POSITIVE LIVING You are worth so much more than you know…

Where you are now is where you should be. You chose it yourself bit by bit with actions and decisions you’ve dismissed or activated along your unfolding timeline. You are in charge of what you do or don’t do every moment. Why would you believe any different? You have a place in society and in your family, that’s entirely unique. Without you there would be a hole, like a tear in a net, like a missing piece in a puzzle. You have a distinct role to play in the ‘present’, the now time that you have in your custody. You are a much needed link for life, time and others to connect to. You’ve set the scene and the pace, and you’re now playing the part of your choice. But do you ever stop to look around and take stock of what is actually playing out in real time? Do you ever step out of your story to see life from a different perspective, as though you could look in from the outside, to see what others see and expect or get from you, not from illusion or ego but in truth? Do you ever take a second glance at what it is that you’re actually creating? During youth we are so busy learning and building that we barely have time to sit still. The life we live seems to happen of its own accord and we simply have to show up - to keep up. Then we’re set free. The world is ours to sample or partake as we wish. Sometimes we go crazy, but sometimes we are like fish in a pond. We move and grow within the parameters of what we know – or think we should do, rather than from the understanding that we are free to choose anything. Yet what is your journey about? What are you creating? Why do you choose all you do? (I am I) The truth is that you probably don’t know, that you’ve built up a pattern of things you always do, so you do them. You don’t push any limits. You’re just getting by… But is that enough? Is what you have built so far - your soul reason for being? Yes, you now have commitments, but even those you either chose or fell into. You are responsible for your children until they are grown; you work to pay bills

and to be able to live as you choose; but again, what is your life really about? What do you do with your time? What will you take with you as your proudest attainment, what will be your personal offering back to life? At this point some people feel down – but you mustn’t. You should be glad that you’re addressing this now, while you still have the opportunity to do something about it. Anything! Whatever you choose to be or to do, or just want to give back, will be adequate. Your best effort will always be sufficient, for at least there’ll be movement… Don’t doubt that you can do it, or that you might not be good enough. Just have a go, simply try… You have a chance to be the person you wish… (I am I) Life is a gift. It’s not really very long once you’ve put into place things like family, work and building your home. In youth you probably had desires and dreams about what life would be like, of what you wanted to be, do or sample. Perhaps you should try to remember. Don’t live your desires out through your children; do them yourself – for they are your dreams – not theirs. They’ll have their own, built up through a mixture of your thoughts and theirs. They have different things to accomplish and do, with different triggers and goals to reach also. The greatest gifts you can give them are freedom and independence; the freedom to be themselves, meaning mistakes they’ll make too, under the loving safety net of the family umbrella that you’ve so far created. Give to yourself the same love and consideration… Be patient and kind, not angry and down on your achievements and body. Take as long as you need to rekindle. Begin to slowly rethink and redraw the fortress you have steadfastly built. Once all basic needs have been met, look around, begin to expand and explore. This is a huge world, and you can see, use and try whatever you wish, just be kind to whomever you meet and enjoy all the things you’ll encounter. (I am I) Your life is not over – it’s just in a place of change and transition. A whole new chapter is dawning – and you too birthed to become part of it… (I am I) Are you ready to unleash your true potential?

MP’s Diary

By Mark Lancaster, MP for Milton Keynes North

There has been much discussion around changes in our city over the past few weeks. In particular there have been some large planning applications which would see more houses being built and with that new schools, doctors surgeries and other key infrastructure. I have always been an advocate of the “I before E” principle, infrastructure before expansion and believe strongly it is key that it is maintained as we grow larger as a city.

What I find so impressive is the way local voluntary organisations cope with the rapid rate at which we expand. I recently visited STaSS, a city wide HIV Charity, offering support and assistance to those who suffer from the disease. Giving both emotional and practical help, STaSS and their volunteers ensure people with HIV don’t feel alienated from our community. With a high level of undetected HIV prevalent in Milton Keynes STaSS not only works with people who are HIV positive, but also offers HIV tests for free across the city. I was pleased to be able to have a test practiced on me and would urge others to do the same-you don’t even see the needle! Another organisation which is coping with the increase demand for its service is the Food Bank. Offering food

and other goods to those most in need, the local Food Bank is simply invaluable. I was pleased to be able to go and help stack the shelves and put together food parcels for a morning recently and was impressed by the amount of donations made. It is a great example of how we are supporting each other in our community but need is great and so donations are always appreciated. Our Food Bank has a great website which tells you what goods are most needed and how you can make a financial contribution. You can view it at www. mkfoodbank.org.uk . With MK being a sporting city I enjoyed trying out a sport, not usually associated with Milton Keynes, by joining the team down at Haversham Sailing Club. With courses available for novices (especially youngsters over the school holidays) and race days held regularly on weekends, it really is a blast. I thoroughly enjoyed being taken out on a dingy, feeling the wind in hair and the clubhouse bar afterwards was also good fun. With the weather having been so good, I would strongly recommend people explore it as a new sport and get in touch with the club.

The closure of the Chamber of Commerce in Milton Keynes a few months ago was met with great sadness with all who were associated with it. It was therefore with great delight I met with Paul Griffiths who has set up an entirely new organisation, accredited by the British Chamber of Commerce-Milton Keynes Chamber. We have the largest number of small businesses in the country and have been named as the best place to do business outside of London in the UK so there is no doubt there is a need for such an important asset to businesses. Paul , who has been Chief Executive of the very successful Northampton Chamber of Commerce for some time, has already signed up many local businesses, big and small, in MK who will benefit from HR advice, briefings and other support. I am looking forward to working closely with him and the new Chamber. As always, if I can be of any assistance to you or you would like me to visit your organisation then please contact me on 01908 686830.

