case for a new, larger integrated A&E department and Urgent Care Centre at the Hospital. As many readers may know, I am a strong supporter of our armed service personnel and veterans. In September I spent some time raising funds for Help for Heroes as part of the Tesco National Collection Weekend. These national collection days are hugely successful, in 2011 they raised over £580,000 for Help for Heroes, which is incredible. A big thanks to Tesco for organising it, but the collection days are only successful because of the army of volunteers willing to give up their weekends for a good cause. So thank you also to everyone who volunteered their time and donated generously. Finally, I attended the annual Regatta hosted by MK Rowing Club on Caldecotte Lake. This year’s Regatta saw racing from five regional Clubs throughout the day. Last year, the ‘Challenge Cup’ was introduced - it is an award to the Club that won the most races throughout the day. Oundle, the winners of last year’s Challenge Cup fought hard to take it home for the second year in a row, but were beaten over all by Milton Keynes this year. I was very delighted to present medals to Tim Grossey, Captain of MK Rowing Club, and his team.

Nissan Juke 1.5DCI Acenta Premium pack Reviewed 10/09/13
T
he Juke is a little like Marmite; people seem to love it or hate it.
It drives really well; the new Start stop engine is very responsive for only a 1.5 diesel, and despite it’s tall stance it handles very well. Originally built as the Qashqai’s little brother, over the years it has really set a new standard in the Small SUV category. One of the key positives is the high driving position giving you great visibility. Even with all its curves you can see well out of all the windows making it good for around town, but still with the grunt on the motorway if needed. The Juke is aimed at people who want to stand out. There are lots of extras enabling you to really personalise your car, and it is a really different funky looking design. Lots of it’s competitors all look the same but this really does stand out. For me, the biggest down side to this car is the boot. Considering it is touted as a small family car, boot space is limited although you can take the boot tray out making it a bit deeper which
helps. The cabin however has plenty of space for 5 adults with good leg room in the back. The basic Visia model comes standard with nice alloys, AC, electric windows, stability control, and 6 airbags, and if you go one up to the Acenta premium which I tested, it gives you full colour sat nav, reversing camera, bigger alloys, privacy glass, Bluetooth, climate control, USB connection, and sports red interior - so a really good spec!! The diesel versions are particularly good on fuel. The Tekna model also gives you leather and heated seats although to be honest for the extra money the model we tested - the Acenta - is best value for money. MPG = 67.9 Combine d Top speed = 109 0-60 = 11.2 CO2 = 109 On the road price £1 7,790 (Lease price £174 + VAT over 3 years wi th 6 payments up front based on 10k miles a year)

f I could grow only one type of flower then it would have to be the tulip.
Harbingers of warmer days the choice available is mind-blowing. There are frilly parrot tulips bearing fringed petals, sturdy fat-flowered types and graceful plants with lily-like blooms. They are also tremendously accommodating. You can plant them much later than daffodils and narcissi because they don’t need to start producing roots so early. In fact you can plant them from now until Christmas! My mother uses them as annuals and rips them up after flowering but I can’t bear to do that so I plant them deeply and leave them in the garden where they return happily year on year. If you want to use them as disposable bedding you only need to plant them about 10cm / 4 inches deep. If, like me, you treat them as old friends then plant them 23cm / 9 inches deep and they won’t disappoint you. Tulips are wonderful value in containers. As a guide, a 25-30cm / 10-12 inch diameter pot will accommodate a dozen bulbs. For a larger 47.5cm / 19inch pot use 16 –18 bulbs.

Lay the bulbs in an inner and outer circle making sure that no bulb touches either another, or the outside of the pot.
Fill the pot with compost to within 2.5cm / 1 inch of the rim. I finish pots off with strips of daisies or anemones planted around the edge in colours which complement the tulips. Water everything in but shelter the pot from heavy rain so it doesn’t become waterlogged and never water in frosty weather. I use water-retaining granules mixed in with the compost. These help to maintain soil moisture throughout the dormant season. Feed the daisies or anemones throughout their flowering season in the Autumn and the Spring and you should be rewarded with a beautiful display sometime in April or May.

