MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,

You may recall that each year we have a theme for our Annual Report. We carefully ponder what might stir your hearts and minds each time you receive an Annual Report or read it online on our website, www.ursulinesisters.org. We Stand in Hope captured our thoughts and hearts this year. All of us have come out of two years of the pandemic, and although we are now living in a new normal, We Stand in Hope. We hope our lives will be better, that our wounds will begin to heal, that there will be less strife and discord in our nation, that all school-aged children will be safe, and that people will be kinder to one another. Yes, we do have hope that all of that can happen. Therefore, I ask you to take a moment to think about, to pray about, and share with one another about what We Stand in Hope really means for you.

Our Annual Report gives us an opportunity not only to recognize our donors, family members, and friends, but also to take the time to reconnect and thank each of you. You are such an important part of our Ursuline family. We also want to thank and recognize the members of our Ursuline Sisters Advisory Board, who so generously share their time and expertise guiding us through corporate discussions and decisions. In addition, where would we be without our volunteers, particularly those who helped make the 2022 Ursuline Derby Day such a success? We are so deeply grateful to all of you, our extended Ursuline family.

In this issue, we will introduce you to a few of our sisters and their unique ministerial stories. Sister Diane Therese Pinchot, who spent her entire ministry teaching art, now has her own studio, where she creates and shows beautiful art pieces at various shows. Sister Mary Jean Raymond has assumed a new leadership role at her beloved parish, St. Aloysius-St. Agatha. At the Church of the Gesu, Sister Kathleen Flannery is part of the administrative leadership team serving the people of the parish.

STANDING IN hope ROOTED IN

St. Angela Merici lived in Italy during the era known as the Renaissance. It was a time when the arts flourished and humanism developed and influenced religion, culture, and science. It was also a time when the bubonic plague raged through Europe and killed millions, the Catholic Church was riddled with corruption throughout its clergy, kings and princes sent their armies to invade territories they claimed for their own regardless of how invasions affected innocent people, and religious controversy erupted into persecution and warfare.

Does this description of her times have a familiar ring?

Yet in the midst of turmoil, Saint Angela encouraged her daughters to stand in hope. She may have heard the words of the Lord spoken through the prophet Jeremiah and taken them to heart:

I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare, not for woe! Plans to give you a future full of hope. When you call me, when you go to pray to me, I will listen to you. When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart, you will find me with you, says the Lord. –Jeremiah 29: 11-14.

She also knew from experience what the author of the Letter to the Hebrews wrote: “Let us keep firm in the hope we profess, because the One who made the promise is faithful.” (Heb. 10:23)

Indeed, the One who made the promise is faithful! Even today, signs of God’s faithfulness are around us. There are quiet signs of God’s goodness made manifest through the people who work among us to keep us safe, to bring about a society of justice and equity, to end violence and deepen respect for human life as well as for the Earth— our common home; in other words, to continue God’s mission to bring God’s reign to fullness.

Every small act of kindness, generosity, and compassion brings that Reign of God a little closer. Our friends, supporters, and donors are also co-workers with us in laboring for the mission of God in the ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland. We stand in hope. We can do so because you stand with us in every way.

Let us therefore keep firm in the hope we profess, because we KNOW that the One who made the promise is faithful. You, dear friends, are proof. The lists in this publication show it! But we know that your support and friendship extend far beyond what this Annual Report makes manifest: your prayers, your support, and your ongoing faithfulness to the Ursulines and our ministries. We are grateful. Thank you! Know that you are in our prayers every day.

God will provide for us wonderfully. We must not lose hope.

Sister Diane Therese Pinchot creates art that speaks of hope and beauty

“At every stage of my life as an artist, advocate, and teacher, I have been inspired by simple form and the beauty of the natural world. Now at this time of deep concern for the changes taking place in the environment and with the once clear beauty now being degraded with woven bits and pieces of human waste and carelessness, I feel the urgency to create artwork that will speak of hope and beauty and yet make clear the consequencesweakening this beautiful web of life - if changes are not made in the way we live.”

Born and raised in Cleveland Ohio, second oldest of six children, Sister Diane Therese Pinchot always loved “doing stuff” with her hands. “As early as preschool, my mother encouraged us to create and we even took art lessons at that very young age.” Without hesitation, Sister Diane says her biggest inspirations are her mother and her sisters, Delores and Judith Ann. Judith Ann, later known as Sister Miriam Fidelis OSU, passed away earlier this year. “We would sit at the kitchen table for hours drawing, painting – creating.”

