. In the early days it was known as the two mile. Some of the “oldies” say that Mount Morgan was a suburb of Baree. The word “Baree” is aboriginal and means “winding creek” so named because the creek known as Dairy Creek winds its way from Moongan to meet the Dee River near the football grounds. The name Dairy Creek probably was so named because of the dairy farms along its bank.. The highest population figure would probably have been around the years 1914 to 1916 or 18 and would have been 500 to 600.

The area would have covered approx. one square mile.

1930-31 the town council and Calliungal shires merged and Mr Henry Searle became first Chairman of the new Council, Mount Morgan. In Baree there existed an organisation known as the W.P.O. similar to the present known A.L.P. The W.P.O. stood for “Workers Political Organisation from his interest in the organization Mr James Petersen became a Member of Parliament.

The first church was the Church of England in 1903 and the Presbyterian followed in 1909 and the Catholic in 1910.

All churches were built in the same street. The Salvation Army held open air services there also. All churches are now gone. Baree was well known for a great deal of musical talent, and also for some beautiful gardens of flowers, grapevines and fruit trees. It had the service of its own Taxi service and Police Station.

Sport was very keen and at one stage there were six tennis courts in the area. In 1973 when Fred wrote these words the tennis court at Andy Scott’s was still playable. Many The railway line was through Baree about 1898 and each excellent tennis players came from the hills of Baree. of the Railway bridges had its own particular name. Dairy Another sport that was prominent was football and like creek runs under no less than six railway bridges. tennis some very talented footballers came from the area.

It was at Mrs Mc Arthur’s station managers house that a Red Cross Soup kitchen was set up during the terrible Bubonic plague epidemic that some may remember.

Quite a few locals died from it. We as kids used to take our billycans of hot soup to people who were sick.

Quite a lot of alluvial gold had been taken from the creeks around Baree. A favourite spot was where Kangaroo gully runs into Dairy Creek, the spot was known as “Little Cracow”. The Story of Baree is a history worth reading especially if you are a local of many years. This article just whetts your appetite.

Farewell to Philippa Page

Someone leaving town bought this in. I had never seen one before, but I think it is so cool.

It’s a Dux- Episcop, made in Western Germany, in the late 1940s and 50s. It’s made from Bakerlite, so it is a nice brown colour.

This machine was the forerunner of the overhead projector, so it works the same way as one. It has a series of mirrors and light to transfer the image onto a screen, there is a white turning button at the front side to regulate the clearness of the picture. But works by placing a photo on the table, the projector sits on top and the photo gets shown on the screen or wall. It works really well. I was surprised; the image is not huge, about 1 square meter. I do not know if this was sold as a toy or for family fun. But you could get your photo album out and project each photo on to the screen, just like a slide night, yeh!!!

This concept, projecting something onto a screen or wall was invented in the 1750’s so it has been around for a long time. Several scientists started to use an opaque projector; it could project a clear image of small objects and opaque images.

Mount Morgan farewelled one of our familiar young faces recently when Philippa Page, daughter of Schae and Kerrilyn Page from newsXpress Mount Morgan jetted off to the USA to work for 12 months.

Philippa is the middle daughter of the three Page girls and graduated from The Cathedral College in 2016. After an intensive week of training and inductions in New York, Philippa will be calling Boston, Massachusetts home as an Au Pair to a family with three children.

While it’s a daunting thought for Schae and Kerrilyn it is also very exciting that Philippa is combining her love of children with her love of travel to set off into the bigger world.

Philippa learnt of the Au Pair program when an ambassador for the agency, Cultural Care Au Pair, came to the school and explained the opportunities for travel, study and work overseas as an Au Pair.

The Hub and Queensland Health will be hosting the inaugural monthly Baby Clinic

After an application and interview process the matching process began and Philippa matched with a family very quickly. She will be living in a suburb called Belmont, very near Harvard and Cambridge Universities and is looking forward to exploring all the Arts, history and culture that the area is rich in.

It’s not all work and play there is some study involved so she will be looking at either further her Personal Training study or finding something else of interest to enrol in when she gets there.

Fire Brigade Open Day On Sunday the 27th August 2017, Team Rusty Bumpers and the Mount Morgan Fire Services combined forces to hold an open day at the Mount Morgan Fire Station in Morgan Street.

