L’AUTRICE Maria Cristina Martini è nata a Roma nel 1961.

Laureata in Lingue e Letterature Straniere Moderne all'Università La Sapienza di Roma, giornalista pubblicista e scrittrice, ha vinto nel 2003 il Premio Internazionale Navarro con il romanzo “Urlo muto”.

Dopo varie esperienze come giornalista radiofonica e su carta stampata, dal 1994 al 2004 è stata direttrice responsabile del primo periodico telematico in Italia: “ChiDoveQuando...”.

Dal 2001 svolge l'attività di editrice con la “MMC Edizioni” (specializzata nell'ambito della saggistica su Roma) di cui è proprietaria e in cui è parte attiva anche nel ruolo di autrice.

Contemporaneamente è impegnata in un'attività commerciale e ha inoltre gestito per un paio d'anni un piccolo spazio culturale/galleria d'arte al centro di Roma, “38 MMC Gallery”.

Ama viaggiare e conoscere l'arte nel mondo. Fra i suoi hobby, la pittura su porcellana che le dona momenti di relax all'interno di una vita molto impegnata.

THE AUTHOR Maria Cristina Martini was born in Rome in 1961.

Graduated in Modern Foreign Languages and Literature at “La Sapienza” University in Rome, journalist and writer, she has won the 2003 International Navarro Prize with the novel “Urlo muto”.

After working as radio and press journalist, from 1994 to 2004 she was Director of the first electronic magazine in Italy: “ChiDoveQuando ...”.

Since 2001, she works as publisher in her own “MMC Edizioni” (specialized in non-fiction on Rome), in which is active part as author too.

At the same time she is engaged in a commercial activity and also managed, for a couple of years, a small cultural space/art gallery in Rome city center, “38 MMC Gallery”.

She loves to travel and learn about art in the world. Among her hobbies, porcelain painting that gives her relaxing moments in a very busy life.

CENNI STORICI L'usanza di costruire edicole ha origini lontane. Risale infatti alla tradizione degli antichi romani di costruire piccoli altari pubblici dedicati alle divinità pagane che proteggevano luoghi critici quali gli incroci, i cosiddetti “lares compitales”.

Col passare degli anni e il succedersi delle fedi religiose, le edicole cominciarono a rappresentare soggetti cristiani, soprattutto Madonne.

Oltre ad una evidente funzione spirituale, le edicole a muro assolvevano anche all'importante funzione pratica di illuminare gli incroci della città, prevalentemente oscuri al calar del sole, e quindi a preservare i passanti dall'attacco di eventuali malviventi.

Con l'arrivo dell'energia elettrica, e soprattutto della illuminazione stradale diffusa su tutto il territorio, la funzione “pratica” delle edicole si è praticamente dissolta e le “Madonnelle” (espressione romana con cui sono chiamate questo tipo di edicole) sono rimaste numerose a testimoniare unicamente la spiritualità e i comportamenti devozionali del popolo romano.

L'elettricità fu addirittura vista come un vero e proprio affronto dalle persone maggiormente devote.

Durante l'occupazione francese alla fine del XVIII secolo, le edicole divennero oggetto di numerosi atti vandalici, soprattutto sassate. Molte immagini vennero addirittura rimosse dai romani più fedeli per timore che fossero distrutte. Per i francesi, colpire le “Madonnelle” significava manifestare la propria avversione verso il governo del Papa e di quel clero che, nel nome di Maria, incitava il popolo a insorgere contro la Repubblica. Quando il governo repubblicano crollò e il Pontefice fece ritorno a Roma, le immagini della Madonna ripresero il loro posto e si scatenò una nuova passione nei loro confronti. Quelle danneggiate furono abbellite o restaurate e ne sorsero di nuove in tutti i rioni come ennesima esternazione di fede.

Il rinnovato fervore nei confronti delle edicole sacre durò fino alla fine dell'Ottocento ma successivamente, a seguito della liberazione di Roma e della sua proclamazione a capitale d'Italia si manifestò una nuova ondata di persecuzione contro tutte le usanze religiose della città. I tempi erano ormai irrimediabilmente cambiati e il fervore religioso nei confronti delle edicole iniziò a scemare. Un po' a causa delle demolizioni per lo sviluppo urbanistico e un po' a causa dell'incuria generale, il numero delle edicole romane prese irrimediabilmente a diminuire.

