FASTBACK MUSTANG WINS SECOND CLUB CHAMPION AWARD

Front Cover Story The Mount Morgan Rodeo Association’s 2019 Motors on the Mount Car Show and Shine was moved to an exciting new venue this year. Thirty-two cars and seven bikes paraded through Mount Morgan streets to the Central State School grounds right in the centre of town to be displayed and carefully judged amid the market and food stalls present.

A $5.00 registration fee allowed entry for judging in any of the eight categories, and many took advantage of the opportunity to register for more then one. It was Saturday, 21 September and the conditions were, unfortunately very dry.

What little grass was left crumbled underfoot, and it wasn’t long before the many entries, some polished and preened to perfection on arrival, were coated with a light film of fine dust raised by the movement of many spectators through the grounds.

But the broken overcast sky kept the temperature down and the cooling breeze was welcome.

But short handed or not we were determined to be both fair and consistently thorough and the time had to be taken. We apologise for any disruption our time overrun may have caused.

Results were in some cases anticipated and in others surprising. Tim Horwell`s (pictured below) custom Harley Davidson, was so beautifully modified, detailed and presented that it swept away first prize in all three bike categories, as well as the Peoples’ Choice for the day.

Best Hot Rod and Best Ute went to a red thirties dodge pickup with a vintage Indian motorcycle in the back as a bonus. Best custom car went to a modified Subaru WRX turbo, and the work in progress award to a HQ Statesman project coming along nicely.

A respectful variety of machines were presented, from the original old Aussie Holdens and Fords, through customised and modified sports cars, utes and pickups, street machines, classics and works in progress, to gleaming hot rods and muscle cars and some fabulous bikes. Judging was based on a score out of 10 for each of the five criteria to a maximum of 50 points. And competition in some instances was as close as it could get.

The largest category of Classic Cars, was hotly contended, but in the end taken away by last years winner, Michael Stagg`s fabulous Purple 1970 Fastback Mustang.

The fastidious attention to the smallest details and the comprehensive and perfect execution of this project afforded it a deserved points advantage amid some stiff competition, and this entry took the judges choice (Club Champion) home as well.

Congratulations and many thanks to the entries and also Richard Grist for the entertainment throughout the morning. All reports and opinions on the day were most favourable, especially the new school venue. And deepest gratitude to the tireless team at the Rodeo Association, who once again turned out in numbers with enthusiasm on the day.

POLICE NEWS The temperature is starting to increase and as such so is our fire danger. We have already had one grass fire in town on Friday night (13 September) among others.

Thankfully no property was damaged or persons injured.

The Police would like to remind everyone to remain vigilant and prepared. If you see something suspicious, please let us know or call Policelink – 131444.

Unfortunately, not all fires are accidental. Please also ensure

you obtain permits for any fires or back burning you intend to do.

We have also had a recent spate of graffiti around town with most offenders identified and prosecuted. Please ensure any spray paint cans you have at home are properly secured and can’t be stolen by curious individuals.

It is unfortunate that not everyone has a sense of pride for Mount Morgan.

When you damage property around town, whether by spraying paint or otherwise it is an insult to yourselves and the community.

We need to do our best to look after each other and the town.

The Mount Morgan Police would like to pass on their thanks to the majority of the community that are law abiding and doing their best to contribute to our lovely township.

We recently had the main street upgraded (which is still on-going) which will hopefully lead to increased visitors.

This is good not only for the community but local businesses.

ROCKY REEFS FOR DAM - A BOOST FOR FISHING Local anglers could soon be reeling in more and larger fish thanks to a project to establish a productive fishery in a Rockhampton Regional Council dam.

Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke said artificial rock pile reefs had been installed in the Mount Morgan Dam on the Dee River to provide a suitable habitat into which golden perch fingerlings could be released.

“Rock pile reefs are designed to provide newly stocked fingerlings with a place to recover from transport stress and acclimatise to their new environment while providing shelter from predators,” Mr Furner said.

What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth (sound familiar?), but - instead of becoming a hero and a saviour to mankind he proved to be something far more sinister?

