A month for caring, generosity… and friendship In an era when the world seems to be celebrating an “International Day” of one kind or another every 24 hours, it is understandable that we sometimes overlook their importance. It is true that some of these commemorations have become devalued over time; while others probably had no right to be in such exalted company in the first place. Many, however, warrant our undivided attention and patronage, and near the top of this list is Breast Cancer Awareness. In fact, it is such a vital issue – not only for women but also for male partners, family members and friends – that the whole month of October, not just a single day, has been set aside for special support events, fund-raising initiatives and public, and private, reflection on an illness that turns so many people’s lives upside down. In a poignant Island Connections feature this issue we hear the stories of three women who have experienced the trauma of breast cancer with varying consequences. Jo Ryan decided to take the fight to the “Big C”, to take control of the situation, and has already won the emotional battle – while helping to raise considerable funds for cancer research. Linda Ledwidge’s own cancer scare turned out to be less serious but it did remind her of the absolute importance of screening and, where possible, of sharing the news with loved ones. Our third testimonial comes from a Palma woman who prefers not to reveal her identity. As both her mother and sister had breast cancer, she did take the precaution of undergoing regular mammograms, and one day doctors found a huge tumour that required eight months of chemotherapy. She is now on a five-year programme of medication but is focusing on the positive: she will soon have a cleavage again!

On a more prosaic note… as we have ruefully noted before, there are statistics – and then there are statistics! Putting aside our scepticism for the moment it is reassuring to note that in August Spain had a record number of foreign visitors, according to a national government Frontur survey: 9.4 per cent more than for the same month in 2010. The total for the year was also up nearly eight per cent on 2010.

As has been the trend in recent months, the Balearics were among the regions leading the way – one more clear sign that the islands remain a resilient and hugely popular holiday and residential tourism destination.

NEW RELEASES, WHAT’S BEING FILMED AT THE MOMENT, WHAT’S IN PRE-PRODUCTION AND WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE… MICKY REYNOLDS LOOKS AT WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF MOVIES

film OF THE MONTH

The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn

The Help

Release dates: 26 October (Spain and UK); 23 December (US) The ‘60s classic TV cartoon jumps to the silver screen with STEPHEN SPIELBERG giving the two GEORGES “HERGE” REMI comic books, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham’s Treasure, the 3D treatment. Tintin, his four-legged canine companion Snowy and the rest of his friends find directions to a sunken ship commanded by Capt. Haddock’s ancestor and go off on a treasure hunt. JAMIE BELL, DANIEL CRAIG, ANDY SERKIS, NICK FROST, MACKENZIE CROOK.

BEST OF THE REST I Don’t Know How She Does It

Release dates: 12 August (US); 28 October (Spain and UK) This movie is based on the one of the most talked about books in years by KATHRYN STOCKETT which was number one on the New York Times 2009 list of best-selling novels. It tells the story of three extraordinary women in deep south Mississippi back in 1962 when the civil rights movement was at its peak, and on its US release in August the film topped the box office charts, grossing over $147 million at the time of going to press. Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter, played by EMMA STONE (Superbad), returns to small town Jackson after graduating from college with aspirations of becoming an author. But she comes from a well-to-do family and her mother (West Wing star ALISON

18

JANNEY) just wants her to settle down so she will end up like all of her old friends who include Hilly Holbrook (BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD – daughter of top director RON) and Celia Foote (JESSICA CHASTAIN) – married with children. She rebels and finds solace in Aibileen, portrayed by 2009 Oscar nominee (Doubt) VIOLA DAVIS, the former housemaid who Skeeter grew up with. After seeing things which as a child she took for granted she decides to write a book from the point of view of the local black maids (known as the Help), exposing the racism they faced while working for white families. At first the maids are reluctant to come forward until Hilly proposes her “Home Help Sanitation Initiative” – a bill to provide separate bathrooms for black help to the local government. Then the ball starts

rolling as her annoyed ex-maid Minny (OCTAVIA SPENCER), who Hilly fired, agrees to speak with Skeeter to reveal all. A draft of the two stories is sent to a New York publisher who shows immediate interest and tells Skeeter to dig deeper. At the same time tensions rise after a local assassination, and many black maids come forward to talk. On finding out about the unrest, the white community, led by Hilly, have plans of their own – stop this controversial book from being published so life can go on as it has done for generations. As mentioned earlier, the film followed the book to the top of its listings, making a lot more than its $25 million budget, and will no doubt it will do the same on its release in Europe at the end of this month.

One Day

Release dates: 19 August (US); 24 August (UK); 14 October (Spain) Emma (ANNE HATHAWAY) and Dexter (JIM STRURGESS) meet on the night of their university graduation – 15 July. Every year they meet up again on that date. Over the years they grow apart as their lives take different directions and they meet other people. But all of a sudden their lives start taking opposite directions again – do they belong with each other? Based on the bestseller penned by DAVID NICHOLLS.

Contagion

Release dates: 16 September (US and UK); 21 October (Spain) A comedy about a successful finance executive who returns home at night to look after her out-of-work architect husband and two kids. A lucrative new account will see her travelling across the country on a regular basis and her husband receives a job offer he can’t turn down. Life looks peachy but will it put a strain on their marriage? SARAH JESSICA PARKER, GREG KINNEAR, SETH MEYERS, KELSEY GRAMMER, PIERCE BROSMAN, CHRISTINA HENDRICKS, OLIVIA MUNN.

Release dates: 9 September (US); 14 October (Spain); 21 October (UK) Action-thriller that topped the box office Stateside last month. A deadly disease poses a threat to the world and an international team of doctors are contracted to deal with the outbreak and panic as the fast-moving epidemic grows. MATT DAMON, KATE WINSLET, JUDE LAW, GWYNETH PALTROW, LAURENCE FISHBURNE.

CULTURE & ENTERTAINMENT Life & Living Mallorca is currently one of three destinations for the much talked about Cloud Atlas shoot, and HUGH GRANT has joined the impressive cast that includes HUGO WEAVING, TOM HANKS, BEN WHISHAW, SUSAN SARANDON and JIM BROADBENT with eye candy supplied by NATALIE PORTMAN and HALLE BERRY (who broke her foot while filming here). We told you about this last month but if you missed out… it is adapted from the 2004 DAVID MITCHELL best-selling novel following six separate, but somehow interconnected, story lines spanning from the 19th century to a post-apocalyptic 21st century. Each actor will portray multiple roles in the project.

TAKE ONE

A cast to kill for has been recruited for The Expendables 2, and former Neighbours regular LIAM HEMSWORTH joins this all-star assembly, currently shooting in Bulgaria, as a sniper. SYLVESTER STALLONE, CHUCK NORRIS and ARNIE are reprising their roles from last year’s original. JASON STATHAM, DOLPH LUNDGREN, JET LI, MICKEY ROURKE, TERRY CREWS and RANDY COUTURE are also expected to return, and JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME, BRUCE WILLIS, JOHN TRAVOLTA and NICOLAS CAGE are on board for this all-action sequel. The latter is also involved in the thriller The Frozen Ground, which is based on real-life serial killer and respected family man Robert Hansen (JOHN CUSACK), who murdered 24 women in 12 years in his Alaskan community. CAGE portrays a state trooper who finds the one victim (High School Musical hottie VANESSA HUDGENS) who managed to escape the monster, though no one believes her story. Filming starts this month in where else but Alaska. Talking of hot chicks, how about this for a kick-ass crew – MILLA JOVOVICH, KATE BECKINSALE and SOFIA VERGARA will parade for an adaption of the comic book Danger Girl. It’s been described as a mixture of Mission: Impossible, Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Charlie’s Angels. The only problem is getting this hot tottie trio together as they are all working on their main projects – TV comedy series Modern Family for VERGARA, BECKINSALE is returning as Selene in Underworld: Awakening and JOVOVICH reprises Alice in Resident Evil: Retribution. Mystery is surrounding the cast of the latter flick after JOVOVICH announced that three main players from the last film, Chris Redfield (WENTWORTH MILLER), Claire Redfield (ALI LARTER), and K-Mart (SPENCER LOCKE), may not be returning – but their characters will still be in the script, having been kidnapped by the Umbrella Corporation. SIENNA GUILLORY is back as Jill Valentine, who will have a showdown with Alice (JOVOVICH); BORIS KODJOE returns as Luther West and SHAWN ROBERTS as villain Albert Wesker. COLIN SALMON, who featured in the 2002 original, and somehow Rain Ocampo (MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ), who was killed off in that same film, have also joined the cast currently filming in Toronto. Baywatch is to be made into a movie but it will not be based on the legendary TV series which ran from 1989 until 2001; two of the show’s cult lifesavers, PAMELA ANDERSON and DAVID HASSELHOFF, will return but they will not portray their original characters from the show. After its box office success during the summer an Inbetweeners sequel may be on the cards. The gang, who in real life are all now in their mid 20s, will meet up four years on for the stag party and wedding of Neil (BLAKE HARRISON). SIMON BIRD (Will), JOE THOMAS (Simon) and JAMES BUCKLEY (Jay) are all said to be interested. Cameras have just started rolling for the epic romance Anna Karenina. This powerful story, adapted from the LEO TOLSTOY classic novel, unfolds in its original late-19thcentury Russian high-society setting and powerfully explores the capacity for love that runs from the passion between adulterers to the bond between a mother (KEIRA KNIGHTLEY) and her children. Joining her on set is JUDE LAW, EMILY WATSON, AARON JOHNSON (Nowhere Boy), KELLY MACDONALD (Boardwalk Empire) and MATTHEW MACFADYEN (The Pillars of the Earth).

