CYM charity celebrates 5 years!
The Milton Keynes based Health & Wellbeing charity Climb Your Mountain (CYM) will officially be 5 years old on September 18th and since the charity was founded in 2008 over 2,500 people in the area have benefited from the range of services, activities and opportunities the organisation provides. CYM is open to anyone and aims to improve people’s physical and mental health via a range of physical activities and educational courses and workshops. Everything is done in a friendly, empathetic and safe way so that people can climb their own personal mountain they may be facing. There is support and opportunities to help yourself whether it is stress, depression, low confidence, ill health, bereavement, works issues, relationship problems, etc.
The free educational courses and workshops include topics on stress, depression, anxiety, confidence, barriers to wellbeing, motivation, nutrition and benefits of exercise. CYM also organises many UK and Overseas trips which are primarily for fundraising purposes but of course such challenges have great benefits and are always fantastic experiences for those who take part. Anyone can get involved and support the charity in this way. Trips like Snowdon, Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis, Brecon Beacons, Dorset Coast, Kilimanjaro, Everest Base Camp, Great Wall of China and the Inca Trail & Machu Picchu. The New Citroen DS3 Cabrio Reviewed 03/08/13
Citroen DS3 Goes Topless I have to say at first I wasn’t sure about this car as it’s like a half convertible but it did grow on me.
The DS3 has been a massive success for Citroen. They have really gone after the Mini and Audi A1 market, and with its great looks and drive, there’s no surprise they have shifted 36,000 of them in the UK alone. So it is only natural they have now come out with a Cabrio model - there is currently only a 1.6 petrol version but they are releasing a diesel later on in the year. I tested the 1.6 THP 155 in a D-sport model and it was a good spec with a very nippy engine. The main negative is that when the roof is down full, you can’t see behind you, but the positives definitely out way the bad; like you can sit 3 people in the back (which is unusual on a soft top) and the boot is great when the roof is up, so ideal for the school runs if you can live with putting the seat up every time someone gets in the back as its only comes in a 3dr. You can still personalise your DS3 with different coloured roofs and mirrors to the car, and you can
even get purple leather if you’re that way inclined! The drive is very smooth and quiet, and with a great stereo with bluetooth, & lots of gloss and stainless steel, the inside feels like a real quality car. It even has a button in the car you can press and call Citroen if you have a problem with the car or you have broken down and it will connect you directly to Citroens help line!! The diesel will be the one to look out for as the petrol version is a bit thirsty and if you can, stretch to the D-sport + that comes with nice little extras like leather as standard. MPH = 47.9 Combined Top speed =132 0-60 =8.2 CO2=137 On the road price £19,136 (Lease price £199+vat over 2 years with 6 payments up front based on 10k miles a year)

MP’s Diary

Parliament was in summer recess from July to August. Contrary to what some journalists write, this does not mean that MPs have a six week holiday! Apart from a normal two week break with family and friends, this recess gave me the opportunity to spend more time meeting local organisations, people and businesses. For example, the Milton Keynes Community Foundation kindly arranged for me to see some of the projects that they had funded and to also meet the people behind them. I visited the Walnuts School in Bletchley, a specialist school for children with Autistic Spectrum disorders and special needs. I took a particular interest in the sensory room, which had been funded by the Foundation. Staff at the school explained to me how the facility helps meet the very individual needs of pupils. In the school playground there are lovely play facilities that the Foundation had funded. I then visited a community garden project in Tinkers Bridge which the Foundation also funded. I heard how staff from Community Action MK train and support local community groups in Tinkers Bridge and in other areas across Milton Keynes. The sense of pride from residents at the Tinkers Bridge project was very evident and I commend Milton Keynes Community Foundation for providing funding for these local initiatives. Projects like these really generate a sense of togetherness and team spirit among residents.
As regular readers will know, I have a keen interest in transport policy and I believe that good transport links play an important role in ensuring we have a successful economy. With this in mind, I took a short trip down the M1 to visit Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (DIRFT). DIRFT is a major rail port and logistics centre, which is used by a number of big companies for their distribution centers, including Tesco, Royal Mail and Eddie Stobart. As well as being short distance from the M1 and M6, the site is directly served by the West Coast Mainline. DIRFT is very important for both local and national

