Savelli: Five Decades

Angelo Savelli’s artistic career spans five decades. From a very young age, he was encouraged to draw by his uncle, Alfonso Barone, a self-taught painter.

Born in 1911 and raised in the small town of Pizzo Calabro, Savelli was fortunate that his father supported his artistic aspirations by sending him to Rome where, in only two years, Savelli completed the degree which normally required four years to finish.

Subsequently, he gained entrance to Rome’s Accademia di Belle Arti where he learned the techniques of fresco and egg tempera painting. This traditional training served him well upon graduation from the Academy in 1936. He worked on fresco commissions immediately after leaving school.

In 1940, he was offered a teaching job at the very liceo at which he had been a student for years before. Returning to Rome, he continued painting in the traditional style that had evolved entirely apart from the innovations of international Modernism. After the trauma of the war subsided, Savelli was an active participant in the art scene in Rome. With Jarema, Severini, Fazzini, Guzzi, Montanarini and Tamburi, he was instrumental in founding the Art Club in 1945. While exposure to artists in other areas was still extremely limited, he began to understand intuitively that something was missing from his landscapes, cityscapes, and portraits. The “scuola romana“ which was reacting against the previous years of dominant official fascist art, was unable to establish a strong connection to the expressionist mode originated in Germany decades earlier. Of the well-known Italian art movements, futurism was the primary source of inspiration for Savelli, since most of the older, more established Italian artists returned to traditional styles.

Only Giorgio Morandi and his monastic splendor held serious interest for the young Savelli and his cronies. One painting from this period, Ponte Cavour (1946-47) indicates the artist’s desire to examine the vista in terms of interlocking planes, structured by an insistent linear containment. The use of angular planes in the sky is really the seed of some of Savelli’s most recent nonobjective work. At this time, he had never been to Paris or New York, hence he was only aware of the proto-cubism works of Picasso and Braque through reproductions, nor had he seen any of Lionel Feininger’s elegant paintings and woodcuts of architectural edifices done at the Bauhaus in the twenties. A major turning point in Savelli’s art occurred in 1948. He was awarded a grant to travel to Paris for one month. Instead, he managed to stretch his money to last nearly a year. The experience of the art he encountered in Paris was a revelation for this young Italian painter. As he recounts, “I realized that I needed to liberate myself from the divine Italian

tradition and find something to contribute tp the historical continuum“.

He began at what he identifies as “Line zero“, a tabula rasa, by employing only lines in all of his work. Inspired by the cathedral of Notre Dame, both its architecture and its stained glass windows, Savelli initiated a stunning metamorphosis. He understood more about his need to define a formal vocabulary of his own, one that could respect his particular sensibility, but would respond to the experiments in forms and techniques that he discovered everywhere in Paris. Returning to Rome after nine months, he found it increasingly difficult to accomodate his friends’ attitudes of dismay at his new methods and orientation. Costruzione (1950) is markedly different from his image based landscapes of only a two years earlier. The heavy black lines have become forms in their own right. The rhythmic intersections and syncopations are as charged and compressed as anything he had done to date. Savelli had achieved some measure of recognition at this time which extended over the next few years. He was included in the 1950 and 1952 Venice Biennale, a venue for international art that was a significant source of ideas and imagery for young Italian artists. Savelli’s feeling of isolation from his old friends who still could not comprehend the nature of his endeavor was mitigated only by the artist’s rigorous practice of yoga and meditation.

In 1953 another decisive event transpired. It was in this year that he met, and later married, Elizabeth Fisher. An American journalist then in Rome working for the Harald-Tribune, Fisher was responsible for helping Savelli come to the United States for following year. At forty-two, Savelli, originally from a tiny Calabrian seaport village, embarked for New York City. If Paris had been a revelation for him in 1948, New York in 1954 was an epiphany. “I saw a fire burning all over and I knew I had to be there“, Savelli recollects. The original plan of staying there for only six months had to be reassessed immediately.

After returning to Italy to make arrangements, the couple relocated to New York on a permanent basis. Of course this move, as wonderfully exciting as it was, was also cathartic for and devastating to Savelli. He knew few people, some artists, had been in Rome on the G.I. Bill, but for the most part, he was, in his own words, “a nothing“. Without his native language, he was frustrated by his inability to communicate with the kindred spirits he came to know. All of his previous achievements in Italy meant little in New York of the mid-50s and his confidence and sense of self were severely tested at this time. He was forced to begin all over again, as if his many solo exhibitions and catalogs were meaningless. He was forced to take his slides around to galleries and suffered the indignity of repeated rejection. He was fortunate to have known the Italian-American sculptor Phillip Pavia, and soon Savelli began attending the Friday evening 10 Street Art club meetings that became so instrumental in the artists’ and critics’ dialogues at that time. Later, one of his friends from the Club, Jack Tworkov, sublet him his studio at 10th Street and 4th Avenue. Across the hall was Franz Kline’s studio and Willem De Kooning’s was on the same block. Gradually, Savelli got to know and be known among his peers.