20

Before filming starts on the fifth series of the award-winning TV vampire saga True Blood some of its stars are working on different projects. STEPHEN MOYER (who plays vampire king Bill) is set to start on The Barrens as a man who takes his family on a camping trip to the dense forest known as the New Jersey Pine Barrens, where he becomes convinced they’re being stalked by the legendary winged monster, the Jersey Devil. ANNA PAQUIN (Sookie) is currently on set of the comedy drama Straight A’s as the sisterin-law of a recovering drug addict (The Lincoln Lawyer’s RYAN PHILLIPPE), who is haunted by the ghost of his dead mother and pressured to return to the family he abandoned. And ALEXANDER SKARSGARD (Eric) joins JASON BATEMAN (Arrested Development) this month for Disconnect, portraying characters affected in serious ways by the Internet.

Well, now that Mallorca Rocks has closed its doors until next summer there’s not a lot going on around here but if you are into flamenco the celebrated Spanish artist NINA PASTORI plays the Auditorium de Palma on Saturday 15 October. For info on local booking agents go to ticketmaster.es. MICHAEL JACKSON will be in the news all of the time now “The Trial” has finally started and there is also a DAVID GEST documentary about the singer on UK TV on 24 October. One of the stories concerns WHITNEY HOUSTON, who was having dinner with the JACKO when she accidentally dropped her knife. While the late singer was retrieving the said item she felt her toes being sucked. “Michael is that you? Don’t stop, that’s so sensual.” JACKO popped up saying, “It’s not me, it’s Bubbles.” (For those who don’t know – that was his pet chimp.)

RIHANNA, who has given most of the male population a wonderful summer as photos of her while sunning it up all over the world have been in the papers almost every day, was told to cover up by the farmer whose field she was using in Ireland to film the video for her current single We Found Love. He objected to her “state of undress”. After telling her off, the farmer, who had never heard of her, said he had to go and attend to his sheep.

were yet again involved in an “air rage” incident last month on a flight landing at Palma airport. TULISA allegedly told a British airways steward to “shut the f… up” after he asked her boyfriend and fellow band member, FaZer, to switch off his phone for a second time for landing. The XXXX Factor judge (dread) denies being abusive on the flight. Meanwhile, the other one, DAPPY, whose debut single No Regrets topped the uk charts last month, says he is “the oZZy osBourne of our country (uk)” shouldn’t someone tell the dippy hat-wearing dope that the lord of darkness is english?

GA GA continues to amuse… one of her latest antics was while on a New York photo shoot which saw her wearing a dead pigeon on her head and eating a hot dog at (as my Canadian friends call it) a street meat stand. She fell off her skyscraper shoes and changed them, downgrading to 12-inch block heels, but still had to be carried to her transport by a bodyguard as she couldn’t walk in them. In a recent interview she said, “I’ve been working on a new album. I’ve been planning the next tour, which keeps me very excited and busy because I have lots of new ideas, and I know exactly how I want it to look.” How she wants to look – is the world ready for that? Run for the hills – STEPS are making a comeback. The reformed quintet who “graced” the charts between 1997 and 2001 have made a four-part series for the Sky Living channel which started on 28 September. Their Ultimate Collection CD is released on 10 October and a tour has been lined up for November. Do we really want this? Guys how about taking one step forward and two steps back. So after all the hype ONE DIRECTION succeeded getting the UK number one spot with their debut single What Makes You Beautiful and now more former acts from that programme that should not be mentioned are also releasing stuff this month, including last year’s winner MATT CARDLE with a single When We Collide (a re-titled cover of the BIFFY CLYRO tune Many Of Horror) on 9 October and an album, Letters, a week later.

Culture & entertainment liFe & living If all the bands who want to play at the Olympics get their way there will be no time for the Games themselves. The latest to throw their hat into the Olympic ring are THE WHO, who have been signed up for the closing ceremony, and QUEEN, who will re-recruit former FREE and BAD COMPANY singer PAUL ROGERS to join BRIAN MAY and ROGER TAYLOR – but will former member JOHN DEACON come out of retirement and join them for the big occasion?

Also out this month… Mylo Xyloto by COLDPLAY on the 24th which includes the current single, Paradise. Band leader CHRIS MARTIN said this could be their final offering as he is considering moving on to new projects on his own. After their mother banged the heads of the GALLAGHER siblings together for them to make up it didn’t take long before the truce was broken when LIAM had a pop at this brother during the Reading Festival, going on about him and his “f… in acoustic guitar”. The long-awaited solo project, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, is out on 17 October and Noel says “none of the songs would have made it onto an OASIS record”. I bet Liam would have something to say about that as well.

How about this for collaboration – LOU REED and METALLICA are releasing an album, Lulu, on 31 October. The REED-written songs, which reduced the band’s heavy rockers KIRK HAMMETT and JAMES HETFIELD to tears, were inspired by the plays of German expressionist FRANK WEDEKIND. If this is anything like the 1999 partnership with the SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA on S&M it will be worth checking out

Las Brisas Puerto de Andraitx

Someone Like You by ADELE is officially banned at a Dublin music keyboard store as staff are sick of people trying to play the piano ballad on the shop’s keyboards. A sign has now been put up in the shop window stating: “Strictly NO Adele”. It reminds this scribe of happy days when friends and myself used to go into the local music shop and set a loop on the Roland space guitar/synthesizer to the tune of Love Missile F1-11 by SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNICK. What do ADELE and BEYONCE now have in common? They are both eating for two.

With the celebrations surrounding the 20th anniversary of the Nevermind album by NIRVANA last month came the not so well known story about the differences between KURT COBAIN and DAVE GROHL. It all started when GROHL submitted some tunes to the singer while he was writing songs for the 1993 album In Utero. COBAIN said, “I write the songs, you concentrate on your drumming”, which apparently he was not happy with. It was the beginning of the end and if COBAIN had not taken his own life it would only have been a matter of time before GROHL moved on. As we all know GROHL went on to form FOO FIGHTERS and they recently hit the headlines at their Kansas City Sprint Centre gig. The outside of the building was being picketed by the local Baptist Church group due to the band’s “teaching of fornication, adultery, idolatry and fags”. So the boys took to the back of a pick-up truck to sing a specially penned version of Keep It Clean as an ode to same-sex loving, wearing redneck beards, wigs and trucker hats. The fundamentalist group’s jeers were drowned out by fans waiting to enter the building.

24

compiled by Micky reynolds

Back to COBAIN… one of the closest to him before his death was MICHAEL STIPE, who last month announced it was The End of the World As We Know It for REM fans. On the night the band split I was having an Indian with a friend who worshipped them. When hearing the bad news, he fainted, and his head dropped into his meal. To which someone said, “That’s him in his korma, losing his religion.” REM will release a greatest hits collection, Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage: 1982-2011, on 14 November featuring three new tracks from their final recording sessions.

