MP’s Diary

As many readers will know I try and visit as many of the schools in the constituency as possible and this month I to visit with teachers and pupils of Bow Brickhill Primary School. My visit this month coincided with World School Milk Day. World School Milk Day is organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and is celebrated in over 30 countries around the world. The goal of World School Milk Day is to celebrate children drinking milk in school. In the UK, around 1.5 million children receive free milk every day. For children under five their free milk is funded by the Department of Health.
While at the school I was delighted to help with handing out milk to the children as well as judging a picture competition. I was also very pleased to be invited to open the new LogNEC Competency Centre, located at Turing House in Wavendon Business Park. LogNEC is a delivery partnership between the Ministry of Defence and Boeing Defence UK. I am really pleased that Turing House will be the second Competency Centre to be opened as part of this partnership. This will see the migration of over 250 workers from four sites in Bicester, Worthy Down, Stanbridge & Witton, to this one central location in Milton Keynes. Many of the workers are re-locating to the area and I hope they will see what a great place Milton Keynes is to live. Once the Centre fully up and running it will be employing some 400 people and there are current

vacancies and numerous jobs being advertised locally. This will provide a great boost to the local economy as well as add to our growing reputation for high tech research and development. The last month has also been the Party Conference season, with the Conservative Party Conference running from the 7th – 10th October in Birmingham. This is always a busy time for MPs and this year was no exception. I was invited to take part in a number of discussions and events, including the main transport event of conference; The Transport Hub ‘Big Interview’. I was part of a panel interviewed on all elements of transport policy. I was also able to take part in discussions with the Association of Train Operating Companies and Virgin Trains, much of which focused on the recent announcements around the West Cost Mainline Franchise process. As many readers will know, this is an issue I am taking a close interest in as a Member of the Transport Select Committee. The Committee will also be calling the Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin, to give evidence on the cancellation of the West Coast Main Line franchise competition on Wednesday 31 October. There have also been a number of announcements made by the Prime Minister which I hope will offer some much needed support to rail commuters. Particularly the cap of inflation plus 1% on rail fare increases. I was also pleased that the Prime Minister announced a Council Tax freeze for the third year running.

Mr Jeremy Irons then came to the stage and read out another poem “To an athlete dying young from a shropshire lad” A.E.houseman (1859-1936) We all then stood and sang a hymn “Dear Lord and Father of mankind” by John Whittier(1807-92). There was the an address given by Rabbi Julie Neuberger from Vidal’s west London synagogue. And music sung in jewish echoed St. Pauls. We then heard prayers of intercession from close friends of Vidal: John Frieda, Dennis O’Neil and David Philp. The service began at 10.57 when the choir entering the cathedral. A reading was then read from the right reverend Michael Colclough, Canon Pastor, Canon in residence. He spoke about Vidal’s life, family and friends and of his humble beginning as an orphan. We then all stood up and read out the Lord’s Prayer. After we all sang a hymn written by John Hughes. It was then the turn of Nicholas Vega a close friend to Vidal to read a short poem. An address was then given by The Lord Puttnam CBE a childhood friend of Vidal.
It was then the turn of Elan Sassoon to address the many 100’s of people. He spoke about his father’s love of Chelsea football club, this was very emotional for all. The service ended with another hymn by William Blake called Jerusalem. The cathedral was packed full of people from all over the globe.

Weaving Webs! To enhance the children’s knowledge and understanding of the world, one of our first topics of the academic year was called ‘weave & spin’. The children learnt all about how spiders live and how they spin their webs. Everyone enjoyed watching a short film, brought into pre-school by a member of staff, showing a spider spinning its web. You have the freedom to will any version of your life, any story you want into being. Yet how often do you realise these things? The place you find yourself today is but a passing phase that’s playing out. Tomorrow things will shift and change again... Happiness is a choice. It is your birthright. This ‘here and now’ is the adventure – not the chore. If you find that you’re not happy, work out why. Don’t make any drastic changes; just begin to shift your thoughts. Begin to notice how you feel, how you think, react, respond to what’s occurring. When you worry, stress or fret, you’ll get more to worry, stress or fret about – for those are the live instructions you’re feeding life. The very nature of free will means you’ll get back what you ask for or more simply, what you continuously consciously and subconsciously send out – though you might not realise... The books that I have written will help you understand this process easily. You’ll see how life and other people push your buttons, hold you back and you then react. The Christmas Tree Maurice Rust, Frosts Garden Centre, Woburn Sands
In the 7th century a monk from Credition in Devon went to Germany to teach the Word of God, it is said that he did a lot of good works......and spent much of his time in Thuringia, an area which was to become the Cradle of the Christmas Decoration Industry. Legend has it that the triangular shape of the Fir Tree is said to describe the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Converted people began to revere the fir tree as God’s Tree as they had previously revered the oak tree. By the 12th century it was being hung, upside-down from ceilings at Christmas time in central Europe, as a symbol of Christianity. In the early 16th century Martin Luther is said to have decorated a small Christmas Tree with candles to show his children how stars twinkled through the dark night It is well known that Prince Albert introduced the German custom of decorating a Fir trees at Christmas to this Country for Queen Victoria following their first Christmas at Windsor Castle in the middle of the 19th century.
Buying a real Christmas Tree – buy early There is no advantage in last minute shopping for a Christmas tree, many people think that the nearer they buy a Christmas Tree to the big day the fresher the tree will be and last longer – this is not true. Because of the vast quantities of Christmas trees sold growers have to cut the trees several weeks in advance, so any trees bought on Christmas Eve are no fresher than the trees bought in late November. Another reason to buy early is that towards the middle of December trees bought then have been standing around for a month or more - getting damaged as people tend to ‘pick’ over many trees before making their final choice.