The New Citroen DS3 Cabrio Reviewed 03/08/13

Citroen DS3 Goes Topless I have to say at first I wasn’t sure about this car as it’s like a half convertible but it did grow on me.

The DS3 has been a massive success for Citroen. They have really gone after the Mini and Audi A1 market, and with its great looks and drive, there’s no surprise they have shifted 36,000 of them in the UK alone. So it is only natural they have now come out with a Cabrio model - there is currently only a 1.6 petrol version but they are releasing a diesel later on in the year. I tested the 1.6 THP 155 in a D-sport model and it was a good spec with a very nippy engine. The main negative is that when the roof is down full, you can’t see behind you, but the positives definitely out way the bad; like you can sit 3 people in the back (which is unusual on a soft top) and the boot is great when the roof is up, so ideal for the school runs if you can live with putting the seat up every time someone gets in the back as its only comes in a 3dr. You can still personalise your DS3 with different coloured roofs and mirrors to the car, and you can

even get purple leather if you’re that way inclined! The drive is very smooth and quiet, and with a great stereo with bluetooth, & lots of gloss and stainless steel, the inside feels like a real quality car. It even has a button in the car you can press and call Citroen if you have a problem with the car or you have broken down and it will connect you directly to Citroens help line!! The diesel will be the one to look out for as the petrol version is a bit thirsty and if you can, stretch to the D-sport + that comes with nice little extras like leather as standard. MPH = 47.9 Combined Top speed =132 0-60 =8.2 CO2=137 On the road price £19,136 (Lease price £199+vat over 2 years with 6 payments up front based on 10k miles a year)

Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.

“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”

Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way.

Bucks Biz, with units all over Milton Keynes, is renowned for straight talking and dealing; not hiding costs and not charging for many of the little things that keep businesses ticking, but which can be annoying to the point of distraction. “We really believe that if our customers are happy, then they’ll be free to get on with their businesses, which in turn will expand,” added Dominic.

“Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business.

MP’s Diary

By Iain Stewart, MP for Milton Keynes South

Parliament was in summer recess from July to August. Contrary to what some journalists write, this does not mean that MPs have a six week holiday! Apart from a normal two week break with family and friends, this recess gave me the opportunity to spend more time meeting local organisations, people and businesses. For example, the Milton Keynes Community Foundation kindly arranged for me to see some of the projects that they had funded and to also meet the people behind them. I visited the Walnuts School in Bletchley, a specialist school for children with Autistic Spectrum disorders and special needs. I took a particular interest in the sensory room, which had been funded by the Foundation. Staff at the school explained to me how the facility helps meet the very individual needs of pupils. In the school playground there are lovely play facilities that the Foundation had funded. I then visited a community garden project in Tinkers Bridge which the Foundation also funded. I heard how staff from Community Action MK train and support local community groups in Tinkers Bridge and in other areas across Milton Keynes. The sense of pride from residents at the Tinkers Bridge project was very evident and I commend Milton Keynes Community Foundation for providing funding for these local initiatives. Projects like these really generate a sense of togetherness and team spirit among residents.

As regular readers will know, I have a keen interest in transport policy and I believe that good transport links play an important role in ensuring we have a successful economy. With this in mind, I took a short trip down the M1 to visit Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (DIRFT). DIRFT is a major rail port and logistics centre, which is used by a number of big companies for their distribution centers, including Tesco, Royal Mail and Eddie Stobart. As well as being short distance from the M1 and M6, the site is directly served by the West Coast Mainline. DIRFT is very important for both local and national

14 mkflyers central

distribution logistics, making sure that Milton Keynes is well supplied with the products that consumers like to see on the shelves. More importantly it helps boost the whole region as an international hub for trade, as it helps connect rail freight from the region with Felixstowe Port and the Channel Tunnel. I am grateful to The Malcolm Group, who manage the terminal, for showing me around.

Still on the trade and economy theme, I attended the ground-breaking event for the new phase of the John Lewis distribution centre at Magna Park. John Lewis has signed a 30-year lease on a 668,000 sq feet site and will be building a new distribution centre alongside its existing one. It is set to open in 2015. This is an exciting development for our local economy because 450 new jobs will be created in the Milton Keynes area. Finally, I have also had the opportunity to meet organisations as diverse as the MK Gallery, City Orchestra, Local Enterprise Partnership, MK College and the new Chamber of Commerce for an update on their activities. As ever, if you have any issues to raise with me please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Judicial Review on Employment Tribunal Fees On Monday, 29th July, our blog gave details of the fees that workers would have to pay to take their employer to an employment tribunal that came into effect that day. Unison, of the UK’s biggest unions, has been granted permission to seek a judicial review of the introduction of these fees and the hearing will taken place sometime in October. Unison general secretary, Len McCluskey said: “The introduction of punitive fees for taking a claim to an employment tribunal, would give the green light to unscrupulous employers to ride roughshod over already basic workers’ rights,” he said. “The Government should not put a price on justice. It is disappointing that in the interim fees will still be paid, but we will be making a strong case for a

16 mkflyers central

judicial review in October because we believe that these fees are unfair and should be dropped.”

The TUC have also attacked the introduction of the fees. TUC general secretary, Frances O’Grady said: “Today is a great day for Britain’s worst bosses. “By charging up-front fees for harassment and abuse claims the Government is making it easier for employers to get away with the most appalling behaviour. “These reforms are part of a wider campaign to get rid of workers’ basic rights at work. Its only achievement will be to price vulnerable people out of justice.” Let’s wait and see what happens!