Reading Room With Halloween just around the creepy corner, this month’s cobweb-covered Reading Room brings you a collection of dusty novels about spooks, witches, the paranormal and skeletons that are not necessarily in the closet.

ANNA DRESSED IN BLOOD By Kendare Blake

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: he kills the dead. So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father’s mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead – keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay. When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn’t expect anything outside of the ordinary: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he’s never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home. But she, for whatever reason, spares Cas’s life.

THE NEAR WITCH By Victoria Schwab

The Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children. If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company. And there are no strangers in the town of Near. These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life. But when an actual stranger – a boy who seems to fade like smoke – appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true. The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion. Still, he insists on helping Lexi search for them. Something tells her she can trust him. As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi’s need to know – about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy. Part fairy tale, part love story, Victoria Schwab’s debut novel is entirely original yet achingly familiar: a song you heard long ago, a whisper carried by the wind, and a dream you won’t soon forget.

SPELLBOUND

By Kelley Armstrong

Savannah Levine is in terrible danger, and for once she’s powerless to help herself. At the conclusion of the previous book in the series, Waking the Witch, Savannah swore that she would give up her powers if it would help a young girl. Little did she know that someone would take her up on that promise! And now witch-hunting assassins, necromancers, half-demons, and rogue witches all seem to be after her. The threat is not just for Savannah; every member of the Otherworld might be at risk. While most her fellow supernaturals are circling the wagons at a gathering of the council in Miami, Savannah is caught on the road, isolated from those who can protect her and unable to use her vast spell-casting talent, the thing she counts on most. In a story that will change the shape of the Otherworld forever, Spellbound gathers Elena, Clay, Paige, Lucas, Jamie, Hope and others, who soon learn that the greatest threat to supernaturals just may come from within.

SPEED dATING WITH THE DEAD By Scott Nicholson

When Wayne “Digger” Wilson hosts a paranormal conference at the haunted White Horse Inn, he has motives beyond searching for the inn’s legendary ghosts. Years previously, he had made a honeymoon promise to his wife Beth that if one of them died the survivor would return to the White Horse to summon the

other’s lost spirit. Now she’s dead and Digger’s back, with the daughter they conceived during that fateful honeymoon 16 years before. And the ghost hunters are stirring up ancient evils that were better left in peace, because the inn’s basement is home to a circle of demons that have been waiting for Wayne to return. They want his teenage daughter Kendra, and they’ll play whatever tricks they need in order to satisfy their dark desires. And at the White Horse Inn not even angels can be trusted…

ALWAYS A WITCH

By Carolyn MacCullough

The latest in a series of books about the adventures of Tam and Gabriel continues with more time travel, Talents, spy work, and of course, the evil Knights. Since the gripping conclusion of the previous book, Once A Witch, Tamsin Greene has

been haunted by her grandmother’s prophecy that she will soon be forced to make a crucial decision – one so terrible that it could harm her family forever. When she discovers that her enemy, Alistair Knight, went back in time to Victorian-era New York in order to destroy her family, Tamsin is forced to follow him into the past. Stranded all alone in the 19th century, Tamsin soon finds herself disguised as a lady’s maid in the terrifying mansion of the evil Knight family, avoiding the watchful eye of the vicious matron, La Spider, and fending off the advances of Liam Knight. As time runs out, both families square off in a thrilling display of magic. And, to her horror, Tamsin finally understands the nature of her fateful choice

BETWEEN

By Jessica Warman

Elizabeth Valchar – pretty, popular and rich – wakes up the morning after her 18th birthday on the yacht where she had been celebrating with her closest friends. A persistent thumping noise has roused her. When she goes to investigate, she finds her own drowned body is hitting the side of the boat. Liz is dead. She has no memory of what happened to her, and can only observe in horror the fallout of her death. She’s also soon joined by Alex Berg, a quiet boy from her high school who was killed by a hit-and-run driver. The two keep each other company, floating in and out of memories and trying to piece together the details of what happened to each of them. In her regular life, Liz was a runner. It wasn’t abnormal for her to run 12 to 15 kilometres a day. But as memories from closer to her death begin to surface Liz finds that she had been running much more than normal, and that she had all but stopped eating. Liz’s mother, who died when Liz was nine, had battled with anorexia as well, and those around her worried that Liz was following in her mother’s footsteps. But something more sinister was consuming Liz from the inside out.

Adele

By Margarita McDonald

Someone Like… the Girl Next Door Even in today’s world of reality TV overnight stardom it is rare for a relatively new performer on the international stage to enjoy both critical and popular acclaim. In just four years, and after only two albums, Adele has made it into the Guinness Book of Records and been universally lauded by the cognoscenti as an exceptional talent.

Early in her career the British press dubbed Adele a “new Amy Winehouse”. Fortunately – on more than one level – she has overcome that inopportune comparison to forge her own musical identity, while avoiding the usual pitfalls of fame at a young age. Adele herself has referred to comparisons with other female soul singers as lazy. “We’re a gender, not a genre,” she says. AllMusic helped remove that millstone from around her neck, declaring, “Adele is simply too magical to compare with anyone.” Even Beyonce entered the fray, citing the 23-year-old British singer as one of the influences for her fourth album. Featuring Adele on their latest cover, Vogue noted that she had “won over the world with her heartbreaking voice and her ability to seem as if she is very much herself… Adele’s very normality, her down-to-earth determination not to compromise herself, has become as much a part of her USP as, for example, Madonna’s constant, deliberate reinvention.” In 2008 Adele was the first recipient of the Brit Awards “Critics’ Choice” and that same year, in a BBC poll of music critics, she was named number one predicted breakthrough act of 2008.

36

Her debut album 19 not only enabled her to break through into the big time but also debuted at number one. At the 2009 Grammy Awards she was honoured as Best New Artist and received a second award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Her second album 21 also debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, stayed there for 16 weeks, and went straight to the top spot on the Billboard 200 in the US. The first two singles, Rolling in the Deep and Someone Like You (which she performed at the 2011 Brit Awards), both reached number one in the UK

THE BEGINNINGS

Born on 5 May 1988 in Tottenham, to a single teenage mother (a furniture maker and adult learning activities organiser), Adele Laurie Blue Adkins began singing at four. She says she became obsessed with voices. She impersonated the Spice Girls at dinner parties and recalls them being a major influence in her passion for music. “They made me what I am today.” At 11, Adele and her mother moved to West Norwood, the subject of her first song, Hometown Glory, written when she was 16. Her musical influences moved on from Spice to R&B, including such artists

as Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child and Mary J. Blige, and she watched Pink perform at Brixton Academy in what she describes as one of the defining moments of her life. Adele was a classmate of Leona Lewis and Jessie J at the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology in Croydon, and graduated in 2006. She credits the school with nurturing her talent. A three-song demo she recorded for a class project became popular on Myspace and attracted the attention of XL Recordings. She signed to the music label in 2006 and provided vocals for Jack Peñate’s song My Yvonne on his debut album. Her own song Hometown Glory was released in 2007 – and has subsequently been featured on top TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill, Hollyoaks and Secret Diary of a Call Girl. She supported Will Young at the 2007 Mencap Little Noises Sessions and headlined the charity concert the following year, supported by Damien Rice. Her debut album 19 was released in January 2008, one week after the first single Chasing Pavements, and also included the Bob Dylan song Make You Feel My Love from his 1997 album Time Out of Mind. The title of the album reflected her age while she was writing it. “I just kinda remember becoming a bit of a woman

38

during that time, and I think that is definitely documented in the songs.” Her second album 21 was released in January this year, also named after her age at the time of its production. It was composed following her separation from an unnamed boyfriend, and explores such themes as anger, revenge, heartbreak, self-examination and forgiveness. Recently, she explained, “With what’s going on with the album around the world it’s important to be able to share it with him. Because it’s marvellous what has happened. He changed my life, I can’t deny that. The album helped me get over splitting up with my boyfriend. It helped me forgive and I hope he has forgiven himself.” The album gained an entry in the Guinness Book of Records for the most consecutive weeks at number one (11) and the most total weeks at number one (18) on the UK Albums Chart for an album by a female artist. The Official Charts Company also announced that Adele was the first living artist to achieve the feat of two top five hits in both the UK Official Singles Chart and the Official Albums Chart simultaneously since The Beatles in 1964. The 11 consecutive weeks 21 spent at number one in the UK beat Madonna’s previous record for a female solo artist of nine weeks in 1990 for The Immaculate

“My life is full of drama and I won’t have time to worry about something as petty as what I look like. I don’t like going to the gym.” (Rolling Stone) “Imagine if you weren’t in an office job or whatever, and you were performing your feelings as I do. It’s kind of like not getting over something, isn’t it, because every night you have to talk about it.”

