FROM GIRLS TO YOUNG WOMEN It’s a time of growth, development and excitement as our girls form their identities, and become more courageous and curious. It’s also a time of transition – from primary to secondary education to preparing to move beyond our campus as independent young women. MLC’s professional and expert staff mentor our girls every step of the way to guide, nurture and encourage them to become the women they aspire to be. We present to all of our girls a rigorous academic curriculum and a plethora of opportunities to develop skills for life. Whether it be extension for those girls who are ready to take on

greater challenges, or individual learning plans for those needing additional assistance, our academic culture makes thinking and learning processes visible. We prioritise the right of every girl to learn something new every day. At MLC, we value the individual gifts and character of our learners. Whether she chooses to complete the West Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) curriculum or the Vocational Education and Training (VET) programme, we also embrace diversity in teaching methods and resources, and recognises the importance of learning across, local, national and international contexts to meet each learner’s individual needs.

LEADING LEARNERS The Walton Leadership Institute enables our girls to imagine, motivate and lead change. Its unique curriculum enhances leadership development as part of a holistic education. Girls have access to a wide range of opportunities, including the co-curricular domain, which engage them to inspire and motivate others to work towards a common purpose. Girls transition from imagining to exercising their leadership in authentic contexts for decision making and effecting change. This occurs in a mentoring environment that encourages them to reflect on their experiences as they refine the leadership skills they will carry into adulthood. The Walton Leadership Institute focuses on development of the character strengths, understandings and skills that contribute to growing every girl’s capacity to be an effective leader. The field of leadership has much to offer in terms of equipping our girls to make positive contributions to their communities, as well as enhancing their preparation for their future endeavours. Graduates of the Walton Leadership Institute will be recognised for their exemplary communication and decision making, for providing service to others and for competencies required for effective international relations.

OUR FUTURE LEADERS ARE GOING PLACES

We know that there is as much to be learnt outside of the classroom as there is inside of it. So an important aspect to our holistic learning includes co-curricular activities that complement the rigorous academic curriculum, and opportunities to learn and grow beyond our shores. From an early age, MLC students actively serve the community, whether that be our local, national or international community, by giving of themselves; this is in keeping with our Values as a College of the Uniting Church in Australia. A highlight of our Service Learning is our international programme. Students look forward to taking part in our service experiences including

trips to Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand. Our co-curricular activities encourage the exploration of the amazing worlds of visual art, music, theatre, and sport in a safe and challenging environment. We take our girls on Drama, Music, History and Sporting tours and trips that give students the opportunity to experience excellence in their chosen field, both nationally and internationally. Through co-curricular activities, students develop a sense of service to one another and to the world around them. They learn how to give back to the world while developing an appreciation for the gift of their wonderful education.

A family environment where your daughter can have privacy and room to grow, and importantly, where she can have fun and feel at home.

WELCOME HOME What makes boarding here so special is a sense of belonging. From the moment your daughter steps into our Boarding House, she becomes a part of a special community where she will make lifelong friends. MLC Boarding offers a safe and supportive environment where your daughter can have privacy and room to grow, and importantly, where she can have fun and feel at home. The historic exterior of our boutique Boarding House disguises our modern facilities within, including our study labs, kitchens, theatre rooms, family rooms and comfortable bedrooms. There are nooks throughout where students can find the space to relax on their own or with friends. At weekends, girls can spend their spare time using our wonderful facilities, including our gym, swimming pool and tennis courts, or just lazing in our gardens overlooking the Swan River. Weekend activities, such as trips to the movies, bowling, beach excursions and social events are organised, giving boarders plenty to do and time to explore.

STUDENT WELLBEING We take an active role in the wellbeing and health of all of our girls. Our researchbased Wellbeing Curriculum aims to instil a buoyant student culture and a real sense of collegiality through underpinning themes based around positive psychology. This curriculum focuses on building self-esteem and developing skills to help girls cope with the challenges that are presented to them in school and beyond. At its heart are our College Values that define our relationships and our commitment to an integrated, whole-school approach to pastoral care. The Wellbeing Curriculum’s flexibility ensures that we can respond to challenges as they arise. Our teachers and staff are the key nurturers for our girls and young women. In Years 7 to 12, mentors acknowledge each student’s uniqueness: their special gifts and talents, their goals for the future, and their individual circumstances. Supporting them in the delivery of the Wellbeing Curriculum are our specialist school psychologists, health education teachers, nurses and our Chaplain. From Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6 the one-onone relationship between our class teachers and their girls is central to our Wellbeing Curriculum. Small class sizes ensure that our teachers can build upon those relationships and open clear channels of communication.

MORE THAN A SCHOOL

When your daughter joins MLC, your whole family becomes a part of our vibrant and inclusive community. There are many opportunities for our community to be engaged with each other and the College. Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their daughter’s learning adventures, and in life at the College. Many give their time and talent through volunteering, or by being a part of one of our community support groups, assisting the College in building a caring and supportive environment. Our key support groups include the Parents of MLC, Friends of MLC and the MLC Rowing Club. The MLC Foundation actively fosters a strong culture of philanthropy to build upon the generosity of previous generations, to provide scholarship opportunities and secure the College’s financial future. Upon graduation, each of our girls automatically becomes a life member of the Collegians’ Association, which offers a way to maintain a lifelong relationship with the connected MLC community.