It was an exciting family fun day with fire and rescue demonstrations, Emergency Services displays, food, raffles, stalls, music and face painting for the children. CQ Ghostbusters were also on patrol.

Tom and Scott Newlands (Team Rusty Bumpers) were on hand to raise funds for the Cancer Council. Scott and his Father Tom are entrants in the Mystery Box Rally which leaves Dubbo on the 25th November 2017, travelling over 2,500klm. Teams have no idea the roads they will travel along, and only learn of their next destination each morning. Each team is required to raise $3000 to enter and the cars must be 25 years or older, but not vintage.

When asked why he was determined to do this Scott replied, “We lost my Brother Jamie from Cancer five years ago and Cancer affects so many people these days.” Scott and Tom will be driving Jamies 1974 Toyota Celica.

What a Wattle Day !

A clear crisp morning and blue skies. Perfect weather for the Mount Morgan Wattle Fun Day and Village Markets. That’s what many visitors thought as they headed down to the Mount Morgan Historical Railway on Saturday the 2nd September 2017. Wattle Day is celebrated Nationally and Mount Morgan is the only town in Queensland that celebrates this day!

Many came for the entertainment, others to grab a last minute gift for Father’s Day while others brought the young ones to enjoy the amusement rides and balloon twisting, courtesy Matt Winning and the High School Students.

Deptuy Mayor Cherie Rutherford officially opened the event at 9am, and MMPAD President John Steinberger presented the MMPAD Wattle Day award to local resident Jim Gould. Congratulations Jim. There was plenty to see and do during the day, with displays from the Mount Morgan SES, LAC and Queensland Fire & Rescue Service. Carbine Resources provided update information on the progress of the Mount Morgan Mine Project.

The crowds were entertained throughout the day by a variety of talented local artists. A big thank you to Di Coburne who was also the MC, Alma Graham, Stevie Singer, Caitlin Jamieson, Red Frog Child Care, Sing Australia, Jim Lynch and Peter and Suzie Camm who gave freely of their time.

No one left hungry with Devonshire teas,burgers, sausages on bread and soft serve ice-creams proving popular.

Market stalls provided a wide selection of merchandise for the public, including cooking, preserves, fruit and vegetables, jewellery, clothing, plants, garden ornaments, leather work, candles, aromatic oils, woodwork, Tupperware, handicrafts, embroidery, Mine Tours, scrapbooking, information and raffles.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the event. The stall holders, the volunteers, committee members, the Entertainers, the emergency service personnell, 4RO, 4YOU and especially the public who supported the event and helped to make to the Mount Morgan Wattle Fun Day & Village Markets a great success.

Motors on the Mount SUNDAY 24th SEPTEMBER 2017 9AM MOUNT MORGAN SHOW GROUNDS

The Mount Morgan Rodeo Association, in conjunction with the All Classic Motor Club will be holding their Annual Car Show on Saturday the 24th September 2017, at the Mount Morgan Show Grounds. The event is open to all makes, from hot rods, classics, new and old muscle cars and bikes. Trophies will be awarded across twelve catagories.

Entry to the show is free to competitors and $2 for the public.

There will be plenty to see and do with market stalls and a swap meet on the day. Errol Baker said. “We’ve had wonderful support from Grantley Jack through NRG Industrial. Grunta, being raised in Mt Morgan was keen to help sponsor the show. Trad Duffy from AOK upholstery is another sponsor”.

Visitor Views

In 1995 Marten and Marjolein Gorter met while on holiday in Alice Springs. Twenty-two years later they returned to Australia, this time with their two sons Jeroen who is 15 and Niels who is 14.

On the 7th August, they called into the Tourist Information Centre while waiting for the TMC Tour Bus to collect them.

The family is from Schiedam in the Netherlands and began their journey from Melbourne, travelling North to Ayres Rock and Darwin then back down to Mount Morgan, then on to Frazer Island and eventually to Sydney.

When asked what they thought about Australia they replied “We love it!”. Marjolein said “We saved up fifteen years to be able to come on this holiday.”

New look CBD starts to take shape

The upgrade of Mount Morgan’s CBD will begin to take shape over the upcoming weeks, as above ground works commence from this month.

Movie Review

We thought that the filmmaker Otto Bell must have visited the region and set all of the events and circumstances up so that he could return the following year and film the story as it unfolded.