I love seeing Katy Perry’s boobs and bum. Love it. But that’s not what my music is about. I don’t make music for eyes: I make music for ears.” (Rolling Stone) “I’m learning about tax at the moment with my accountant… Pfff! Trains are always late, most state schools are shit and I’ve gotta give you like four million quid. Are you ‘avin a laugh? “BLASTING THE BAS**RD” My Personal Pink Mountain Climb By Jo Ryan

Breast cancer – yeah, it’s flipping hard but it’s do-able! Let’s be honest: how many 42-year-olds actually stop and think that this beast could ever affect their own lives? I never did. I have always danced through life, as I like to call it. Life is for enjoying, spending time with loved ones and good friends, having a laugh, working hard… bad things don’t happen to you. You only hear of other people’s bad luck, having been touched with the Big C wand… Don’t you? That’s what I believed until it touched me. 07/12/10… I will never forget the day I found Mr Lump. The doubts started in my mind: could it be BC? No, of course not, it’ll just be a cyst, nothing to worry about. As always, positive thinking. I have always been a strong, happy character. This time, however, I was wrong and I was faced with a huge mountain to climb… and am still climbing. 30/12/10… The day I was diagnosed. I will never forget the emotions that I and my family went through from the day I was told I had breast cancer and during the next week. The bottom literally falls out of your world. It is a fear of the unknown. The Big C has hit me. The sheer fear that I would not see my little boy grow up. The heartbreak at seeing my mum and dad, sister, other family members and close friends so upset, unable to help me yet all by my side like rocks. My rocks that have been with me throughout the past nine months and I know who will always be there for me. I hit rock bottom that first week and allowed myself to cry lots and lots, shout and scream into the open air, lie in my bed and

40

cover myself with the duvet and wallow in my dark and dreary thoughts. Questions… so many questions and no answers to pacify my mind. Why me? Will I live? Will I die? Is it just in my breast? Has it travelled to other parts of my body? Non-stop worry, fear, a feeling of being totally out of control. This was without doubt the worst week of my life. But from somewhere deep within I found a strength that I never knew I had and from then on I have grabbed hold of the reins and ridden my way up and around my mountain, head down, fighting all the way. It’s a rollercoaster, you can’t get off… so many twists and turns around the mountainside, dizzy, sick, tired, but you carry on and you just do it Why? Because it is the hardest job you will ever be given in this lifetime, but it is do-able. I had one thing always clear in my mind throughout the treatments and that was that I had to be in control. I was in control of cancer and not cancer in control of me. Psychologically this helped me enormously. There are dark days when you fall down and it hurts more than anything has ever hurt in your life. I allowed myself to have those dark days, crying so much that I thought I didn’t have any tears left. Trying to sleep but troubled with nightmares and so tired, so very tired. Then it’s tomorrow, a new day, and you wake up with so much energy and positivity and once again you are in control and ready to battle on. You have to fall down sometimes;

this allows you to regenerate energy levels to get back on the roller-coaster and take the ride. I have received treatment in Clinica Juaneda and Policlina Miramar. I was lucky enough to meet with two wonderful ladies, patients like me. We called ourselves the Three Musketeers and have been on the journey together. We are a great support for each other. I started chemotherapy in January 2011 for a duration of six months. As my Mr Lump was a large boy I could not be operated on first; the oncology team decided to start me on chemotherapy for six months to try to reduce the size of him. The chemo is again the unknown and the fear sets in. Once again I wanted to be in control of the side-effects I could have. Those of you who know me will remember me with my long dark hair. Knowing that I would lose my hair I took the first step in cutting it shoulder length. I then shaved it all off at the first clump that fell out in my hand. And I felt great, not sad, not upset I had lost my hair. Just fantastic that I had chosen to shave it, not the cancer making it fall out around my shoulders. Control, that’s what it’s all about… being in control. The side-effects from the chemo are different for everyone and I have to say I was lucky. It wasn’t easy, I would be a fibber to say so, but you can do it and it is now a distant memory to me. From the very start of my treatment I took a huge step back out of society and got my

head down and concentrated on me and my cure. It was the only way I knew how to deal with it: 110 per cent me and my new job I had been given for 2011. I found therapy in sharing my story, talking about it and being open about my breast cancer. I do understand that everyone is different and totally respect those who deal with their cancer in a more private way. We have always been a close family, even though I have lived overseas for 23 years. My parents have been at my side from day one, and my sister and her family too. I could not have been so brave had it not been for my family, I feel very lucky to have them and will forever be in their debt. I am also amazed at the enormous support I have received and still receive from friends and people who were not friends as such before my diagnosis and now will be in my heart for life. I used Facebook as a form of communication during my illness. As I went through my treatment and climbed my mountain I gave updates on how I was doing, and where I was up to. These updates were called “Blasting the Bas**rd”. The feedback from friends and acquaintances has been uplifting and inspiring and has helped me be stronger, keep fighting and beat it. I will be forever grateful to all of you. Such was the support from friends that back in March various fund-raising events were organised by close friends here in Puerto Pollença. To my utter amazement the whole community came together and we managed to raise over €8,000 for AECC, the Spanish Association for Cancer. The month of March will always be magical to me from now on. My sister and her work colleagues raised over £3,000 for cancer research. They organised events at work and all ran the race for life for cancer research in May, and I was lucky enough to be able to fly over between chemo sessions to support the girls. I was proud as punch that day and I will be running the race with all the girls in 2012. We will continue the fund-raising events for many years on. They

will be a celebration that you can beat the bas***rd. From the above events here in Mallorca and also back in the UK we managed to spread awareness, and breast cancer was on everyone’s lips. We got coverage on English Radio Mallorca, the local newspaper covered the events, and on top of this we raised lots of money for cancer research. Throughout my journey I have felt a feeling of togetherness and being protected by family and friends. What a lucky girl I am, is a thought that I have on a daily basis. Once the chemo was finished I felt like I was half-way up the mountain. During chemo the stops on the way up are more and more: you feel weak, lose your way a little, everything seams blurry, you can’t climb as quick as before. So you rest. Put your feet up and work on building up your energy. It’s the only way. I had a lumpectomy and lymph glands removed on 26 July 2011. I am in total awe of my medical team and have to say a huge thank you to Dr Moragues and Dr Rifas and his team. To say I love my doctors is a bit over the top, but I hold them so high in my esteem. They are life savers and have saved my life. Your medical team become like your family during breast cancer treatment and I am lucky to have the best team I could ever have wished for. The operation has been a success! Mr Lump has reduced from more than four centimetres down to seven millimetres – fantastic results. I have had six weeks break between the operation and starting radiotherapy. I am now doing “rads”, as those in the know call them. Radiotherapy is nothing compared to chemotherapy and I am now four sessions down with 16 sessions to go. Looking back on the past nine months, my life has certainly changed. It has to be the worst experience of my life, yet I feel that I can take lots of positive thoughts, emotions and experiences from this climb. It’s still not over but now I can see the peak clearly in front of me. Not long to go now to reach

the summit and finally be able to say… That’s it, I beat the bas**rd. I would just like to say a massive thank you to all my family, friends and medical team for coming on this journey with me. Samy Ryan, you are my goal and the light at the end of the tunnel and I will never give up the fight. Mum, Dad and DD, my big sister – you all rock my world! Should anyone be at the start of a journey like mine, please feel free to contact me. I would be very happy to share experiences and answer any questions anyone should have. Email me at: villaplusmallorca1@yahoo.co.uk

Jo Ryan lives in Puerto Pollença and has been in Spain for 23 years. She is a happy single mother of a son, Samuel. She is overseas area manager for villaplus.com. She is a northern lass who loved Spanish from a young age; she studied in northern Spain and always dreamed of living in Spain. She speaks fluent Spanish and Catalan. She says she is “in love with life!” Her battle with breast cancer inspired friends, family and local residents in the north of the island to get together for various fund-raising events in March of this year. In total over €8,000 was collected for AECC, the cancer support charity on Mallorca.