Another very similar variety of Christmas tree is the Serbian Spruce known as Picea omorika, this narrow growing tree is densely needled with attractive two-toned coloured foliage and is an ideal choice if you only have a narrow space for a Christmas Tree. In recent years the Christmas tree trade has been dominated by the introduction of the Nordmann Fir – Abies nordmanniana - the Danish Christmas tree, this striking tree is known for its needle holding properties, several weeks after they are cut. The needles is sweetly scented and are soft bluish green above and silver beneath - reasonably soft to touch ideal if you have small children. The Noble Fir – Abies procea is the variety of Fir tree used in America for Christmas trees, this variety is now becoming very popular in this Country, it is always more expensive to buy because it is more difficult to produce and takes longer to grow, the foliage is dark green and is unbeatable for colour and its pleasant fragrance. Most Christmas trees are sold as ‘cut’ trees - in other words cut off the root just above ground level. If you select a cut Christmas tree as soon as you get home ‘saw’ 2/3 centimetres off the base of your tree and stand it for as long as possible in a bucket of fresh water, leave outside for as long as possible before decorating. Erect your tree in a holder that will hold some water whilst indoors so that you can water it regularly. Some trees are sold containerised. Some small Christmas trees may have been grown in a container for all its life and if not kept indoors too long over the Christmas period may grow if planted in the garden after Christmas. Tall container trees are often fir trees that have been dug up in early November and potted into containers to sell on, these trees will struggle to grow in the garden as their roots have been damaged when lifted and potted.

Piriformis syndrome Piriformis syndrome occurs when the Piriformis muscle inflames and places pressure on the sciatic nerve as it runs from the sacrum and into the leg. The Piriformis muscle is a pear shaped muscle found in, well, in the bum. It attaches to the sacrum and extends across, and under the gluteus maximus, to the greater trochanter of the femur. The sciatic nerve passes directly under this muscle as it leaves the sacrum and travels through the buttocks and into the leg. The image shows the location of the Piriformis and its attachment points, as well as the relative position of the sciatic nerve. Therefore, if this muscle gets damaged or inflamed, it will press on the sciatic nerve, causing pain in the buttocks and down the path of the sciatic nerve, which is down the back of the leg. Pain down the back of your leg is called sciatica. The Piriformis has two functions, depending on what you are doing with your legs at the time. If you are standing, Piriformis is used to turn the entire leg outwards, pointing your toes to the side. If you are sitting, then it is used to open your leg outwards.
Lower back problems can also cause Piriformis syndrome. This is another compensatory reaction which occurs when the Piriformis tenses to protect against pain in the lower back and decreased, or altered gait.
How do you get Piriformis syndrome?
Do I need to worry?
One of the most common causes is sitting at a desk, or driving for long periods of time. This causes the muscles which bend the legs at the hip (flexors) to shorten or become tense. As a compensatory measure, the opposing muscles (the extensors) become tense too. The tension in the extensors can cause the Piriformis to spasm, causing pain
Not with Piriformis syndrome no. It is a muscle imbalance which can be corrected fairly easily with some deep tissue work and exercises.
Overusing the Piriformis muscle can cause it to become damaged and tension will arise from this. Exercises like cycling, or other seated sports like rowing, can cause damage by using the muscle to much, also known as a muscle strain. Another common cause of Piriformis syndrome arises from a stiffening or looseness of the sacroilliac joint. The sacro-illiac joint is a joint between the sacrum and the ilium in the pelvis. This problem will be discussed further in later articles.
