We have copied perceptions and bought into fears. We are living examples of freedom, free will and free choice, born of our own personal wants and democracies dreams... Yet who are we really? Where are we heading? What do we know? What is it we want out of life? We are basically good, kind, hardworking individuals, just wanting a normal easy lifestyle and life. We do our best to help others. We recycle and love the world we are part of, but often more than that we find ourselves stressed and unsure, despite all of our personal efforts to be otherwise - we don’t like how we see things unfolding. In an ideal world we would all get along, we’d respect and understand our sameness as well as our differences. What has happened instead is that cultural beliefs and individuals clash. Not every person on the planet operates from the same level of morality and intellect; some choose chaos and destruction over peace. Freedom means different things to different people at different times. Prosperity is just one of those differences. Here in the UK we are far better off than most of us realise. For a tiny island we sure have a powerful punch... We are capable of standing equally alongside larger, richer nations. We set the bar for good conduct and fair trade. We find the resources to help those in need wherever need occurs; we are forerunners in technology, education

and science; we want for nothing and want little from neighbouring countries and communities; we achieve to the highest standards that we can. Prosperity is a right we will all achieve, but not always in the way that we think. We fuel our pockets, our personal needs and requirements, but what about the needs and calling of the soul and the reasons we are here physically living life? We live in a segment of time where our most basic physical needs are easily met. On a scale of one to ten, extreme poverty no longer exists in our personal circles of living and sight. We have independence. We have tools to do our work. We have free time and entertainment for our pleasure... Life itself is now calling for our help, our needs have been met to its best ability, we are now being asked to give back. What would you do if you were able to ‘pay life something forward’; if you knew you had a worldly task to aid the changes coming in? What if you’re whole life you had trained to be exactly as you are - how would you reach out to the bigger picture – how could you help? Social Media – get other people to market your business for you Even though social media has been around for a while, it has taken longer to be embraced amongst the B2B world, with many businesses still unsure of how to effectively leverage social media as part of their marketing efforts. Try not to spread yourself too thin. It’s better to have just a couple that are well managed and populated with great content, rather than trying to have a presence on many, with not a lot on any of them. 5. Quality and relevant content Don’t just broadcast anything. If you want to build a following, create quality content that makes you a leader in your industry. Tailor your content too, so it is relevant to each audience and platform. 6. Stay engaged So many businesses fall at the first hurdle by pushing content in a one way approach. Social media is very much a two way channel of communication and is all about engagement. So respond when comments are left and reply to messages.

Here in Milton Keynes we often find ourselves teased due to the number of roundabouts you find and our 1970s architecture. What those who judge the MK Book by its cover miss though is the enormous sense of community we have within Milton Keynes. Considering the size of the city, the grid road system provides a unique set up and allows for a village style community within each grid square.

You can find the collection point near the check outs in the store and I strongly recommend you keep an eye out all year round. Over the last year, Sainsbury’s stores collectively raised over £25.4 million for charities and community organisations. They also support local schools and clubs through Active Kids and local community groups-a huge support for many different people in MK. Other organisations which have I have been equally impressed by over the past years include the Barclays based in the city centre, where I attended a charity bake sale for. The Home Retail Group runs a scheme which allows workers to have days off in order to help in the local community with different projects, to name but one organisation. The community work which takes place, really does make a huge difference and I believe it makes our city a better place. Following on, I recently visited the Orbit Housing HQ in Milton Keynes, which is a charity for homeless people based in Fishermead. During my tour I was shown a picture of the House of Commons and on pointing my office out I realised many hadn’t visited. It was my great pleasure therefore to host a group from the charity at the Houses of Parliament last month and following on from their tour I took them for tea on the terrace.