Nel centro storico di Roma, secondo un censimento realizzato durante il XIX secolo, ve ne erano alcune migliaia, ma più di recente la conta parla di parecchie centinaia, senza prendere in considerazione la loro numerosa proliferazione in aree periferiche della città.

Un ultimo impeto di fede è stato registrato alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale quando, avute salve le vite nonostante i bombardamenti, i romani hanno creato una serie di nuove edicole contemporanee, principalmente dedicate alla Madonna del Divino Amore, per ringraziamento.

BACKGROUND The custom of building shrines has ancient origins. It dates back to the ancient romans tradition of building small altars, called “lares compitales”, dedicated to public pagan gods that protected critical locations such as crossroads.

As the years passed and with the succession of religious faiths, shrines began to represent Christian subjects, especially Madonnas.

Besides an obvious spiritual function, wall shrines absolved also the important practical function to illuminate the city crossroads, mainly dark at sunset, and then to preserve the passers from the attack of possible criminals.

With the coming of electricity, and especially of the street lighting spread throughout the territory, the “practical" function of shrines dissolved and “Madonnelle” (the roman word which this type of shrines are called with) remained numerous only to testify spirituality and devotional behaviour of the roman people.

The electricity was even seen as a snub by people most devoted.

During the french occupation in the late eighteenth century, the shrines became the object of many vandalism acts, especially stones-throwing. Many images were even removed by the more faithful romans for fear that they were destroyed. For the french, to hit “Madonnelle” meant to express their opposition to the Pope government and to the clergy who, in Mary's name, incited people to rise against the Republic. When the republican government collapsed and the Pope returned to Rome, Madonna images resumed their places and a new passion unleashed for them. Those ones injured were embellished or restored, and new ones arose in all districts as another outburst of faith.

The renewed fervour towards shrines lasted until the late nineteenth century but successively, after the liberation of Rome and its proclamation as Italy capital, appeared a new wave of persecution against all the religious customs of the city.

The times were irrevocably changed and the religious fervour towards shrines began to decline. Partly because of demolitions for urban development and partly because of general negligence, the number of roman shrines hopelessly began to decrease.

In the Rome city centre, according to a census conducted during the nineteenth century, were several thousand of shrines, but more recently they are only several hundred, without considering their large proliferation in peripheral areas of the city.

A final surge of faith was registered at the end of World War II when romans, having saved their life despite the bombings, created new contemporary shrines, mainly dedicated to Our Lady of Divine Love, for thanksgiving.

MADONNA ADDOLORATA

In questa via a due passi dal Colosseo, immersa in un suggestivo angolo lontano dal caos, incontriamo sulla destra una prima edicola stradale composta da una nicchia a forma di arco all'interno di un grande tabernacolo marmoreo, inserito sul muro di cinta degli Orti Farnesiani.

Parlo di “prima edicola” perché sulla strada che prosegue verso sinistra sono presenti altre quattordici edicole che rappresentano la Via Crucis, mentre la prima che stiamo analizzando, un poco distaccata dalle altre come posizione, contiene l'immagine di una Madonna Addolorata. Accanto a Maria dei bambini reggono i simboli della Passione.

La Chiesa di S. Bonaventura fu costruita nel 1675 e il complesso nella sua interezza fu restaurato intorno al 1840. Ma la creazione delle edicole è precedente ed è dovuta a S. Leonardo da Porto Maurizio che ideò la pratica della Via Crucis, una forma di devozione che si prodigò a diffondere ovunque.

Inizialmente, nel 1731, all'interno di tutte le nicchie furono realizzati degli affreschi che però si deteriorarono rapidamente e vennero sostituiti nel 1771 da bassorilievi in terracotta commissionati allo scultore Giuseppe Franchi. I bassorilievi furono poi dipinti da un frate interno, padre Corrado da Rimini. La colorazione è ora quasi del tutto scomparsa.

In this street, a stone's throw from the Colosseum, nestled in a picturesque corner away from the hustle, we meet on the right a first road shrine consisting of an arch-shaped niche in a large marble tabernacle, placed on the wall of the Farnese Gardens.

