Here in Milton Keynes we often find ourselves teased due to the number of roundabouts you find and our 1970s architecture. What those who judge the MK Book by its cover miss though is the enormous sense of community we have within Milton Keynes. Considering the size of the city, the grid road system provides a unique set up and allows for a village style community within each grid square.
are trying to get donations of toiletries to form part of a pack for new comers arriving in Milton Keynes. You can find the collection point near the check outs in the store and I strongly recommend you keep an eye out all year round. Over the last year, Sainsbury’s stores collectively raised over £25.4 million for charities and community organisations. They also support local schools and clubs through Active Kids and local community groups-a huge support for many different people in MK. Other organisations which have I have been equally impressed by over the past years include the Barclays based in the city centre, where I attended a charity bake sale for. The Home Retail Group runs a scheme which allows workers to have days off in order to help in the local community with different projects, to name but one organisation. The community work which takes place, really does make a huge difference and I believe it makes our city a better place. Following on, I recently visited the Orbit Housing HQ in Milton Keynes, which is a charity for homeless people based in Fishermead. During my tour I was shown a picture of the House of Commons and on pointing my office out I realised many hadn’t visited. It was my great pleasure therefore to host a group from the charity at the Houses of Parliament last month and following on from their tour I took them for tea on the terrace.
Over the past 7 years as the MP, I am always struck by the great support offered to those in need by the community at a local level and I am very pleased to see that large corporate firms based here in MK are taking their commitment to social responsibility so seriously. During a recent visit to Sainsbury’s based in the Hub, which constituted part of one of my busy days going around our city, I learnt of the many ways they are currently trying to help our local charities. Each Sainsbury store sponsors a local charity, selected by customers and colleagues. This year Sainsbury’s has decided to help the Salvation Army, which has a local centre very close by to the store in Conniburrow. Throughout the year, the store will undertake various initiatives to raise money as well as raising the profile of the local charity within the community. At the moment they

Working in such an amazing building certainly makes it enjoyable to show people around and I am always delighted to have people down from the constituency. Should there be groups or individuals who have never been and would like to go, all you need do is contact me. With the days growing shorter and the nights colder, I am assured following my visits over the past month that there are plenty of people ready to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. I would urge you all to keep an eye out at your local supermarkets for opportunities to donate and would also ask you to see what scheme your work offers you to engage with the local community. The photo, probably by Mr Sayle of 19 St John Street, showing Rodwell’s thatched cottage which can be seen in a few local history books. Just for fun - can anyone see a difference in my photo, to the original other published old photos showing this scene. Judging by the car, the photo could have been taken from circa 1911 to 1946 when the thatched cottage was destroyed by fire. However, Michael Pratt’s postcard has a postage date of 1928.
The old Thatched Cottage next to the Smithy was thought to have dated back to the 12th century. The home of William (& son Robert) Rodwell, William being a Methodist Lay Preacher who I have written about before. In Alfred Bullard’s writings, he claims the old Cottage was one of the oldest buildings in the town at least 600 years old? He goes on to say, having visited it after the fire, “The half timbered front is almost as sound as the day it was made. It was filled with wattle and daub with rushes and chopped straw mixed. The original old chimney was built of almost loose stone. In addition, the old timbered front would (he claims) resist a team of horses to pull it to pieces. The method of building these old timber-framed houses that had been rendan (Split) and not sawn, was as follows: - “The principal and straightest pieces were all laid on the ground and other less straight pieces were also assembled, and then the whole front was thenmarked where the mortises and the pieces which were tenoned, and able to fit into the mortises. When all this had been done, the whole of it was temporarily put together before it was erected, each