In 1955, he began a group of serigraphs which marked an on going technical discipline which significantly altered his approach to his future work.

Concurrent with these, he made collages. Over the next few years, he continued to work in a modified expressionist style, gesture clearly leading the charge of content. On the other hand, he became familiar with the paintings of Robert Motherwell, Ad Reinhardt and Barnett Newman. While he did not immediately emulate their forms, he instinctively admired their purity and was inexplicably drawn to their orientation. In 1956 Savelli produced White on White, a unique monochromatic serigraph. In form it was not very different from Dance 2, produced from the same plate. However, the choice of using white would later prove to be an important one. The following year, 1957, he made his first all white painting. He had finally broken through to something entirely original, coinciding with the end of the initial period of dislocation and alienation he had suffered for nearly six years.

Savelli’s first solo exhibition in New York occurred this same year. This consisted of prints and watercolors made the previous two years at the Chelsea Workshop. The next year, 1958, he had a solo show paintings at Leo Castelli’s gallery on 77th Street. Savelli, at the age of forty-six had clearly arrived in New York. In fact, the period following this is perhaps the most important in his career. His art evolved slowly and fluidly from this point. Fuga bianca (1959) marks the end of the rather dramatic interplay of sharply cut-out and spontaneously assembled planes in space. While the gestures have been restrained, leaving the more physical act of cutting to elicit emotional content, the rhythms, forever frozen and static, belie the immediate sense of the work.

1960 appears to have been the critical year. No longer does one find the collage method of sculptural relief. Rather gesture has been nearly totally abandoned in favor of primary forms and mover lavish application of paint sensuous to the eye as well as the touch. Lunare (1960) manifests these qualities of understatement, allowing only the cracking of the thick, was paint to evoke an earthiness and a grounding. Between the monochromatic white and the move toward reduced forms, Savelli was forging his mature vision. Significantly, these formal advances were parallel to some extrinsic ones. At this time he was invited to Positano to teach at an American art school and to participate in a printmaking workshop in Milan. While in residence, Savelli invited a lithographic process for making what he calls “relief prints“, an elaborate variation on the embossing technique. This enabled him to work with paper and presses and to extend the ideas he had been exploring in other media. That summer, Savelli was contacted by the University of Pennsylvania and asked to participate in the founding of the graduate program of fine arts in Philadelphia, in collaboration with his friend Piero Dorazio, who was chairman of the department. While maintaining his New York studio he committed himself to the job of teaching. There his paintings took on a decidedly metaphorical dimension that was never before so clearly present in his bas relief-paintings. Memory of Childhood (1961) moved from the free-hand circular motif of Lunare to the more rigidly geometric circularity of paint cup lids, immersed in white paint and contained in rectangular window-like compartments. Below, on the

primary plane of the canvas, a length of rope has been similarity dipped in white paint and allowed to assume its own disposition. While change played some role in the form takes, it is nevertheless an analogue for the visceral, intestinal anatomy. However, the line or rope carries still another aspect as well. The title of this work indicates something about the artist’s motive. Savelli’s nostalgia for his hometown near the sea brought with it a recollection of the ropes and line used by the fishermen and boatmen.