My Mallorca Scott Maughan Scott Maughan is from a scenic village called Ferrybridge. If you have ever had the pleasure of visiting Yorkshire or driving through and spotting those picturesque cooling towers at the side of the motorway… Yep, just there! He is the promotions manager at Mallorca Rocks where he has been busy all summer promoting the acts. He thought that he was going for a meeting about arranging a party there and it turned out to be a job offer. He is also busy promoting the Oktoberfest happening in Peguera this month. He suspects it is his love of beer and buxom ladies that led him to talk very fondly and spread the good word. If he was not working there he would be present enjoying himself so he might as well get paid for the privilege. That’s what he calls job satisfaction! As if that were not enough, he is participating in the TUI Palma Half Marathon this month. Last year he and a good friend Charlie ran to raise money for Help for Heroes. This time he is doing it for Disability Snowsports UK, which gives people the chance to experience something wonderful they thought they might not get the chance to do or return to. As Scott says, “It kind of puts us whingers in our place when someone missing a limb or someone with severe learning difficulties slogs away at it and cracks it.” You can donate at: justgiving.com/ Scott-Maughan What originally brought you to Mallorca? Many years ago as a young and foolish whipper snapper I came to Mallorca for my first holiday away with the guys. Three days in I managed to break my hand and spent the rest of the holiday looking like a submarine in the pool. The two girls that ran our pool bar asked me to stay, and let me crash on their ridiculously small “apartment” floor. I was working in a bar back home before I started uni and well I wasn’t exactly in pint pulling form with a plaster cast. So I waved my friends off as they went home and here I am! What is your favourite place on Mallorca? Tough call… this island has so many unbelievable little spots but I have one really fond memory of sitting out on the rock at Cala Falco beach with my guitar (yes, I swam there with it) watching the sunrise after a midnight barbecue with my friends. Have you visited any of the other Balearic islands? I’ve done the three big ones and Mallorca was actually the last of the three now I think about it. I went as a kid to Menorca, then with some crazy ex-girlfriend to Ibiza and finally to Mallorca. Which is the most fascinating place you have visited in the world? Not too sure. I’ve been to the Kutzcamera museum in St Petersburg, which is a weird place! I’m sure if you look it up you can see what I mean. I was in San Fran with some friends at Halloween two years ago and that was fascinating. When people’s pets have better

44

costumes than you do, then you know you’re in for an interesting night out on the tiles. What is your favourite Mallorca dish? I love the food here and I’ve always been a huge seafood fan, even as a youngster. So to live in the Med with all the amazing fish and shellfish is heaven for me Drink? I’m being really good at the minute with my training but I don’t mind a cheeky cider here or there and I am known to always keep a good malt in my ski school locker in Andorra. What is your attitude to social networking sites? For someone like me who does their fair share of drifting it’s a great way to stay in touch. It’s helped me catch up with old uni friends and stay in contact with my friends from here when they head off to wherever in the winter months. I use Facebook but I don’t bother with the Twitter thing. What is the last film you watched? Very randomly, a documentary film called Religulous. it’s a bit of a fun poke at all religion in a very intelligent way. It’s a couple of years old and I had not heard of it. I stumbled across it the other day and thought it was a great watch. Very funny too. What animal do you identify with? At the moment anything hairy. A Yeti? Do you have any unfulfilled ambitions? I always wanted to be a pro football player as a kid but that’s not going to happen. I’d quite

like to keep pursuing my skiing and see where that takes me. If I train hard enough, and with a little luck, I’d love to be a trainer one day.

Desert Island book?

Desert island? All alone? I think any of the following subscriptions: Playboy, Private, Readers Wives special. I don’t care what anyone says, there is only so many times you could read the one book but if you were stranded with a copy of Razzle that would keep you happy on those lonely nights! Although I love autobiographies and biographies. I’m not much of a fantasy reader and I cannot get my head around adults who read Harry Potter. Which person (living or dead) do you most admire and why? I don’t know about most admire but I like some of the forward thinking of Aleister Crowley. Not so much some of the weird things but the whole “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law”. Basically live life as you want to; live it and enjoy every moment. Way ahead of his time. I’m not so big into his black magic and smoking opium, constantly thinking you’re meeting all kinds of gods. I know full well he was just tripping balls. Guilty pleasure? I don’t think I have one really. Making noise with my guitar maybe! Which was your favourite act this summer at Mallorca Rocks? For me Biffy Clyro and Madness were the ones that stood out and didn’t disappoint but I thought 2Many DJ’s were epic too.

Nautical Update By Peter Franklin

Peter Franklin is editor of The Islander yachting magazine for the Balearics.

What has the

Monaco Yacht Show got to do with Mallorca?

Whoever said that the summer is a quiet time in the press industry? Well, if you are editing a yachting magazine it’s definitely not the case for sure.

Table set for potential purchasers onboard the Superyacht Helix, on show at Monaco.

In fairness there are a few quiet weeks during August when many yachts are away on summer cruises, and I do manage to enjoy a relaxing and much appreciated boating holiday. But before we know it the boat show season is under way again, signalled by the most spectacular one of all – the Monaco Yacht Show, which this year was held from 21 to 24 September. This is a true thoroughbred superyacht show, which has around 100 of the largest, most technically advanced and elegantly sumptuous floating palaces in the world on display, with no boat less than 30 metres (100 feet) long being given a place. Apart from that, there are three massive air-conditioned tents where everything from the latest designer luxury watches to bespoke yacht interiors, the latest marine engines and navigation equipment through to the world’s top class marinas, are representing themselves and entertaining well-heeled clients. This year we spent two days there. We just surfed along on a wave of buzzing enthusiasm amid bustling crowds of visitors, the like of which I have not witnessed there before in several previous visits. And at an entry fee of €65 per day (for those not invited as marine professionals) you can be sure that not too many of the attendees were there just for a day of boat dreaming to keep the kids and the mother-in-law quiet!

General scene at the Monaco Yacht Show.

46

In the mornings before leaving for the show I had been watching on BBC TV news reports about how the financial world is teetering on the edge of another meltdown and double dip recession. Imagine how strange it felt to then be surrounded by people with so much money to spend it could make your eyes water.

Of course, most people know that during the past 18 months the number of billionaires in the world has increased over and above the figure for 2008, and that much of this new wealth is being created in the Far East and eastern Europe. That was certainly in evidence at the Monaco show with many potential buyers of multi million dollar yachts coming from outside of the euro zone, Britain and the US. In fact one stunning yacht that I had been viewing for the purposes of preparing a press article had a full silver service dining table set out on the massive shaded aft deck, and several cooks busy in the galley preparing for a visiting Chinese family who were eating on board that evening, They were reportedly close to the point of signing the contract to become its owners at a price tag of €33 million. Before I explain why this boat show is so important for Mallorca (just in case you think I’m losing the drift of this article’s title,) I would just like to use the abovementioned yacht as an example of how entrepreneurial and investment-minded these superyacht builders can be. This particular one, named Helix, is from a long-established Dutch shipyard called Feadship, who are world famous in the large yacht industry for their workmanship and attention to detail, with superb steel and woodworking skills handed down through generations of Dutch families. But even with this huge reputation behind them and a full order book they have invested in this yacht as a speculative build with no guaranteed orders. This means that not only do they have the cost of building the yacht but they have to man it with a captain and eight crew members, and completely fit it out with all the extras imaginable such as jet skis, fast tenders and the latest audiovisual technology. (All by Bang & Olufsen

no less!) Then they pay to send her around the world to the big yacht shows in order to get clients interested. And all this for a series of six yachts maximum, because if they build more of the same design the clients will not be happy with the loss of exclusivity. As a working group member of the local nautical business association in Mallorca I am involved with putting together a global survey featuring financial data from all the countries with superyacht activity. This will be presented to many governments including those in Spain and the Balearics. Why? Because it has been recognised even in the US that most politicians are simply not aware of the superyacht sector as a massive jobcreating, revenue-generating industry in its own right, and that it can contribute so much to their economies at a time when the world needs new vibrant commercial activities. This leads me on neatly to why the Monaco Yacht Show has great significance to Mallorca and to Palma in particular. Firstly, Palma has a large and long-established marine services infrastructure built around the local boatyard facilities, which are superbly equipped for refit, repair and maintenance of superyachts in the port. A large number of these companies will be found exhibiting at Monaco or visiting to talk with clients and other contacts in the industry. Secondly, and without any shadow of a doubt, when the Monaco Yacht Show is successful then much of that positive influence eventually rubs off on Palma. Because, apart from the above-mentioned refit facilities, we also have one of the highest number of superyachts in the Mediterranean having their home port here. This means that captains, crews and sometimes the yacht owners themselves live on the island, and use the everyday facilities. Then there is also provisioning, entertainment, fuel, marina services and yacht management, which are all busy and vibrant businesses contributing to our local economy.

