from the Head of School
Dear MMI Community,
I hope this message finds you all in good spirits as we embark on a new year filled with promise and excitement. Winter may be upon us, but I trust you are finding warmth and joy in the midst of it all.
Since our last newsletter, there have been numerous highlights here at MMI that I am thrilled to share with you. Our basketball season kicked off with vigor, and I am delighted to report that our teams and athletes are performing admirably. The spirit of the Prepper community shines brightly at each game, buoyed by the unwavering support of our dedicated fans. As the Head of School, I always have a feeling of pride, enthusiasm, and joy in watching our students compete!
In November, we paid homage to our esteemed Founders, Sophia and Eckley Coxe, in a touching ceremony at St. James Episcopal Church. It was a moment of reflection and gratitude as our senior class officers laid a wreath at their gravesites, honoring their legacy. Following this tribute, our seniors had the opportunity to explore the Coxe Family homestead, gaining insight into the rich history and benevolent contributions of this remarkable family.
As part of our Founders Day celebration, we welcomed back our recent alumni, fostering connections and reminiscing with faculty and senior class members. Thanksgiving was marked by a delightful dinner for our entire community, courtesy of our talented Chef and her team, followed by a sweet treat sponsored by our Parents Association.
December ushered in a flurry of activities, from the performance of our Drama Club’s One Acts to the festive spirit of Holiday Theme Week. Our Winter Concert showcased the exceptional musical talents of our students, while we honored the legacy of our 1973 State Championship Basketball Team with a special anniversary celebration.
As we bid adieu to December and embraced the well-deserved winter break, we eagerly anticipate the joys and challenges that the spring season will bring. From the exhilaration of spring sports to the camaraderie of our alumni reunions and the anticipation of milestone events like Prom and Graduation, our calendar is brimming with excitement. As we prepare for these occasions, I am continually inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of our community.
I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support and commitment of our entire MMI community. Together, we are shaping a future filled with promise and possibility. I encourage you all to visit us in Freeland and witness firsthand the remarkable achievements and opportunities that define our school.
Warm regards,

MMI Receives $500 STEM Grant from Onvo through the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance
MMI Preparatory School recently received a $500 Exxon Mobil Educational Alliance grant from Onvo. The School will use the funds to purchase Raspberry Pi computers for Upper School Technology students and math manipulatives for middle school learning.
MMI Academic Dean/Computer Science and Technology instructor Justin Vincent said, “Incorporating Raspberry Pi computers in our tech classes cultivates a dynamic learning environment, fostering creativity and problem solving. Meanwhile, hands-on math manipulatives in our middle school instill a solid foundation, ensuring that our students not only embrace technology but also master the fundamentals of mathematics.”
Harman Aulakh, Onvo Vice President – Marketing, said, “Onvo is proud to continue to support the students of MMI through the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance Grant. A strong STEM education is a core building block of any curriculum, and we are happy to support MMI’s STEM programs.”
Northeast Pennsylvania. The Onvo story began 35 years ago with the first truck stop just outside of Scranton, PA in a town called Tunkhannock. Since then, the Onvo team has built a network of travel plazas, convenience stores, and restaurants dedicated to serving the travelers of Pennsylvania, New York, and beyond. As of 2022, the Onvo family of businesses now includes 40 travel plazas and gas stations, 24 quick service and full-service restaurants, petroleum distribution, and six hotels in Pennsylvania and Upstate New York.
Founded in 1988, Onvo—formerly known as Liberty—is a family business with its roots in