Sister Diane entered the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland after graduating from Villa Angela Academy in 1963. She graduated from Ursuline College in 1968 with a BA in Art Education. Over the years in the community she has served as an elementary school teacher, (Saint Ann’s grade school in Cleveland Heights) high school teacher, (Lake Catholic High School in Lake County, Beaumont School in Cleveland Heights) and for 38 years she taught at Ursuline College.

Prior to graduating from Ursuline College in 1968, she won her first art show and repeated the win in 1969. She then pursued graduate studies at Case Western Reserve University/Cleveland Institute of Art, and Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., in the midst of her teaching career.

Whether her students were in the 6th grade or adults, Sister Diane says those “aha” moments when they recognized their talent were experiences of joy for her. “Those flashes when I would see the face of a student as they realized the gift in themselves were the moments that were the most gratifying for me as a teacher.”

One of the most significant experiences in Sister Diane’s life as an Ursuline Sister and artist was a 1990 visit to El Salvador where she would take on a life-changing challenge. The Diocesan Cleveland Mission Team in El Salvador asked her to design and build an altar on the spot where the bodies of four Catholic missionaries were found after being raped and murdered by members of the El Salvador National Guard in 1980.

“That experience turned my heart upside-down,” she said. The sacredness of the altar project was profound.

“I felt the art in my heart before I began.” Sister Diane says creating the altar, as with all art, is like a prayer. “And upon completion, it mirrors back your heart. Both that of the artist and those who view it.”

One of those murdered in El Salvador was Ursuline Sister Dorothy Kazel, whom Sister Diane describes as a friend and a powerful inspiration for her. It was that strong influence of Dorothy Kazel that inspired a student of Sister Dorothy to write a song of hope and courage entitled, “The Sky is My Hat”. The Salvadoran student wrote the song with this title because Sister Dorothy taught her so much self-respect that she felt she could stand tall with dignity and the sky became her hat! This story spoke to Sister Diane so much so that she was inspired to create. “The Sky is My Hat” is the title of her latest piece.

Upon retiring from the College in 2019 Sister embarked on a new ministry making art full time. Since the COVID pandemic began in 2020, shows and gallery visits had been limited, but this past year has been one of hope and reconnecting. You can find Sister Diane working diligently many days in her studio, the Article Gallery in the Waterloo Arts District of Cleveland. You can also see many of her pieces on display there. She has been invited to show her art numerous times, internationally, nationally and regionally! As humble and modest as she is, she certainly would not be the first to mention such success.

Those accolades are not the motivation behind her artwork. Sister Diane describes climate change, caring for the planet, poverty, people on the margins, and social justice as a few of the many threads woven together to make one tapestry. “If you pull one thread it all unravels, it’s all connected.” These topics are the foundation for her sculptures. Her hope is that her artwork can ignite the hearts in those who view it.

Sister Diane’s process begins with making a detailed drawing and smaller iteration. It can be a slow process. “There are time when I am working on two or three pieces at a time. I cannot force it. The material I work with has its own voice.”

The creative process has taught Sister many things over the years one of which is that you can find beauty where you least expect it. “There have been times when I was working on a piece and thought I made a mistake. But as I stepped back and looked closer I realized that what I thought was a mistake or broken, turned out to be the most beautiful part of the piece. I have to listen to the art whispering to me.”

Sister Diane sees the parallel in herself. When she was a young girl her voice often got her in trouble, (and still does today every now and then, she says with a smile). But that voice, which was thought to be a “broken” characteristic in her, has proven to be a beautiful part of who she is as she uses that voice to speak up so passionately as an advocate for social justice and a steward of creation.

Ursulines Serving in Parish Leadership

Ursuline Sisters take on roles in parishes when the need arises. Two such places are St. Aloysius-St. Agatha and Gesu parishes.

When the need for new pastoral leadership at St. Aloysius-St. Agatha Parish became evident, Sister Mary Jean Raymond answered the call. But it wasn’t one she was expecting.

Sister Mary Jean was by no means a stranger to “St. Al’s.” Her life of ministry began there in 1981 as a fourth grade teacher. The following year, she moved to teaching first grade, where she remained until 2016. She also developed a religion curriculum during that time for Catholic schools that enroll a majority of non-Catholic students. She offered workshops for teachers in urban Catholic schools.

In 2016, then-pastor Rev. Mark Hobson asked her to move into parish ministry. Sister discerned for herself that this was a Spirit-inspired move and responded positively. In 2021 when the pastor moved and an administrator of the parish was needed, Sister Mary Jean was offered the role of Parish Life Coordinator and prayerfully accepted. Parishioners were concerned that the parish would be absorbed by another and would lose its unique character. Sister Mary Jean’s acceptance of parish leadership relieved that fear. The people of the parish have been supportive and loving. “Anything I’ve asked them to do, they are here!”

