Introduction Christian Brothers’ School, Glen Road is an “Outstanding School”. This endorsement of the Belfast school by the ETI (Inspectorate for Northern Ireland) has come on the back of some other glowing reports. The current Education Minister said “Every school should look and feel like CBS, as it epitomises what is a great school”. In 2015 CBS Glen Road reported 99% A – C in 5 GCSEs making it one of the best performing nonGrammar schools in the country. However, CBS is a great deal more than an exam driven school. In many respects it remains the school it always has been, a family school at the heart of the community. When Christian Brothers’ opened its gates in 1962, equality, social justice and educational excellence were the goals of its leadership team and they remain so today. Located in the heart of west Belfast, the school stands as a pillar of success.

When pupils join our school, we show them that through a combination of hard work and enjoyment they can become extraordinary. The excellent pastoral care shown to the pupils is very much the corner stone of the school’s success. The staff and pupils relate to one another more as a family than as teacher-student and this has resulted in stronger links between home and school, which ultimately benefits everyone. CBS has evolved new curricular programmes that cater for the pupils’ and modern employers’ needs alike. These are delivered by a highly professional and dynamic staff who understand the future employment trends within our society.

The school established a Sixth Form 12 years ago and now has 187 Post 16 pupils enrolled, studying a variety of A-Level and BTEC courses, many of which are not offered in other local schools. The innovative curriculum offered to pupils at Sixth Form has seen a growing number of pupils opt to join CBS, especially given the high success rate achieved since its inception. Last year the school was oversubscribed for Year 8 applications and this trend seems likely to continue with the future looking equally as bright.

For students who have decided to continue your education here in CBS and also to those of you who have come from other schools to join our sixth form we ask that you abide by the following code of conduct: The school day begins at 8:55 a.m., and you are expected to be present for registration. You are also expected to be present for afternoon registration, and may not leave for home study until after this time unless you have special permission from your form teacher. You are expected to bring a note written by your parent/guardian to explain any absence. Try to make routine medical and dental appointments at time outside the school day.

You may not book driving lessons during school time. Please avoid booking holidays during term time If you are persistently absent (and/or late) without good reason your teacher will give you a warning. If the situation continues we will write to your parents and require that you sign a contract which sets a target for attendance (and/or punctuality) as a condition of you remaining in Christian Brothers’ Sixth Form.

Post 16 Uniform Christian Brothers’ Sixth Form has a dress code. If your dress is inappropriate, you will be sent home to change.

Students are expected to wear the school uniform at all times and parental co-operation on this matter is essential. In recognition of your position as sixth formers some distinction has been made between the senior and junior uniforms.

Managing your time You are responsible for your school work and will be expected to meet deadlines set by staff. Your teacher and heads of departments must be informed if there are problems. If you fall behind, or feel overwhelmed by work, please inform a member of staff immediately who will try to help you to rectify the situation.

If you are persistently missing work/deadlines without good reason your teacher will inform your parents and require that you sign a contract which sets targets for improvement as a condition of you remaining in Christian Brothers’ Sixth Form.

Some deadlines for coursework are non-negotiable and staff cannot mark work after deadlines for assignments which form part of final AS/A Level & BTEC assessments, have passed.

Think carefully about commitments to paid employment outside school, making sure you leave yourself some time for socialising and relaxation. You must not undertake paid employment during the school day, even if it is a home study time.

As a 6th Form Student some of your classes might start and finish at times outside the normal school day or week. It is in your interest to be aware of the course structure and your responsibility to attend all classes punctually. You may not leave school during the day without informing your teacher. If you are ill and cannot find your teacher, you should see the Head of Sixth Form, or one of the Assistant Principals.

You are responsible for your money and valuables. Try to maintain a pleasant, tidy environment. Eating is strictly prohibited in the Library or Sixth Form Study Room.

You may not, under any circumstances, bring alcohol, any classified or potentially dangerous substance or object onto school premises.

Mobile phones must be switched off during lesson times. Phones which ring during lesson times may be confiscated by any member of staff.