But no, when you watch ‘the making of’ you discover that he just rocked up, got acquainted, and started filming… The truly amazing story that followed simply unfolded naturally, as it really happened. In fact on the day Otto turned up and explained that he wanted to make a film, Aisholpan’s dad Nurgaiv said “We were planning on capturing a wild eaglet later today; is that the sort of thing that would interest you?” Incredible!

To Call THE EAGLE HUNTRESS a documentary though is incorrect.

Rather it is a reality film with a naturally flowing, overarching story that will keep you spellbound ‘til the final scene.

You can’t help but bond with our little hero, an incredibly brave and very bold thirteen-year-old girl named Aisholpan.

She’s a Kazakh girl living in the spectacular mountains of Mongolia.

The men in her family have been famous eagle hunters (they hunt WITH eagles, not FOR them) for seven generations and Aisholpan, with her dad Nurgaiv’s support wants to be the first female EAGLE HUNTRESS, and she wants to compete in the annual Eagle Festival at Ulgi.

Her family are modern-day nomads who spend their summers with their livestock, living in a yurt in the Altai Mountains. For the winters they pack up and move to their house in town (they’re not silly!)

Their Society, their community, their culture however, tends to be very conservative and Aisholpan is going to meet some resistance to her plans from the crusty old and proud eagle hunters who hold with the tradition that this ancient art is only for the physically stronger of the species…

Welfare Bowls News Local Bowlers are currently enjoying the best time of the year with the mild winter and the greens are running freely. Club Greenkeeper, Dave Thornton recently returned from The Champion of Champion Singles Zone Finals in Bundaberg. Although only becoming the runner up, he had a fantastic experience meeting other players and competing in this event.

Next up coming event is The Ladies Friendship day planned for Monday 2nd of October, the ladies from the club have been busy organizing this day and we hope to fill the green with people from all over CQ .

Wildlife Matters

Trish and Greg are taking a break from wildlife caring for a while. At least until next year. We have been caring now for nearly 18 years and cared for thousands of animals, with very little time off.

We wish to thank those people who have supported us. It has been greatly appreciated.

Mount Morganites Fly High

Brothers Australian Rules Football Club, held their presentation night on Friday the 25th August at the Dreamtime Centre, Rockhampton, a night where Mount Morgan talent certainly shone. Two Mount Morgan families came away from the award nights with armfuls of trophies.

Alan Tull, (pictured right) received the Under 15’s Encouragement Award. Blayze Chalson was awarded the Under 17’s Best and Fairest and the Reserve Grade - Most Courageous Trophy. Ernie Tull received the Under 13’s Best and Fairest Award and the Fay / Tull family were awarded the Most Dedicated Club Person Perpetual Trophy. Nora Fay received the Most Dedicated Award for the Ladies Team. What a great achievement! Congratulation to all.

Mount Morgan is also well represented in the Brothers ladies team, with seven ladies from Mount Morgan for the ‘Sisters’. For the first time in six years the club competed in the Preliminary Finals against Panthers.

These ladies (Nora, Whitney, Chelsea, Emma, Victoria, Shanoa and Corrina) were selected for the Central Queensland Squad, and Corrina and Chelsea have been selected for the Queensland Team.

Cambo’s School of Music

The Brothers Australian Rules Football Club have just finished the 2017 season, however there will be a sign on in February 2018 for the next season. The club has teams from Under 7’s through to Under 17’s, Reserve and A Grade Women. To register for next season phone 04 09 450403.

Great news for anyone interested in learning guitar, Cambo’s School of Music is once again open for business. Peter Camm had taken some time off to promote son Blayze’s footy career (see photo & story above). Now that the AFL footy season has finished teaching will now begin in earnest on Saturday the 9th September 2017.

Peter’s primary instrument is guitar and he will teach from beginners to advanced, all styles including improvisation and classical. Pete is also able to take students through AMEB, (Australian Musical Examinations Board) for theory and practical exams. This multi-instrumentalist will be able to teach beginners in piano, saxophone, clarinet, banjo, mandolin, flute and drums.

“We are looking for people to form the inaugural Mount Morgan Ukulele Group, with emphasis on fun and meeting others with ukuleles’ of course, over coffee and I’ll make the scones”. Pete said.

Pete is presently teaching guitar at the Mount Morgan High School on Fridays and has formed a school choir at the Mount Morgan Primary School, for the MMPAD Sara Storer Concert on Saturday 7th October at the School of Arts.
