After a recent gig at London’s O2 Arena the KINGS OF LEON ordered 400 shots of tequila for every one who was in the bar after the show. They stole the idea from the triple IVOR NOVELLO winner PLAN B, who bravely lined up shots for the audi ence at a gig in the Mormonrun Salt Lake City. He announced the shots were on the bar and the au dience raced there to neck them – for a laugh he repeated the feat, resulting in several fans feeling worse for wear. This upset the city’s elders and he will not be invited to play there again.

But the best story of all came a week before when festival big man MICHAEL EAVIS said he regretted booking THE WOMBLES (for younger readers, they featured in a 1970s children’s TV show cleaning up Wimbledon Common). That annoy ing video Friday by REBECCA BLACK was taken off YouTube last month after a legal dispute with the track’s writers, Ark Music, who wanted to charge net users to watch the video. When taken off air the track had had over 200 million hits. Did you know that Glastonbury will not hap pen in 2012? Talking of the Olympics – there’s only 12 months to go now but the Olympic torch made an appearance at last month’s Isle Of Wight Festival when KAISER CHIEFS front man RICKY WILSON brought the unlit torch on stage. The band played several songs from their new “pick’n’mix” album, which is available via the internet only. Clay spends the rest of the day and long into the night listening to Hannah’s voice and going to the locations she wants him to visit. The text alternates, sometimes quickly, between Hannah’s voice and Clay’s thoughts as he listens to her words, which illuminate betrayals and secrets that demonstrate the consequences of even small actions. Hannah, herself, is not free from guilt, her own inaction having played a part in a motor accident death and a rape. The message about how we treat one another, although sometimes heavy, makes for compelling reading. If you are a fan of absorbing psychological thrillers, you will love this.

Holding up the British end of things “Z-list” names such as Kerry Catona have praised the popular resorts of Magaluf and Santa Ponça as holiday destinations where they can get the obligatory all-over tan and a full-English breakfast after a night on the town. Thanks to the diversity of the island, it is a preferred location for many -#1#?%*%.&(Q$.'$0//#*(0&7(91/*A(6$%&'%&'(0( plethora of drama, soap and reality TV stars to these shores. The Sky series Mad Dogs starring Max Beesley, John Simm, Marc Warren and Philip Glenister 91/#7()#$#(%&(@02(MN[N(0&7(-)#2(0$#(60+>( again this year for a second series. This spring Magaluf was “cheated” for Malia in Crete for the 91/(?#$*%.&(."(-)#(_\(*%-+./(3)#(K&6#-:##&#$*A( with many local people volunteering to be extras on set. The most recent small screen venture to hit the island is two specials of the reality show Geordie Shore for MTV. As far as the big screen goes, do you remember the Hollywood thriller Disclosure starring Michael Douglas and Demi Moore? In reality it was the headquarters of Mallorca´s largest production company, Palma Pictures, in Marratxí’s industrial estate. Then there is sport! Countless premiership footballers and other “names” from the world of sport come to play on boats or hide out in remote villas, not to mention our home-grown stars of Rafael Nadal, Carlos Moya, Jorge Lorenzo and basketball player Rudy Fernandez, who either still live here or regularly return to their home island. Finally there is a myriad of musicians who have performed here: Simply Red, Gloria Estefan, Al Jarreau, Gloria Gaynor, George Benson, Elton John, Lionel Richie, Andrea Bocelli, Seal and Status Quo – and that is just in the past few years! More recently Jennifer Lopez famously suffered 0(j:0$7$.6#(/01",&+-%.&l(:)#&(91/%&'(".$(0(J#$man TV show at Palma’s bullring. Which is your favourite place on Mallorca? The old part of Palma. La Lonja and the area around the Borne. There are so many little tapas bars and places to be discovered. It’s a great place to take a stroll of an evening, with a wonderful atmosphere.

Drink? I like the Mallorcan wines. There are some great varieties of red wine grown on the island in Binissalem.