Sixth Formers are required to sign the school’s ‘Acceptable Use of Mobile Devices’ policy which emphasises responsible use of mobile technology in the school for educational purposes and sanctions if this policy is not adhered to.

We expect Sixth Formers to be prepared to be involved in the life of the school and there are several events during the year when we will need the help of Year 13 and 14 pupils.

Removal from sixth form policy Pupils who do not comply with, policies and regulations of the school may be asked to leave the school. ●

If attendance falls below 90% an interview with the pupil and parent/guardian will take place.

Course Content :

Year 13: Module 1: Law Making and the UK Legal System Module 2: The Concept of Liability: Criminal Law and Contract Law Year 14: Module 1: Criminal Law (Offences against the Person) Module 2: Criminal Law (Offences against Property) and Concepts of the Law.

Qualification Value: Level 3 National Subsidiary Diploma in Health and Social Care (60 credits) Equivalent to 1 A Level - Distinction*=grade A*; Distinction=grade A; Merit=grade C; Pass=grade E.

Course Duration: The course lasts for 2 years

Course Content: Year 13 (3 units) Unit 1 – Communication; Unit 2 – Equality, Diversity and Rights; Unit 3 – Health, Safety and Security Year 14 (3 units) Unit 10 - Caring for Children and Young people; Unit 11 – Safeguarding Adults; Unit 12 – Public Health

How the Course is assessed: Each Unit comprises of a number of assessments which results in a completed portfolio of evidence. This is internally verified and samples sent to external examiners.

Progression routes: Successful completion allows progression into a wide range of Health/Community related avenues. In the past pupils have moved on to university to pursue studies in Social Work and Nursing.

Equally the BTEC will allow movement within further and higher education or indeed into the world of work.

Moving Image Arts Examining Board: The Examination board is CCEA

Qualification Value: GCE Moving Image Arts is made up of two levels: AS and A2. The AS can be taken as a ‘stand-alone’ qualification without progression to A2. However, to obtain the A Level qualification, students must complete both the AS and A2 levels.

Course Duration: The course lasts for 2 years

Course Content: The specification has a unitised structure. Students study two units at each level.

Qualification Value: The one year course leads to an AS qualification. To complete the full A Level requires two years study.

Course Duration: AS – one year. A Level – two years.

How the Course is assessed: Three written exams at the end of Year 14 Progression routes: Both AS and A Level Sociology carry UCAS points which are accepted by all universities in Britain and Ireland and can lead to further study in a variety of different degree courses.

Life & Health Sciences (DA) Examining Board: The Examination board is CCEA Qualification Value: GCE Life and Health Sciences (DA) – this award is very similar to the GCE Applied Science (DA) course and is replacing it. It is worth two A-levels.

Course Duration: 2 Years Course Content: Year 13: Three units which are internally assessed through portfolio evidence: *Experimental Techniques, *Brain Science and *Medicine, Drugs and Clinical Trials as well as three units which are externally assessed through written examination: *Human Body Systems, *Aspects of Physical Chemistry in Industrial Processes and *Material Science.

Year 14: Again three units which are internally assessed through portfolio evidence: *Scientific Method, Investigation, Analysis and Evaluation (in the context of a full scientific investigation), *Microbiology and *Analytical Chemistry Techniques as well as three units which are externally assessed through written examination: *Organic Chemistry, *Medical Physics and *Sound and Light.

How the Course is assessed: Year 13: Three units which are internally assessed through portfolio evidence and three units which are externally assessed through written examination. Each unit has equal weighting of 17% towards AS Award (DA). Ultimately each of these AS units contributes 7% towards overall A-level/ A2 Award (DA).

Year 14: Three units which are internally assessed through portfolio evidence and three units which are externally assessed through written examination. Each unit has equal weighting of 10% towards overall Alevel/ A2 Award (DA).

Progression routes: GCE Life and Health Sciences (DA) will allow progression to university for science, other STEM and non-STEM undergraduate courses in exactly the same way as the GCE Applied Science (DA) course has done for the last 10 years. Many of our students have studied a range of undergraduate courses from Optometry, Physiotherapy, Biomedical and other Engineering disciplines, Biology, Environmental Science to Computing/IT, Law, Game Design, Business, and Teaching. This award also contributes towards securing placement on STEM related apprenticeship courses, diploma courses at FE colleges as well as full time employment directly from school.

