Theoretical Reference on the issue of Context to:

Vittorio Gregotti - “Architecture must reflect the landscape as an ensemble and must reveal the essence of the landscape.”

Aldo Rossi - Architecture ensures the continuation of the historic city and thus guarantees the continuity and growth of a city.

The thesis aims to re-interpret the ruin of 21st Century Hong Kong by analogical thinking allowing for both memory and history; mixes autobiography and civic history, individual and collective. History has to be constantly rewritten according to the needs and anticipations of new generations. In the museum such writing takes the form of new additions and the remodelling of former parts. A

The thesis focuses on the issue of ruin. In the Renaissance, ruin equates the antiquity of monuments, tombs, columns, which is described by fragmented scripted text. The idea of ruin evolve over time. Ruin in the 21st Century is the result of rapid urban transformations. Ruin is associated with monument that dialectically related to the city’s growth being the primary elements in the city which are persistent and characteristic urban artefacts.

In the short history of modern development in Hong Kong, human impacts can be traced in the coastal reclamation in shorelines and development of highways, shaping the barren rock.

Since the 21st Century’s ruin is closer to our age of living, it evokes emotions to the loss of prosperity and security of the recent years. If the progress of the 20th century becomes the ruin of the 21st century, how will one look at the problem in this era from the lens of the 22nd century? Through ruin, one can see the progress. How can architecture regain its power through the mistake it has made as opposed to the glory it has had?

City is a pseudo-concept according to Henri Lefebvre the urban society constitutes itself on ruins of the city1.

The evolution of the city on one hand involves the expansion of the relative space in terms of the physical expansion or increase in connectivity.

On the other hand it is the evolution of the ontological reality of urban environment. City can be seen as a megastructure.

Coordinates of Coastlines’ Fragments: 61 Tuen Mun Road – Hong Kong first high speed road and the first expressway, constructed along the winding coastline and the steep terrain requires viaducts, culverts and cuttings. Phase 1 of the road was built in 1977.

44 Kwai Tsing High Way – Highway situated between the Kwai Tsing Container Terminals and the Public Housing in Lai King. The Lai King Hill was heavily densed with retaining walls for the artificial steep terrain housing the estates.

66 Anderson Road Quarry - Stone is the only commodity in which Hong Kong is still self-sufficient, and quarrying was a major early industry. The granite extracted from the quarries in East Kowloon, Stonecutter’s Island, Quarry Bay and from the Kowloon hills.

Modern quarries can also be seen.

Anderson Road highly visible above Kwun Tong, Lamma opposite So Kwu Wan, Shek O just before you start to descend into that place. Less high profile is Lam Tei Quarry NE of Tuen Mun. However, under a plan formulated in 1989 this major quarry will be the last one in Hong Kong to close in 2015.

31 Kings George Park - Plans for the parks were first announced soon after the king’s death in 1936. “At the present time of economic depression it is unlikely that sufficient money could be raised in this Colony for the purchase of large areas for playing fields.

Two sites were identified for the future parks: a rocky patch of barren land at the corner of Jordan Road and Canton Road, across from the Jordan Road Ferry Pier, and the site of the Government Civil Hospital on Hospital Road, which was soon to be replaced by the new Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam. The Sai Ying Pun park never got the Chinese architecture it was promised, but is perfectly pleasant even without it. Epic banyan trees hang over the historic stone retaining walls flanking the green space, which were retained from the gardens of the hospital that once stood here. And the soccer pitch is always busy.

00 Boundary Stones - "boundary stone" means a boundary mark made from white granite, or concrete slab established by the Survey and Mapping Office of Lands Department to demarcate a parcel of land.

When Hong Kong Island was occupied by Britain in January 1841, there were 16 villages. In 1843, Britain created the city of Victoria covering Sheung Wan, Central and Wan Chai. The government later erected boundary stones on Hong Kong Island marking the city limits. Each stone bears the inscription 'City Boundary 1903'.

Scenography of the Future of the City It is a personal experience in walking through a set of scenes constructed for understanding the exist urban space.

Collective Narrative and the Individual Houses

Re-creation of the lost Streetscape and Proximity to the Sea

There will be different narrative box in the territory specific to the chapters of Hong Kong. This box is the most related to the history in 1860-1920.

The promenade along the first generation of Praya wall was reclaimed, leaving only the “sea-side” rail of trams.

Perspective and Analogical Representation The stage of the narrative story of the “glorious” arrival and becoming of Hong Kong as part of the larger puzzles that review on the current development of the city.

Archiving the City as objects once existed We create systems to tell the story of our needs and desires, our hopes and follies, our visions for the future. If we visualize the space of the archive, it may appear as form of shelf. The past is stored and recorded in each time of Tabula Rasa through reclamation.

The Myth of Old Hong Kong

The past of Hong Kong is displayed as fragmented relics in the background of the everchanging city. The city’s artifacts as form of objects connect the “giant collective house” and its individual specific houses, mixing the autobiography and civic history. The past is reconstructed through curating the journey of navigation.

