MP’s Diary

Let me start by wishing everyone a very Happy New Year. I hope that the festive season brought much happiness and warmth to you and your family. It is not very often that I get the chance to ask a question directly of the Prime Minister during PMQs, but I have been very fortunate that I recently had two opportunities to do so. I was able to draw the Prime Minister’s attention to the excellent growth forecasts for Milton Keynes which has shown we are one of the best places in the UK to lead economic growth. A recent Experian study suggested a forecast growth of 3.1% a year in our area. I was delighted that the Prime Minister recognised our success is largely thanks to the efforts of small and medium-sized enterprises. While this is good news, we cannot be complacent and must do more to ensure that local employers are able to find the right skills in our city. It is also essential that young people are able to find the types of jobs to which they aspire. To this end, I am organising a Jobs Fair with my counterpart in Milton Keynes North, Mark Lancaster TD. The event, which is targeted at young people in the age range of 16-25, will be held from 3-8pm on Thursday, 31 January at The Buszy, Central Milton Keynes. The fair is being organised in collaboration with the following organisations: Milton Keynes Council, Connexions, Jobcentre Plus, Milton Keynes College and the Skills Funding Agency. I also asked the Prime Minister if he would congratulate our local Formula 1 team, Red-Bull racing, on winning the world championship for the third year in a row. Red-Bull racing are a fantastic local company which are helping to grow Milton Keynes’ reputation for high technology and engineering. It is also a tribute to British engineering

in general that almost all F1 cars are now engineered, designed and built in this country. In his recent Autumn Statement, the Chancellor announced that the planned 3p rise in fuel duty has been scrapped altogether. This is very welcome news for us in Milton Keynes because we are home to many commuters and a number road haulage

and distribution companies. Many constituents had previously raised the issue of high fuel prices with me and were very concerned about the planned rise for this month. I did lobby the Chancellor to take action and I am very pleased that he has gone further than expected and cancelled January’s increase. This was one of the increases that the previous Government had put in place. Milton Keynes remains a vibrant city with various community organisations and charities. I make it a point of duty to visit as many as I can and I intend to continue doing so this year. Consequently, if you think that there is a community project or initiative that I should visit, please do not hesitate to get in touch as I would very much like to. Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012. The herniated disc Herniated discs are often referred to as slipped discs. This isn’t entirely accurate. The disc doesn’t slip out of alignment with the spine, like a block in a Jenga tower, the spine is too stable. Briefly, there are three major ligaments running down the length of the spine which prohibit forward movement of the disc, added to this, there are various tendons, ligaments and muscles either side of the spine which stop it from slipping to the side either.

stiffness. The herniation itself can press up against nerves which pass in the vicinity of the herniation. This causes pain, numbness or tingling sensations down the path of the nerve. The most common location for a disc herniation is the L5/S1 region, at the base of the spine. The nerve emerging from the L5/S1 level of the spine is one of five roots contributing to the sciatic nerve, and compression of this nerve causes sciatica. Symptoms: As mentioned, symptoms include pain and inflammation around the area where the herniation occurred. You will most likely experience sciatica, or pain down the back of the leg. The sciatic pain may increase when you cough, sneeze or pass a stool. These symptoms may come on quickly, due to an injury, or they may come on slowly over time. Treatment:

I was taught that the discs of the spine are like rolled up belts, made of cartilage. Each disc has a soft core called the nucleus. Now cartilage, or the belt in our example, is tough stuff, but doesn’t handle compression very well. When compressed, cartilage tends to crack. So let’s place a large brick on the front of the belt. The force of the brick pushes down on the belt and forces the soft middle against the back of the belt. As this is repeated over many years, due to bad posture or bending, cracks start to appear in the belt, until finally the belt gives way and the middle pushes out. This is a herniated disc. The body reacts to a herniation by causing inflammation, and inflammation causes pain and

I will always treat what I find. The most common course of treatment would be to reduce the inflammation around the herniated disc. This includes treating those muscles which have become tense and spasmodic. I treat the disc directly by gently moving the spine in a way which widens the gap through which the nerves pass, reducing the pressure on the nerve and reducing the sciatic pain. Friends in need The British winter is a wonderful thing: sunshine and mild temperatures one day and several degrees below the next. If you think that is confusing for us gardeners, then imagine what it’s like for the wildlife.

Christmases ago which has proved very popular with solitary bees and ladybirds alike.

For me, gardening is as much about the creatures which inhabit my plot as it is about the plants. In view of this, I like to make life as easy as possible for my little garden friends.

Top Bird-feeding Tips

I’m not the tidiest gardener in the world, but this turns out to be a bonus in my quest to help the local wildlife. So you might think I’m lazy for not cutting down bare stems and soggy seed heads, but in fact I am providing luxury accommodation for over-wintering insects. These in turn attract certain birds and other insects for whom the luxury accommodation is more akin to a fast-food establishment. When you trim hollow-stemmed plants, cut them into 10cm lengths and bind a few together into a bunch. Push this bunch of stems into a hedge or a sheltered corner and insects will find it...a sort of ‘build it and they will come’ construction... with apologies for the Kevin Costner film reference there! You can also buy some wonderful purposebuilt constructions. My mother bought me an impressively titled ‘insect condominium’ a few

A gardening friend of mine gave me a great tip. He suggested placing a couple of ladybird shelters near my rose bushes so that when the warmer weather finally comes, early aphids will be gobbled up by the ladybirds and their larvae. Start with the basics A good quality sunflower seed based mix in a tubular feeder is a great starting point and will attract a wide variety of birds. Add some extras Peanuts are a good source of protein and fat and are very popular. Raisins and apple chunks on a platform will attract blackbirds, thrushes and other fruit-lovers. Fat or suet is highenergy and gratefully received by many species during colder weather. Niger seed in small feeders will attract shy goldfinches if hung in a quieter part of the garden. Check your hygiene Feeders should be clean and mould-free or they may spread disease. Don’t forget water Fresh water is really important, especially if temperatures are below freezing. Safety first Consider placing stickers on patio doors to reduce the risk of collisions. Protect birds from cats by hanging the feeders high enough and removing any potential hiding places nearby.

You are not born on Earth physically to just live and die, when your time here is over – you don’t simply snuff out – life continues, it moves forward, it grows and evolves, and as you are part of life – so do you. No one is responsible for your life input – but you. You own it; you can use it, you create, shape, write and mould it as you wish. You have karma to work through, talents to hone and to gain; you have opportunities to collect and soul targets to meet, with much to accomplish and to contribute to the

larger world overview playing out. No one else can accomplish what you alone came to do; no one else is responsible for the footprint you’ll leave in your wake... How would you paint your life picture now? What would you change? What will you fine tune? What is it you want life to do? A new world order is birthing – and we form part of it – that’s why Nostradamus couldn’t see further forward – linking also with the long term Mayan calendar. 2012 and now 2013 is an incredible experience that we specifically chose to be part of. Never before has it been so easy to let go of what we no longer need – to start anew, and this too includes you, it’s what your presence here stands for and what you do. We are all part of life’s overhaul, its own new beginning panning out. With this in your mind – what will you now wish to change, re-define, accomplish or take forward – to program the next phase coming in?
