MLC Day at Worship Conference The WELS National Conference on Worship, Music, and the Arts—the largest Lutheran Worship Conference in the western hemisphere—was held July 19-22 at Gustavus Adolphus College-St. Peter MN. On the 21st, 1000+ conference-goers enjoyed “MLC Day,” which included sectionals, tours, concerts, and worship in the Chapel of the Christ. “It was a special joy and privilege to introduce so many people to MLC for the first time,” said Bryan Gerlach, director for the WELS Commission on Worship. “MLC Day gave us superior weather, a superior chapel, and a superior pipe organ! Staff and faculty offered superb hospitality.” Several MLC faculty members offered their gifts at the conference: Instructor Bethel Balge (piano recitalist and accompanist), Pastor John Boeder WLS ’90 (presiding minister), Dr. Kermit Moldenhauer ’71 (co-conductor for opening concert and composer of a melody and concertato for “Jesus, My Joy,” a new translation of “Jesus, Priceless Treasure” by MLC board member Pastor Michael Schultz), Instructor Brent Nolte ’94 (organist), Professor John Nolte ’68 (Festival Choir member), Dr. Wayne Wagner ’72
(lecturer/recitalist for “The Chapel of the Christ Organ” and facilitator of open console sessions), Professor Kurt Wittmershaus ’88 (vocal quartet and contemporary choir member, and panelist for a discussion of the arts in worship), and Professor Miles Wurster (violist in Hymn Festival Orchestra). “The success of the day at MLC was a great testimony to everything that is a part of the WELS College of Ministry— its students, faculty, staff, facilities, and mission,” said Dr. Wayne Wagner ’72. “I heard many comments from people who were on campus for the first time ever, or the first time in many years, that expressed great appreciation for the treasure the WELS has in Martin Luther College. And worship in the Chapel of the Christ was truly a highlight.” For photos, go to gallery.mlc-wels.edu > 2011-2012 > Summer Events > National Worship Conference. ● To watch worship services, go to mlc-wels.edu and click on MLCTV on the top toolbar.
