Christmas Fair at the Christmas Lights in Newport Pagnell Newport Pagnell’s historic Parish Church of St Peter’s and St Paul’s is hosting an all-day Christmas Fair on Saturday, November 24th from 10am. Inside the church, you’ll find stalls selling gifts, books, cards, jigsaw puzzles, hats & handbags, crafts, toys, cakes, bric-abrac, a raffle and as well as a tombola or two. It will be no surprise to those who know that my family run a fireworks factory, that November is one of my favourite months. It always seems to go off with a bang and I have particularly fond memories as a boy, setting up the fireworks here in Campbell Park in the city. To this day we all still enjoy the firework spectacular, this year held on the 4th November, and the fair which is bought along with it. However, November also has another relevance for me, as it does for many others, in my role as a serving Territorial Army Officer. This year is no different as I intend to sell poppies in Olney and attend various events to commemorate Armistice Day around our city. While personally I find it important to remember those I have served with, I believe it is vital that as a country we pay tribute to those who have died for us and I was particularly pleased to hear of the Prime Minister’s intentions to remember the centenary of World War One. Conflict comes with so many costs and giving school children the opportunity to see the battle fields where so many fell, can only help to remind them of the human cost which comes so dearly. One of the motivating factors for me getting involved in politics was my belief that more should be done to resolve disputes before resorting to conflict and so I am deeply supportive of the commemoration. To coin a famous Churchill phrase, ‘jaw jaw is better than war war’. The past month saw me going around the constituency showing support to different causes. Breast Cancer Awareness week took place in October and I was delighted to join Screenetics based in Linford Wood, who produce breast checking kits to make it easier for people to feel for lumps. The kits are available at Lloyds Pharmacies nationally and have been really successful to date. Men are just as susceptible to breast cancer as women and 1 in 3 of us will get cancer at some point in our lives. These startling statistics go some

way to explain why it is so important we do check ourselves and I would urge you all to keep an eye out for the Screenetics kit. Another worthy cause which I took great pleasure in supporting was the World Milk Day. I visited North Crawley School and was delighted to hear about how the school are giving milk to their pupils in order to encourage them to drink more of it. With a rise in cases of osteoporosis, there is no doubt that encouraging young children to drink milk can go some way to help make stronger bones and I was really pleased to see so many children enjoying “the white stuff”! I also visited Tesco to support their Schools Voucher campaign. Last year, 79 schools in the North of Milton Keynes claimed over £23,000 worth of equipment from the scheme. Impressively, Tesco have been running a voucher scheme since they launched Computers for schools in 1992 and have subsequently given over £185 million worth of a range of equipment to schools across the UK. I was really impressed to see that so many of our schools here in Milton Keynes had been benefiting directly from our shopping and I will be making sure I continue to keep hold of my vouchers. Saint John Street and the Marquis of Chandos 1956 It is impossible for me to replicate the image exactly. I would need to put myself in the middle of the road to be a 100% accurate. Getting in more of number 19 St John Street (Roy Pinks) but the traffic situation not allowing me this indulgence. The Francis Frith collection of photos taken of the town is to my knowledge 32 images taken during the 1950s. This one digitally enhanced by myself ©. To some this was thought to be an improvement. It certainly changed and opened up this old street but in many ways the street has lost some of its character.
The concurrence being that what was number 29 is now 19, Roy Pinks Cycles. The last of the modern numbered premises is 21 around the corner, a gym. In the older St John Street there were once buildings numbered to 39, being Compton’s on the corner of Riverside. So in the demolition we have lost 6 numbered properties, the Library takingup possibly at least three of them. The Library is not numbered at all, the address being St John Street, Newport Pagnell, MK16 8HQ. If these old properties could have been saved, it can be imagined the quaint “Olde Worlde” shops that could have enticed visitors into the town, letting people enjoy the history of these old buildings. It can be seen what was accomplished with the numbers opposite, such as 30 and 32, “The Old Vicarage” and the other even numbers giving the street some olden day character. However it was not to be, the traffic through the town considered to be more important. The lady pushing the pram up St John Street, is Mrs Tole who lived at 3 Priory Street. with two of her daughters Joan and Lynn
Reproduction of Saint John Street 13th Nov 2011 I hope today these mostly old ‘probable’ 1700s houses would have had a conservation order put on to them, therefore maintaining the street’s Georgian character. During the 1950’s the Iron Bridge is seen painted a dark green colour which, in my opinion, is better than the dismal black colour which is seen today. The Marquis of Chandos at 29 St John Street was opposite the Unionist Club (number 28) and along the westerly side of the Marquis of Chandos was Church Passage, which lay opposite the Tudor building, number 26 St John Street. Piriformis syndrome Piriformis syndrome occurs when the Piriformis muscle inflames and places pressure on the sciatic nerve as it runs from the sacrum and into the leg. The Piriformis muscle is a pear shaped muscle found in, well, in the bum. It attaches to the sacrum and extends across, and under the gluteus maximus, to the greater trochanter of the femur. The sciatic nerve passes directly under this muscle as it leaves the sacrum and travels through the buttocks and into the leg. The image shows the location of the Piriformis and its attachment points, as well as the relative position of the sciatic nerve. Therefore, if this muscle gets damaged or inflamed, it will press on the sciatic nerve, causing pain in the buttocks and down the path of the sciatic nerve, which is down the back of the leg. Pain down the back of your leg is called sciatica. The Piriformis has two functions, depending on what you are doing with your legs at the time. If you are standing, Piriformis is used to turn the entire leg outwards, pointing your toes to the side. If you are sitting, then it is used to open your leg outwards.
Lower back problems can also cause Piriformis syndrome. This is another compensatory reaction which occurs when the Piriformis tenses to protect against pain in the lower back and decreased, or altered gait.
How do you get Piriformis syndrome?
Do I need to worry?
One of the most common causes is sitting at a desk, or driving for long periods of time. This causes the muscles which bend the legs at the hip (flexors) to shorten or become tense. As a compensatory measure, the opposing muscles (the extensors) become tense too. The tension in the extensors can cause the Piriformis to spasm, causing pain
Not with Piriformis syndrome no. It is a muscle imbalance which can be corrected fairly easily with some deep tissue work and exercises.
Overusing the Piriformis muscle can cause it to become damaged and tension will arise from this. Exercises like cycling, or other seated sports like rowing, can cause damage by using the muscle to much, also known as a muscle strain. Another common cause of Piriformis syndrome arises from a stiffening or looseness of the sacroilliac joint. The sacro-illiac joint is a joint between the sacrum and the ilium in the pelvis. This problem will be discussed further in later articles.