The ship, the vessel for voyage, is only able to take cargo and passengers when moored to the pier. So, too, are Savelli’s ropes ties to a stable and anchored place, indications of a desire to make contact while on his journey inward into himself as an artist. When Savelli discusses his use of white, he talks about white as being or representing interior. But it is not simply inside, as he explains, because there is darkness there. This white he has used exclusively for over twenty-five years refers to a light that comes out of obscurity, the acceptance of the shadows of the inner self and yields another kind of light; as the world enlightenment. His continued use of white, the rope, “windows“ or rectangles within rectangles, even the use of the frame itself, is best exemplified in a small work from 1962 entitled Little Nest. In the central area a short segment of rope is cropped and wedged into the negative rectangular niche. Adjacent to this vertical twisted rope are numerous thinner pieces of cut twine, woven somewhat randomly around an avoid hole in its center. Thus, emphatically “compressed into this tiny space is a stiff vertical element (the male aspect) next to the wilder, more open ‘nest’ image referred to in the title (the female aspect). The pathos of this work is immense despite its unpretentious scale. It appears to speak as much about the intimacy and challenge of heterosexual relationships, maintaining the “nest“ as it were, as it does about motion (spiral and centrifugal) and unity of form compared to its components of construction. All of this is contained in a darter interior space which is set off against the pristine white plane of the stretched canvas which is itself set into a show box frame, all of which is painted white. Clearly there are levels of whiteness implied, just as there are infinite levels of meaning that can be ascribed to such a visual and tactile statement. Savelli moved toward purification as a goal once he had established the elements of his visual language. By 1964, he began to refine the use of the ‘rope as an element which cuts the plane of the canvas’. In Memory of Denise, Cintyia, Carol, Addie Mae of Alabama (1964) is an example of how he employs an “x“ like form of two intersecting ropes knotted at the point of convergence. What is important about this particular piece is that there is a noticeable geometry visible in it, the resulting triangles to later become a recurrent motif for Savelli. This same year Savelli began making what would later be titled Dante’s Inferno (1964-68), a sculptural group of more than twenty-five aluminum vertical rope pieces, each baked white and framed in a tall white box proportionately scaled to the length of the rope contained within it. These appear to be figures in coffins and thus the title could be read or interpreted in some way. However, it turns out that this piece was named by Barnett Newman who saw the piece in progress in Savelli’s Bowery studio. Even Savelli himself did not claim to

fully understand what Newman had in mind with this title. On the other hand, he was so honored that Newman was inspired to name the work that he elected to use it, owing to the whimsical and humorous interpretation he understood from it. More important than this anecdote is the fact that Savelli, for years a painter who had manifested some sculptural impulses which took the form of reliefs, relief prints, use of real objects (e.g. rope, can lids, etc.) in collages, cutting and folding materials, had now finally moved into making free standing sculptures. 1964 is an important date for Savelli as well. For it was that year that marked his success at the Venice Biennale, a triumph: Savelli was awarded a major prize for his prints which appeared in his solo exhibition at the Italian pavilion.

Savelli had worked in series since the time of his serigraphs. Now repetition was evident in his relief prints as well. In addition to the continued use of the rope motif in all of his work as well as the omnipresent white, the artist focused on circular and polygonal motifs. The four-sided shapes are cut through the paper, creating “windows“ seen in varying perspectives.

Hence, the whiteness of the plane of the paper can be construed to be both continuous and in spatial flux. Savelli therefore creates a feeling of time and distance using a traditional atmospheric perspective and diminution in Above and Lotus, both made in 1965. One need only consider the character of movement that appeared in the paintings and serigraphs of ten years earlier to fully appreciate the nature of the shift in the artist’s sensibility.

Whereas there was a gestural stridency flooding the previous work, now a more gentle, timbre is apparent in the gradual assertion of the geometric purity. More meditative and with greater universal intensity, Savelli’s relief prints of this period map out a spiritual realm that his sculptural work was, only beginning to explore. It is clear at this point that he was freer with the prints to delve into the mental domain and that the physical reality of the sculpture had not yet resolved itself to the same degree. By 1966, however, Savelli had discovered a manner by which to incorporate some of his more mystical experiences. He created his first meditation room in his Bowery studio and called it Paradise, later evolving it into the first of two such works. Paradise I (1966) was a five-sided environment which could only be entered into visually and physically by the viewer. Each wall repeated the same pattern, a vertical diptych inserted into a three-sided, U shaped design.

The entire space was white. Above, in the ceiling, this same configuration was a real window admitting translucent, natural light. Below, on the floor, the shape contained plexiglass and functioned as a reflection pool.

The following year, Savelli made a model for Paradise II, in some ways as even more ambitious project. Here the environment became a large white inverted pyramid with triangular shapes cut out of each side, again the top plane open to allow light to filter down. The apex of this inverted pyramid hovered above the square floor piece which contained a plexiglass triangle which reflected the pyramid.