Mr Furner said the Mount Morgan project was the latest part of DAF’s Habitat Enhancement Research Program which commenced in February 2018.

“The program will ultimately provide a blueprint of the type and location of fish attraction structures to be installed in dams,” Mr Furner said.

Pride in Your Town With the summer days ahead of us and possibly the country being still dry and dusty, thoughts wander to the famous poet, Dorothea Mackellar’s poem, “My Country” with the opening line of the second verse, “I love a sunburnt country”. Her first verse speaks about the green of the English country side and she finishes “My love is otherwise”. Her words are so appropriate at present because Mount Morgan as well as half the country is sunburnt.

Dorothea Mackellar was brought up on a property named “Kurrumbede”, which was owned by her parents. The property lies in the fertile plains of the Namoi River, 26 miles from Gunnedah in North West New South Wales.

Her Dad, Sir Charles Mackellar was knighted for his work with public health in the NSW state Parliament.

Dorothea was born into wealth and privileges and travelled extensively with her parents and could speak five languages. At home she became an excellent horsewoman, riding side saddle,

and living an outdoor life but she was always ready to speak her mind and from an early age loved “The Power of Words”.

During outdoor rides that she was enjoying Dorothea quoted these words about a sunset and a storm, “A gorgeous flaming feather sunset”, and “a blue black and silver storm”.

Then the property owners became the Whitehaven Coal Company but their future was interrupted by a local Society of concerned people who loved “Kurrumbede” and asked the Coal Company to look beyond the bottom line and preserve an iconic part of Australia’s history. Initially the Society thought their chance of success was between nil and less than nil.

They received support from people far and wide to keep Dorothea’s literary alive. The first good news they received was that the Coal Mine would donate $500 000 for the restoration of the wonderful gardens that “Kurrumbede” was noted for in earlier times.

1926, Dorothea, now 41 goes and resides at Lovett Bay, on Pittwater where she cares for her deaf Mother. Her Innocent and untroubled days are now over and she wrote sparingly in her diaries. Mark Vaile, Chairman of the Board of Whitehaven Coal, and a patron of the poetry awards insists the Company is committed to shouldering the responsibility to look after “Kurrumbede”. He employs a landscape architect to bring the gardens back to beauty. As for the future, he says, “anything’s possible”.

In the New Year’s awards of 1968, Dorothea now 83 and not in good health received the honours of the OBE. “A bit late” she wryly said when told of the award, and also she said, “I did say more or less what I wanted to say and that’s the satisfaction”.

Two weeks later on January, 14 she died in a Paddington Nursing Home. How true her words of yesteryear,” It is a sunburnt Country”, as 2019 reflects it all.

MOUNT MORGAN LOCAL GOVERNMENT DIVISION TO CHANGE Mount Morgan residents have until 30 September, 2019 to object to proposed electoral boundaries that will put the town and its surrounding localities into a new Rockhampton Regional Council electoral district.

Mount Morgan is currently in Division 5, with the change it will be moved to Division 6. (See maps). Under the Local the Local Government Act 2009 (Qld) provides for a Local Government Change Commission that is responsible for the periodical review of electoral boundaries so that each division has roughly the same number of voters.

The Rockhampton Regional Council currently has 54,140 votes and an anticipated number of 56,880 by 2024. The next Local Government elections are due to be held in March 2020.

Mount Morgan is no stranger to electoral boundary change at all three levels of government being shifted from Capricornia to Hinkler to Flynn on a Federal Level and from Fitzroy to Mirani at State Level. Even on a local level, Mount Morgan has changed divisions since the forced Local Government Amalgamations in 2008.

DEE RIVER OLDIES Members are looking forward to the next musical morning tea on Wednesday, 25 September at 10.00 am. It is $5 per head. SPOTLIGHT ON COMMUNITY GROUPS MOUNT MORGAN QCWA It is amazing just how much history there is to be found showcasing many aspects of our town. History records, many different associations, groups and committees that have played a vital role in making our town as well-known as it is. Families throughout the town have helped to introduce new and amazing things since the early gold mining days. Groups such as Rotary, Lions, Red Cross and Q.C.W.A. have been there to help within the local community when they have been needed.