Tips for autumn lawn care
T
he end of the growing season is generally the time when people put away their lawn mower and prepare the garden for winter. However, after the hot dry summer months there some important tasks to be completed.
GreenThumb provide a complete Lawn Treatment Programme throughout the year consisting of weed elimination, moss control and fertiliser applications together with scarification, aeration, disease and pest control treatments to ensure your lawn is amongst the best in your neighbourhood at a cost that is less than doing it yourself. We believe that the more people are aware of a few basic facts the better their lawn will be says Clare from the Milton Keynes branch. With this is mind here are a few seasonal tips which will improve the health of your lawn and get it ready for next year. • Most lawns in the local area are based on a clay sub-surface which tends to be very compacted. Compaction means that rain and nutrients cannot penetrate to the grass roots, resulting in a weakened root system. Over the winter rain water lingers on the surface causing moss to form, whilst in the summer, when the ground is baked solid, rainfall will not absorb effectively. The best treatment for compacted soil is to use a hollow-tine aerator, which takes out plugs of soil, leaving small holes in the lawn that allow the root zone to breathe,

improves the uptake of nutrients and reduces lawn compaction. Surface water will also drain away more easily. • Over the summer, whilst the grass is growing vigorously, an accumulation of stems, roots and leaves intermingled with decaying organic matter creates a mat on the surface of the soil. This mat is called thatch and prevents moisture, oxygen and nutrients reaching the roots, where they are needed. It is also an excellent medium for moss to thrive. Scarification is an operation designed to reduce the amount of thatch by a machine with blades and knives which then allows new grass to thrive in the Spring. • Keep mowing your lawn regularly until the grass stops growing. Increase the height of your mower blade, and as always ensure that the blade is sharp. Do not cut your grass any lower than an inch at this time of year. • Clear up fallen leaves regularly. Fallen leaves prevent sunlight reaching the grass which stops the plant producing chlorophyll, leaving the grass a pale yellow instead of green. Leaves also collect water which encourages the dreaded moss to grow underneath. Shoulder Pain! – Sho What causes impingement syndrome? Impingement occurs to some degree in everyone’s shoulder. Dayto-day activities that involve using the arm above shoulder level cause some impingement. Usually it doesn’t lead to any prolonged pain. But continuously working with the arms raised overhead, repeated throwing activities, or other repetitive actions of the shoulder can cause impingement to become a problem. Impingement becomes a problem when it causes irritation or damage to the rotator cuff tendons.
What are the symptoms? • Generalized shoulder pain when raising the arm out to the side or in front of the body. • Pain makes it difficult for them to sleep, especially when they roll onto the affected shoulder. • Sometimes a catching sensation is felt when you lower your arm. • Weakness and inability to raise the arm may indicate that the rotator cuff tendons may be torn.
How is it diagnosed? The diagnosis of bursitis or tendonitis caused by impingement is usually made on the basis of your medical history and physical examination.

Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.

Nicola then introduced me to Hannah who was giving me a Full Body Massage. Once in the treatment room Hannah made me feel very comfortable. It was a warm & quite place. Hannah gave me some time to undress & place myself on the massage bed. When she started the massage we chatted until I was so relaxed I had no
energy to talk (which she didn’t mind) I just drifted into my own world of peace & relaxation. When the treatment was over I felt great. The knots in my neck were finally free. Hannah definitely knows what she is doing so I would highly recommend her. Korfball is a bit like netball and bit like basketball - but better!* It’s played in mixed sex teams of 4 men and 4 women on a court similar sized to basketball. Korfball is played indoors during the winter and outdoors during the summer. The aim of the game is to work with your team-mates to get the ball through the hoop (Korf) Men can only mark men and women can only mark women and unlike netball, you can’t shoot if your defender is within touching distance of you – so you need to move quick! We are looking for new players to expand the membership of MK Scrabble Club. Our members are a small friendly bunch who love nothing more than battling it out across a scrabble board. Formed in May 2011, after meeting for two years in a noisy pub we moved to our new venue at the Royal British Legion in Newport Pagnell earlier this year, where we enjoy the peace and tranquillity of a room to ourselves. Our firewood is sold and delivered in either Bulk Bags (90x90x90cm), Barrow bags (46x46x87cm) or Van level load (loose). The “Barrow Bag” has been designed for many jobs. It is much larger than the “Net Bags” and yet smaller than the 90x90x90 “Bulk bag” but, has the strength of a 1 ton Bulk bag, this making it very strong and durable so it can be reused many times. With this being smaller than a Bulk bag, the bulk bags need a folk lift to move once filled. The Barrow Bag can be moved by 1 man by hand. Hardwood consists of: Ash, Elm, Oak, Plane, Thorn, Acacia, Cherry, Maple, Sycamore, Beech Softwood consits of: Chestnut, Pine, Lime, Alder, Fir, Larch All of the logs that we sell are from sustainable sources harvested from our Tree Surgery operations throughtout Milton Keynes, Bedford, Northampton, Leighton Buzzard, Aylesbury, Oxford, Banbury, Stevenage, Hemel Hempstead, St Albans, London and surrounding areas. Burning wood as a fuel to warm our homes, heat our water and to cook with is a wonderfully natural way of recycling what could otherwise become just another waste product from industry.