This period of actively of speculation into projects that were rooms sized and demanded particular situation so dominated Savelli’s energy that he ceased his printmaking. Instead, he began a series of wall sculptures

elaborating the notion of Dante’s Inferno. Instead of free-standing vertical rope segments contained in boxes, the artist commenced with a group of attenuated trapezoids into which were imbedded channels containing a vertical, almost plumbing rope. Virgilius (1966) is an example of one of the finest of these pieces. This same year Savelli was included in the prestigious Whitney Museum of American Art’s Annual Invitation Exhibition. This honor was repeated again in 1967. Beginning in 1968, Savelli originated a new series of works which were decidedly more painterly than sculptural. Luce Una (1968-71) is a ten foot high canvas which, at first glance, appears bisected diagonally by a broken line going from the lower left corner and traversing the picture plane toward the upper right corner. Upon closer inspection, it turns out that this broken line is actually a piece of thin cord sewn into the canvas, alternately surfacing and disappearing behind the canvas. Again the rope has divided the rectangle into a definite pair of triangles. Line has asserted itself in a real manner while adhering to its purely graphic properties. This particular work, the progenitor of a long series of variations on this theme, was dedicated to Marcel Duchamp (whom Savelli calls “Le Grand Respirateur“) who died earlier this same year. Likewise, a later work in the series, Rivelazione (1971), was made in homage to Savelli’s spiritual brother Barnett Newman who died in 1970. In 1969, Savelli returned to the notion of creating meditative environments. In fact, part of this had to do with the fact that he was given a major opportunity to realize Paradise II at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washinghton, D.C., as part of their Biannual Exhibition of American Art. After mounting this piece, the artist became more deeply involved with the triangle and pyramid forms than ever before.

The convergence of universal energy that could be visually embodied in this geometric form fueled several future works. One was a model for a large scale project entitled Mithra (1969) which consisted of sixteen triangles contained within triangles again contained inside squares. These were set on a slab at equal distance and each was a permutation on the possibilities of the combination of these three forms in relationship. This and other designs for large scale environmental projects such as Varuna (1969), calling for a series of triangular and polygonal pools in close proximity to one another, and Forum (1970-74), a more architectural scheme which the artist planned to be a site for collaborations with choreographers and musicians, were never executed on scale. The early seventies witnessed a return to making relief prints as well as a desire to create installations for gallery spaces that were accessible and not remote to the viewer’s physical involvement.

Illumine One (1970-72) utilized the already familiar inverted triangular motif and the trapezoidal forms placed into a triangular pattern converging at the juncture of floor and wall at the precise point of the triangle’s apex. Here again the artist invokes perspectival illusion in order to articulate abstract order in real space. This work was realized in Savelli’s first museum solo exhibition in the United States at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, New York. As is so often the case with an artist, following a major exhibition is a period of prolonged reassessment. The shock of seeing one’s work presented in a comprehensive or complete way frequently instills in an artist a need to

overturn what already exists. For Savelli this was certainly the case, as is evident in Irregular Diamond (1973), a work which represents a change from the carefully disciplined, geometric work of the previous decade. Even the title suggests the significance of the shift. Not only is the form “irregular“, but the canvas is unstretched, releasing the tension of the picture plane that figured so prominently in the earlier paintings. Moreover, the edges are frayed, threads left ragged to deny the fastidiousness of craftsmanship visible in all of the previous work. The carefully designed channel for the rope visible earlier is now loosely defined seam between two pieces of canvas stapled together. In effect, it appears that the rope might have been taken up after the while paint had been applied, leaving the raw canvas exposed beneath. The creamy white paint reminds one of the dripped and poured substances of the work before Savelli’s notions of geometric purity took hold. For the next several years, Savelli was able to work back and forth between these two styles. During this period, he was invited to teach at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and the following year at the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. At this time he was conceiving and executing Wall to Wall (1975-76), a monumental piece for a solo exhibition at the Zoller Gallery at Pennsylvania State University, where he also taught in the art department. This work was the culmination of years of concern with objectifying line into form in real space. No longer was Savelli’s interest restricted to traditional modes of painting or sculpture, but they now began to encompass existing architecture and utilized it integral to his work.

Balancing with this large scale work were some of his most sensuous and intimate paintings. Diagonal Waves (1976) is a subtle painterly display of nostalgia for the rope that had disappeared from his work (except for some relief prints) about five years before this. Now, in place of the diagonal rope, a thickly poured surface of white paint reveals traces of a diagonal line, like the wake of a boat which passed just moments before. There is a strong pathos to this square canvas which is a rare for its understatement. Other paintings were more formal in thrust, such as On the Quality of the Surface (IX) done in 1977. Here, still on a small scale (22x18 inches), Savelli reintroduced his touch, though not in an emphatically gestural manner as he had once so strongly done. The surface is now a record of how the acrylic white paint has been brushed without the heroics of action painting, but now with a subtle restraint and minimal technique. Beginning in 1977, Savelli accepted a position as Visiting Artist at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he went each winter term for the following five years. There, in the printmaking studio, he produced forty relief prints while also teaching advanced students. This year was an important one for Savelli in New York as well. In the spring of 1978 he opened three solo-exhibitions uptown at Parsons-Dreyfuss Gallery on 57th Street and downtown at Max Hutchinson Gallery as well as the adjacent Sculpture Now space. This was Savelli’s first solo exhibition in New York City since the one at D’Arcy Gallery in 1963.