On the 24 March 1950 at 3 pm the Mount Morgan Branch of the Queensland Country Women’s Association officially opened and is a part of the Capricornia Division of the Queensland Country Women’s Association.

There were many ladies and officials in attendance at the opening. The ladies needed to have a president, secretary and a treasurer to be able to hold meetings, so the ladies were nominated and they accepted.

These were Mrs A. Lennon who became President, Mrs P. Bubb who became the secretary and Mrs E.Ingram who became the secretary of the Mount Morgan branch. The branch membership grew and in its hay day there were 35 members in the branch.

The ladies were amazing. They took part in holding dances, debutant balls, market days, morning teas, helping to settle immigrants into the town, presenting awards, showcasing International studies, and establishing a child minding tent at the local show. Moving forward 69 years and the objectives and goals of the branch are no different. We are still there to help within the community. We donate to those who suffer disasters such as house fires.

student in Grade SIX at the Mount Morgan State School and we sponsor the most improved student in Home Economics at the Mount Morgan High School.

We help with sponsorship of the local show and the local rodeo association. This year we had a problem to overcome, and that was the very real situation where the branch may have to close. We were down to two members but thank you to a lot of marketing and publicity, along with the good hearts of locals and new ladies in the community we now have thirteen members, and more ladies looking at joining.

I am very pleased to announce that the branch has implemented some new concepts. We are establishing a Gardening Club and future plans include forming a Mothers Group. We have members who work, including a Day Care owner and a Hotel Proprietor. We are planning new and amazing functions for 2020 which we will advertise in the Argus and on ABC Radio and on notice boards.

We hope to have craft classes and we are implementing the Country Kitchens Programme into our functions. A workshop on this can be organised if enough ladies are interested. Hoy is held in the hall every Wednesday at 10 am for ladies who enjoy a morning out and meeting others with the same interests.

We are a very excited branch full of enthusiasm, but we need your help. We need to see more ladies come along and if you would like to join that would be even better.

Our hall has had some upgrades and these will be happening more often until we can accommodate everyone. Many of you may not know that the Mount Morgan Branch wrote three cookbooks in past years and these are still available.

Ladies don’t despair we are open to suggestions as to what you may like to see happen in the branch such as a particular fundraiser, functions or even demonstrations of crafts, floral art and even photography.

Each year Q.C.W.A. has a Country of Study and we have a product of study. Q.C.W.A. is a part of the Associated Country Women of the World. We also lobby Governments to help to improve living conditions for all including health care, better roads and education.

So if you do have ideas please let us know. I do look forward to hearing from many ladies and to watch the branch grow to the membership numbers of the past and to be a part of the Mount Morgan Community for many years to come. Ladies Inter-District Match-Play Tournament playing for the Meg Nunn Salver. This event was hosted by Women’s Golf Gold Coast District and held at the Southport Golf Club.

The seven districts take a team of six players with five to play each match, what is so amazing about this result is that the team had only five players and won the Meg Nunn Salver without any reserve players as all other districts did, as they were unable to get However that didn’t stop those involved from having the usual sixth player to nominate which meant that a very enjoyable day. Mount Morgan Golf Club annual Corporate Day event was held on Saturday, 14 September, 2019, and eight teams participated in the completion on the day which was a little disappointing for the Club.

This win was achieved without a team loss as we won against each district except the Gold Coast team where we had a squared match. Lily McKelvie won five matches and squared one, Brenda Phillips and Bernie Antcliff won four matches, squared one and both had one loss. Charlotte Briese had four wins one square and one lost match, Sarah Antcliff won two, squared two and lost two.

Our final result was seven points ahead of the field with 31½ points the Sunshine Coast Burnett Team coming second with 24½ points then Gold Coast 24 points, Downs and South Western 22½, Brisbane and District 21 points, with last year’s winners Far North Queensland on 14½ points and North Queensland 9 points. The Southport Golf course, a great course which calls for a lot of course management which our girls achieved with style. so we congratulate the team members for such a fantastic result and thank them for the sportsmen’s ship that they displayed