Have you visited any of the other Balearic Islands? I went to Ibiza a long time ago. I am sure it has changed since then. As for this time round, no, I have not had the chance to go but I would like to.

What is your favourite Mallorcan dish? It’s a bit of a cliché but paella.

What is your attitude to social networking sites? Personally I spend as little time on the computer as possible so I am not a big fan of any of them. They are useful for keeping in touch with folk overseas but not really my thing. What animal do you identify with? A ram!

IT HAS NOW BECOME A REGULAR FEATURE ON THE EUROPEAN NAUTICAL CALENDAR FOR THE FUTURE OF SUPERYACHTS CONFERENCE AND THE PALMA SUPERYACHT CUP, TAKING PLACE IN MALLORCA, BACK TO BACK, DURING THE THIRD WEEK OF THE MONTH. Once again the Future of Superyachts Conference, organised by London-based Quaynote Communications, was held in Palma. This, the sixth annual conference of its kind and the fourth successive one to be held at the Nixe Palace Hotel near Marivent, took place .&(MN8M[(f,&#(:%-)(:#1+./#(*Q##+)#*(62( Marga Dahlberg on behalf of the local nautical associations, and by Kate Mentink on behalf of the newly formed Partido Popular government. She also made reference to the work that the PP had done by talking closely with the nautical sector, which had helped them to produce a detailed commitment to yachting in their manifesto. For instance, one of the main points was to continue consultation with the yachting professionals locally in order to gather sound data that could be delivered in Madrid. With this it was intended to illustrate, in an irrefutable way, the job creation and tax/revenue generating potential from one of the world’s genuine growth markets. Conference chairman Paul Miller, who was presiding over the forum for the fourth time, mentioned that he had seen tremendous progress with lobbying by the nautical associations between his annual visits to Palma. „What seemed to be a gloomy story a few years ago, with the associations banging their heads on walls, is now looking like a real

turn-around in the making, and a boost for the superyachting industry as a whole, particularly if it soon opens up Spanish waters to larger charter yachts and all the spin-off revenues that they bring with them.“ The keynote speech of the conference was delivered by Billy Smith, the vice president of major US yacht builder Trinity Yachts. He -01>#7(06.,-(-)#(%/Q.$-0&+#(."(7%?#$*%9+0-%.&( in order to survive in ship building since the recession, and how innovative engineering and a high quality skills base keeps the business for superyachts with the established yards in Europe and America, rather than losing it to low labour cost countries. The tension, excitement and will to succeed is wholly palpable amongst the entire crew, and the onboard tactician is listened to intently before each race. Then a crew ."(*./#-%/#*(,Q(-.(MN(Q#.Q1#(:%11(011()0?#( their input into the strategy to cope with wind changes, approaches to the rounding marks of the course, and who does what in the sail handling process. Also, the owners of superyachts are individuals who have usually got where they are in life by being quick-witted and competitive. So nobody wants to win more than the boss, and they all take their racing very seriously indeed. This means that the team de-brief after each race is just as serious and sometimes a little less friendly than the tactical meeting before the race when everyone is full of expectations! For me this was the fourth year that I have had the pleasure of driving the press RIB (a )%')8*Q##7($%'%7(%&P0-061#(6.0-G(0&7(+)0*%&'( these awesome yachts around the bay, with some of the best professional yachting photographers in the world onboard for three days. I have not seen a better and more varied selection of yachts, certainly in the last