While many of the New York art community had known or knew of Savelli and his devotion to white, few, if any, had been able to see a body of his work. The highlight of these shows was the sculpture. Upstairs there were

three architectural pieces, Standing Square, Steps Stepping up the Wall and Open Space with Four Columns. Down in the basement was perhaps one of the most surprising and liberating works Savelli had created for many years, possibly even his greatest achievement. Three with 84 Tree Trunks was a full scale installation. The trunks, approximately three feet long and painted with Savelli’s characteristic white, were arrayed in rows. At one end of the space was a large tree branch, painted in the same white as everything else - the floors, the piers, and the ceiling. Stepping off the elevator was like walking into a cloud or moving into the artist’s vision itself. After this exhaustive effort and accomplishment, Savelli continued to create unstretched paintings on cut and rejoined segments of canvas as he had begun in 1973. By 1978-79, a geometric aspect had resurfaced in his work, evident in On the Cutting of the Plane (Second Version). While there is still a softened look to the work, more care for how the work was done, the actual cutting and the application of the white paint, is visible. Over the next few years, in fact up through the present, Savelli has returned to a more fastidious style and manner of handling the various elements in his work.

Again, the ubiquitous triangle has reemerged in the most recent paintings on cellotex.

In 1980, Savelli was selected to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship which enabled him to spend part of his time in Europe while he mounted several solo shows in Milan, Zurich and Rome. He continued to produce relief prints while teaching in Texas the remainder of the year. The following year, his seventieth, he completed a commission he had undertaken in 1979 for a large scale steel sculpture which was installed outside of The New Art Center in New Haven, Connecticut. Aglaophon (1979-81) stands eleven by fifteen by eight feet and is a gleaming white interlock of three planar components. It will remain as the most enduring and ambitious of Savelli’s works to date.

There have been other honors, among them an award bestowed upon him from the National Academy of Arts and Letters in the United States last year. Savelli continues to actively probe the world of white geometric forms which resonate with singular allure and mystery. His accomplishment, his oeuvre is testimony to a gentle spirit, a determined search, and an unyielding will to create universal statements about the human light within.

Angelo Savelli, who came to this country from Italy over a decade ago, began creating paintings which by 1957 took on the simple but profound minimalization of surface which characterized much of the most advanced art of the period. These paintings were completely white on white and contained a hint of the harsh abstract expressionist style which preceded them only through the use of elements of collage. During this period Savelli pioneered in the development of a process of white relief litography for which he is best known. In the next few years he began investigating the shaped canvas – before it became an accepted convention – and introduced pieces af rope as basic form. Nevertheless, his work looked Italian rather than American to those who were acquainted with it, a quality which, unfortunately, contributed to his difficulty in gaining acceptance at the level which his remarkable achievement deserved. In 1964, Savelli began a series of white, box-like sculptures which contained, as the central image, a taut, heavy rope, also painted white. These were the first of a series af similar works of varying sizes which came to be titled Dante’s Inferno. This title was suggested to the artist by Barnett Newman. Each work can be seen to symbolize and is named after (each of) the characters in Dante’s imaginary reality. There is the quality and content of a surrealist landscape in Savelli’s white box which the rope adds an element of reality, providing each space whit a concrete symbol which, like the symbolic ladder, has profound metaphysical meaning. Following the Inferno series, Savelli began making rectangular and triangular rooms which he titled Paradise. These are white spaces into which the viewer cannot enter and which contain white paintings. Their symmetry gives them a quality of serenity, and they appear to be permeated by etherealized light. These works are meant to be contemplated, that is, they open the way to achieving a metaphysical experience and a state of happiness, consistent, with Dante’s purpose in the Divine Comedy.

These rooms not only evolve out of the smaller boxes of the Inferno, but also have a source in Savelli’s profound recollection of the small grotto altar in Italy which was created by his grandfather and his uncle.