MMI Donors Continue to Make a Difference
The sports banners in the MMI gymnasium were updated and replaced in early January. The funds for the banners came from monies raised for athletics from numerous sources.
An anonymous donor from The Luzerne Foundation and a gift from President Emeritus Bill Shergalis ’58 and his wife, Miki, were received in support of the MMI Basketball Program. Two items were purchased using the donated funds. The first was a large digital wall clock which can be used for timing sessions for all sports that compete in the gym and for Physical Education classes. The second item purchased was a logoed rolling white board that has a basketball court on one side but can be flipped around to a blank side for other sports.
John Hersker ’76 continued his support of the Prepper Playhouse with a donation to be used for costume rentals, scene supplies, score and recorded music for this spring’s performance of Mamma Mia! Mr. Hersker also donated in support of MMI’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) program by covering all expenses for a field trip to Cinema Draft House on November 29. Flashback Cinema and the Orlando Family serve as sponsors of MMI’s FBLA program.
Sean McGraw and his family made a gift to the MMI Science Department in memory of his late father, Dr. Thomas McGraw ’52. The funds were used to purchase two reverse osmosis machines. Reverse osmosis is a process that purifies water (salt water, tap water, etc.) by removing ions (sodium, potassium, magnesium, chlorine, etc.) through a four-stage process. This method removes virtually all impurities in any water system (99.9%). The new systems are capable of producing up to 100 gallons of pure water per day. In biological and chemical sciences, pure water is essential in conducting experiments so students can be assured that impurities in water won’t lead to a failed experiment or one where there are uncontrolled variables.
Dr. Philip McHale ’58 and Linda Tishko contributed to three projects. A portion of their generous donation was used to upgrade and revamp the furniture in our Spanish Language classroom. Since the School has begun to put more of an emphasis on conversational Spanish and making sure the students are fluent, more traditional style desks do not work for conversation groupings. MMI was able to refit the classroom with wheeled, moveable, 2-3 person tables that have dry erase tops. The second purchase was The Globe by LEGO for use by MMI’s sixth-grade students in World Cultural Geography. The finial initiative funded by these generous donors was the establishment of a Curriculum Collaboration Grant for MMI Faculty. MMI’s first priority is to provide our students with a world-class education that equips them to face a variety of challenges across disciplines. Innovative teaching and collaboration fuels this by continually employing new methods of teaching, developing new teaching approaches, enriching and reinventing curricula, and creating new programs. To advance these efforts, the Curriculum Collaboration Grant will fund interdisciplinary curriculum projects for the 2024-25 academic year.

Drama Club Performs One Acts
The MMI Drama Club presented, “A Festive Evening of One-Act Comedies” on December 8 and 9. Over 35 Upper and mid school students participated in the late fall production.
Under the direction of Mrs. Joanne Oakum, the club performed two acts, “Container of Sharks”, a spoof on the popular TV show Shark Tank, and “5 Ways to Survive the Holidays”, a clever guide through a variety of awkward but familiar holiday situations. Both of the acts are by playwright Don Zolidis and performed with permission by the author.
Among an assortment of holiday scenes, the audience visited with Scrooge, the Ghostbusters and those bothersome ghosts, Cindy Lou Who and the Grinch, who discussed holiday decorations, and some very intimidating holiday carolers. Container of Sharks scenes included a pitch from Sasha and Trista whose beauty products may not be so human-friendly, a mother demonstrating how ‘on fleek’ she is, much to her daughter’s chagrin, and a real shark weighing in on product potential.

The students in Mrs. Katherine Zucco’s AP European History class shared their work from a recent project–The Monster of Absolutism. After sharing their monstrosities with one another, students engaged in a Socratic Seminar with Mrs. Zucco to reveal the real “Monsters of Absolutism” throughout history and their impact on European society.
The students in Mrs. Katherine Zucco’s AP European History class worked in small groups to create board games themed around the Scientific, Philosophical, and Political Development in the 17th and 18th centuries. Students spent time researching the Scientific Revolution and Age of Enlightenment, then created games to share what they learned with one another. Some students hit up the MMI Makerspace to use the School’s 3D printer to create their board pieces.
The sixth graders performed a “Naked” Egg Osmosis Lab in November. Students explored the concept of osmosis through observing what happens when “naked” eggs (eggs that have had the shell dissolved off ) are placed in fresh water and saltwater environments.