piece being marked, then the holes were drilled through the mortises and tenons, and a strong oak peg driven in. They lasted for hundreds of years and will resist more heat than metal” Mr Bullard said? One of my own earliest recollections of the old Smithy site was Bill Richardson who cleared the ground and erected a prefabricated bungalow in just a few weeks. It was the talk of the entire town, relating to how fast it was erected. The Bungalow Number 30 still there today but now built with brick. The Houses and the Shop on the left (number 29) Demolished in the early 1970s. Mr & Mrs Bowyer owned the shop in 1949 prior to the Lockwood’s The Lockwood’s owned the Shop Number 29 sometime during the 1950s. I remember the Lockwood’s in The Pioneers, the Local Amateur dramatics group; David the son, was also a goodswimmer for the Town’s Swimming Club. No 31 was Lineham’s Hosiery and Outfitting Stores later to become Jim Atack Licensed Betting Office. Prior to this in 1749, I see Dennis has this property number 31 referred to as the House of John Dixie. After this old place comes the Bull 33 Tickford Street. 1925 Electoral Register 33 Tickford St, William Healey (The Bull) From the mid 1940s to the mid1970s kept by Reg and Vera Litchfield.

Kolkata Food Review We wanted to try a new Indian restaurant for dinner so started to do some hunting around and we came across the Kolkata in Newport Pagnell High Street.

Well, the delights just keep coming. Our starters of a Mixed Meat collaboration comprised of Tikka, Chops, Sheek Kebab and Tandoori Chicken, a melt in the mouth sensation, beautifully cooked.
After finding the details online at www. kolkatadining.co.uk we had a look through the extensive menu, and found exactly what we were looking for - easy. Making the call to order our food was a pleasure. With the food ordered I shot into Newport Pagnell, did some bits and went to pick up the food, all within half an hour. To my surprise the food was presented to me in an easy carry cardboard box, with no danger of a
On arriving home, I opened the box of delights and was faced with piping hot, beautiful Indian home cooked food.
Not being great fans of very spicy food this was the perfect combination. Our mains were just as good, with a Chicken Korma and a Chicken Tikka Masala, both cooked with a good amount of meat and accompanied by perfectly cooked rice. The flavours that came from the food as we ate were delicious. Having had a few curry meals in my time, this was one of the best. If that were not enough the Naan bread we had was also cooked to perfection and not a limp tasteless offering as we have had before. One of the main things we have always judged an Indian meal on is the amount of oil left swimming around the plate. Well to our pleasant surprise we are not left with a pool of oil, nor did we have that sometimes found greasy feeling after finishing the meal. As we sat back to enjoy the evening and satisfied feeling we had from our fabulous dinner I was compiled to write this in hope others will take the opportunity to enjoy the takeaway food offered by the Kolkata.

Guide lines for planting new fruit trees Maurice Rust, Frosts Garden Centre, Woburn Sands
Go into any fruit shop of supermarket, you will find the shelves full of English grown apples and pears at this time of year. Your thoughts may turn to ‘growing your own’. If you only have a small garden or allotment growing an apple or a pear tree is not a problem as their many forms and ways that fruit trees can be grown. If you have lots of space then the most obvious choice is to plant a ‘Half standard tree’ where the head of the tree will be grown at the top of the trunk about 120 to 150 centimetres off the ground (4 to 5ft). A bush fruit tree is when the head of the tree is grown on a short trunk in the region of a metre (36 inches) or less. Fan fruit trees are when the branches are grown equally spaced in the shape of a flat fan. Fan shaped fruit trees are grown to be planted against a wall or garden fence. Espalier or horizontal fruit trees are where the branches are grown either side of the main stem and are usually 30 cm (12 inches) apart. Normally these are purchased with two or three layers of branches, however over time you can develop other layers of branches depending on what are your requirements. On some very old properties you can find them as high as the eaves of the house with many layers of fruiting bearing branches. Corden fruit trees is where the fruit is grown on a single stem planted at an angle of 45 degrees, these are traditionally planted in a row supported by wires spaced 120 centimetres (4ft) apart to form a hedge. Triple-corden fruit trees are usually grown with three upright stems growing off a short lateral growing branch either side of a short trunk usually 30centimetres high (12 inches). Also available in this method of growing fruit trees are what is known as a double ‘U’ corden with four upright growing stems or a ‘U’ corden where two upright stems are grown. Step Over fruit trees, these are lateral growing stems grown either side of short trunk 30 centimetres high (12inches) and are usually grown on the edge of the garden plot to form a small hedge that you just ‘step’ over. Family fruit trees are grown with three compatible pollinating varieties on a short trunk.