Hong Kong in the 1860 has the elusive charm og imperial grandeur and authentic indigenous culture. Throughout the history of development, it becomes a city that aspires to be like every other modern metropolis. The myth and origin of the city was infrastructure, which has shaped it from the barren rock / fisherman village.

P7 The Monument of the 21st Century Hong Kong How would the progress of Hong Kong be seen in the future? It is imagined that there will be a series of floating boxes of “History” in the city, recording the transformation of land and movement.

The Habour The former imperial grandeur has long passed and much of the city’s authentic indigenous culture is in decline, yet the harbour remains as an icon for future generations.

While some places can help confused older people, the wrong place dissolves an individual's social fabric and personal independence. The alien medical environment lacked connection to his past; it seemed to make him more isolated, fatigued, confused and depressed. Daydreaming even has a privilege of autovalorization. It derived direct pleasure from its own being... Therefore, the places in which we have experienced daydreaming reconstitute themselves in a new daydream, and it is because our memories of former home-places are relived as daydreams that these home places of the past remain in us for all time(Aging, Autonomy and Architecture,1994).

An organic shape was given enacted to the life of elderly over the points of encounter and sequence of nodes which the approach can be referred to the Amsterdam Orphanage. In the Amsterdam Orphanage case, its complex entity resembling a tiny city while children are divided into age groups similar to the social approach in the De Drie Hoven. It gives the building 'character' for the fact that it was designed for the specific social structure possessed by Orphanage or the Senior residents. The cluster concept enacted the life of residence is inspiring to my studio design. "When a corridor turns the corner round a patio, corner can be cut off to produce a triangular adjunct. " (Leupen, 2006). The beauty of the subtleness is framework and the interaction of space negotiating to the frame. The opening up of the corner is the incremental take. While the bedroom and the bathroom remain as the fixed essentials, the living and the dining area are adjoined to the neighboring unit. By opening up the corner, the user can choose between expansion towards inner communal area or outer gardening space.

On top of that, another layer of idea is added on top of that by generating the prototype from the Ergonomics of people in terms of how third age residents move around the space with the most comfortable distance - not too far not too close. The organic arrangement and rotation naturally generates the immediate communal gap between the units.

The previous prototype has little gap for the incremental process to manifest because if the tightly packed arrangement of the cluster. Also, self-contained units are being reconsidered to be a better option for the self-reliance life of the third age people in they early stage. Two types of “tissue” are being extracted out. The first one is the geometric proximity of the units and the rotation. The second one is the idea of changes in arrangement of dining/foyer/kitchen area as the anchor point inside the unit to expand to the communal space. (referencing back to De Drie Hoven by Herman Hertzberger.

PROGRAM : INCREMENTAL HOUSING

The take in the design is the changes in terms of the interstitial space to mingle between private and communal by thinking of the scheme as layers. Adapted from Georg Sahner's Integriertes Wohnen in Gunzburg(Birkhũser, 2007), the residence is divided into five zones namely private area(1), individual rooms(2), transition zone(3), communal area(4) and access walkway with niches(5). "The in-between is not a make-shift but a real place and a bearer of inter-human events."(Buber,1943 as quoted in Birkhũser, 1999). The idea of incremental is not merely adding or subtracting space along the building boundary or filling in existing gap but conversion of space from one form to the other in line with the need. It is perceived that my design will be gradually opened up from autonomous units to more communal to a city like atmosphere in the end - for the ease of external stimulation reachable from the units.

It will be the shifting from apartment type to a room filling in with more and more health care and communal activity space.

The massing is designed to have a higher profile to balance the massive existing buildings to achieve a lighter overall volumetric impression.

The project responds to existing structure of the school by the structural principle of alternating structural members - the Jingo structure. We modified the structural to be alternating longitudinal and transverse concrete tubes in each floor supported by shaft, continuing the structural logic of existing building which consists of alternating columns and girders.

The load-bearing system of crossing concrete tubes functions as girders and itself also space creating. The one-floor height concrete tubes enable the long span in planning of space without secondary structure. The long span reinforces the coherence to the existing horizontality of the existing school building, meanwhile it also allows the volumetric cantilever, which can be clearly seen in the entrance situation.

Taking the advantage of that light can slip in through the negative space generated by the interweaving of the structure. There will be no access to the zenith but a falling soft side light.

For internal arrangement of the spaces, we have our big space facing downhill for the scenery. The two big space are linked by one floor transition space.

When a person approach the building, he is first being compressed by the ceiling of the cantilever. After that, he enters the building and submerges in the big space. He is being lead by the big flight of stair case to one floor higher continuing the exploration of the landscape. The spatial experience varies as the person is being defined by the one-floor height ceiling again before he enters the big space behind. In the process, he is guided by the light permeated from the slit at the back created by the structure.