Global Ocean Race a PuBlic send-oFF FroM PalMa ThaT could, and should, have Been BeTTer… Turning to a less flamboyant and definitely more athletic branch of the water sports world, I cannot finish without mentioning the global ocean race, which started from Palma on sunday 25 september. This will take six brave double-handed crews around the world in a feat of endurance and superb seamanship that should see them back here in Mallorca sometime in March with an eventual winner. The whole point of the gor is actually the opposite of what you see in superyachts, but no less driven by man’s passion for the sea. The class 40 sailing yachts used by the four male and two female crews were originally designed as an affordable “one class” offshore racer, without a lot of the modern and highly expensive features like composite hulls and kevlar sails, etc. so, although very seaworthy and dependable, they rely more on the skills and sailing knowledge of the crews than some of their more technological counterparts.

section of the website. here you can follow the progress of the yachts in real time, and see how they are doing against each other, and against the unpredictable elements in some of the world’s most dangerous seas. and when they come back in March, please god all safely, then let’s give them the biggest turn-out of people, and the most heartfelt rousing welcome that they could ever imagine, and make them truly feel like it was all worth it!

With so much at stake and with such an opportunity to showcase Palma as the centre of yachting excellence that it undoubtedly is, i have to say that i stood on the dock with a great feeling of disappointment and sadness when the last boat left the dock on the Paseo Marítimo towards the official start line, which was just off the cathedral outside the main harbour breakwater. only a few dozen people were there, who applauded enthusiastically enough as each boat left, but the whole occasion was sadly lacking in any real gusto and most definitely very poorly attended by the people of Palma. Where was the Tv coverage showing the vibrancy of Palma harbour’s waterfront and its yachting heritage? Where was the brass band and the banner-waving cheer leaders? Where indeed was the sense of occasion? and how must those crews have felt about starting from Palma, when going off to such a challenging six months at sea and into “who knows what” in the way of adventures and tribulations?

Perfect Putting Regardless of what level you play golf at, it is a fact that around 40 per cent of your blows will be made using the “flat stick”. Power is no advantage; age or sex is no disadvantage. This is the area where we can all be as good as the pros. Putting is “a game within a game”, as the famous saying says. Here are five things the pros do and the amateurs don’t…

Aiming

You can trust your eyes but only if you know what they see. Find out how your eyes work and then trust them. Get a friend to stand behind you and tell you where you are aiming. You may find the results hard to believe but everything looks very different when we stand side-on to a putt and turn your head to look at the hole. If you discover you have a natural tendency to aim a bit left or right, allow for it – don’t fight it.

Stroke

Pull not push… The hands should be in front of the putter face at all times, leading the putter through impact. Ensure the followthrough is longer than the back swing to promote an accelerating strike. Every putt is a straight putt! Once you decide where to aim all you can do is hit it straight on that line. Try to keep the face aiming at the intended starting line at all times. Straight back and straight through.

Grip

Hold the putter in the life lines of both hands. As you can see in the down-the-line photo (the middle one) your forearms should be an extension of the putter shaft. It is imperative your putter is the correct length and lie angle for you so that it sits flat on the ground and allows you to adopt a good putting posture. In most cases this means shortening the putter. The putter is the club you use more than any other club in the bag. Get a professional to custom-fit it for you.

Posture

Bad golf posture is good putting posture. Nice wide stance to promote stability… Fifty-five per cent of your weight on your target foot to enable a pulling motion through the impact area… Rag doll like posture – totally relax the neck muscles, allowing the head to fall into the position where the pivot point of the “pendulum” (cervical vertebrae No.7) is parallel to the ground. See centre photo.

COG

The Centre of Gravity should remain as still as possible throughout the whole range of movement. Lock in your feet, knees and hips, allowing the movement of shoulders and arms only. In a true “pendulum” motion the only thing that should move is the “Y” shape that is formed with your arms and the putter. See photo on the right.

Another famous saying: “Putting is all about feel.” Yeah, right! Putting is a skill and it can be learned just like any other skill.

FLAVOURS OF THE MED Life & Living

One Pot Wonders

By Gillaine Hathaway

So it’s the month of October and the sun (hopefully!) still shines down, but temperatures are cooler and the shops are now full of new seasonal products. It’s a time when I think back to the old days and all those marvellous dishes our mothers and grandmothers used to prepare. Dishes made in one pot, full of flavour and goodness, and of course so easy to serve… just a big bowl straight onto the table accompanied by some nice crusty bread. Those were the days when stock cubes were used all the time, but nowadays you can substitute these with easily obtainable meat, fish or vegetable stock. Let’s start with a Spanish classic made with chard and other tasty vegetables, as well as the all-important chorizo and morcilla…

Potage de Acergas Ingredients (serves 4): 1 bunch of chard • Strip off the leaves and reserve them for adding 20 minutes before serving, with at least 150 grams of chorizo (more if preferred) and optional morcilla (just a little), and three tablespoons of SOS-brand rice.

Into a large pan place: 115 gr garbanzos (chickpeas) soaked overnight piece of stewing beef, around 1/2 kg piece of pancetta, approx. 150 gr or more (or use piece of fat bacon) chard stalks chopped Large piece of squash cut into chunks 6 to 8 tomatoes peeled and chopped

• Cook all together for several hours.

2 onions peeled and chopped

• Add the leaves, morcilla and rice toward the end and serve.

4 garlics peeled and chopped, 1 large potato peeled and chopped 3 tablespoons oil 2 teaspoons sweet paprika (pimentón dulce) 3 chicken cubes,

Potage Rojo Ingredients (serves 4): 150 gr dried haricot beans soaked in water overnight 1 generous slice of squash chopped into chunks after removing rind and seeds large onion 2 large ripe tomatoes 1 carrot cut into thin rounds 2 or 3 garlic cloves finely chopped

• Put the above into a large pan, pour over a small glass of oil and mix well in order to coat the vegetables. • Stir in one tablespoon of sweet paprika.

The panceta should be removed but the beef, which in the old days was served separately as the main plate along with the potatoes, can be flaked into chunks – making this a hearty one pot wonder.

The following fishy delight uses squid, a fish that might frighten some of us and takes a little while to prepare, but is well worth the effort. Look for the medium-sized squid at the fish counter, as they generally also have large and small and they do not work so well in this dish.

Squid stew Ingredients (serves 4): 1 kg of fresh squid (approx. 10 cm in length) 2 medium onions peeled and sliced 2 (or more) garlic cloves finely chopped 6 to 8 large ripe Spanish tomatoes skinned and chopped 500 gr potatoes, peeled and cut into walnut-sized chunks

4 generous tablespoons sunflower oil 1 glass of white cooking wine (large) 1 fish cube or concentrated fish stock (approx. 6 tablespoons) 1 teaspoon sweet red paprika 1 generous teaspoon mixed spice salt and pepper

• Cut open each squid, remove and discard the transparent bone and innards, cut off the tentacles where they join and cut out the “beak“ (a hard round lump) and discard. Scrape off any of the dark skin, wash well and cut into slices two centimetres wide and approximately five centimetres long, and drain. • Heat the oil in a casserole and fry the onions and garlic until soft. • Stir in the tomatoes, add the seasonings and cook for several minutes before adding the wine. • When the mixture is simmering nicely, add the chopped squid and cook for a further 10 minutes, again stirring well. • Finally add the potatoes and fish stock.