In all of the works of this period, one is aware of the presence of a vibrating form and light-space which, in the artist’s words, is so constituted “as to blend into the viewer’s aura in order to reach an aesthetic, ideal unity“. These remarkable works will be exhibited in Washington at the Henri Gallery and at The Corcoran Gallery of Art. They prove to be a contemporary interpretation of a universal theme depicting the process from damnation to heavenly bliss

by means of new symbols and by the artist’s extraordinary use of the effect of light and geometrical space.

The Savelli Case

The master Angelo Savelli, who is now seventy but looks years younger, returns to Italy after many years, with a comprehensive retrospective of his works in a public gallery. In the year 1940s and 1950s, Savelli was one of the protagonists of modern painting in Rome. He was well-known as Guttuso, and held in much higher esteem than the latter by young artists like me or older ones such as Severini. From 1954 Savelli lived in New York, as at home in Soho and Harlem, as he was in Via Margutta in Rome. I remember his studio in the heart of Harlem; it was completely white and filled with his white paintings. There he nourished the many black kids from the surrounding neighbourhood, teaching them about the qualities (pureness and virtue) and profound meanings of white, the king of colors, the one that best sublimes material, covering it with a light that is pure spirit, total harmony. Savelli became a “myth“ wherever his feet passed: in Via Margutta, in New York, in Philadelphia… His generosity, his loyalty, his clarity, his honest intentions and behavior bordered on an ingenuousness that was most unexpected. But his legendary candour did not stem from shyness or incompetence; it was something he worked to achieve, a freedom he earned through his constant integrity. In fact, Savelli is the artist least corrupted by culture, by politics, by the market – by life in other words – that I know.

His dedication and his faithfulness to art as a means of communication and of liberating the human soul, are absolute. On both sides of the Atlantic he has continued to make art his own way, without compromises, without protectors, indeed refusing them right from the start, as soon as he became aware of the benefits they would reap for him. In fact, Savelli is famous for turning down a contract with Leo Castelli in 1957, because he didn’t like the aesthetic approach of his gallery, which then became the most famous of them all. On other occasions, I have seen Savelli deal with overwhelming difficulties and extremely tough periods, simply to keep his identity intact and unencumbered. In fact, the Romantic conflict between Art and Life doesn’t exist for him because the latter is identified with his experience as a painter, sculptor and inventor, with his creativity and his techniques, with the rigour of his choises. Savelli’s incorruptibility in a period of intense activity and widespread corruption makes him an example that could be useful to many, not only through the coherent development of his work, but also his experience of life. That’s why Savelli is now surrounded by the affection and respect of young friends in particular, to whom he has devoted years, indeed decades, as a teacher and to whom he has passed on his irremovable faith in art as a moral, and not only aesthetic, value. In the

United States, Savelli must have trained art at least a thousand painters and sculptors all told, especially in Philadelphia, where between 1960 and 1970 the two of us organized, at the University of Pennsylvania, what was considered the best art school in the country. The above observations will help the visitor to Savelli’s exhibition to better understand the “Savelli case“, as well as his work and his personality, which have, in fact, been forgotten in Italy for decades. Savelli is known in New York by an artistic and intellectual elite. Painters like Barnett Newman, Reinhardt and Motherwell have always held him in high esteem even though he has never been at the centre of the whirl of artistic fashions of the past years. A “transatlantic“ hero, Savelli – who still sees himself as Italian – has become somewhat suspended between Rome and New York, and completely and unjustly forgotten in Italy. For instance, he has never been invited to the Rome Quadrennial or the Venice Biennal, at least not in the last twenty years, even though he advocated and produced a certain kind of avant-garde art, between “conceptual“ and “minimal“, before Paolini and Merz, for example. The “Savelli case“ can thus be described as a case of extreme autonomy from fashionable culture, so extreme that it practically borders on solitude. But it is precisely the desire to attain a beatific state of contemplation “in solitude“ that is one of the themes central to the master’s art. As it his desire to represent a world that is barely perceptible to our dulled senses, which consists in forms, spaces, lights and shadows that exist outside the limits of gravity, space and real time, roving freely between a consciousness of the profound and the imagination. Savelli’s white is the synthesis of all colors, as in Maxwell’s Wheel, and at the same time the state of rest and the beginning of the rainbow, at the limit of the “threshold of perception“. With this symbol the artist confirms the existence of art as an “immanent“ and “permanent“ value that pertains to the noble life of the spirit rather than to the ephemeral or popular and populist stories in the news. Above revolutions, regressions, illusions and ambitions; above alliances, Dadaism, Cubism, Expressionism, Minimalism and Conceptualism, Savelli’s oeuvre remains valid because it is a case in point, suspended between two continents, like a Pole Star.