couple of years. The sight of them all sailing downwind with their brightly coloured spinna>#$(*0%1*(P2%&'A(0&7(-)#(*#0(*Q$02(6$#0>%&'(%&( white tufts around their bows, is something you never get tired of. B.(+.&'$0-,10-%.&*(-.(d$,/9$#A(-)#(.?#$011( winner. She was designed and built in Hol10&7A(0*(:#$#(/0&2(."(-)#(.-)#$(/0'&%9+#&-( entries, which I do hope we will see back again next year. My personal favourite was a yacht called Adela, a mere 55 metres (183 feet-four inches). She‘s a real classic schooner and actually built in Britain, at the Pendennis shipyard in the south-west of England. So I have chosen that one to share with you on this page. But the last word should come from American Jim Teeters, whose Bucket Rating (handicapping) system has become the industry standard for yacht racing worldwide. Jim is the man who makes sure of an even competition that relies on the skills of the crews and rewards them with success, irrespective of the huge differences in design, size, sail area and build between the yachts in a superyacht regatta. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A PROPER GRIP ON THE GOLF CLUB. MANY PROBLEMS IN THE SWING AND RESULTANT POOR SHOTS CAN BE TRACED BACK TO THE WAY WE HOLD THE CLUB. THIS MONTH WE WILL LOOK AT HOW TO ACHIEVE A PROPER GRIP AND AVOID UNNECESSARY ERRORS. First you must understand there is no perfect golf grip. There is no perfect way to hold the club for everyone. Every single person is unique and therefore variations are inevitable and acceptable. However, there are a few rules relating to the grip that must be followed if you want to see more consistency in your golf shots. Gripping a golf club is a very individual thing for everyone who plays golf. Correct grip is determined by the size and shape

of a person’s hands and size and angles of their body. The best golf grip is the one that :.$>*(6#*-(".$(2.,R(E&7(2.,T11(.&12(9&7(:)0-( works best for you by experimenting and practice. Initially when we make a change to our grip it can feel very strange so I recommend patience. Ingredients: (serves 4-6) 175 gr blanched almonds, soaked in milk 4 slices bread (crusts removed) and soaked in water for approx. 5 minutes 3 garlic cloves, peeled and sliced 5 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar salt 600 ml water handful of green grapes, halved and de-seeded

There are so many delightful recipes from all over the country, originating from what the local housewives had available, but at the same time so tasty and so good for you! One of the most famous the world over is gazpacho, a chilled soup full of vegetable goodness. Everyone in Spain has their own special recipe handed down within the family, originally made laboriously with a pestle and mortar after a great deal of peeling and skinning. The following is a never-fail plate of gazpacho honed over the years from family and friends’ recipes. See if you agree – if not you can always add a squeeze of lemon juice at the table.

While on the subject of tomatoes do try this Spanish classic of cream of tomato soup. It originates from Murcia, is so simple and easy to prepare, and makes a great change from gazpacho. The following recipe uses oregano, but you can substitute fresh basil leaves instead.

CREMA DE TOMATE Ingredients: (serves 4) 1 kilo ripe tomatoes 2 cloves garlic, peeled 2 tablespoons wine vinegar 1 tablespoon chopped oregano salt and pepper to taste

When you think about every different product you use at home for your face and body, it may well feel like you have to scoop up the entire contents of your bathroom cabinet and throw it in your bag but this is not necessarily the case. Don’t fear though: you won’t have to abandon your regular routine or the products you love – you just need to pack smart.

Generally your skin has different requirements while you are away. The drying effects of air travel can be particularly harsh; then on arriving at your destination you have hot and humid climates to deal with. Strong sunlight, late nights, extra alcohol consumption, salt water and sunburn all need to be considered.

IT’S ALWAYS A BIT CONFUSING to know what to put where, so to make life a bit easier for you I have listed below the items that you CAN take in your hand luggage without a clear plastic bag. - Lipsticks, lip pencils, eye pencils, brow pencils - Solid cream eye-shadows, concealers, cream foundations - Tweezers - Mini scissors with blades under three inches (7.5 centimetres) long - Eyelash curler - Make-up wipes - Powder products such as eye-shadows, bronzers, face powders

;#58JS#IN#TQOJB#NQ#P<TUISC your bottle of body lotion, don’t be tempted to put your jumbo size bottle in the bag. Instead take something that you can also use as an after sun and keep in the fridge where possible while you are away. There’s nothing like slapping on some cool lotion if your skin is feeling a bit burnt! ;#N<UJ#BQOJ#KIYZI!#BQ<P#that is gentle enough for face and body, something such as Dove or Nivia, both available from Muller. ;#CIVJ#<#NISNJ!#OQIBNZRIBJR a go rather than heavy bottles of foundation. Foundation generally tends to slide off in the heat; a moisturiser still offers coverage but it is much lighter. My favourites are the SPF tinted moisturisers from Mac. If you really can’t be without your trusted brand, put some into a small screw-top container and pack with the rest of your make-up.

