Local therapist joins national awareness-raising campaign Did you know that anyone can set up as a massage practitioner, hypnotherapist or other complementary therapist? What should the public look for when deciding who to see? A Milton Keynes based Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist is acting as a Local Champion for the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), the UK regulator for complementary healthcare that was set up with government funding and support. Practitioners registered with the CNHC meet national occupational standards and abide by a rigorous code of conduct, performance and ethics. Once on the register they can display the CNHC quality mark.

POSITIVE LIVING Prosperity...
Things are not getting worse – life is simply readjusting, it’s finding a new centre of balance and wellbeing, and that goes for humanity too. We are evolving. Collectively we are moving into ‘a new state of conscious thinking’ and a ‘higher world perception’ born of hindsight and lessons from the past, hopes for the future and wiser needs of the now. Nothing can remain as it was - so this presents challenges as daily we all adjust to the flow of changes coming in. What once served us well serves us no longer as we grow beyond outdated dogma, rules and boundaries. Materialism is fading, and as we understand we need less, we will consume less and therefore work less, thereby reducing the stresses of our requirements upon the planet and the footprint we’ll leave collectively in our wake. The life we are living now is also born of decisions and choices of generations past. We are the products of the best and the worst our ancestors and ourselves have experienced. We have copied perceptions and bought into fears. We are living examples of freedom, free will and free choice, born of our own personal wants and democracies dreams... Yet who are we really? Where are we heading? What do we know? What is it we want out of life? We are basically good, kind, hardworking individuals, just wanting a normal easy lifestyle and life. We do our best to help others. We recycle and love the world we are part of, but often more than that we find ourselves stressed and unsure, despite all of our personal efforts to be otherwise - we don’t like how we see things unfolding. In an ideal world we would all get along, we’d respect and understand our sameness as well as our differences. What has happened instead is that cultural beliefs and individuals clash. Not every person on the planet operates from the same level of morality and intellect; some choose chaos and destruction over peace. Freedom means different things to different people at different times. Prosperity is just one of those differences. Here in the UK we are far better off than most of us realise. For a tiny island we sure have a powerful punch... We are capable of standing equally alongside larger, richer nations. We set the bar for good conduct and fair trade. We find the resources to help those in need wherever need occurs; we are forerunners in technology, education

and science; we want for nothing and want little from neighbouring countries and communities; we achieve to the highest standards that we can. Prosperity is a right we will all achieve, but not always in the way that we think. We fuel our pockets, our personal needs and requirements, but what about the needs and calling of the soul and the reasons we are here physically living life? We live in a segment of time where our most basic physical needs are easily met. On a scale of one to ten, extreme poverty no longer exists in our personal circles of living and sight. We have independence. We have tools to do our work. We have free time and entertainment for our pleasure... Life itself is now calling for our help, our needs have been met to its best ability, we are now being asked to give back. What would you do if you were able to ‘pay life something forward’; if you knew you had a worldly task to aid the changes coming in? What if you’re whole life you had trained to be exactly as you are - how would you reach out to the bigger picture – how could you help? You are not the victim of circumstance – but a soul in possession of specific talents and strengths, born of everything you have known and endured. You have compassion, understanding and a good solid working mind with intuition, so what have you been dreaming of lately? What would you like to see put into place? Each person living now came to Earth with a ‘soul’ agenda, a specific higher calling that they alone can fulfil. Life is calling now for this ‘pay back / contribution’ to occur, not only for ourselves but for the children we love and cherish and for generations that will come along later. Prosperity is here. Our dreams, wants and needs have been met, indeed we past these goal posts long ago... MP’s Diary
By Iain Stewart MP, Conservative MP for Milton Keynes South
Parliament returned from its Summer Recess at the start of September and this was a good opportunity to take stock of forthcoming issues on the Parliamentary Agenda. As a Member of the Transport Select Committee I am closely involved in scrutinising the Government’s transport policy. Before the summer break the Committee was conducting an inquiry into the Government’s proposed reforms of the railways, Rail 2020. As part of the this inquiry the Transport Committee will be looking at where efficiency savings can be made on the rail network and how a balance should be struck between the taxpayer and the farepayer in funding the railway.
Foremost in my mind as the inquiry progresses is how efforts must be made to reduce the cost of rail fares for commuters. Many residents in Milton Keynes are regular rail users and I know that the cost of rail travel can be a significant proportion of the family budget. At present there appears to be a number of potential benefits to Milton Keynes contained in the proposals, such as cheaper tickets for those who use trains regularly but not frequently enough to warrant a season ticket. Additionally there are large scale investments in MK rail services, such as re-opening the East-West Rail line, new carriages to lengthen trains, and extra new fast trains for London Midland. All together I hope