Biography

1911. Born in Pizzo Calabro (Catanzaro) on 30 October, Angelo Savelli is encouraged to draw from an early age by his uncle Alfonso Barone a selftaught painter.

1924-29. Attends the Filangeri high school in Vibo Valentia (Catanzaro).

1930-35. Moves to Rome with the encouragement and financial support of his father, a pharmacist, and attends courses at art school (the Scuola Libera di Nudo and the Liceo Artistico) before enrolling at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he studies the techniques of fresco and tempera grassa under Ferruccio Ferrazzi. Awarded the Ministry of Corporations Prize in 1935 as well as the Mattia Preti Prize at the Mostra Sindacale in Reggio Calabria and the Balestra Prize of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome.

1936. Graduates in 1936 and begins to receive commissions for frescoes.

Decorates the chapel of Villa Boimond at Sora (Frosinone) with subjects from the Gospel and receives a prize at the Esposizione regionale calabrese.

1937. Military service.

1938. Appointed to teach painting at the Rome Academy by the director Mario Rivosecchi together with Renato Guttuso, Ziveri, Mazzacurati, Capogrossi and other artists. Establishes a relationship of mutual seem and lasting friendship with Guttuso, who writes an article on his work in Beltempo - Almanacco delle lettere e delle arti (Edizioni della Cometa), 1942.

1941. Hold his first solo show, with a presentation by Guglielmo Petroni, at the Galleria Roma, Rome, in December. Awarded one of the four additional prizes in the Bergamo Prize competition.

1943. Called up for mobilization in May. 1944. Founds the Art Club association together with Severini, Prampolini, Fazzini, Jerema and Guzzi, and takes part in shows held in Cairo, Alexandria and Buenos aires. Begins the practice of yoga and meditation. White starts to play an important part in some landscapes and religious works.

1945-48. Establishes friendships with Piero Dorazio, Salvatore Scarpitta,

Giulio Turcato and Lucio Manisco. Exhibits work in Reggio Calabria (Biennial, 1945), Milan, Venice, Trieste and Rome. Awarded the Colli Euganei prize at Abano in 1947 and leaves in 1948 for Paris, where he begins what he calls the zero line and tabula rasa, a series of works consisting solely of lines and basic geometric structures. Works very hard in Paris and produces a large number of abstract, geometric drawings based on the stained-glass windows of Notre-Dame and corners of the city. Returns to Rome in the autumn of 1948 and continues to work on abstract art in his studio at no. 49 Via Margutta. Contact with Franco Gentilini, Luigi Montanarini, Nino Franchina, Afro Basaldella, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Ettore Colla and Alberto Burri is maintained by letter also after his departure for the United States in 1954.

1949. Takes part in the exhibitions Romische Maler (Salzburg, Kunstlerhaus) and Italische Malerei der Gegenwart (Vienna, Akademie der Bildenden Kunste), the latter jointly organized by the Italian Institute of Culture in Vienna and the Austrian Art Club.

1950. Takes part in the 25th Venice Biennial and the Biennial of Reggio Calabria. Awarded first prize in the Città di Reggio Calabria competition.

1951-53. Takes part in Art Club exhibitions in Stockholm, Helsinki, Gothenburg, Oslo and Copenhagen in 1951, the 26th Venice Biennial in 1952, and the exhibition Arte Astratta Italia-Francia at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, Rome, in 1953. Marriage in the same year to Elisabeth Harold, an American journalist met in Rome.

1954. Exhibits work at the Palazzo del Governo in Catanzaro. Leaves with his wife for a trip to New York, where he is impressed by the nascent American Art of abstract Expressionism and decides to settle on a permanent basis.

The early months in New York see contact and friendships with Abstract Expressionists like Herbert Ferber, Barnett Newman, Robert Motherwell, Philip Pavia, Ad Reinhardt, Theodoros Stamos and Jack Tworkow. Takes over the latter's studio between 10th Street and 4th Avenue, opposite those of Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning. Meets Leo Castelli and the artist Enrico Donati.