Over the past 7 years as the MP, I am always struck by the great support offered to those in need by the community at a local level and I am very pleased to see that large corporate firms based here in MK are taking their commitment to social responsibility so seriously. During a recent visit to Sainsbury’s based in the Hub, which constituted part of one of my busy days going around our city, I learnt of the many ways they are currently trying to help our local charities. Each Sainsbury store sponsors a local charity, selected by customers and colleagues. This year Sainsbury’s has decided to help the Salvation Army, which has a local centre very close by to the store in Conniburrow. Throughout the year, the store will undertake various initiatives to raise money as well as raising the profile of the local charity within the community. At the moment they

Working in such an amazing building certainly makes it enjoyable to show people around and I am always delighted to have people down from the constituency. Should there be groups or individuals who have never been and would like to go, all you need do is contact me. With the days growing shorter and the nights colder, I am assured following my visits over the past month that there are plenty of people ready to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Small businesses will lead the way in 2012, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2012, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2011. Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way. “Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business.

MP’s Diary

Parliament returned from its Summer Recess at the start of September and this was a good opportunity to take stock of forthcoming issues on the Parliamentary Agenda. As a Member of the Transport Select Committee I am closely involved in scrutinising the Government’s transport policy. Before the summer break the Committee was conducting an inquiry into the Government’s proposed reforms of the railways, Rail 2020. As part of the this inquiry the Transport Committee will be looking at where efficiency savings can be made on the rail network and how a balance should be struck between the taxpayer and the farepayer in funding the railway.

Foremost in my mind as the inquiry progresses is how efforts must be made to reduce the cost of rail fares for commuters. Many residents in Milton Keynes are regular rail users and I know that the cost of rail travel can be a significant proportion of the family budget. At present there appears to be a number of potential benefits to Milton Keynes contained in the proposals, such as cheaper tickets for those who use trains regularly but not frequently enough to warrant a season ticket. Additionally there are large scale investments in MK rail services, such as re-opening the East-West Rail line, new carriages to lengthen trains, and extra new fast trains for London Midland. All together I hope

this will mean a better service at a better cost for local commuters. As many readers will also know FirstGroup will be taking over from Virgin Trains as the franchise holders for the West Coast Mainline from December until 2026. As this is the line that serves Milton Keynes, I have understandably received a number of letters from commuters concerned about this change. Through my role on the Transport Select Committee I will be looking at the details carefully. Additionally I met with the Managing Director of FirstGroup this week to discuss their bid and ensure a good service for Milton Keynes Commuters. Another transport topic which has recently generated some controversy is discussions over a new runway at Heathrow. The Transport Committee has agreed to hold a major inquiry into the Government’s aviation strategy, which will include consideration of options for expanding airport capacity in south east England. We will look carefully at the arguments for and against expanding Heathrow, as well as proposals such as the Thames Estuary airport or so called ‘Boris Island’. The inquiry will be looking carefully at the environmental and economical aspects of expanding air capacity in the south east. Measures to Challenge “Outdated View” of Apprenticeships Announced The Government has announced a raft of measures designed to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to take on apprenticeships to include easier access to funding and standards to be introduced for training providers supplying services to the employers.

This comes following recommendations made by jewellery entrepreneur, Jason Holt, who was commissioned by the Government to review apprenticeships in SMEs to consider what changes could be made to encourage smaller businesses to recruit more apprentices.

• improve the Apprenticeship Grant for Employers (AGE) scheme, modifying eligibility restrictions, simplifying its use and giving greater access to the funding.

He stated that “while apprenticeships offer undoubted growth opportunities for businesses, not enough SMEs are taking advantage... ... because they have an outdated view of apprenticeships, are often in the dark and frequently do not receive the specific training provision their apprenticeships need.” The Government will: • work with SME advisors such as accountants and lawyers to encourage them to promote apprenticeships to their clients;

• provide improved information and increase the availability of training for apprentices; • agree standards for the provision of training to SMEs and what are the consequences of not meeting them;

It is proposed that the AGE scheme will now be available to Companies that have not employed an apprentice in the previous 12 months and expanded to Companies with up to 1,000 employees. There are some real benefits in SMEs “growing their own” and incentives like these will make a difference.
