Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free, I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call, I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day, to laugh, To love, to work or play.
Tasks undone must stay that way
I’ve found that peace at the close of the day.
If parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah, yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish for you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life’s been full, I savoured much Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your hearts and share with me, God wants me now, He set me free.
Shannon Lee MoseleyFrieda Ellen Lindsey Snead was born on Saturday, November 21, 1953 the first and only daughter of two children to Charles Samuel Lindsey Sr. and Ralpheen Reid Lindsey of Albany, Georgia.
A sociable and socially conscious person, Frieda attended segregated schools through 9th grade: Hazard Laboratory School, at Albany State College, from kindergarten through 7th grade and Southside Junior High School for 8th and 9th grades. With the passage of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court Brown versus Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas case in May 1954, which was tied to the 14th amendment, segregated schools were declared to be unconstitutional. Despite aggressive resistance by local white power structures, court-ordered integration was established in Albany. Frieda, along with her childhood best friend, voluntarily integrated Albany High School in 1968. She was a trailblazer to say the least. Upon graduation from high school, Frieda attended Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) and continued the postsecondary collegiate tradition of the Reid and Lindsey families. While at Tuskegee, she became a member of the incomparable Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Gamma Tau Chapter.
After graduating from Tuskegee in 1974, Frieda returned to Albany, Georgia, to pursue a career in social work. She worked for 10 years at the Division of Family & Children Services (DFCS) and, with the establishment of Georgia’s Pre-K program serving at-risk four-year-old children and their families in 1992, Frieda was selected to lead the implementation of the program in Leesburg, Georgia. She married the love of her life, Joe Malone Snead, in 1992 and proudly raised two children. She retired from the Dougherty County School System in 2012 and was joyfully serving as a
long-term substitute teacher at Westover High School until the time of her passing.
Frieda had a life anchored in service. She had deep rooted ties that reached through the Albany community and beyond. She was extensively involved with her childhood church, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and her sorority via the Albany (GA) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She also served as a long-time member of The Utilis Matronae Club Incorporated, and President of the Tuskegee Alumni Chapter of Albany, Georgia.
Frieda transitioned peacefully on the morning of Saturday, April 15, 2023 in Atlanta, Georgia after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, brother, Charles S. Lindsey, Jr., and father-in-law, Joe H. Snead.
Frieda is survived by her husband, Joe Malone Snead, children (Jason Reid Lindsey and Dr. Monica Lindsey Ponder) and bonus children (Michelle Snead, Jauron Snead, and Tuwana Barthelemy). A doting grandmother, she leaves her legacy through Lindsey Ponder, Kennedi Snead, Derrin Cooper, Jauron Snead Jr., Donterrius Snead, Katoria Dukes, and Vernon Barthelemy. Also mourning her passing are her brother-in-law’s (Jeff Ross, Dexter Hooks, Warren Snead, Greg Maddox, and Herman (Marie) Snead), and nephews, Chad Ross and Alonzo Maddox, of whom she was very fond. Cherishing her memory are also a host of cousins, extended family and friends. Her 12-year old maltipoo and best pet friend, Diego Snead, remains inconsolable.
May we all be comforted by precious memories of our beloved.