I say “first one” because on the road continuing on the left, are other fourteen shrines representing the Via Crucis, while the first one that we are analysing, a little detached from the others as location, contains the image of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Beside Mary, children hold the symbols of the Passion.

The Church of St. Bonaventura was built in 1675 and the whole complex was restored around 1840. But the creation of shrines is older and is due to St. Leonard of Porto Maurizio, who conceived the practice of the Via Crucis, a form of devotion that strove to spread everywhere.

Initially, in 1731, in all the niches were made frescoes but they deteriorated quickly and were replaced in 1771 by terracotta bas-reliefs commissioned to the sculptor Giuseppe Franchi. The bas-reliefs were then painted by a monk inside, father Corrado from Rimini. The colouring is now almost completely disappeared.

I lavori di sventramento della area per la costruzione del Vittoriano e per la creazione della Via del Mare (oggi Via del Teatro di Marcello) coinvolsero case, viuzze e chiese.

Questi lavori permisero però di fare affiorare un reperto archeologico unico, una insula, ossia una originale casa abitativa romana a più piani. Inoltre riportarono alla luce e in buona parte demolirono anche quel poco che era rimasto della pre-esistente Chiesa di S. Biagio de Mercatello di cui si salvarono solo il campanile romanico e una piccola abside con l'affresco della “Deposizione di Cristo tra il compianto della Madonna e di S. Giovanni” del XIV secolo, che è l'immagine sacra oggetto delle nostre attuali attenzioni.

Nell'intradosso dell'arco della nicchia sono dipinti, all'interno di medaglioni affrescati, i quattro simboli degli Evangelisti: il leone (Marco), l'aquila (Giovanni), poi l'agnello divino al centro, e quindi l'uomo alato (Matteo) e il bue (Luca).

Ai tempi del ritrovamento vennero inseriti una mensola marmorea sotto l'affresco, e un tettino spiovente per protezione, sul muro esterno sopra l'affresco; entrambi sono tuttora al loro posto. Così la nicchia ha assunto l'aspetto di un tabernacolo e si è trasformata a tutti gli effetti in una edicola.

Quando la storia è millenaria non finisce mai di riservare trasformazioni e sorprese.

The demolition works of the area for the construction of the Vittoriano and the creation of the Via del Mare (now Via del Teatro di Marcello) involved houses, streets and churches.

These works, however, allowed to bring out a unique archaeological find, an insula, ie an original roman residential house with several floors. Also they unearthed and largely demolished what remained of pre-existing Church of “St. Biagio de Mercatello”, saving only the Romanesque bell tower and a small apse with the fresco of the “Deposition of Christ between the late of the Virgin Mary and St. John” of the fourteenth century, which is the sacred image object of our current attention.

In the intrados of the niche arch are painted, inside frescoed medallions, the four Evangelists symbols: the lion (Mark), the eagle (John), the divine lamb in the middle, and then the winged man (Matthew) and the ox (Luke).

At the time of the discovery were included a marble shelf under the fresco, and a pitched roof, for protection, on the outside wall above the fresco; both are still in their place. So the niche has taken on the appearance of a tabernacle and has turned to all effects in a shrine.

When history is millenary never ends to reserve changes and surprises.

Un patrimonio che va conosciuto e osservato con la giusta attenzione perché in certi casi siamo davanti a piccoli capolavori in quell'incredibile museo a cielo aperto che è Roma. Ed è giusto, anche per un turista, avere modo di scoprirli e portarsene a casa un ricordo.

A tale scopo, in questo libro sono state selezionate le 50 edicole più belle o più importanti della città eterna all'interno di tre percorsi che si snodano lungo le strade e le piazze più tipicamente turistiche di Roma.

Considered, depending on personal thought, simple architectural decorations, devotional and protective symbols, expressions of a secondary art or elements of street furniture, the sacred shrines are part of an important “historical-artistic-religious heritage” that must be preserved from oblivion and from destruction.

An heritage which must be known and observed with the proper attention because in some cases we are dealing with small masterpieces in that incredible open-air museum that is Rome. And it's right, even for a tourist, have way to discover them and bring home a memory.

For this purpose, in this book we have selected the 50 most beautiful or most important shrines of the eternal city through three tours that go along the most typically touristic streets and squares in Rome.
