There has been much discussion around changes in our city over the past few weeks. In particular there have been some large planning applications which would see more houses being built and with that new schools, doctors surgeries and other key infrastructure. I have always been an advocate of the “I before E” principle, infrastructure before expansion and believe strongly it is key that it is maintained as we grow larger as a city.
What I find so impressive is the way local voluntary organisations cope with the rapid rate at which we expand. I recently visited STaSS, a city wide HIV Charity, offering support and assistance to those who suffer from the disease. Giving both emotional and practical help, STaSS and their volunteers ensure people with HIV don’t feel alienated from our community. With a high level of undetected HIV prevalent in Milton Keynes STaSS not only works with people who are HIV positive, but also offers HIV tests for free across the city. I was pleased to be able to have a test practiced on me and would urge others to do the same-you don’t even see the needle! Another organisation which is coping with the increase demand for its service is the Food Bank. Offering food
and other goods to those most in need, the local Food Bank is simply invaluable. I was pleased to be able to go and help stack the shelves and put together food parcels for a morning recently and was impressed by the amount of donations made. It is a great example of how we are supporting each other in our community but need is great and so donations are always appreciated. Our Food Bank has a great website which tells you what goods are most needed and how you can make a financial contribution. You can view it at www. mkfoodbank.org.uk . With MK being a sporting city I enjoyed trying out a sport, not usually associated with Milton Keynes, by joining the team down at Haversham Sailing Club. With courses available for novices (especially youngsters over the school holidays) and race days held regularly on weekends, it really is a blast. I thoroughly enjoyed being taken out on a dingy, feeling the wind in hair and the clubhouse bar afterwards was also good fun. With the weather having been so good, I would strongly recommend people explore it as a new sport and get in touch with the club.
The closure of the Chamber of Commerce in Milton Keynes a few months ago was met with great sadness with all who were associated with it. It was therefore with great delight I met with Paul Griffiths who has set up an entirely new organisation, accredited by the British Chamber of Commerce-Milton Keynes Chamber. We have the largest number of small businesses in the country and have been named as the best place to do business outside of London in the UK so there is no doubt there is a need for such an important asset to businesses. Paul , who has been Chief Executive of the very successful Northampton Chamber of Commerce for some time, has already signed up many local businesses, big and small, in MK who will benefit from HR advice, briefings and other support. I am looking forward to working closely with him and the new Chamber. The New Citroen DS3 Cabrio Reviewed 03/08/13
Citroen DS3 Goes Topless I have to say at first I wasn’t sure about this car as it’s like a half convertible but it did grow on me.
The DS3 has been a massive success for Citroen. They have really gone after the Mini and Audi A1 market, and with its great looks and drive, there’s no surprise they have shifted 36,000 of them in the UK alone. So it is only natural they have now come out with a Cabrio model - there is currently only a 1.6 petrol version but they are releasing a diesel later on in the year. I tested the 1.6 THP 155 in a D-sport model and it was a good spec with a very nippy engine. The main negative is that when the roof is down full, you can’t see behind you, but the positives definitely out way the bad; like you can sit 3 people in the back (which is unusual on a soft top) and the boot is great when the roof is up, so ideal for the school runs if you can live with putting the seat up every time someone gets in the back as its only comes in a 3dr. You can still personalise your DS3 with different coloured roofs and mirrors to the car, and you can
even get purple leather if you’re that way inclined! The drive is very smooth and quiet, and with a great stereo with bluetooth, & lots of gloss and stainless steel, the inside feels like a real quality car. It even has a button in the car you can press and call Citroen if you have a problem with the car or you have broken down and it will connect you directly to Citroens help line!! The diesel will be the one to look out for as the petrol version is a bit thirsty and if you can, stretch to the D-sport + that comes with nice little extras like leather as standard. MPH = 47.9 Combined Top speed =132 0-60 =8.2 CO2=137 On the road price £19,136 (Lease price £199+vat over 2 years with 6 payments up front based on 10k miles a year)

Planting
daffodils
Last Spring my neighbour admired my display of daffodils. “Barely any of mine have flowered this year,” she said, “What’s your secret? Your’s look better every year!” I was stumped. How hard is it to plant a daffodil? Dig a hole somewhere round September time and pop the bulb in pointy end upwards - job done! Except, when I broke down what’s involved, it’s not actually that simple. To produce a mass of bulbs which flower for a prolonged period year on year requires thought and preparation. First, choose the right bulbs. Pick the largest, firmest bulbs you can find. Then plant them in a deep hole at least 8 inches / 20cm and preferably 10 inches / 25 cm deep, in small groups. Most people plant their daffs too near the surface. This means they’re likely to dry out. Dry bulbs lack the food and moisture required to build up reserves for the following year. This results in lots of grassy leaves and not many flowers.
Once the daffodils have flowered leave the foliage untouched for six weeks before shearing it off. This gives enough time for the bulbs to reabsorb nutrients from the leaves.
Unfortunately daffodil foliage is untidy stuff and in a small suburban garden it can be very unsightly. There are two ways around this… The first is to treat daffodils as annuals and plant them in potting compost in aquatic baskets among the other plants. Once the flowers have gone the basket may be dug up and the bulbs discarded on the compost heap. The second way is to plant dwarf varieties. That way you can enjoy the flowers without worrying about the foliage. Time to get planting!

