AN URBAN MULTIPLEX

THESIS PROJECT - 2020

Type : Academic - Commercial

Location : Pondicherry

Urban multiplex is a design-based thesis, which has multi screen theatre as a main context along with a Fun zone, Food courts, and Retail shops. Most of the multiplexes are located near the center or in the suburbs of major cities and they contribute to the quality of urban life. This implies containing the growth of commercial developments in the urban or suburban area.

Puducherry is the busy tourist city which has more places to visit but fails in entertaining the people of the city and other invaders. Goverment of Puducherry is also taking steps in bringing entertainment zones in Puducherry. Lack of movie theatres is also one of the major reason to bring a multiplex come entertainment centre in the city.

SITE: 07 MASTER PLAN

The intent is to make buildings and facilities accessible to and usable by all people including those living with disabilities and may include those with inability to walk or difficulty in walking, reliance on walking/ mobility aids, blindness and visual impairments, speech and hearing impairments, limited-coordination of motor movements, reaching and manipulation, lack of stamina, difficulty in interpretation and reacting to sensory information and extremities of physical size.

The heart of any Entertainment Centre was the attractions. In order to attract people repeatedly Entertainment Centre needed attractions that changed continually over time. This is why nearly all Entertainment centre had movie theaters. These theaters were not the ordinary shopping mall theaters with six or eight screens, but large multiplexes that offered anywhere from 14 to 30 screens; some Entertainment Centre theaters had screens nearly as high as a threestory building. Theaters also enticed people to combine the movie with other attractions. Nearly onethird of all moviegoers combined a trip to the movies with other activities, such as dining or nightclubbing.

The major challenge for differently abled people is the level difference in movie theatres. Here the challenge is resolved by making the mid-level of the theatre is as same as the corridor level.

HOUSE OF PASSAGE

Type : Residential

Area/Status : 14,000 sqft / Ongoing

Location : Sunny Brooks,Bangalore

House of Passage is a luxurious villa located in a gated community called Sunny Brooks, Bangalore. The 14,000 Sqft villa had added amenities like a wine cellar, home theatre, gym, and sauna area apart from bedrooms and kitchens. The bedrooms are all large and have en-suite bathrooms with luxurious finishes. Overall, the villa is a perfect blend of modern design and natural beauty.

The requirement from the family of 8 of four generations is a 7BHK villa with a large landscape and open areas to entertain the family and friends along with the home office. The site is the northeast corner plot with lush green and coconut trees. To utilize the privileges of the unobstructed East and diffused North light, we tried to place the building mass slightly towards the South West to create East and North gardens.

The name House of Passage is because the villa with more amenities has very good connectivity in the zoning of the area, where the corridor which runs on all floors, acts as a passage connecting the family. The passage is defined in a better way on the marble inlay flooring throughout the house. The three interesting staircases - a marble staircase, a spiral, and a hanging makes the vertical connectivity more interesting.

CONCRETE PANEL RANDOM RUBBLE STONE

Villa has all the above-mentioned materials in the exterior and The combination of these materials would provide a modern contemporary look to the villa. The usage of the concrete fluted panel, random rubble stones, and white plastering in the elevation is balanced in an equal way. The gabion wall is made with the same random rubble stones near the toilet’s double-height area. The False ceiling and the two side walls in the balcony are treated with vox panels.

THREE VOIDS

Type : Residential

Area/Status : 5100 sqft / Ongoing

Location : Perinthalmanna, Malapuram.

Three voids villa is located in Perinthalmanna, Malappuram, Kerala. The name defines the zoning in the design, where the voids in the floor plan are created to retain the existing tree, well and also to bring a proper cross ventilation in the house. The green space in the west front, the courtyard inside the house in the south east, and the swimming pool in the north east are the so-called voids. Even the massing stands out by creating voids in each space and giving an interesting level of difference in and outside the house.

18

The clients are a family of five where the husband and wife are doctors with three small kids. The major requirement is a 5bhk villa with two kitchens and the villa having swimming pool views. Retaining the existing trees and the wells are also considered in the design.

The villa has a modern design with a focus on clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic. The exterior features a neutral color palette with a mix of materials, including wood, glass, and concrete. The house has large windows to let in natural light and provide views of the surrounding landscape. The interior likely features an open floor plan with a lot of natural light and a focus on simplicity and functionality. The villa’s design is likely focused on creating a sense of harmony with its surroundings, with a lot of natural materials and elements incorporated into the design.

In the elevation, tip wood has been used as a facade element and also acts as a privacy screen covering the large opening of the building without cutting the light and ventilation. Fundermax wooden panel and the texture paint with balanced white space in the exterior bring the warm to it. The interior of the building is followed in a Mid-century modern style with a more wooden feel to match the exterior.

CASA DE CAMPO

Client Mr.Mohamed Razal, Co-Founder of Nuvacotta Tiles had a great vision in designing a farmhouse for a weekend relaxation with family and friends. As the community itself is so eco-friendly and earthy environment, the client also wants the house to follow the same harmony.

As the major requirement, a 2bhk villa with an open living and dining area with an island kitchen and also an outdoor sit-out and dining. In addition to that a swimming pool and open-to-sky toilet for the master bedroom.

The living area has a massive opening on the east side with a beautiful view of the paddy field followed by mountains in the backdrop. Dining along with the island kitchen and Master bedroom has a view of the existing beauty of the landscape on the site, where the outdoor dining sit-out enjoys the same. The difference in the roof level and arched roof for the guest bedroom creates an interesting massing for the house.

INTERIORS

Type : Residential Interior

Area/Status : 2350sqft / Completed

Location : Prestige Silver Oak, Bangalore.

Located in the Whitefield area of Bengaluru, the Prestige Silveroak Villa is an example of what happens when colors meet neutrality. The 2,350 sq ft premise is a home for a family of four—a couple and their two boys and is designed to reflect the family members’ personalities. While each space in the home is treated with a splash of color, what really brings the home together is the spaciousness and supreme spatial quality of the space.

29
30

The living room boasts an army green sofa set and a white chair, alluding to an informal and stylish setting. Elements such as square wall panelling, artwork made of wood and a combination of sheer and luxe drapery imbue elegance. Potted plants, a gold-finished centre table and ceiling light and a colourful carpet weave the narrative together.

The guest bedroom attracts with its maturity brought about by a printed, neutral shade wallpaper and wooden blinds. A cane pendant light and green drapes contribute to its snuggly vibes. The primary bedroom has a serene but fun feel. Lemon yellow embroidered curtains with a botanical mural on the wall showcase the playful personalities of the users. A rubberwood sliding door leading to the walk-in wardrobe and the lush appeal of the custom-made bed stir opulence in the room.

31
32

On entering, a foyer defined by a white ducco-painted partition with an embedded reed glass inlay starts setting the home’s character. On one side is a custom-made, bright yellow cabinet with a mirror cut to fit its corner. This mirror reflects the painting on the other side of the foyer. Below the painting, a quaint bench balances the drama in the space.

The bar area is an instant crowd-puller with a bar cabinet done in bone inlay finish and a pull out countertop. The patterns of this piece, the colours of the surrounding seating and the geometric carpet add a distinct character.

What is most notable about the home is not just the emphasis on ‘green’ in the colour scheme but also its approach. Solar power meets all the energy requirements of the house, and a food crusher is employed for better waste management. The crushed waste is converted to manure and used in the back garden.
