Geneva Motor Show Reviewed March 2014

his month we visited the Geneva Motor Show so thought we would share some of the fantastic new cars that were launched there this year.
This is still one of the biggest Motor Shows in the world and only a 2 hour flight from Luton, it’s a must for all motoring enthusiasts. It has been going since 1905 (so they know what they’re doing!!), and attracts over three
quarters of a million people over 11 days. This year saw world debuts of the Mercedes S-Class Coupe, C-class, Lamborghini Huracan, Audi TT, and Citroen C1, along with the face lifted Nissan Juke plus loads more. Where there’s a Will…
W
ho would you go to if you needed heart surgery?
Would you download some information from the internet and have a go yourself? Or perhaps go to that place in town that offers cheap operations? Perhaps buy a DIY kit? No, of course not. You’d see a professional surgeon. Someone who is qualified and knows what they’re doing. So, wouldn’t you go to a professional when you want to make a Will or a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)? Because they could be the most important documents you will ever sign. If Wills or LPAs are not done properly, this will not be discovered until they have to be used, when it’ll be too late. If your Will is wrong or possibly totally invalid, you won’t be around to correct it. The number of Wills contested in the Courts almost doubled between 2006 and 2011, partly due to the increase in Wills that were ‘homemade’, not properly drawn up or not witnessed correctly.
Anyone can set up as a “will writer” Unfortunately, anyone can sell Wills and LPAs, without any formal qualifications, experience, insurance or even any training. If you’re looking for someone to prepare a Will for you, do check carefully to make sure that it’s someone who is properly qualified and insured. A solicitor, for example, like a doctor, has to pass rigorous examinations and undergo years of training before being allowed to practise, will be regulated and must be insured.
Why make a Will? Although there are statutory rules that apply if someone dies without making a Will, they don’t always work in the way that
you would expect. Even a spouse or civil partner may not inherit everything. Apart from providing for children financially, who would you want to take care of them as they grow up? If you leave no instructions, or there is a family dispute, a Court may have to decide.
How much does it cost? My fees are clearly stated and there are no “hidden extras”. I’ll personally oversee signing and witnessing to make sure everything is done properly and even visit you at home if it’s more convenient for you. MP Mark Lancaster has expressed his delight at a historic vote in Parliament to classify the plant known as Khat as a class C drug. Khat is a plant grown in Kenya and chewed mainly by the East African Community in the UK. It contains the banned substances Cathine and Cathinone and the UK is the only Western European country not to have banned the plant to date. The vote came despite opposition from Liberal Democrats on the committee who voted against a ban. Mark was a member of the Committee when the House of Commons voted to endorse the Home Secretary’s decision last July to ban the drug. Mark has been campaigning to reclassify the drug after receiving requests from his Somali constituents. They were concerned at the impact the drug was having on social cohesion and the family breakdown in Milton Keynes. Police enforcement will take the form of an initial caution followed by a £60 fine for drug users with stronger fines and risk of imprisonment for dealers. After the vote Mark said; “I am pleased that the Committee, with the exception of the Liberal Democrats, supported the Home Secretary’s decision to ban Khat. I know that this will be welcomed by many in the Somali community across the UK. We need to be sensitive as the ban is brought in and I look forward to engaging with the community and police as to how this can be best achieved.”

MP gets behind the wheel of the Volkswagen e-up! Mark Lancaster MP received a warm welcome from the team at Volkswagen Group UK in Blakelands, where he was also invited to test drive an e-up!, Volkswagen’s newly launched electric city car. Once at his destination, Mark commented that the e-up! was very comfortable, despite his 6’ frame and he was amazed at how quiet and responsive it was. The Government’s recent investment in plug–in points in Milton Keynes is a reflection of the increasing acceptance of electric vehicles, but the industry is fully aware that it will take time for the public’s confidence to grow in the new technology. The test drive took Mark to Volkswagen Group UK’s National Learning Centre in Wymbush, where every year over 740 apprentices attend 1-3 year training programmes to develop their skills in a number of roles from product advisors to service technicians. Mark said, “I am delighted that an international company such as Volkswagen Group has recognised Milton Keynes as a place to do business, providing employment for up to 2,000 local people and offering exceptional training facilities for its employees”.

ay ‘clematis’ and most people will think of the large, purple-flowered, “Jackmanii” or the rampant, bronze-leafed, pinkflowered montana rubens. I have nothing against either of these, but whenever I pass by a house and spot yet another one scrambling up a tatty trellis tacked to the wall, I have to fight the urge to knock on the front door and give what my husband refers to as my ‘clematis lecture’. Clematis is not known as the ‘Queen of Climbers’ for nothing. It can be utterly spectacular and should not be relegated to trellis. It can used for covering fences and arbours, old tree stumps, sheds and even in beds and borders. Choose wisely and you can have flowers from early spring until late autumn. The flowers of the texensis hybrids look like finely cut bells. “Etoile Rose” is a beautiful dark pink edged with paler pink and “Princess of Wales” is a beautiful rosy red. Both of these will scramble through

shrubs and flower all summer. They die back in winter so can be tidied up then. Viticella hybrids produce flowers which look like little pixie hats as they open. “Minuet” has purple and white flowers suspended on fine stems while “Purpurea Plena Elegans” produces double blooms which open into little purple rosettes. Clematis prefers its feet in the shade and its head in the sun. Make sure the plant’s roots are shaded: pieces of broken flagstone are ideal, or an old cracked upside-down terracotta pot with the bottom knocked out. When clematis is happy it will flower prolifically. Large-flowered clematis tend to produce a second flush in the autumn, but others like tangutica and orientalis wait to flower until then. Both of these are very vigorous and are great for covering unsightly sheds or old trees. Finally, if you have a sheltered spot against a wall try cirrhosa balearica. This is a beautiful, winter-flowering variety with ferny foliage and pale-green flowers spotted with crimson.

Small businesses will lead the way in 2014, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people

Milton Keynes will boom in 2014, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2013.
Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way. “Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business. “As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”

Korfball is a bit like netball and bit like basketball - but better!* It’s played in mixed sex teams of 4 men and 4 women on a court similar sized to basketball. Korfball is played indoors during the winter and outdoors during the summer. The aim of the game is to work with your team-mates to get the ball through the hoop (Korf) Men can only mark men and women can only mark women and unlike netball, you can’t shoot if your defender is within touching distance of you – so you need to move quick!
