MP’s Diary

Last month saw Milton Keynes land firmly on the map. Not only was MK named as a host city for the 2015 Rugby World Cup but planning permission was granted for a band new National Badminton, we trended on twitter nationally as #LoveMK became a phenomenon and the Minister for Cities visited us to see for himself what has made us such a great place to live and work. Greg Clark MP, the First Secretary of the Treasury and also the Minister for Cities, visited Milton Keynes to hear from the council about their bid to be part of the City Deal.
Places for People, who have recently been voted Housebuilder of the Year in the prestigious Building Magazine Awards, have a reputation of ensuring the growth of areas are organic and Brooklands did not disappoint. I know the Minister was very impressed with what he saw across the eastern expansion area and left with a very positive impression. I have also had cause to contact the Secretary of State for Health this month following the closure of the Willen Health Centre. The closure is still shrouded in mystery and having been given a petition by residents to get it reopened; I presented it to the Health Secretary and also asked him to find some answers for us.
Because of the speed at which MK has been growing the government are keen to get us on to the scheme and the Minister came to see firsthand the good things we have been doing up here The City Deal would see further powers devolved locally (and additional funds to support this) in order to have more localised decisions made to encourage even further local growth. One of Milton Keynes’ strength is the importance we place on infrastructure being in place before the expansion of areas, which is to the council’s credit. I took Greg to the Brooklands site, near the M1 to see firsthand the “I before E” principle in action.
It has obviously been a worrying time for patients and staff of the surgery and while I am pleased that they have all been allocated new practices, I am concerned that there are still no answers as to why this happened. I am looking forward to the Secretary of State’s response to the petition and letter, I sincerely hope we can find a positive outcome to all this. On a more positive note, Thames Valley Police were able to announce a reduction in reported crime across the area this month. With so much hard work going in to tackling crime and also the causes of crime by both the police and other partner agencies, I am extremely pleased to see it paying off. We have so much to celebrate here in MK and while things sometimes go array I am confident we can overcome them by working together. It’s estimated that around seven million people make car journeys for UK holidays during bank holidays and the summer months. Waging war! Those of you who read this piece regularly know that I am committed to organic gardening. My little plot is a gentle selfsustaining ecosystem. But this month I’m a woman at war and my weapon of choice is biological warfare! Of course I don’t use anthrax and Hantavirus, my favourite biological control is the humble ladybird. These little aphid munchers can chomp their way through 5000 greenfly during their year-long lifespan! Even their larvae, which are long and black with orange spots, are voracious aphid-eaters. Beautiful lacewings produce larvae which eat up to 300 aphids before they become adults and go on to scoff more. And don’t swat that wasp! It too has a taste for greenfly so tell yourself it’s only protecting your roses. Birds are brilliant biological allies. Thrushes love to eat slugs and snails. Unfortunately they are particularly susceptible to slug-bait poison based on methiocarb so it really is best to avoid that particular poison at all costs. Some manufacturers claim that blue pellets deter them but this is not necessarily true. You also run the risk of poisoning predatory beetles which would naturally feast on slugs. I’m not keen on chemical warfare in the garden in general but this particular chemical is really vicious and best left alone. Learn to like frogs and toads. They’re great slugeaters. Encourage them with a tiny pond. Don’t worry that you won’t have room: even a bucket sunk into the ground will work. And surely everyone loves hedgehogs. They eat lots of garden pests. They’re quite shy and secretive so provide them with a pile of logs to hide under, or invest in a hedgehog house.

There are many handsome ones about, though if you’re handy with tools you could probably make one yourself. The big new thing in biological pest control in recent years has been the arrival of pre-packed nematodes and mites. Nematodes are tiny parasites which are watered on to the problem area when the soil temperature is 10C or greater. They enter the pest and reproduce inside it, killing it in the process. They are then released back into the soil when the pest dies ready to infect new pests. There are nematodes to target slugs, vine weevils and ants. Predatory mites are also available to target red spider mite and thrips (thunderflies). Nematodes and mites have the advantage of targeting a particular pest very specifically without causing damage to the environment.

Newport Pagnell Summer Fete 2013
This year’s fete is on Saturday, June 29th from 10am to 2pm.The church has got the bunting ready, and the organisers are busy planning another bargain packed event for this summer. There will be the usual mix of crafts, puzzles, bric-a-brac, toys, tombola and raffle. Our famed cake stall will be well stocked with goodies to buy and take away with you.
The secondhand book stall, containing several hundred items arranged across the pews, is always a popular spot to browse and buy. When you are ready for the refreshments, they’ll be a splendid choice of delicious cakes from which to choose. The Summer Fete takes place in the Parish Church on the High Street and it will be one occasion this summer not dependant on the weather, so put a note in your diaries and come along to this popular family event. Your Questions Answered Q: We have an employee who has three young children, all under the age of five, and who is continuously taking time off because one or other of the children is ill. Do we have to give them time off if they are unable to arrange childcare? A: All employees have a statutory right to a “reasonable” period of time off to care for dependents under Section 57A of the Employment Rights Act 1996. However, there is no obligation on the employer to pay an employee for this time. A “dependant” for the purposes of this right is a spouse, civil partner, child, parent or a person who lives in the same household as the employee (who is not an employee, tenant, lodger or boarder). right applies where an employee has no option but to take time off work to take necessary action because of the unexpected disruption to or cessation of arrangements for the care of the dependant such as a school or nursery being closed because of the snow for example. How long is “reasonable” is a question of fact and degree in each individual case. The employee is required to inform the employer of the reason for the absence as soon as reasonably possible and how long it is anticipated to last. Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.
“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”
Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way.