Root stocks Apples are grafted on to different root stocks depending on how high you wish your fruit tree to grow. Some varieties are weak growing varieties so they are grafted on to a strong growing rootstock whilst other varieties need to be slowed down a little. The following is a simple guide. On apple tree labels you will often see M27 or M9 this means that the root stock was originally grown at the East Malling Research Station in Kent. For ‘Very dwarf’ growing fruit trees M27 growing less than 2 metres high (6ft), (these can also be grown in large containers. Dwarf M9 growing just over metres high (8 ft), Semi Dwarf M26 growing 3 metres high ((9ft), MM106 growing 4 metres high (12ft). Pears are grown on just one root stock which is known as Quince C that generally grows around 3 metres high (9ft).
Pollination This subject is often made unnecessarily complicated. This brief outline will hopefully be of some assistance. Most fruit trees are planted in close proximity of other gardens so activity of bees and other insects is helped by such close planting. All apples and pears flower at different periods, over the years Research Stations have been able to place varieties into different groups and ranked 1,2,3,4, and 5. Number ‘one’ being a early flowering apple and ‘five’ being very late flowering apples, so that providing you plant two fruits of the same number or for eg. 3 and 4 the flowering periods overlap and they will ‘cross pollinate’. To help you select suitable pollinating varieties on plant labels each fruit tree you should find the variety marked as either 1,2,3,4, or 5. Some varieties are ‘Self fertile varieties’, this means that the flowers will pollinate with the pollen from other flowers on from the same tree. On plant labels these varieties are marked ‘SF’. Triploid varieties – there are a few varieties of apples that are marked ‘Triploid’, in simple terms they are poor pollinators therefore they need planting with two other pollinating varieties. Small businesses will lead the way in 2012, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2012, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2011. Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way. “Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business.

Lower Back Pain Back pain plagues many of us. A whopping 8 out of 10 people get back pain at some point in their lives, equating to 80% of the population according to the NHS, and in the years of 2010 and 2011, 7.6 million working days were lost due to back ache. Back pain has various causes, from plain old stress, to the more serious causes, like a fractured vertebrae or a herniated disc. This article focuses solely on the least serious cause of back pain, one which has no obvious cause, and for this reason, is referred to as “non-specific back pain.” Non-specific back pain usually presents as pain in the area at the base of the spine. It can start after exercise, or it could come on slowly, over a period of months. This kind of back pain is not usually associated with any kind of fall or trauma. The pain doesn’t radiate to other part of the body, that is to say, it stays local to the spine. Exceptions!! There are always exceptions to the rule and here are two of them: If you have lost the ability to control your bowels or bladder, you will need to seek medical assistance as a matter of emergency. If you have a fever and your urine smells funny, you may have a kidney infection, see your GP. So what’s going on? In the case of non-specific back pain, the pain you are feeling is likely to come from the muscles, not the bones. Your muscles are tense, due to being over-used from either sitting or standing for long periods of time. This state of tension is what is causing the pain. Fig 1. The image shows the muscles as viewed from the back. I have removed the opposing muscle of each pair so that you can see all the different muscles. All these muscles are responsible for bending the body from side to side and, more crucially, extending the spine. In short, they help you sit and stand up straight. It is likely to be these muscles which are tense and causing pain. So what do you do about it? Your doctor may well offer you pain killers and antiinflammatories to deal with the pain. If the pain persists, or if you want to be rid of it more quickly, then consider seeing a physiotherapist, osteopath or chiropractor. They will treat the muscles causing the pain. I personally have treated many lower back problems with some startling results. There are exercises which may also help, and I plan to write more about this in later articles.