Father Anthony J. Simone serves in priestly ministry at the parish in addition to his position as parochial vicar at St. Jerome Parish. Father Anthony is present at St. Al’s twice a week, on Wednesday and Friday, as well as for liturgy on most Sundays.

Every day is different as needs and challenges arise. Sister Mary Jean’s ministry is spiritual as well as downto-earth: she is responsible for the pastoral, physical, and financial care of the parish. She works with Mr. Kyle Jones, school principal; Jack Young, bookkeeper; Carol Bunn, Food Pantry Director; a pastoral council of 12

members; a Ministry and Spirituality Committee; Marianist Lay Community; the St. Vincent de Paul Society; and the Men’s Club.

Volunteers from at least eight neighboring parishes offer help as they are able. In the words of Sister Mary Jean, “St. Aloysius is a gateway for suburban parishes to have input in the city and join in ministry.”

How has this new chapter in her ministry at St. AloysiusSt. Agatha personally affected Sister Mary Jean? “I think this new position has led me to reflect on a historical perspective that I just took for granted before. What do I mean by this? I think about all of the trailblazing women in our community who did things that were new and innovative at the time. I think a lot about the history of St. Aloysius Parish and all of the souls who have passed through here or been affected by our presence here through the years.

“Sometimes (really quite often) I go over to church in the afternoons when it is quiet and walk along the stone aisles of the church and think about all of the feet that have walked them before me and will walk them after me.

“The building itself speaks of strength, longevity, and stability in our neighborhood. I pray that I might have and convey that same strength, stability, and longevity to all of the folks whose lives I touch.”

At Church of the Gesu in University Heights, Sister Kathleen Flannery serves in a similar ministry as Director of Pastoral Care and Liturgy. Since Gesu is a Jesuit parish, the circumstances differ from St. Aloysius-St. Agatha.

Sister Kathleen’s ministry was created by the Jesuit leadership to assist Jesuit pastors in the administration of their parishes. Her ministry allows them to be more available to serve the spiritual needs of their parishioners and administer sacraments. At Church of the Gesu, this ministry was initiated by Father Tom Sweetser, SJ, and continues to this day.

Sister works along with the current pastor, Father Lukas Laniauskas, SJ, assistant priests, staff members, and members of the parish who serve on various commissions centered on parish life. These include Worship, Faith Formation, Outreach, Community Life, and Administration. The commissions maintain communication among one another and with the parish as a whole in order to keep

the focus on living out the parish’s mission statement, “Gesu Parish, a Catholic community in the Jesuit tradition, is committed to: Eucharistic living, Lifelong learning, Generous serving ‘all for the greater glory of God.’” In a parish of nearly 2,300 households, this undertaking can seem overwhelming, but the dedication of the people of the parish as well as the pastoral staff and school faculty provide abundant resources.

Sisters Mary Jean’s and Kathleen’s ministries at St. AloysiusSt. Agatha and Gesu parishes are both unique expressions of a Church in service and witness to the Gospel.

Many things that we may have previously taken for granted were lost when COVID-19 disrupted life in early 2020—productivity, connections, and sometimes hope among them. These losses were felt when a pause was placed on the Ursuline Sisters’ volunteer program during the pandemic. Lost from daily life were the supporters and friends who connected with sisters as receptionists, drivers, friendly visitors, and Ursuline Derby Day volunteers. Not only did the sisters experience this loss, but some volunteers say they also felt a sense of personal loss when this happened.

We now count our blessings as volunteers were able to begin returning to service during the past fiscal year. By early 2022, most of our former volunteer receptionists were back to their duties, as well as our Friendly Visitors who support our sisters living at Regina Health Center. Others were able to attend meetings to help prepare for the 2022 Ursuline Derby Day, and in May 2022, nearly two dozen volunteers were able to be present at the in-person Ursuline Derby Day event! And while driving sisters to appointments still had to wait, several volunteer drivers jumped in to help deliver special lunches to sisters at Regina.

In July 2021, many still felt unsure of the future, but we are thankful that we could be sure of our volunteers. Throughout the long pause in service, these supporters

and friends remained eager to return to service, considering it a joy and a privilege. And by June 2022 signs of hope were evident that sisters and volunteers could again connect in most of the usual ways. We stand in hope together, looking forward to growing service opportunities and connections in the year ahead!