distribution logistics, making sure that Milton Keynes is well supplied with the products that consumers like to see on the shelves. More importantly it helps boost the whole region as an international hub for trade, as it helps connect rail freight from the region with Felixstowe Port and the Channel Tunnel. I am grateful to The Malcolm Group, who manage the terminal, for showing me around.
Still on the trade and economy theme, I attended the ground-breaking event for the new phase of the John Lewis distribution centre at Magna Park. John Lewis has signed a 30-year lease on a 668,000 sq feet site and will be building a new distribution centre alongside its existing one. It is set to open in 2015. This is an exciting development for our local economy because 450 new jobs will be created in the Milton Keynes area. Finally, I have also had the opportunity to meet organisations as diverse as the MK Gallery, City Orchestra, Local Enterprise Partnership, MK College and the new Chamber of Commerce for an update on their activities. Discover the legend of According to legend, during the 16th century, at the small hilltop town of Colle Sannita in Southern Italy, humble servants ‘invented’ a nourishing, tasty snack that was passed on to others who worked in the surrounding fields. This was made from the left-over meat and vegetables from the lavish banquets held by their Lord and master, Duke Carlo Iazeolla. The filling snack later became a source of sustenance that helped the poor people survive the severe bad weather and famine that swept across the region during the 17th century that became known as the ‘Century of Darkness’. Gradually the snack (still devoid of a name) and consisting of meat such as pork belly or beef rolled in bread dough, became more refined. It was adopted by the youngest brother of the Paschitti family who had built the first house on land in the nearby ancient village of Decorata. The lad had been fed the snack by his favourite uncle, Antonio Zeolla (nicknamed Zizi) and when he was old enough he inherited the recipe from his uncle and ... not knowing what to call the sandwich, simply gave it the name ‘Pane di Zizi’ (Uncle’s bread). This in time became known as the PANZINI. In the traditional Italian way, the recipe for the Panzini has been passed down through generations of the Paschitti family that now can be found living far away from their Italian origins in New York, Miami, the State of Ohio, London, Essex and ... yes, Milton Keynes ... where one branch of the family, the Zeolla’s own La Collina. daffodils
Last Spring my neighbour admired my display of daffodils. “Barely any of mine have flowered this year,” she said, “What’s your secret? Your’s look better every year!” I was stumped. How hard is it to plant a daffodil? Dig a hole somewhere round September time and pop the bulb in pointy end upwards - job done! Except, when I broke down what’s involved, it’s not actually that simple. To produce a mass of bulbs which flower for a prolonged period year on year requires thought and preparation. First, choose the right bulbs. Pick the largest, firmest bulbs you can find. Then plant them in a deep hole at least 8 inches / 20cm and preferably 10 inches / 25 cm deep, in small groups. Most people plant their daffs too near the surface. This means they’re likely to dry out. Dry bulbs lack the food and moisture required to build up reserves for the following year. This results in lots of grassy leaves and not many flowers.
Once the daffodils have flowered leave the foliage untouched for six weeks before shearing it off. This gives enough time for the bulbs to reabsorb nutrients from the leaves.
Unfortunately daffodil foliage is untidy stuff and in a small suburban garden it can be very unsightly. There are two ways around this… The first is to treat daffodils as annuals and plant them in potting compost in aquatic baskets among the other plants. Once the flowers have gone the basket may be dug up and the bulbs discarded on the compost heap. The second way is to plant dwarf varieties. That way you can enjoy the flowers without worrying about the foliage. Time to get planting!

Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.
“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”

Heel Pain…. your first step to being pain free! What causes heel pain? The heel is the largest of the 26 bones in the human foot. It is designed to provide a firm support for the weight of your body. The heel absorbs the impact when your feet hit the ground when walking and running, and it springs you forward ready for the next step. While walking, the stresses placed on your feet can be one-and-a-quarter times your body weight (this increases to two-and-three-quarters times when running). So it is not surprising that heel pain is common. Although heel pain can be mild and will sometimes disappear on its own, in some cases the pain persists and can become a chronic problem. Heel pain has a variety of different causes, although the most common is a condition called plantar fasciitis. For more information about this condition feel free to call 01908299272
What are the symptoms? Pain usually starts gradually without any injury to the area. Often it is triggered by wearing a flat shoe (e.g. flip flops on summer holidays). This stretches the plantar fascia (thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes) too far and begins the inflammation of the area. Typically, pain is felt under the foot towards the front of the heel. It is common for it to start in one heel only and normally it is most painful when standing up first thing in the morning. It can often ease with activity but then become more pronounced at the end of the day, or after a long time spent on your feet. Heel pain/plantar fasciitis, June 2011 Patient information – Heel pain/plantar fasciitis
What is plantar fasciitis? Plantar fasciitis is caused when the plantar fascia is strained beyond its normal extension. This causes the soft tissue fibres to stretch and become inflamed, often where it is attached to the heel bone (although it sometimes happens in the middle of the foot). This results in pain, often accompanied by a cramping of the calf muscles as tightness of the Achilles tendon is a major contributory factor. The underlying position of your foot is often to blame for this condition and therefore advice on shoes and insoles is important. A foot that flattens excessively on standing is called a ‘pronating’ foot and this needs to be corrected by using orthotic devices (these are special insoles or inserts to improve the way the foot functions). Plantar fasciitis is more common in people who spend all day on their feet in flat, unsupportive shoes or who are overweight. What is the treatment for heel pain? The best way to resolve heel pain is by doing several things at once: 1. Check your footwear: avoid flat, unsupportive shoes. 2. Stretch out the Achilles tendon and calf muscles. 3. Use insoles and orthotics to correct any foot faults and cushion and cradle the arch while it heals. 4. Use anti-inflammatory medication. If you are already taking medicines from your doctor please consult a pharmacist prior to taking any over the counter medicines. 5. Contact PC Physiotherapy for a free biomechanical assessment on 01908299272 Preventing heel pain Try minimising the things that cause heel pain to start: • Lose weight. • Where possible, reduce the time spent on your feet. • Wear shoes which have some padding or shock-absorbing material in the heel.
You can buy heel pads in most good chemists and these will reduce the impact of walking. • Wear shoes that fit well and aren’t worn down on the heel or soles. • If you’re taking part in sports, wear appropriate shoes and warm up (and down) properly before exercising. • If the heel pain is associated with a particular shoe, avoid wearing that pair for a while. • Avoid walking barefoot on hard ground.
