On site there are many trees found, so when deciding on which side the custodian’s living space will face the wind will not be a problem as there are enough trees that block the weak winds prevailing mostle from the Sout Western direction. There are plenty of views of bodies of water so that may be used as point of view from the top of the mountain. I would like to a space that creates an interaction create between the custodian and the hikers.

Bearhead mountain receives a fairly large amount of annual precipitation, thus this may be used for conveniance.

Not only may collecting water on site be a useful tool of being green, but it may also be used for its efficiency for when a fire occurs

The gathering space may be used as a big fire pit.

This creates an inviting feel and adds more to the experience. Exploring different types of fire pits, i.e. sheltered ones vs non-sheltered ones

Model Explorations 1:200

Model 1

The concept of creating a ‘flowy’ layout comes about in this model. The idea is to have interlinking services- from access (either air or on foot) right to the lookout tower and inbetween being the gathering area/structure and water storage point.

Model 2

Materiality in model 2 is starting to develop, still in its conceptual form. i.e lookout tower is made from steel, helipad elevated from ground- supported on concrete slab.

I got to use this model to explore the various layouts and got a better understanding of the placement of my buildings.

Conceptual Explorations

Inspiration The temporary structures of the previous lookouts on site A brought about the idea to design a contemporary styled lookout tower that serves as a home away from home for the custodian. The design of the precedent fit the description of the contemporary tower I think is ideal to create. It has a residential aesthetic and makes use of materials that would be easily incorporated into the lookout tower on Bearhead Mountain: There’s an abundance of rocks on site and trees for the structure of the tower.

Using rocks can be a continuity throughout the site, i.e incorporating it into the fire pit design as well as the base for the heli pad. This creates a uniform standard of design for the site which supports the concept of creating a flowing space through the use of materiality.

Improving transport systems and experience for commuting passengers

UCT offers a unique bus shuttle service which is formally known as the UCT Shuttle. These fleets of busses are known as the Jammies, and they are free to all students and staff of the university. The service consists of 26 buses including one for UCT members living with a disability and commutes between all campuses and residences. The initiative to make a greener environment by providing mass transportation is a good step forward. Seeking other green projects within the transportation realm, I see a gap in many-if not all bus stops.

In this project I will be designing a sustainable, comfortable and productive bus stop at one of the stops located on UCT Upper Campus.

Being located on a mountain means access across campus can be steep. Thus, consists of many staircases. UCT has ensured a fair amount of disability access across most of Upper Campus with some areas needing more ramps

Site Selection There are improvements that may be made on each bus stop, but the one I have chosen has room for my maximum efforts in changing it for the better. The features which make it displeasing to use are the reason why I chose to work on this shuttle stop i.e. no seating area, no sufficient shading, not well known to be a stop until recently (2022) simply because of it’s aesthetic which doesn’t attend to the necessities of a bus stop.

Sustainable functionality

The process of transferring solar power into the charging points (only 2): Solar power is captured (highlighted in pink) and taken into the inverter where it gets changed from DC to AC then travels through the hollow steel as electricity to the plug points (highlighted in orange).

The same method is used for the electric car charging point at the parking area near North Stop on Upper Campus as seen in the image below