1955-59. In 1955, during work on a series of silkscreen prints on 35 different subjects at the Artist Workshop in New York, experiments with different types of parer and ink lead to the creation of the all-white print White 5, presenting signs and linear movements but completely white. First solo show in New York, head at The Contemporaries gallery in 1955, with 12 silkscreen prints and 12 gouaches. Takes part in a group exhibition at the Leo Castelli Gallery in 1957 and holds a solo show there the following year. Fire Dance, his first completely white painting, is produced in 1957, after which colors are eliminated from his palette and white becomes the medium of his spiritual abstract art for nearly four decades. Awarded a prize at the Battistoni International Competition of Industrial Design in 1958. Savelli

presents 19 white works for the first time in a solo show at the tweed Gallery of the Department of Art of University of Minnesota, Duluth, in November 1959, and presents some white reliefs by invitation the same year at the Rome Quadrennial. Teaches at the New School for Social Research, New York, from 1959 to 1964.

1960-63. Appointed director of the Positano Art Workshop (Positano, Salerno)in 1960 and invited in the autumn of the same year together with Piero Dorazio by the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, to reorganize programs and studies for the Department of Fine Arts. Teaches at this university for over a decade and resides in spring town, Pennsylvania, while maintaining a studio in New York. Publishes a portfolio of ten white on white lithographs with an introduction by C.G. Argan (Stamperia Il Torchio, Milan) in 1961.

It is around 1961, after the use of sand and cork, that rope appears as a compositional element in his paintings. Receives the Lissone Prize in 1961 and publishes the artist’s book Ten Poems by Ten American Poets with ten lithographic reliefs (Romero editore, Rome) in 1963.

1964. Exhibits lithographs and lithographic reliefs at the 32nd Venice Biennial and is awarded the Grand Prize for Graphic Art. 1965-69. Produces the installation Dante’s Inferno, consisting of 25 white columns of different sizes each containing a coiled white rope. Teaching appointment at Columbia University, New York, in 1966.

Produces a model for Paradise II in 1967 consisting of a white pyramid turned upside-down with triangles cut into each side. Work exhibited in 1969 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Henri Gallery in Washington, DC as well as Peale House in Philadelphia.

1970-75. This period sees the first white canvases with no stretcher attached directly to the wall. Exhibits work at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York, in 1972 and teaches at the University of Wisconsin in Menomonie.

Exhibits works at the Tweed Museum Art, University of Minnesota, Duluth, in 1973 and produces the sculpture Empedocles for the Lincoln Center in Syracuse, New York. Teaches at Cornell University, New York, in 1974 and exhibits work at the Zoller Gallery of Pennsylvania State University in 1975.

1976-81. Teaches at Penn State University, University Park, Pennsylvania.

Appointed to teach in 1977 at the Texas University, Arlington, where he remains for the winter semesters of the next four years. Produces a series of 40 white on white relief prints. Inaugurates three solo shows at the same time in 1978 at the Max Hutchinson Gallery, Sculpture Now Inc. and Parsons-Dreyfuss, all in New York. The award of a Guggenheim fellowship for 1979-80 enables him to spend a long period in Europe, where he holds three solo shows in Milan, Rome and Zurich in 1981. 1983. Awarded the prize of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York, on the recommendation of Robert Motherwell.

1984. Meeting in New York with Luigi Sansone, appointed by Mercedes Garberi, director of the Milan Art Collections, to organize an exhibition of white on white works at the Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, Milan. This event marks a major turning point in Savelli’s artistic career, as his works now begin to feature in numerous public exhibitions in Italy and the United States.

1985-90. Solo shows in Arona (Pinacoteca Comunale, 1986), Wichita, Kansas (Wichita Art Museum, 1988), Allentown, Pennsylvania (Allentown Art Museum, 1990) and Mantua (Casa del Mantegna, 1990).

Publication of the artist’s book Selvaggina with five relief prints and ten poems by Luigi Ballerini (Vanni Scheiwiller, Milan 1986). Show at the Murat Castle in Pizzo Calabro, his hometown, and the award of a second gold medal for artistic merit in 1986. Reconstruction of the installation Inficosmo, created the previous year for the Spazio D’Ars in Milan, at the Museum of Gibellina in 1987.

Moves in 1988 from Grand Street to 257 Water Street near the Brooklyn Bridge, his last home and studio in New York. The New York branch of the RAI corporation makes and broadcasts a documentary on Savelli’s life and work in 1988.

1991-95. Exhibits works at the Galleria d’Arte Niccoli, Parma, in 1991.

Inauguration of the Centro d’Arte Contemporanea Angelo Savelli in 1991. Travels to Japan for a show at the Kodama Gallery, Osaka, in September 1992.

Creates a room in the L’Atelier sul Mare hotel at Castel de Tusa, Messina, in 1994.
