MORE SUGAR? NO THANKS, I’m sweet enough!
Imagine your body is like a car, and food is the fuel that helps it run. When we eat, our body turns food into a type of sugar called glucose, which gives us energy to play, learn, and grow.
There’s a special key called insulin that helps unlock the door for glucose to enter our body’s cells and give us energy. But in some people, like those with diabetes, their body doesn’t make enough insulin or the insulin doesn’t work properly.
DIABETES
So, it’s like the door is stuck closed, and the glucose can’t get inside the cells to give us energy. That’s why people with diabetes have to take special care of their bodies by checking their blood sugar levels and taking medicine (like insulin shots or tablets) to help their bodies use the glucose properly.
With the right care, eating healthy foods, and sometimes taking medicine, people with diabetes can still do everything they love, just like everyone else!
There are two main types of diabetes - Type 1 and Type 2.
The exact cause of Type 1 This type of diabetes only sometimes affects children, who need to check their blood sugar, take meds and in some cases injec t insulin every time they eat.
Type 2 can be triggered by an unhealthy lifestyle:
• Too much sugar and carbohydrates
• Not enough exercise
• Being overweight
LOOK AFTER YOURSELF
It is important for everyone to eat HEALTHY FOODS and exercise regularly. If Type 2 is diagnosed early enough, it can be managed by making HEALTHY lifestyle changes.

THE BRIGHT BLUE JACKAL
There was once a jackal who lived with his family in a forest in India. He was very inquisitive, and it often got him into trouble.
One day he wandered near a town at the edge of the forest and saw a large tub of something outside a house. He climbed up the side to look. He stretched to see better ... and fell in!
The house belonged to a tailor and the tub was full of a bright blue colour dye, called indigo, for dyeing saris and other fabric.
Jackal splashed around in the dye. Suddenly he heard someone coming. He jumped out of the tub and ran away back into the forest.
He looked at himself in a pool of water. A bright blue jackal looked back at him. ‘What a handsome fellow I am! Surely this will bring me luck. Now I must make the best use of my lovely blue coat.’
‘Something very important happened’, said the blue jackal to his family.
‘I was chosen by the Goddess of the Forest to be the king of the forest. She changed my colour to show that I am different. From now on you must all obey me!’
But Blue Jackal wasn’t content with bossing his family around.
READ & ENJOY 18 FREE 4 ALL April 2024
He called all the animals of the forest together and told them he was a new kind of animal, and they must treat him as their king.
All the animals believed him. So they treated him like a king, never realising that he was just an ordinary jackal, dyed blue.
Blue Jackal became very spoiled. He never had to hunt for food, because Lion and Tiger brought it to him. He never had to wash, because the monkeys groomed him.
He became unbearable.
‘This has gone too far.’ said the other jackals. So they plotted against him.
One night, when the moon rose, the oldest jackal threw back his head and began to howl. All the others joined in.
Blue Jackal heard the sound. Deep inside him, he was just a jackal and he couldn’t resist the age old habit of howling at the moon.
‘Ah – ooooooooh’, howled Blue Jackal.
‘What is that racket?’, growled the lions and tigers.
‘Listen to that – the king is nothing but a common jackal!’;
‘A jackal, A jackal’, screeched the monkeys, ‘after him!’
Blue Jackal realised that his career as a king was over and ran away.
All the animals gave chase, but they couldn’t catch him.
Blue Jackal was never seen again.
I’m sure this story must be true, because I have never heard of a blue jackal living in the forests of India.
Have you?

DEAR D.E.A.R.
WE ALL KNOW THAT READERS BECOME LEADERS AND THE OAKS ACADEMY IN CAPE TOWN IS SETTING OUT TO PROVE JUST THAT!
On 15 February, The Oaks Academy launched the D.E.A.R. reading program at their school.
D.E.A.R. stands for D rop E verything A nd R ead and that is exactly what every learner and staff member does on a weekly basis.
At a certain time of the day, a jingle will play and everyone drops what they are doing to read.
Mrs Johnson, the owner and founder of the school is very enthusiastic about the program and is hopeful that it will cultivate a love for reading amongst learners. Everyone is loving the D.E.A.R program!
This program is beneficial for children and adults because life gets busy. It is very therapeutic in our busy day to stop and read.
(Miss Solomons Foundations Phase teacher)
Stars of Africa
The school is very grateful to Maskew Miller Learning who donated 52 of the great Stars of Africa readers to The Oaks Academy for the D.E.A.R. project. These helped all the children from Gr R to Gr 7 who don’t have immediate access to reading books.
WHAT IS YOUR SCHOOL DOING THAT IS AWESOME AND EXCITING?
If you are involved in any programs at your school that are fun, creative, interesting or just plain awesome – we would love to hear from you.
All you have to do is send an email with all the details to the Managing Editor at seugnette.comber@mml.co.za.
