Kilimanjaro success again for local health charity The Milton Keynes based charity Climb Your Mountain (CYM) is celebrating another successful climb of Kilimanjaro, the world’s highest free-standing mountain (5,895m). The team of 10 successfully climbed the mountain and raised about £10,000 for the charity. This was the 6th Kilimanjaro trip for the charity and they have an exceptional summit success rate. Charlie Wardle, the founder of CYM, who was on his 4th trip said “Once again the team were brilliant and fully deserve their success and experience of a lifetime. The preparation, training, fundraising and hard work was all worthwhile.”

CYM has also linked up with a local orphanage in Moshi, close to Kilimanjaro and the team took over many bags of clothes, toys, pens and books and will do so again on future trips. CYM offers many of these challenges like Kilimanjaro, the Inca Trail, Everest Base Camp, Mount Toubkal and Great Wall of China and in the UK many weekend mountain trips to help raise funds for the charity and for people to have a great experience.

This month, in a slight change to my regular programme of school visits, I went to the Leadership and Training Centre (LTC) at Shenley Brook End School.
In March last year Shenley Brook End achieved National Teaching School status, this means they take a lead role in the training and professional development of teachers, support staff and headteachers from across the region. I was very impressed with the high quality professional training environment the LTC provides within the school. It is great that other schools can benefit from the high standards of teaching and training that Shenley Brook End has achieved. In a separate visit to the school, I answered questions from 6th Form pupils on wide spectrum of issues which were of concern to them, including the media and crime and punishment.
The airport already supports the local economy by welcoming air passengers heading for the motorsport hub at Silverstone. With the current demand for airspace and airport development in the South East of England, an already established site such as Cranfield will help contribute to local and international business going forward and I hope it will bring many benefits to the region in the coming years. I was recently fortunate enough to meet with Paralympic champion and double gold medallist Hannah Cockroft MBE to support the manifesto launched by the charity Whizz-Kidz. Whizz-Kidz is a charity that provides disabled children with the essential wheelchairs and mobility equipment they need to lead active childhoods. I was surprised to hear that Hannah Cockroft MBE actually received her first sports wheelchair from Whizz-Kidz in 2007, what a testament to the work they are doing. So, I am delighted to back Whizz-Kidz’s Generation Inspired manifesto. More information is available about their work on their website: www.whizz-kidz.org.uk.
I also visited Cranfield Airport to see first-hand the significant investment being made to attract business aviation to our region. During the 2012 Olympic Games Cranfield was one of the UK’s designated airports and saw an increase in small business aircraft during The Games. Closely linked to the work of charities like WhizzKidz is the ongoing Transport Committee inquiry into disabled people’s access to transport. If any local residents would like to share their experiences in this area I would be very happy to hear from them.

Introducing Secklow Sounds - your local radio station Currently available online at www.secklowsounds.org but with future plans to transmit on FM, Secklow Sounds is the local radio station serving the people of Milton Keynes. As a 24-hour station, in addition to live and repeat broadcasts, ‘on-demand’ show recordings are available through the website with many also uploaded to Spreaker and Mixcloud. The programmes are presented by an enthusiastic and committed team of 50 volunteers from all backgrounds and age groups, each bringing their own specialities on a wide array of music and other topics. The station is proud of its wide range of programmes that reflect the tastes of every type of listener. These include broadcasts on just about every kind of music genre, the arts, business, current affairs, religion, local interests and nostalgia. Secklow Sounds was the brainchild of station director and founder, Mike Johnson - winner of the 2000 Andrew Cross award for the best programme by a Restricted Services Station. The ethos is to create a friendly, family environment to bring people and communities together. In addition to the regular programme content, presenters interview local interest groups, entertainers, business people, charity organisers and others on-air and attend local events. This station’s role is succinctly summed up by Mike Johnson: “The intention is to bring together people from all backgrounds to produce an unrivalled variety of programmes celebrating the rich diversity of cultures, music, food and traditions that is Milton Keynes, and will include business, health, sports,

the arts, faith and non-faith groups. As a community station we will encourage participation from all citizens, defending their interest and reflecting their views. Cultural diversity is at the heart of Secklow Sounds and all ideas can be debated in our programmes, and a multiplicity of views will be fairly presented.” Secklow Sounds works in partnership with local organisations including Inter-Action MK who provide facilities at its headquarters for the studio. In return the station provides radio production and presentation training to its user groups. One
programme project: ‘The Groovy Gecko Radio Show’ involves young adults with learning difficulties. Shows are also presented by students aged from 14 to 16 and the station actively provides work experience for students studying media. On May 2nd Team Urban Cycle plan to cycle the 202 miles from London to Paris in the bid to raise in excess of £5,000 for Willen Hospice and are looking to the local community and business’ for help in achieving this. The team are Darren Smylie, Alex Foster, Gary Egan, Richard Egan, Jon Ridgway, Lionel Plummer and Joel Mcbrearty, they are funding all costs themselves to ensure all money raised goes directly to the Hospice. The 202 miles will be completed over 3 consecutive days of cycling and with the ferry booked and the route mapped out there is no turning back for the 7 strong team. Fitting training around work and family commitments on Friday nights and Sunday mornings, the team have already clocked up around 400 training miles.

Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.
“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”
Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way.
Bucks Biz, with units all over Milton Keynes, is renowned for straight talking and dealing; not hiding costs and not charging for many of the little things that keep businesses ticking, but which can be annoying to the point of distraction. “We really believe that if our customers are happy, then they’ll be free to get on with their businesses, which in turn will expand,” added Dominic.

No one knows your life journey better than you. The thoughts that you think; what you’ve been through, witnessed, gained and have lost. Yet would you believe that through it all - you were not alone? You have your personal thoughts, your personal likes and dislikes, your place in life is not the same as for any other – even within the same boundaries of the same family. Even a few close friends who go together to see a movie will gain completely different viewpoints at different times… From early years until now you’ve gained exceptional information and experience, but this is just the tip of what is destined to be yours during this lifetime. To date has simply been a gathering of your personal tools, talents and gifts, a gathering of Karma that once you know how - can easily fall away as you move forward. During every stage that you have lived through, you supposed that you were living who you were – or were meant to be, but again this was just a facet of your whole journey still unfolding, for you are more than you can begin to wish or guess… If you are indeed the master of your own life – you can begin to alter what comes in at any time. We are surrounded by energy, by love and by Earth’s own live giving and guiding forces, and working with them makes us confident and strong. Change might not always be easy, but we are in this process together, with tasks and talents that lie hidden until we find them. Nothing is so difficult that it can’t be overcome.