Discover the legend of According to legend, during the 16th century, at the small hilltop town of Colle Sannita in Southern Italy, humble servants ‘invented’ a nourishing, tasty snack that was passed on to others who worked in the surrounding fields. This was made from the left-over meat and vegetables from the lavish banquets held by their Lord and master, Duke Carlo Iazeolla. The filling snack later became a source of sustenance that helped the poor people survive the severe bad weather and famine that swept across the region during the 17th century that became known as the ‘Century of Darkness’. Gradually the snack (still devoid of a name) and consisting of meat such as pork belly or beef rolled in bread dough, became more refined. It was adopted by the youngest brother of the Paschitti family who had built the first house on land in the nearby ancient village of Decorata. The lad had been fed the snack by his favourite uncle, Antonio Zeolla (nicknamed Zizi) and when he was old enough he inherited the recipe from his uncle and ... not knowing what to call the sandwich, simply gave it the name ‘Pane di Zizi’ (Uncle’s bread). This in time became known as the PANZINI. In the traditional Italian way, the recipe for the Panzini has been passed down through generations of the Paschitti family that now can be found living far away from their Italian origins in New York, Miami, the State of Ohio, London, Essex and ... yes, Milton Keynes ... where one branch of the family, the Zeolla’s own La Collina. Heel Pain…. your first step to being pain free! What causes heel pain? The heel is the largest of the 26 bones in the human foot. It is designed to provide a firm support for the weight of your body. The heel absorbs the impact when your feet hit the ground when walking and running, and it springs you forward ready for the next step. While walking, the stresses placed on your feet can be one-and-a-quarter times your body weight (this increases to two-and-three-quarters times when running). So it is not surprising that heel pain is common. Although heel pain can be mild and will sometimes disappear on its own, in some cases the pain persists and can become a chronic problem. Heel pain has a variety of different causes, although the most common is a condition called plantar fasciitis. For more information about this condition feel free to call 01908299272
What are the symptoms? Pain usually starts gradually without any injury to the area. Often it is triggered by wearing a flat shoe (e.g. flip flops on summer holidays). This stretches the plantar fascia (thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes) too far and begins the inflammation of the area. Typically, pain is felt under the foot towards the front of the heel. It is common for it to start in one heel only and normally it is most painful when standing up first thing in the morning. It can often ease with activity but then become more pronounced at the end of the day, or after a long time spent on your feet. What is plantar fasciitis? Plantar fasciitis is caused when the plantar fascia is strained beyond its normal extension. This causes the soft tissue fibres to stretch and become inflamed, often where it is attached to the heel bone (although it sometimes happens in the middle of the foot). This results in pain, often accompanied by a cramping of the calf muscles as tightness of the Achilles tendon is a major contributory factor. The underlying position of your foot is often to blame for this condition and therefore advice on shoes and insoles is important. A foot that flattens excessively on standing is called a ‘pronating’ foot and this needs to be corrected by using orthotic devices (these are special insoles or inserts to improve the way the foot functions). Plantar fasciitis is more common in people who spend all day on their feet in flat, unsupportive shoes or who are overweight. What is the treatment for heel pain? The best way to resolve heel pain is by doing several things at once: 1. Check your footwear: avoid flat, unsupportive shoes. 2. Stretch out the Achilles tendon and calf muscles. 3. Use insoles and orthotics to correct any foot faults and cushion and cradle the arch while it heals. 4. Use anti-inflammatory medication. If you are already taking medicines from your doctor please consult a pharmacist prior to taking any over the counter medicines. 5. You can buy heel pads in most good chemists and these will reduce the impact of walking. • Wear shoes that fit well and aren’t worn down on the heel or soles. • If you’re taking part in sports, wear appropriate shoes and warm up (and down) properly before exercising. • If the heel pain is associated with a particular shoe, avoid wearing that pair for a while. • Avoid walking barefoot on hard ground. Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.

Fireworks Family Fun The Milton Keynes Village bonfire and fireworks display takes place this year on Saturday October 26th, so put the date in your diary now! This event has always been a highlight for the local community, the number of people attending has grown significantly in the last few years, and it has become a real night to remember for all the family. Once again the display will be professionally fired by fireworks company Kimbolton, who were involved with both the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations and the Olympics in 2012, and will again be accompanied by a great music sound track to add to the whole experience. Refreshments and soft drinks will be available near the Village Hall, and of course the local Pavilion on the opposite side of the display field will also have food and drinks available to suit everyone.

Volunteers sell cakes, knitted garments, books & bric-a-brac & serve tea & coffee. There is a rota of helpers including able-bodied men to assist in putting up & taking down the tables.
