Over the past few months, I have been taking part in a project called the Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT) Fellowship which allows MPs to get involved in a variety of industries.
Millions of people use buses and trains every day, and as a commuter city Milton Keynes is reliant on these services. With that in mind, I have begun my Fellowship with UK transport operator Go-Ahead’s three rail companies, Southern, Southeastern and London Midland. I have also visited Brighton and Hove buses. The Fellowship has provided me with an important insight into the work that goes on behind the scenes on a daily basis to make sure people can get where they need to be. The programme of visits has included the train drivers’ depot at Brighton, where some 165 drivers report for duty, and a visit to ticket offices to meet staff at Brighton, Haywards Heath and at Milton Keynes Central. I have been very impressed by the commitment to improving services for passengers and the ongoing experiences of the Fellowship will be very useful in informing my work on the Transport Select Committee. I am also keen to highlight a new Inquiry that the Transport Committee will be commencing in March. It will be looking at disabled people’s access to transport. This is an area of interest to me because of the feedback that I often receive when I meet local organisations representing disabled people. I would be interested in receiving the experiences of disabled people locally, so that this can assist me during the Inquiry. I am particularly interested to know what

works well, what works less well, and what areas should be consider for investigation. If any readers would like to get in touch with their experiences my contact details are below. Milton Keynes is a beautiful place to live in. This is probably why we experienced a 17% population increase in the 2011 census. With such an increase comes pressure on local services. This is why I have begun a campaign with my colleague, Mark Lancaster MP, for our A&E to be expanded. Locally, more resources are going into the NHS and the number of clinical staff is increasing, but to cope with future growth forecasts more will need to be done On a different issue, I enjoyed visiting the home of John Silverthorn, a constituent whose house is one of the 75 in which energy company E.ON is trialling its smart homes of the future. Under the trial, participants are able to monitor and control their central heating, via a web browser, tablet or smartphone app on the go. It also gives households the opportunity to reduce their energy costs, improve their comfort and control their homes better. Introducing the thoracic spine The thoracic spine is the middle section of the spine comprising of 12 vertebrae. It starts at the base of the neck, marked by a protruding vertebra, and meeting the lumbar spine just under the ribs. There are 12 ribs, which attach to each of the thoracic vertebrae in the back and to the breast bone, or sternum in the front. Ribs 11 and 12 however, do not attach to the sternum, and are called floating ribs. As with the cervical and lumbar sections of the spine, nerves emerge from the thoracic spine and proceed to various parts of the body depending on where in the thoracic spine they emerge. Most of the nerves run along the ribs of the rib cage. The nerves which emerge from the very top of the thoracic spine don’t, they supply the upper and lower parts of the arm, but more about them in later articles.
So what can go wrong with the thoracic spine: The thoracic spine is fairly robust, but despite this, you could suffer anything from crush fractures resulting from a fall, to arthritis, slipped discs and dislocated ribs. In this article I will focus on the most common complaint, muscle spasm caused by bad posture. Enter the trapezius. The trapezius muscle is a large muscle which is shaped like a large kite. It attaches to the thoracic spine and up to the neck and out to the shoulders. It is coloured red in the diagram. The muscle can be divided into three major sections, the upper, middle and lower trapezius. The upper region of the muscle is responsible for lifting the shoulder blades, while the middle and lower regions pull the shoulders back and depress the shoulder blades downwards. Now, your boss has been on your case for that report which is due by 5, and you have discovered that it needs a major re-write. You are stressed and you’re hunching. This pushes the neck forward and puts the upper fibres of the trapezius in a bad

postural position. Do this over months, and the trapezius will form protective spasm, which hurt. It isn’t just office workers who are affected, but sports people like cyclists who are hunched over handlebars all day or hair dressers who spend most of their days with their hands in the air. Tense trapezius muscles can form tight bands of muscle in the shoulder and mid-back, causing pain. The middle fibres of the trapezius can also form trigger points, which refer their pain elsewhere, most often as a headache. The good news is that this kind of thing is easily treated with specifically targeted deep tissue work and mobilisation of the thoracic spine. Jacque Cilliers. Adv Dip. MT. The Well Being Therapy Centre was established in March 2011 by two very experienced counsellors, Lynda Gilbert and Marise Cohen, to offer a new counselling service to the people of Milton Keynes Originally based at The Well in Willen, we moved in September 2011 to The Quaker Centre in Downhead Park.

Greenhouses Do you have a greenhouse? February is the perfect time to think about installing one so you can get a jump on the growing season.
The ability to shut the door on nasty weather makes pootling about and checking how things are coming on a much more pleasant experience. If your greenhouse has a power point you can have heat and light at your fingertips too, allowing you more time to potter. Don’t think it has to be huge and unsightly. There are so many styles available now, from the traditional cedar-framed variety to pretty bijou Victorian constructions. You could even go a bit sci-fi with a geodesic dome! As well as providing the perfect environment to start off early seedlings, a greenhouse means you can extend your growing season for fruit and vegetables. Don’t limit yourself to tomatoes. If you choose your varieties carefully you can try strawberries, peppers, aubergines, peaches, nectarines and grapes. Choosing the right site is important. Make sure that the ground is level. Your greenhouse should receive the maximum amount of winter sunlight available. Be sure to consider any shadows cast by existing buildings and trees, including those trees which are not fully grown yet. The most important time for sun to reach a greenhouse is during the spring and autumn when the sun is low in the sky. Greenhouses are all about temperature. Obviously they are a place of warmth, but they shouldn’t be too warm. It’s easy to cook your plants even in a British summer. Place a thermometer in the shade near the middle of your greenhouse and monitor the temperature at different times during sunny and cloudy weather. Most plants thrive best around 15-21C. If the temperature regularly reaches 26C or higher, you will need to ventilate.

The simplest and cheapest way to ventilate is to open the door and roof vents in the morning and close them in the evening, but ventilation systems can be fitted which are automatically triggered as the temperature rises. Greenhouses do require some maintenance. If you already own one, then February is a good time to give it a clean. Disinfect the entire greenhouse-with a brush and a mixture of diluted bleach, keeping it away from the plants. Open up any vents to let the fumes out. Scrub down all the walls and floor, then rinse with clean water. Throughout the growing season spray the walls and corners with a hose set on the jet nozzle. This helps keep spider mites and whiteflies to a minimum. A greenhouse can be a wonderful addition to a garden. Well designed, well stocked and well arranged it can be a thing of beauty too.

Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.
“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”
Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way.