• Cover with cold water, bring to the boil and then simmer gently.

• Leave the stew to cook, partially covered, giving a stir from time to time to ensure that the potatoes cook evenly (approximately 20 minutes).

• Cook until the beans are tender, stirring from time to time.

• Check with a skewer to see when done.

• Now add a 450-gram tin of sieved tomato (tomate triturado), 100 grams of noodles (fideos Nº4) and two chicken cubes.

• Normally the potato thickens the sauce sufficiently, but if not mix a tablespoon of flour with wine • Check the seasonings and serve. If you have any left-overs you can prepare the following “Cheats” Fish Soup, which is oh so tasty!

• Mix well and simmer for approximately 10 minutes, until the noodles are cooked.

• Put the leftovers into your food processor and blend. Then add a tin of good quality lobster soup, easily available from your supermarket, and blend again.

• Adjust the seasoning, adding salt and freshly ground pepper to taste and more water if necessary as the pasta is inclined to soak up the water.

• Pour in some cream and blend. • Transfer the mixture to a saucepan and add a couple of tablespoons of brandy and some fish stock until you have a nice soupy consistency. • Simmer for approximately 10 minutes and serve with some croutons. It also freezes well. Another tasty Spanish classic that is well worth a try…

52

Cocido de Col Ingredients (serves 4): ½ kg chickpeas soaked in water overnight piece of ham bone (hueso de jamón) 600 gr cabbage with core and stalks removed and cut into pieces 300 gr chicken cut into small pieces 100 gr black pudding (morcilla) 3 medium-sized potatoes cut into chunks 1½ litre water salt and pepper to taste

• Pour the water into a large saucepan and bring to the boil. Then add the chickpeas, ham bone and chicken. • When boiling, lower the heat and simmer, until the chickpeas are tender (approximately 30 minutes). • Add the cabbage and, after 15 minutes, the potatoes. • Allow to simmer for a further 20 minutes until the potatoes are done. • Check the seasoning, adding salt if required, and serve.

And last but by no means least a really easy-peasy one pot wonder made with pork…

Pork and Pea Stew Ingredients (serves 4): 1 pork loin (approx 1 kg) 2 to 3 garlics peeled and chopped 1 tablespoon parsley ½ kg potatoes peeled and cut into bite-sized chunks ½ kg frozen peas ½ litre chicken or vegetable stock 2 tablespoons olive oil salt and pepper to taste

• Heat the oil in a saucepan. • Clean off any skin and gristle from the pork and chop into bitesized chunks and fry in the oil until brown. • Add in the garlic and cook for a few minutes. • Mix in the potatoes chunks and stir well for a few minutes. • Stir in the stock and the parsley, bring to the boil and then leave to simmer for approximately 20 minutes or until the potatoes are soft. • Finally add the frozen peas and cook for a further 10 minutes. By now the potatoes should have disintegrated a little and made the stew into a nice creamy texture. • Season with salt and pepper and serve.

SIKI Restaurant

Works of art with food

Review by Laura Penn

Siki means four seasons in Japanese. In Santa Ponça Siki means a top class restaurant serving sushi and Japanese cuisine. Chef Gohei Kishi has been honing his skills in the kitchen for 16 years, working in Tokyo, Madrid and now Mallorca. Born in France to Japanese parents he grew up in the family restaurant kitchen in Paris then left to work in a traditional restaurant in the Japanese capital. Gohei is now using his wealth of experience to create works of art with food, as each dish at Siki is prepared with care and skill. Siki is the sister restaurant to the wellestablished Sakana Sushi in Palmanova but it is not just raw fish on offer as there is a selection of other dishes including the popular “robata” (Japanese for barbecue). The menu is evolving and one new addition is scallop truffle as a starter, with an exquisite yet subtle sweet and sour taste. Everything sushi is available here and the combo plates provide a range of dishes to tantalise every tastebud. The non-sushi dishes include Butterfish Saikyo, a marinated white fish, duck with figs and citric honey, fresh oysters, green bean tempura,

salmon tartare and Gyu Tataki (thinly sliced beef with garlic). The combo dishes provide an opportunity of sampling a little bit of everything and the meat combo has chicken meatballs, a strip of sirloin, asparagus, tsuma spinach relish with moro miso sauce, bacon with cherry tomato, chicken pieces with spring onions and “dango”, which is Japanese for beef meatballs. The dessert menu is selective but wideranging with tiramisu, fondant chocolate, ice cream, NY cheesecake, Siki crepe and fruits sashimi with a yuzu syrup. Situated on the Santa Ponça Boulevard, Siki is easy to find straight off the motorway (just look for the large Buddha head statue) and the large terrace and roomy interior mean there is seating for a total of 150plus people. Parking is easy, the restaurant is staying open all year and the team at Siki are planning live music nights throughout the winter.

classic French grapes such as cabernet sauvignon and Merlot are added to the blend but the base of the wine is Tempranillo. Tempranillo is the spanish grape made famous in the rioja region of spain. The Tempranillo gives different results in Mallorca to the familiar rioja version but shows great personality and promise. The wine was aged 10 months in american and French oak and then bottle-aged. Description: visually it is bright and clean, with a low intensity of red tones with orange fringes. The wine has a pleasant aromatic nose with fresh notes of spiced pepper, dark ripe fruits and vanilla oak essence. son Puig has a smooth enjoyable beginning due to the great balance of acidity and ripe fruit. This medium body red wine has a short finish and really opens up if decanted for at least a half hour.

“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.” Mark Twain

ANTI-AGEING SPECIAL it’s my birthday this month and i’m 36. i can’t quite believe where the last 20 years have gone. i don t feel any different – i still have the same energy – but disturbingly I have started finding the odd grey hair. Age seems to catch up with you so quickly while you are busy getting on with life and it seems to go faster every year. We all have to age but why not compare ourselves to expensive wine that improves with age. Just because the number increases it doesn’t change anything. i’m not doing anything differently today than i have done before – maybe a bit more serious (at times). What else can we do to keep ourselves youthful?

DELAY AND REVERSE AGEING Body fat and ageing: Body fat increases until middle age and then weight typically begins to decrease. The body fat also moves deeper in the body as we age. decrease body fat by weight training – using weights and toning up fatty tissue. Muscle ageing: Muscle tone declines about 22 per cent by age 70, though exercise can slow this decline. Bone ageing: starting at age 35, our bones begin to lose density. Walking, running and resistance training can slow this process. We’re not just about living longer: we want to live longer and feel good doing it. a 65-year-old who exercises regularly can expect to live without any disabilities until 83 (add in a healthy diet and that number can increase even more). so live long and live well by exercising.

58

exercise and resistance training (working out with weights) is the best way of keeping yourself young. The american college of Sports Medicine (ACSM) now has fitness guidelines specific to weight training for people over 50. The advice: perform such exercises two or three times a week to condition all of the major muscle groups -- arms, legs, shoulders and trunk. The goal is to lift a weight that’s heavy enough to achieve 10 to 15 repetitions per session before the muscles become fatigued. Because aerobic activity and strength training are each important for health, the acsM recommends that able adults do both on a regular basis; 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic activity is advised three to five days a week and weight training should be done for 20 to 30 minutes two or three times a week. The guidelines also suggest that people perform stretching exercises – which increase the range of motion, or amount of movement, of joints -- a minimum of two or three times a week. a number of studies have demonstrated that, given adequate training stimulus,

older men and women show similar or greater strength gains compared with young individuals as a result of resistance training, according to the researchers. even if you have never exercised before, it is not too late to begin reaping the benefits that an active lifestyle has to offer. study after study shows that you can begin reversing the ageing process no matter how old you are, or how inactive you may have been.

I CAN – I DID!

set yourself a challenge… The half ironman was a 1.9-kilometre swim (45 minutes), a 90-kilometre bike ride (three hours) and a half marathon (two hours) – and i enjoyed it. it just goes to prove that if you write down your goals you are more likely to achieve them. TOP ANTI-AGEING FOODS 1. AVOCADOS

loaded with healthy fats to help improve your cholesterol.