Step Up to Science Programme: CBS has enjoyed a very strong link with Ulster University through the Step Up to Science Programme for the last ten years. This programme provides pupils from disadvantaged inner city areas with opportunities to access university undergraduate courses through supporting the delivery of the GCE Applied Science (DA) award with lectures and practical lab sessions on the Jordanstown or Coleraine campus, visits to industrial partner sites and guest speakers. The summer school (in June of Year 13) allows students to gain up to 60 extra UCAS tariff points to use towards securing an undergraduate place. The programme ends with a full graduation ceremony on the Jordanstown campus the day after publication of the GCE A2 results in August. Three of our past students have won the Convocation Award which is a valuable prize for the Step Up Student of the Year across all the Belfast schools participating in the programme.

Travel & Tourism Examining Board: The Examination board is Edexcel

Qualification Value: The one year course leads to an AS qualification. To complete the full A Level requires two years study.

How the Course is assessed: All units are internally assessed in this qualification. Each unit specified assessment and grading criteria. A summative unit grade can be awarded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Progression routes: There are many options for studying Travel & Tourism on a full-time or part-time basis in FE colleges or universities. A student can typically go from a BTEC National programme to a BTEC Higher National. Many of these options are ‘sandwich courses’ with one year spent working in industry, and the opportunity to top up to a degree on completion.

Future Career Opportunities: Last year there were over 60,000 jobs specifically related to tourism in Northern Ireland. This means that 1 in 10 jobs in NI are in the Travel and Tourism industry. This course is ideal if you are looking for a future in this area and it covers a range of topics including Marketing, Retail, Destinations and Specialist Tourism.

Exam success from last year: There has been a 100% Pass rate for this BTEC course over the past 4 years since the course commenced, with many pupils achieving Merits and Distinctions.

Qualification Value: Equivalent to 1 A Level

Course Duration: Two years.

Progression routes: DEGREE - Pupils can study for a range of degrees at university. Last year students progressed to degrees in Animation, Computer Science and Website Design. It can also lead to related HND/HNC courses or indeed employment within the ever growing IT sector!

Music Technology Examining Board: EDEXCEL

Qualification Value: Equivalent to 1 A Level

Course Duration: Two years.

Course Content: Year 13 Unit 1 – Sequencing Systems & Techniques – Pupils will learn how to set up a home computer system. They will then learn a range of midi & audio skills using music software to create their own track.

Unit 2 - Music Technology in Performance – Pupils will learn how to create music using music software (Ableton live) to be performed alongside a video.

Unit 3 – Music Production Techniques – Pupils will learn about Mic techniques & will then capture live music through to the recording studio where they will mix and master.

Year 14 Unit 1 – Live Sound – Pupils will learn how to manage a PA system/mixing desk.

Unit 2 – Listening Skills for Music Technologists – Pupils learn how to listen to and analyse a variety of styles of music.

Unit 3 – Delivering a Music Product – Pupils will plan for, manage and record a band’s performance using the recording studio. They must then mix and master the final product.

History Examining Board: CCEA

Qualification Value: Pupils can achieve an AS (one year) or A’ level (two years) qualification.

Course Duration: A’ Level History is a two year course. AS modules are studied in Year 13 & A2 modules in Year 14.

Course Content: Year 13: Germany 1918-1945: (Weimar & Nazi Germany). Revolutionary Russia 1914-1941.

Year 14: The Clash of ideologies 1900-2000 (Fascism, Communism & Liberal Democracy). The Partition of Ireland 1900-1925.

How the Course is assessed: You will complete two written examinations at the end of Year 13 & two written examinations at the end of Y14.

Progression routes: An A’ Level History qualification is accepted for entry into almost all college and university courses and for entry into a variety of jobs and occupations. The list below is just a small sample of the courses and careers which history can allow you to access.