Small businesses will lead the way in 2012, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2012, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2011. In the 7th century a monk from Credition in Devon went to Germany to teach the Word of God, it is said that he did a lot of good works......and spent much of his time in Thuringia, an area which was to become the Cradle of the Christmas Decoration Industry. Legend has it that the triangular shape of the Fir Tree is said to describe the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Converted people began to revere the fir tree as God’s Tree as they had previously revered the oak tree. By the 12th century it was being hung, upside-down from ceilings at Christmas time in central Europe, as a symbol of Christianity. In the early 16th century Martin Luther is said to have decorated a small Christmas Tree with candles to show his children how stars twinkled through the dark night It is well known that Prince Albert introduced the German custom of decorating a Fir trees at Christmas to this Country for Queen Victoria following their first Christmas at Windsor Castle in the middle of the 19th century.
Buying a real Christmas Tree – buy early There is no advantage in last minute shopping for a Christmas tree, many people think that the nearer they buy a Christmas Tree to the big day the fresher the tree will be and last longer – this is not true. Because of the vast quantities of Christmas trees sold growers have to cut the trees several weeks in advance, so any trees bought on Christmas Eve are no fresher than the trees bought in late November. Another reason to buy early is that towards the middle of December trees bought then have been standing around for a month or more - getting damaged as people tend to ‘pick’ over many trees before making their final choice.
Christmas trees to drop their needles. Another very similar variety of Christmas tree is the Serbian Spruce known as Picea omorika, this narrow growing tree is densely needled with attractive two-toned coloured foliage and is an ideal choice if you only have a narrow space for a Christmas Tree. In recent years the Christmas tree trade has been dominated by the introduction of the Nordmann Fir – Abies nordmanniana - the Danish Christmas tree, this striking tree is known for its needle holding properties, several weeks after they are cut. The needles is sweetly scented and are soft bluish green above and silver beneath - reasonably soft to touch ideal if you have small children. The Noble Fir – Abies procea is the variety of Fir tree used in America for Christmas trees, this variety is now becoming very popular in this Country, it is always more expensive to buy because it is more difficult to produce and takes longer to grow, the foliage is dark green and is unbeatable for colour and its pleasant fragrance. Most Christmas trees are sold as ‘cut’ trees - in other words cut off the root just above ground level. If you select a cut Christmas tree as soon as you get home ‘saw’ 2/3 centimetres off the base of your tree and stand it for as long as possible in a bucket of fresh water, leave outside for as long as possible before decorating. Erect your tree in a holder that will hold some water whilst indoors so that you can water it regularly. Some trees are sold containerised. Some small Christmas trees may have been grown in a container for all its life and if not kept indoors too long over the Christmas period may grow if planted in the garden after Christmas. Tall container trees are often fir trees that have been dug up in early November and potted into containers to sell on, these trees will struggle to grow in the garden as their roots have been damaged when lifted and potted.

Weaving Webs! To enhance the children’s knowledge and understanding of the world, one of our first topics of the academic year was called ‘weave & spin’. The children learnt all about how spiders live and how they spin their webs. Everyone enjoyed watching a short film, brought into pre-school by a member of staff, showing a spider spinning its web. All the children were taught the words and hand actions to the rhyme Incy Wincy Spider and they practiced with a lot of enthusiasm! Finally, the children had great fun in the garden having a go at creating their own