this will mean a better service at a better cost for local commuters. As many readers will also know FirstGroup will be taking over from Virgin Trains as the franchise holders for the West Coast Mainline from December until 2026. As this is the line that serves Milton Keynes, I have understandably received a number of letters from commuters concerned about this change. Through my role on the Transport Select Committee I will be looking at the details carefully. Additionally I met with the Managing Director of FirstGroup this week to discuss their bid and ensure a good service for Milton Keynes Commuters. Another transport topic which has recently generated some controversy is discussions over a new runway at Heathrow. The Transport Committee has agreed to hold a major inquiry into the Government’s aviation strategy, which will include consideration of options for expanding airport capacity in south east England. We will look carefully at the arguments for and against expanding Heathrow, as well as proposals such as the Thames Estuary airport or so called ‘Boris Island’. The inquiry will be looking carefully at the environmental and economical aspects of expanding air capacity in the south east. Guide lines for planting new fruit trees Maurice Rust, Frosts Garden Centre, Woburn Sands
Go into any fruit shop of supermarket, you will find the shelves full of English grown apples and pears at this time of year. Your thoughts may turn to ‘growing your own’. If you only have a small garden or allotment growing an apple or a pear tree is not a problem as their many forms and ways that fruit trees can be grown. If you have lots of space then the most obvious choice is to plant a ‘Half standard tree’ where the head of the tree will be grown at the top of the trunk about 120 to 150 centimetres off the ground (4 to 5ft). A bush fruit tree is when the head of the tree is grown on a short trunk in the region of a metre (36 inches) or less. Fan fruit trees are when the branches are grown equally spaced in the shape of a flat fan. Fan shaped fruit trees are grown to be planted against a wall or garden fence. Espalier or horizontal fruit trees are where the branches are grown either side of the main stem and are usually 30 cm (12 inches) apart. Normally these are purchased with two or three layers of branches, however over time you can develop other layers of branches depending on what are your requirements. On some very old properties you can find them as high as the eaves of the house with many layers of fruiting bearing branches. Corden fruit trees is where the fruit is grown on a single stem planted at an angle of 45 degrees, these are traditionally planted in a row supported by wires spaced 120 centimetres (4ft) apart to form a hedge. Triple-corden fruit trees are usually grown with three upright stems growing off a short lateral growing branch either side of a short trunk usually 30centimetres high (12 inches). Also available in this method of growing fruit trees are what is known as a double ‘U’ corden with four upright growing stems or a ‘U’ corden where two upright stems are grown. Step Over fruit trees, these are lateral growing stems grown either side of short trunk 30 centimetres high (12inches) and are usually grown on the edge of the garden plot to form a small hedge that you just ‘step’ over. Family fruit trees are grown with three compatible pollinating varieties on a short trunk.

Root stocks Apples are grafted on to different root stocks depending on how high you wish your fruit tree to grow. Some varieties are weak growing varieties so they are grafted on to a strong growing rootstock whilst other varieties need to be slowed down a little. The following is a simple guide. On apple tree labels you will often see M27 or M9 this means that the root stock was originally grown at the East Malling Research Station in Kent. For ‘Very dwarf’ growing fruit trees M27 growing less than 2 metres high (6ft), (these can also be grown in large containers. Dwarf M9 growing just over metres high (8 ft), Semi Dwarf M26 growing 3 metres high ((9ft), MM106 growing 4 metres high (12ft). Pears are grown on just one root stock which is known as Quince C that generally grows around 3 metres high (9ft).
Pollination This subject is often made unnecessarily complicated. This brief outline will hopefully be of some assistance. Most fruit trees are planted in close proximity of other gardens so activity of bees and other insects is helped by such close planting. All apples and pears flower at different periods, over the years Research Stations have been able to place varieties into different groups and ranked 1,2,3,4, and 5. Number ‘one’ being a early flowering apple and ‘five’ being very late flowering apples, so that providing you plant two fruits of the same number or for eg. 3 and 4 the flowering periods overlap and they will ‘cross pollinate’. To help you select suitable pollinating varieties on plant labels each fruit tree you should find the variety marked as either 1,2,3,4, or 5. Some varieties are ‘Self fertile varieties’, this means that the flowers will pollinate with the pollen from other flowers on from the same tree. On plant labels these varieties are marked ‘SF’. Triploid varieties – there are a few varieties of apples that are marked ‘Triploid’, in simple terms they are poor pollinators therefore they need planting with two other pollinating varieties. If you have an ornamental flowering crab apple tree they will often assist in the pollination of your apples.
Biennial bearing This condition often afflicts old apple varieties and in particular varieties such as Laxtons’s Superb or Blenhiem Orange. In one year they will produce very heavy crops of fruit when the tree uses up all its energy to sustain and mature the current crop but then it has no reserve to form flower bud for the following spring resulting in little or in some cases no fruit at all for that year.

Milton Keynes Village Firework Display It’s nearly that time of year again, this long established event will once more take place adjacent to Milton Keynes Village Hall and the Pavilion. Lower Back Pain Back pain plagues many of us. A whopping 8 out of 10 people get back pain at some point in their lives, equating to 80% of the population according to the NHS, and in the years of 2010 and 2011, 7.6 million working days were lost due to back ache. Back pain has various causes, from plain old stress, to the more serious causes, like a fractured vertebrae or a herniated disc. This article focuses solely on the least serious cause of back pain, one which has no obvious cause, and for this reason, is referred to as “non-specific back pain.” Non-specific back pain usually presents as pain in the area at the base of the spine. It can start after exercise, or it could come on slowly, over a period of months. This kind of back pain is not usually associated with any kind of fall or trauma. The pain doesn’t radiate to other part of the body, that is to say, it stays local to the spine. Exceptions!! There are always exceptions to the rule and here are two of them: If you have lost the ability to control your bowels or bladder, you will need to seek medical assistance as a matter of emergency. If you have a fever and your urine smells funny, you may have a kidney infection, see your GP. So what’s going on? In the case of non-specific back pain, the pain you are feeling is likely to come from the muscles, not the bones. Your muscles are tense, due to being over-used from either sitting or standing for long periods of time. This state of tension is what is causing the pain. Fig 1. The image shows the muscles as viewed from the back. I have removed the opposing muscle of each pair so that you can see all the different muscles. All these muscles are responsible for bending the body from side to side and, more crucially, extending the spine. In short, they help you sit and stand up straight. It is likely to be these muscles which are tense and causing pain. So what do you do about it? Your doctor may well offer you pain killers and antiinflammatories to deal with the pain. If the pain persists, or if you want to be rid of it more quickly, then consider seeing a physiotherapist, osteopath or chiropractor. They will treat the muscles causing the pain. I personally have treated many lower back problems with some startling results. There are exercises which may also help, and I plan to write more about this in later articles.