2. wALNUTS

Bursting with omega-3s.

3. GREEN VEGETABLES

With five or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day, we would see a huge decrease in heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure and more. So find some way to eat one more veggie or fruit this week, then add another next week until you get to nine servings. Better still, juice them and drink them in one go! Focus on leafy or deeply coloured vegetables for the most benefit.

4. wATER

This seems pretty basic. There is some disagreement in the medical world about whether or not drinking tons of water is really a good idea, but while they sort that out stay focused on water. your goal should be to make water your primary drink. This way, you’ll be drinking a no-calorie, no-chemical drink all day long instead of the many, many high-calorie, high-chemical alternatives.

5. BERRIES

Berries are packed full of anti-oxidants and other chemicals that your body can use to make repairs and prevent some of the damage caused by ageing. Best of all, berries taste really, really good. Be sure to eat your berries without any sauces or sugars. Just enjoy them plain for their goodness or throw them in a whey protein isolate smoothie.

6. GREEN TEA

green tea has been a longevity supplement in asia for thousands of years. it is a great thing to work into your daily life. green tea contains high concentrations of just the chemicals your body needs. green tea is also inexpensive, delicious and gives a mild (and gentle) energy boost from its caffeine.

7. RED wINE

contains a substance called “resveratrol” that helps your body fight off age-related illnesses. at the end of your day have a glass or two to relax and unwind. you’ll get the benefits of a delicious drink along with the anti-ageing properties of resveratrol.

8. BEANS

Beans are a great source of healthy carbs and anti-oxidants. really, beans are a wonder food. some researchers (such as T. colin Powell) believe that animal protein may cause many of the illnesses we face as we age.

9. MELONS

Melons have some of the best nutritional profiles of all the fruits. They are pulpy (so they fill you up) and contain lots of vitamins for your body. Work melons into your daily/ weekly diet and you’ll be reaping health benefits as you enjoy them.

10. GARLIC

eating a clove of garlic a day (raw or cooked) helps to protect the body against cancer and heart disease. The cardio-protective effects of garlic are well recorded. one 1994 study in iowa (usa) of 41,837 women between the age of 55 and 69 suggested that women who ate a clove of garlic at least once a week were 50 per cent less likely to develop colon cancer. another study at Tasgore Medical college in india suggested that garlic reduced cholesterol levels and assisted blood thinning more effectively than aspirin, thus helping to reduce the risk of heart disease.

11. GINGER

This spicy root can boost the digestive and circulatory systems, which can be useful for older people. ginger may also help to alleviate rheumatic aches and pains.

12.YOGHURT

yoghurt is rich in important minerals such as potassium, calcium, protein and B vitamins. apart from these, what makes yogurt one of the most powerful foods is the presence of live bacteria. This bacteria helps absorption of nutrients in the intestines and stabilises the immune system. Make sure it’s plain and organic.

i put chocolate last on this list only because it doesn’t need to be higher up to get your attention. chocolate (dark chocolate, that is) is good for you and full of anti-oxidants. The only drawback is that chocolate also has calories. have a little square every day and don’t overdue it.

Things you’ll need: • Nail glue • Orange stick • Nail polish remover • Nail file • Empty teabag • Fingernail clippers • Scissors

Step 1 – Remove all polish from your fingernails and wash your hands. Fingernails should be clear from varnish residue and oil. Make sure any stray parts of the nail have been removed to prevent snagging.

Step 2 – Take the empty teabag and cut it to size. The size should not be wider than your nail but can extend past the end, as you will remove this later on.

Step 3

– apply a thin layer of glue to the nail and apply the teabag. use an orange stick to pat down the teabag, making sure the glue has completely covered it. smooth out any ridges or bubbles you might have.

Step 4 – Once the first layer has completely dried, gently buff out any ridges and apply another layer of glue, and repeat previous steps with the orange stick. allow the nail to dry then trim away any excess and then buff to make smooth. if the nail still feels uneven, repeat the whole process with another layer of glue, teabag, glue and buff.

Step 5 – once dry and smooth, apply your usual base coat, nail varnish and top coat, allow to dry and, Bob’s your uncle! a new (albeit temporary) nail. This process allows you to go about your day-to-day routine without fear of ripping your nail off at any given moment. i would advise changing after two weeks by using an acetone-based remover. Follow the steps again until the crack in the nail has had time to grow out.

Fun-filled finale to Rey Jaume Fiesta

Text and Photos: laura Penn

The annual rey Jaume Fiesta in santa Ponça reached its climax with the traditional parade of Moors and christians along the main road of the town. The procession started at the cross near the marina which marks the landing of king James i back in september 1229. it then made its way to the “little Beach” and then on to the main beach of the town where a large, good-natured battle took place. hundreds of people dressed up as either Moors or the invading christians to take part in the parade and many more lined the route and cheered and applauded the participants. Following the main event people enjoyed strolling through the medieval market with stalls along the promenade. The following evening a spectacular fireworks display lit up the sky over the town, marking the official ending of the yearly fortnight-long fiesta.

Superb quality dining offering real value for money in an outstanding setting offering meat, fish, pasta and pizza with an excellent choice of fine wine. Live music every Friday night and the best Sunday Roast in Mallorca.

Fund-raising festivities in support of animal association The SOS Animal Association, which is based near Calvià village, held a fun day in Puerto Portals to raise funds to continue its work – which has led to shelter being found for approximately 600 abandoned dogs and cats over the past decade. The festive day included a dog show, a raffle, activities for children, many stalls and live entertainment on stage. It was the ninth year that the festival had taken place and many dogs and their owners attended. As well as finding homes for abandoned pets. SOS Animal distributes food to stray animals and has developed a campaign for controlling numbers in cat colonies over the past 10 years with a programme of castration. Association president Maxi Lange said that recently, with the economic crisis, there had been a rise in abandoned animals. If you can adopt an animal or want more information go to: sos-animal-mallorca.org.

October

Penn to Paper

rather foolishly i always think of october as a quiet month on the island. i should have learnt better by now! Just when you thought it was safe to relax after a crazy summer… along comes a big beach party, a stupendous sponsored walk, a giant golf tournament in europe and a boisterous beer festival. let’s start with the beach party. For 17 years a gang of lovely nutters called the amigas Para siempre have come to the island to have fun and raise money for kids who need help here on Mallorca. This year i was asked to help with the entertainment for their party at the Boatyard Bar on the beach in Magaluf so i have called on all the amazing entertainers that we have here on the island and, as usual, they have all stepped up to help. The money we raise will go to the allen graham charity 4 kidz. now i believe in angels. (i know… step away from the crazy woman with wings tattooed on her back!) Well, if you meet allen graham you will believe in them too as he is a walking “earth angel”. i have known allen for over six years now, and despite being a gentleman of a certain age (he won’t mind me saying) he never stops helping others. he used to be the salvation army pastor here on Mallorca and since he “retired” he has been busier than ever, distributing clothes and food to those who need it and raising dosh for poor little blighters who have been abused and/or abandoned by parents who never deserved them in the first place. Meeting allen leaves you humble, but you try telling him that and he will look at you as if you are a Jedward fan. allen has cornered the market in humility. Two days to recover and then Mallorca live aid – Part 2 happens, as i have been asked by the rotary club of calvià to organise the entertainment after their big annual “Walk for Those Who can’t” on santa Ponça prom. yet again, our fab performers are happy to share their time and talent to make the event a special memory. With an estimated 500 kids taking part in the walk it is another great day for the community here on the island. Then i may go for a quick swim before i hop into a buggy to marshal at the Pinmar golf tournament. having grown over the past 22 years into the biggest amateur golf contest in europe, my mention in dispatches goes to golf pro Peter ledwidge (and the “boss”, his missus linda) organising the playing side of the competition. it is madness! With over 350 players (who all think that their scorecard is the most important) it can get a little hairy… but again, it is to raise money for charity so “nay bother” as the ledwidges say! Then it’s the oktoberfest in Peguera with beer, bosoms and bangers! so october is nothing like a quiet month. Maybe we can relax in November… hang on, Bonfire Night, Pool league, Quiz league… ah well, who needs sleep?