;#N<UJ#<#EK<TU#O<BT<R<M preferably a waterproof one (False Lash Effect by Max Factor), an eye-shadow palette, a waterproof eyeliner, a small pot of cream blusher and a translucent face powder for the evening. I very much doubt you will need your bronzer but I know some of you can’t live without it so consider this your luxury item and pop it into the bag.

Following their Mallorca triumph the band headed off to play at this year’s Glastonbury Festival and they are currently appearing at music festivals all over Europe.

Summer cocktails with a stunning taste of art Palma-based law company Bufete Frau held a summer charity cocktail evening at the exclusive Zee Restaurant in Cala Estancia on the 16th of June. The event included an art exhibition of stunning sea and sky-scapes by Marieke Tollenaere from Flanders, who studied interior design at the Academy of Arts in Antwerp. These oil pieces, some composed of collages made from newspaper clippings, were inspired by her time in the nautical industry. Barbecue and show to celebrate end of school term The British International School in San Agustín ended its summer term with a performance from the pupils and a barbecue. This month’s issue is all about celebrities and stars. I have never been quite sure why famous people are called “stars”. Is it because they shine brighter than the rest of us? Or is it because their legend will live on long after their earthly bodies have gone? It would seem that when Andy Warhol famously predicted that, “In the future everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes”, not only was he spookily accurate but also a bit generous with his time. Reality TV has created the vehicle for anonymity to turn into celebrity and back to obscurity in a wink of an eye. Remember when Jade Goody was hailed as a neardeity? Or can you even remember who Steve Brookstein is? Da#(:.&(-)#(9($*-(*#$%#*(."(-)#(€8p0+-.$(%&(MNN\RG Why would anyone want to be famous? Imagine everyone knowing you and your business – you would never be able to slip out to the supermarket in your pyjamas. Of course fame brings with it advantages too: wealth, an ego boost and super injunctions, and I suppose you can always send the help out to Syp in their pyjamas. So people still yearn for that 15 minutes in the spotlight, as demonstrated by Britain’s Got Talent, Big Brother, X-Factor, etc., etc. What exactly is a celebrity? I suppose if you appear on the cover of Time magazine, have a statue of yourself in Madam Tussauds or have your name engraved on a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame then you have made IT (whatever IT is). I always say that you are only famous where you are famous. For example, there is a radio presenter in Liverpool called Billy Butler who has been famous for decades. He can hardly walk down Bold Street without being accosted, but I bet you have never heard of him. Then again, there are as-yet undiscovered tribes in the Amazon jungle who worship David Beckham. Yes, fame is a 9(+>1#("$%#&7~(L,*-(0*>(@%+)0#1(=0$$2/.$#t I was nearly famous once. By accident I found myself presenting on television for a few years in the south of England. Fortunately it was in the middle of the night so the only people who recognised me were Chinese waiters, club DJs and taxi drivers. That was bad enough. Handy though for a buffet, a boogie and ride home! I have also met and interviewed many famous folk and found them to be a mixture of personalities just like everyone else. There is a general rule of thumb that the bigger the fame, the nicer the name, which is borne out by my favourite quote on the subject. “The fact that my 15 minutes of fame has extended a little longer than 15 minutes %*(*./#:)0-(*,$Q$%*%&'(-.(/#(0&7(+./Q1#-#12(60"P(%&'(-.(/2( wife,” said Barack Obama. The following week, on the 16th, BBC Radio 1 Xtra comes to town and then on the 19th Zane Lowe is back again with Biffy Clyro.
